I love any place the has the words "General Store" in its name. Today's General Stores are mostly filled with reproductions of things from day's gone by and that's okay because they mimic living history and things not forgotten. I mean where else can you buy a yo-yo, a bicycle handle-bar bell, a game of jax or bins of penny candies that are no longer a penny. It looked like most of the customers here were window shopping with lots of "I remember those", "come see this" or "what the heck is that". This store is a great place to reminisce and it's definitely a touchy-feely store that everyone picks up everything to get a closer look so most items here are like a Petri dish, a little hand sanitizer might be something you'll want to pick up while you're here. The staff is really great and can point you in the right direction if there's a particular item you're looking for unless it's a block of salt , a sack of flour or a country ham in a cloth sack hanging from the ceiling, it's not that kind of general store the only mason jars I saw here were filled with cat-eye marbles. I enjoyed spending about 30 minutes here, it was entertaining and I did find a refrigerator magnet for the RV, I didn't see any "you break it, you buy it" signs so the margins are probably pretty good here... read more

I like the combination of thrift, antiques, crystals, and edible goods at this store. You walk in and there's a great selection of pocket knives behind a case. To the right is crystals, tumbled stones, jewelry and souvenirs. You work your way to the back and they have urban goods, antiques, metal wall decor, and just a huge selection of indoor and outdoor decor. I thought the vintage cases were really fun to look at. If you enter the store and go to the left, that's the really exciting part! Pickled veg, jams, candy. All types of wonderful things to try. A bit pricey but I can be conservative so the price didn't bother me because I know I can make things last awhile. The employees were friendly and tentative to customers. read more

This is my favorite store to visit when I'm in town. It always has super interesting things and very fun signs. I always like looking at the unique jewelry and soda selections. Me and my friends enjoy using the various machines around the store, such as the fortune teller. I would definitely recommend bringing some quarters if you want to have fun with those. It is so worth it. This time around me and my friend got a bunch of postcards, which I'm very excited about. From what I have bought here, the prices seem reasonable. The staff were nice. I remember visiting this store 17 years ago when my kids were little and nothing has changed! There is something for everyone, from fun toys for the little ones, t-shirts and other souvenirs for all ages, and gifts galore. There is also a large selection of gourmet foods - jams and jellies, sauces, honey and more - where any "foodie" will find plenty to love. For me, it was a boysenberry jam. I had to buy a jar since you can't find this anywhere and it is my favorite. The other find on this visit was a package of the nostalgic candy Mary Janes. They are my husband's favorite and will make a perfect stocking stuffer. One word of caution - this store is packed with stuff everywhere with very little room to turn around. My husband is a wheelchair user and he'd never be able to navigate this crowded space :( read more

Great store but with one person on the register who was then asked something about something the store was then backed right up. Took forever to pay and get out of there. Plus the lady gave me a paper bag without a handle. Which then meant it tore and all my goods started to fall out as I left the store. We spent a wonderful morning strolling through Gibbs Garden then decided to head to Dahlonega for lunch. I was so excited to see a General Store that reminded me of the Mast General Store in Asheville, NC where I had purchased a wonderful hat for my fiancé. Well much to my surprise "the man in the red shirt and large belly" was staring at me from behind! He followed us through the store then stood at the front of the store with his head turned to the side because I was staring him down. It was only after the cashier asked him for a price check did I realize he worked there. How disgusting to treat your patrons like this. Won't be heading back there anytime soon. Get a life! A real gem. Don't pass by thinking it's a shop full of junk. It's fun to browse in this store. There are a slew of old-timey mechanical 'games' scattered around the store. My favorite is the player piano - it's worth the quarter. If you want a 25-cent piece of candy, a necklace, some Dahlonega gold flakes, toys for the kids, holiday decorations, a hilarious sign to hang in your garage, or local sauces, jams, and butters...this is your store! BACK IN THE DAY! This is a cute little store with a wide selection of items. They have everything from books and memorabilia from the Civil War, to old school candy and moon pies, candles, food items, t-shirts, hats, walking sticks and more. If a photo of Robert E. Lee or General Longstreet offends you, avoid the upper level. If you don't like images of little black dolls from back in the day, avoid the upper level, (and yes they have the white counterpart to this doll and neither image is flattering but probably true to the era in which these dolls were originally made). Yes, they have the Confederate flag for sell (not displayed but neatly folded on the table), but it too is on the second level. On the other hand, if you enjoy Civil War history, they have black and white prints of some of the key players, and battle sites and they also have framed and matted prints in color. You will also find a number of related books as well. Yes, they really do have 5 cent coffee on the honor system. You just drop your money in the jar and pour yourself a cup of coffee. My husband was able to grab a seat while I snooped around. The staff in this store was very warm and friendly and easily engaged. You could take everything out of this store and I would still be enamored because I love these old original structures. From the walls to the floors they hold so much history and so many secrets. Great old time general store full of great souvenirs and gifts from pottery to toys to stuffed flying jackalopes. It has a great selection of books and old-fashioned gifts. The store is very well maintained, organized and clean. The prices are reasonable considering it is a tourist shop and very reasonable compared to other General Stores in North Carolina. The people that work there are very friendly and helpful. I will be doing a lot of Christmas shopping there. read more

I came in today to few "gift sets" as Christmas presents for friends up in New Jersey. The manager was so helpful helping me fill the boxes with their "best sellers". Def worth the final pice if $30 a gift box I know my friends will enjoy the unique Georgia flavors in the box. read more

Many of the stores in Helen and even the Gold store in Dahlonega have discounts for us locals and Veterans and seniors. This store doesnt. Hope that changes. They do have the player piano which is a lot of value for the quarter, and a rendition of the Beatles song, "Will you still need me will you still feed me.." which is interesting.
