Being a tourist in the city this week I decided to venture out towards Papworth village (the home…read moreof the infamous Papworth hospital and my place of work as of next month!) The bus station is easily located in the centre of the city. I struggled this morning largely as I couldn't find an information kiosk to check where I needed to be. Although I knew the number of the service I wasn't sure of the stop but when I asked one of the bus drivers they were very helpful (even though it was run by a separate company) and pointed me in the right direction. There are no shops or eateries within the station itself but due to its close proximity to the city i don't think this is too much of an issue. Overall I marked it down due to the difficulty in navigating stops and it appeared a bit disorganised with one driver getting off and shouting for passengers to Ely.

The train station at Shelford is very small. There is only an automatic ticket machine so do not…read moreexpect to get served by a person! The layout is not great as the only way to cross the tracks so if there is a train coming and you are on the wrong platform you had better hope it is not yours as you will have to watch the train pull into the station and stand a tht ecrossing gates like a muppet watching the train pull off without you! However, it is a very small village station, so i suppose this cant be helped. If you're hungry and do miss your train there is an Indian restaurant right next to the station, and a pub is within sight.

There's loads of parking space and as far as I could see the frequency of buses to downtown Cambridge is quite high. You can pay for parking and pick up bus tickets at the automated ticket machines on location. However if you are taking the train into the city and have a network rail card, it is best to buy your discounted plus bus ticket as an add on to your train ticket

The dispatcher was completely unsympathetic - it was clear they were booking according to how their drivers could get more runs in rather than the actual convenience of the customer. Driver was over an hour late picking us up, (not what you need after a night flight) He then proceeded to spill his coffee while banging our bags on the trolley into the walls. He was on the phone most of the journey back (when I emailed afterwards the office staff told me he probably wasn't on his phone and was on his PDA, we were in the car with him and could clearly see what he was doing!!) he was driving so erratic that I had to hold my daughters head back as he was breaking so hard and switching lanes dangerously, seemed he was in a rush to get us back. Once home I emailed the staff of all my grievances and they didn't care one bit. No money was refunded for our traumatic journey, not even a Sorry! They don't care as they have over £400 of our money though! Disgusting awful people to deal with. Highly recommend using someone else for your travels! Wouldn't have even given one star but unfortunately had to.

My room was a good size, with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi (that actually works!). The bathroom was functional and my stay was quiet. The staff are pleasant and helpful. I had an evening meal which was lovely (if a tad overpriced) and the breakfast provided is a buffet of continental (croissants, yoghurt, juice and cereal) and some hot items (sausages, baked beans, scrambled eggs and toast). It wasn't anything special, but gets the day started. Overall, an unspectacular but comfortable stay. I'd stay here again.

This hotel is newish and very clean. The food served here is good (nice breakfast) and they do have a bar if you desire a cocktail. We even had bunnies and deer in the back lawn which were fun to watch. They have a biking/walking trail right out their front door which takes you to a bus stop that will take you to Cambridge Center. Next door is a large workout facility that you can use for a discounted rate thru the hotel. But the best thing about this hotel are the staff, namely Kim and Paulo. Both are very helpful. Needed a converter for my phone, no problem, Kim had one. Needed help with my Just Eat order that didn't show up, Paulo there to help! I would definitely stay here again.

The rooms are newly renovated, quiet and super clean - breakfast is great and the reasonable nightly rate is just fantastic for Cambridgeshire! The guesthouse is only 2 mins drive from the Park and Ride which can take you into the city for £2.20 or so. Bear in mind though that the P&R shuts at 8pm, which is annoyingly much earlier than over in Oxford (last bus 11.30pm there). Still, a taxi ride from the center of town to the guesthouse is only a fiver if you get caught out with the bus timetable on the return. Going into the city, there's a bus stop barely 30 meters from the front door :) If you're staying in Cambridge and want a reasonable, comfortable, clean place to stay at a price that would make even a 'chain' hotel weep, this is the place!

Medium sized local train station with a few train platforms. Located about a 10 min drive from the…read moreuniversity section of town, it's an 1 hour 10ish minutes commute from London about £40 off peak round trip booked a couple weeks in advance, (prices may be higher or lower based on when you book, and peak vs non-peak transit times). In the station tickets are available for purchase at machines or ticket windows, if you haven't purchased online in advance. There are bathrooms, waiting areas and a small M&S express store inside the station, most of the platforms are covered and there are plenty of signs indicating platform numbers and arriving trains. Generally speaking station looked pretty clean. Outside the station there are bike racks and also temporary standing space for cars waiting for passenger pick up though long term parking I believe is a bit of a walk. Also local buses have stops right down the street (mostly walking towards the left as you exit the station), and they have general routes on posted signs and arrival times (posted live on electric signs). For more details on more local stops and fare amounts (vary by bus line and route), best to do some Google research prior to getting on.

From the reception desk to Toby at the front door to the young man who served me coffee of my choice each morning to the young lady who quickly steeped in to wipe up the orange juice I spilled IN THE LIFT, each and every staff member I met demonstrated great character. It's in a…read moregreat location, just about a 15 minute walk (partially along the forest path near the River Cam) south of the city center, which also makes it more convenient to walk to Grantchester village if you want to visit the Orchard Tea Gardens (which you should do!). If you are arriving at the Cambridge train station a cab is only about £6 as of 2014 if you don't want to drag your luggage through the forest, which we found out the hard way. Jonathan is a very kind and helpful host, and everything is chosen with great care, from the modern yet functional fixtures, to the clean and unusually large beds compared to other beds we encountered in the UK, to the beautifully handpicked furniture. Jonathan also buys groceries early every morning, so the fresh fruit and local sausage and bacon he serves are outstanding. He also makes perfectly cooked eggs, as well as delicious homemade fruit smoothies! I would definitely stay here again.
