Great selection. I've bought everything from building materials to fishing equipment to ammunition here. They have a surprising amount of products for a hardware store in such a small town. Great service! Competitive prices. Great personal service! I'm not a contractor but felt I received the same service and prices as if I did a whole lot more volume. My order was large for me but small for a contractor. The order was delivered the same day as ordered! The delivery guy was very cooperative and place the material right next to my project with a fork lift. A minor error in the order was resolved on the spot. This seemingly little part of my experience was worth a great deal to me. I am so happy I didn't have to drive 30 miles, pick out lumber (that is mostly junk), handle it myself, load it, unload it and deal with staff that has no idea what they are doing. I have no desire to ever go back to the "big orange box" in Auburn when I have competitive prices, knowledgeable staff, and great personal service as I have right here in Colfax. Not happy!!! I came in to purchase a few light bulbs and telephone chord for the business. I had a properly signed visa credit card but had forgotten my ID at home. The man at the counter was rude. When I explained that I had forgotten my ID, he literally snatched the card from me and started taking down information and speaking threateningly. He was suspecting that I was a fraud and treating me as such. According to visa merchant agreement signed by all retailers excepting visa cards, retailers are _prohibited_ from _requiring_ ID for a signed Visa card. They can ask, but it is my right to withhold my ID. Other merchants have different rules (e.g. AMEX allows ID requirement), but this store is operating in violation of their merchant agreement. I had to drive back home 14 mile round trip, just to get my ID! When I finally made it back I got another gentleman (happy for that!) to whom I quietly explained why they were in violation. He explained that there was a store policy because they had previously lost "thousands" due to non-authorized credit card sales. I appreciate that, but explained that they will need to revisit their store policy for Visa cards. He was gracious though he did require my ID, explaining that he would mention it to their "accounting person" tomorrow. I don't hold up against them that they are unknowingly in violation of the merchant agreement because they're trying to cut down on fraud, but I do hold the attitude against that first employee. And to BOOT! I literally just went back inside to get the names of both employees. Only the first (rude!) guy was there, and I asked him if he wouldn't mind sharing his first name. He asked me why I wanted it and I said I was writing a review. Finally told me "you can put down Mike". And I asked about the others guy's name, and he said I could put down "Mike" for him also. WHAT! (don't believe it for a hot second) If you ever do come here, avoid all the "Mikes" you find (everyone?!), just in case! read more

So this review is long overdue. I moved to the colfax area a couple years ago. We bought a fixer-upper, so we are in hardware stores all the time. From the beginning most of the men and women working there have been rude or have ignored us. From the paint department to the lumber yard. I have many times bought something from the yard inside and after gettng in my truck and waiting 10-15 min in the lumber yard, have had to get the materials myself. I have had to get heavy, awkward (expensive) materials in my truck by myself many times. This last visit was the kicker! The Stihl company does maintenance on chainsaws out of hills flat... so six months ago I dropped off my stihl and in these six months I have called 4-5 times to check on it and have stopped by 2-3 times. When I dropped it off they said it would be 2-3 weeks to do the tune up. Six months later they say it's still in pieces and cannot give it back until it's put back together. I'm guessing they have lost my $600 chainsaw. I will be flying past hills flat from now on And going straight to Home Depot. I wish I could give multiple reviews. Hills flat is still one of the worst hardware stores I've ever been to. I wish we had another in town. Sad. read more

After a few minutes in this store you will wonder if you are in fact in a building supply place; the people who work here are incredibly nice, knowledgeable and friendly. After years of depressing visits to Lowes, Home Despot etc., places like Hills Flat and Ashby Lumber (in berkeley) make building things fun again read more

Very friendly and helpful staff. I try to shop here instead of going to home depot ( bad word at HFL!!) Some stuff is more expensive, and some stuff they don't have, but it beats a drive to auburn or sac any day!! read more

This place has the worst customer service on the planet. The staff is completely lazy and unhelpful. I've even showed up 10 minutes before closing and had the doors locked in my face. I only shop there when it's an absolute emergency (it's much closer to my home than the better hardware stores in Meadow Vista and Auburn). read more

I had a load delivered from Colfax. When I broke it open to no surprise it was lousy. Went exchange the bad material and ran into a list if problem. 1st, I didnt have my copy of the tag so I had to go back and get. 2nd when I returned with it, I was told I must if had the material for a long time because there is no way they would of sent that out. 3rd the " area manager " is a rude ignorant fool. He mumble " if you dont like it, get it some where else". When asked fir his name all I got was more plastic poor attitude. Thankfully the older gentleman that was helping unload and exchange the material was helpful and appauligized fir the rude behavior and lousy material. He was the 1 that informed me that the " area manager" is Cameron and that according to the delivery tag he was the person that pulled my material. Thanks to this 1 single person, Hills Flat will not be getting any more of my buisness. And I will inform all of my clients to give their buisness to Homedepot. read more

Worst lumber knowledge in the area. A couple of years ago they top choice for contracts & dyi. Staff WAS helpful & knowledge able. But now it seems new management & staff are lost , rude, ignorant. I damn near got accused of stealing when I tried to return a 6x6 beam that was bending. Yard boss " there's no way in hell I let that get delivered to. You must of got it somewhere else". An amazing array of everything especially their lumber and all things can be delivered. We had the best professional delivery person with all things perfextly in order. The absolutle reasin why we wont go in to the store is they do not have enough mature or professional people inside. Ive seen one or two mature women inside. The others are always young girls, that are their to gauk at the men who either work their too, or my husband standing with me. This is a high internal turnover store that managment thinks hiring flirty girls gets them business. It has always been this way. The manager must feel the customer service he hires suites his own ego. Try to hire women over 35...or over 40 even. Isn't their equal opportunity requiremets? Seeing girls that kniw nothing about the i dustry your company stands for is ludacris ... I hope you provide a decent salary to those delivery men and mature women Ive seen there for years, they deserve your salary (manager) if not, more.
