I think people's expectations of what a hardware store should be are comically unreasonable. This place is good for most of anything you would need for any projects around the house/homestead and then some. It's a local business, it's on par with your local ace hardware but it's not a chain store. Better selection of power and hand tools based off what I saw, pretty decent garden section. I've lived in Colfax for over 20+ years and Ive never had a business treat locals the way this business does. I recently bought a lawn mower and used it twice and put it in the garage for the winter. Went to pull it out and use it a few weeks ago and it didn't work so I took it back and they charged me 45$ to look at it. So a month goes by and I hear nothing from them so I call and they tell me there's no compression and there's nothing they can do for me and to call the manufacturer. And that 45$ was for the man's time to simply tear it apart. No call, no update and no customer service absolutely whatsoever. Same thing happened with a pressure washer I bought there a year ago. They told me they couldn't refund me for weeks and after finally getting ahold of one of the pardini brothers they were willing to give me my money back. I personally wouldn't buy any big products from this business, they made me lose thousands of dollars. Take the time and go to auburn they will steal your money! Because as I said if you buy it that day and go home and for some reason it doesn't work, you will not be receiving your money back. read more

What can I say.... What a great hometown store! I recently found myself shopping long distance for my oldest sons birthday. I've been missing him terribly and being it was a special occasion made the task even harder. I wanted something extra cool... That's when Mike and the sales staff at Hills Flat came in. For a small place, they have quite the selection of lumber here. I have found the employees kind and helpful. It's a bit more expensive than HD, but much more convenient for my family for little things. I've had good luck with the Farm Boss I bought here, and appreciate the chain sharpening service. We are working on several projects having bought land up there a few years ago and we never go to Home Depot in Auburn anymore as Hills Flat has everything we need and treat us wonderfully. I left a review once but Yelp must have lost it. I have only had a pleasant experience at HFL. The Colfax store check out is very - very slow. But I love the guys out in the yard. (Don't forget the yard receipt) They load up your stuff quickly and with a good attitude. I like this service. The Grass Valley store only has women so you load yourself. But the GV store check out is less painful. read more

I really think this is a nice lumber yard, but I can't spend my time or money there. An American establishment that dose not Honor there Veterans its Service Men and Woman is a disgrace to all those who have and still fighting for there freedom to have such a nice Lumber yard. I can't believe they don't at least give a Military discount, even it's just a 5%. Our Veterans don't have a large income. Unlike the owners of Hills Flat Lumber. In November, I brought in a saw that wasn't working quite right. It was discovered the wrong fuel was being used. Hills Flat Lumber repaired the saw and now runs great. Thank you Jim and Mike, you have a customer for life! read more

Usually I support local businesses and don't mind paying a premium to help stores in smaller communities, HOWEVER, this store is a complete price gouging greedy business. Stopped in to buy some bulk ROMAX wire - 15ft - which they charged me $28 dollars. When I told them they have pre-packaged wire of 50ft for $32 dollars they said too bad, we already cut it. (There was a long line behind me so I didn't stand there and argue, plus I have better things to do) Everything in this store is double the price of even local hardware stores in most places. I would give them a negative 5 stars if possible and will guarantee they go out of business. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU SPEND A NICKEL OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY IN THIS PRICE GOUGING POOR EXCUSE OF A BUSINESS! read more

Very poor customer service. I should have read the reviews before making my purchase. I am not sure a bad review will result in any changes either but at least the information is out there. I purchased a new Husk 562xp chainsaw. HFL filled it with gas before I left. I used it the next day. It was difficult to start and to keep running but I managed. I should have taken it back at the first sign of difficulty. After about an hour stopped running. It had about 10% fuel left so I mixed oil (bought at the same time) and my gas and filled it up. It didn't start. I tried the next but it didn't start so I brought it back. They tried to start it and inspected my fuel. They dumped my fuel and FILLED it with fuel. It didn't start so they kept it and ran diagnostics. Turns out a scored cylinder from lean fuel. They said they could not have put improper fuel in it because they are professionals. I am disputing this because it never ran with my fuel. The diagnostics shows the total run time of 2:10, 10 successful starts, and 10 starts since tuning. In other words, HFL sold me a used saw and when it broke they are alleging that I am to blame. Also, they did not tune it or start it in front of me. Their offer is to sell me a new one for $700 and I get to keep the broken one. This is my experience and maybe they don't care about customer service. If you decide to do business with them, take pictures, make recordings, and get everything in writing. 01/30/19-JIm H, store manager, called me. Among other things, Jim said he was aware that straight gas was used in my saw and that based on that occurrence, he informed his staff that unless an employee is specifically trained, that they are not to fuel any equipment. I took this as an admission that on Saturday, 01/12/19, when I returned the saw, a HFL employee used straight gas to fuel the saw. It was this fuel that was left in the primer bulb. Also if an employee used improper fuel on 01/12/19, then it is probable they used improper fuel when it was initially fueled on 01/10/19. read more

I noticed that of only 2 reviews, both were from the Bay Area.. so I thought it was time for a "local" point of view. The bay area reviewers are right though - this is a 5 star business! First, they are locally owned, second their nursery and nursery staff are incredible, third the customer service is excellent. The Colfax store is wonderful! example one: I moved to the area 8 years ago, and was a pretty good gardener in my old zone. But moving up here has it's own challenges for gardening - anyone who has ever watched a deer eat something you've struggled for months to get to grow knows what I'm talking about. The people in the nursery at Hills Flat really know their zones, the soil, the plants and, yes, the animals that all present challenges here. They are incredibly knowledgeable and will tell you when something will or won't work for your location. I think their staff is even better than our local Auburn nursery (which is also well run and I frequent as well) example two: my contractor uses them all the time. Will call them up and order, and I go in and pick up. All the guys at the order desk and in the lumber yard are incredibly pleasant and well organized - really know their products. Yesterday afternoon we placed an order for merchandise they didn't have in stock at the Colfax store. They said they would ship it from Grass Valley and have it here first thing. I just called, and they had a mix up (they did get it in, but not enough) and the man on the order desk was SO apologetic.. He knew my job might be delayed, and sounded so upset - i think he was ready to go to Grass Valley himself to get the pickup! Really, it was no problem for me and he was great trying to help me. They are always courteous, kind and knowledgeable. THIS IS REALLY A GREAT STORE! read more

Wow, no review since 2006! Well, this place deserves better. But I guess we need to reach the general contractors out there and get them on Yelp!! Well, this place certainly deserves 5 starts, and then some. I've frequented hardware stores and lumber yards over the last 3 years as I've been part of building a camp/retreat sight up in the Sierras for Gracepoint Berkeley. We've ordered from them numerous times and rarely has there been any issues. They deliver on time and the delivery is FREE for orders over $500 which is a major plus even though we are located about 45min-1hr from them. Their staff is very helpful and willing to work with you. They are great for both the experienced contractor or the novice home owner as they cater to your needs and expertise, or lack there of in my case! They also have a lot of items in stock, a huge yard in the back, and have another store over in Grass Valley that they can bring items from if they don't carry it at Colfax. Also my experience has been that working with the Colfax store brings in better results. While they have the same items, they are more relaxed and helpful there. Overall, the pricing is quite reasonable though most items are a bit pricier than Home Depot. However, the closest Home Depot is all the way down at Auburn, so if you're building in the mountains, this is definitely your best bet! read more

Hal The Handyman Shops Here! HFL in Colfax and Grass Valley is my first stop when shopping for project materials. Their staff is always courteous and knowledgable, and will go out of their way to help you. And since most of my projects span the Grass Valley to Auburn areas, they are conveniently located. HFL has a good selection of products at competitive prices. I suggest you call before going to pick up an item, just to be certain it is available at the store. Although, I got burned a couple of times when I was told they had an item and when I got there, the item was not. But, I've had more success with them than failures. . read more

I have been a satisfied customer for years, but I am dismayed that almost all of the employees in the Colfax store have not been wearing face masks during the covid-19 pandemic. I asked one employee why she was not wearing a mask, and she replied: " Because they are not required. I really don't believe they do any good." I spoke with the manager of the Grass Valley store about my concerns, and he agreed, but claimed they could not make their employees wear masks. We need to confront this crisis as a unified community. Wearing masks is a demonstration that we care about the well being of others. I wish Hills Flat would educate their employees about this very real public health emergency, and require that they wear masks while on the job. read more

Really trying to support local business and came in for paint. The only person in the store who could mix the paint was on break and we were told we had to wait 20 minutes. We decided to wait and after 30 were told she was coming soon. Someone finally came, not the least bit apologetic and after all that waiting they didn't carry the size we needed. We will be going to Home Depot next time. read more

I have an account and spend thousands of dollars annually in the store. I attempted to return a pair of Carhartt work trousers that were bought in the wrong size for one of my employees and as I didn't have the receipt they refuse to take them as a return. My receipts are all stored on the system under my account so I can't see why this was such a problem. Now I have a pair of trousers that no one will ever wear because they are for fat people who tend to not work in my industry. They sit in the back of my truck with the labels on getting dirty. One less customer for you worry about in future! Incase someone at hills flat reads this my account is 7986724, maybe you should verify what I'm saying and change your refund/replace procedure for loyal customers instead of making them feel like frauds or criminals. read more

Perhaps there's been some turn over since the last reviews. I've received poor customer service from Hills Flat and will not be giving them any more business after the contractor we are working with has completed our roof. Customer Service 101: If the paperwork you have has the wrong number, *apologize* then offer to check the database/other paperwork for the account. Should you not find the correct contact number *after* having looked for it, *apologize again* and ask if the person has the correct number and offer to update the paperwork/database/etc. in order to prevent this from happening in the future. Making the customer do your work (and yes having the correct contact information is your job as the business), isn't how you keep customers. read more

Customer Service has always been noteworthy but recently I turned in a 2 week old Husqvarna Hedger for repair. 6 Weeks later I still must call and check only to learn that I owe 45.00 as the trigger, which failed after the pull failed was not to be covered. I will certainly take this up with Husqvarna but not pleased with the lack of attention and service. This store and staff have always rated high and while I feel that this is an issue related to Husqvarna, communication was less than wonderful. read more

Genuinely helpful staff that has knowledge of products and the stores layout. If I drive to auburn Home Depot in an attempt to save a few bucks the difference is lost in gas cost. They've got a good fishing section and sell bait and hunt/fish licenses. Nice extensive lumber yard and tool rental. Also the best price in town on propane. read more
