Hill City Diner is a great name for a diner in Summit. Because Summit means the top of a hill. Genius. I came for breakfast. Had a sausage, egg, and cheese. Classic. Hits the spot. Very small place. You would have to leave to change your mind. 3 hard working guys in a kitchen cast iron frying pans. That's fun. I guess they are famous for Sloppy Joes? Now in Massachusetts Sloppy Joe is ground meat in tomato based sauce. Like loose ground meat. New Jersey has a different sandwich. Probably a guy named Joe but a different guy. Still sloppy, though. It's in the back. Have to access from DeForest Ave. Behind the big parking lot across from CVS. First hour to park in that lot is free. I think 35 cents transaction fee. Pretty fast service. Cramped place but very clean. read more

This is a little hidden gem. Small, hard to find spot hidden in the alley way near the parking lot on deforest. Place is super small yet offers a nice little menu of items. Walked in and couldn't believe how small this place was. The entire deli can't be any bigger than 100 sqft. 2 guys working the deli are super friendly. We ordered the turkey sloppy Joe and cheesesteak. Also tried the tuna. Tuna was really good. Will definitely get that on some rye bread next time Sloppy Joe looks like the twin of millburn deli sloppy joes. Taste was almost as good. If millburn deli sloppy Joe is a 10 for taste then this sloppy Joe a 9. Very good with better prices. Sloppy joes are $9 to 11 pretty much no matter what you get on them. Even with 2 meats. FYI. They put American cheese on their sloppy joes but will switch to Swiss when asked. Cheesesteak was good. Ordered a regular plain cheesesteak with American cheese and nothing else on it. It was good but just the best. Maybe 7.5 or 8 out of 10. Definitely worth it. I would suggest giving this little place a try. The workers who are probably the owners are great guys and work their asses off. Next time I'm in summit I'm going to stop by again. read more

Some things are inevitable- like Money Love & Change - not sure what happened but in between visits, they moved to a system where they weigh the meat for the subs. That won't do. This place is a hidden gem. Tiny and kind of tucked away, you wouldn't even know it was there. I'm so glad I found it. It's the first time I tried a NJ Sloppy Joe. Once you find it, this place is a hidden gem. This place can fit about 5 people max and despite its address, it is essentially incorrect as it is not on the road it says it is. It's in the back alley. We were in town to visit a local store and wanted some food to take home with us. The staff is excellent and quick. We got an egg and cheese - solid and a pastrami on rye - very good. They are known for their "sloppy joes" so I'm sure they are great, I just don't care for coleslaw and/or Russian dressing. Overall I can see the appeal and I would probably frequent it if I were local. read more

This is my go to deli when I'm in a rush and don't have time to sit down and eat. It's a tiny little spot, standing room only, but the service is excellent, just call 15 minutes ahead with your order! The owner and his wife are very sweet people and they put a lot of hard work into the business and it shows. I love supporting businesses like these! read more

Fed a mix of 10 adults and teenagers with their classic and turkey sloppy Joe's. Sandwiches were delicious, filling and a nice surprise for my company. Also added some salads and chips. I put in my order in the morning and all was ready on time. Prices were reasonable - perhaps because they're not on the Main Street in Summit but tucked away back by the public parking lot. They would go out of business if they weren't a hit with the locals. And they appreciated the order and helped load the food into my car. So I highly recommend them and would use them again. Took me a solid 10 minutes to find this place. It's a little hidden gem that's behind the banks in town (not sure why my phone was guiding me incorrectly). What an absolute delight to try their breakfast sandwich (taylor ham/egg/cheese). The taylor ham was on the softer side vs being crispy (which I actually like better). The egg was cooked nicely (wasn't TOO fried and browned). Cheese on the top and bottom is a good move. Having all of this on a kaiser roll works so well because it doesn't take away from the flavor of the contents like a bagel sometimes does. Would have added a picture if I didn't finish it so quickly. Overall, I'm happy I found this teeny tiny deli and would definitely stop by again. Very pleasant workers too! read more

I think for a breakfast sandwich they do a pretty good job. The prices are a little high and often vary. Sometimes it's $6 for a breakfast sandwich sometimes it's $5.40 idk why. The bagels are sometimes good and sometimes not. It's convenient for me when I am hungry and don't feel like waiting for parking for manhattan bagel (I like bagel sandwiches over rolls). This place is SO good. Classic deli style, and they cook all their own meats and toppings. If you can't find it, the entrance is on the back of the building (same building as Summit house), it's just a little pickup place. We had the Cubano and it was delicious. I was very happy to see the Hill City Deli reborn-terrific sloppy joes, and even the switch to Anthony & Sons rye bread (from Pechters I think) hasn't changed the quality. The in-house roasted roast beef and turkey are terrific, the salads waaay above average, and watching them work their magic in such a small space is a treat itself. Not cheap, but a good sloppy joe isn't. The giant (free, for under 1 hour) parking lot is also a big plus! read more

Glad to see an old Summit institution return. These two brothers are doing a great job, and the sloppy Joe's taste just like I remember. It's right behind the old Hill city, so stop in for a sandwich folks. Since writing that first review I have become a big fan of their breakfast sandwiches (BEC & SEC - Haven't tried the Taylor ham yet). Not as much meat as the summit diner, but tastier - I think it's the eggs. My wife thinks it's because they cook them in a giant cast iron skillet. I also like the Kaiser roll better. Solid sloppy Joes, but I usually get the Cajun Turkey (turkey, avocado, pepperjack, roasted peppers, with choice of sauce pesto or ranch [ask for both]). There are deli's and then there's Hill City. I've been a customer for many years....it is always excellent. I'm usually local so I'm there daily. I have been out of town and had to find food elsewhere....it's always a disappointment. It seems impossible to find a deli with a real personality that cares about the food they prepare for you. The Sloppy Joes are just as good as they ever were. Rey Garcia makes sure of that. So, now, the joint is a hole-in-the-wall facing the parking lot, around the corner from its old Maple Street location. They still make the best sloppy joes this side of Millburn Deli. I drove all the way there from PA, to get what I used to love about North Jersey, and living in Summit. These sammies ROCK (and you can feed 2-3 people, or get at least two meals from one joe). Excellent sandwiches! Great Sloppy Joes. I grew up in Millburn with the Millburn Deli. The Sloppy Joe at Hill City is superior. Bigger and better. The "bird" turkey is fresh roasted and definitely the way to go. My current favorite besides the Joe Is a bird turkey blt. read more
