My family had a wonderful experience with Chef James! We hosted an intimate dinner party for 7 to celebrate my mom's 60th birthday in the comfort of our own home. Chef James worked with me to curate the perfect menu and accommodated all of my requests. We had four courses -- peaches and burrata, tuna tartar, poached pear salad, steak and scallops, riosotto and mixed seasonal veg, and creme brulee. Each was better than the next. My sister actually said she wanted to "drink the brown sauce with a straw" -- it was that good! Chef James is incredibly professional and he left our kitchen spotless -- the same way he found it. He was quick, communicative, and served around our wonky schedule (that included bed time for toddlers between courses). And of course, all of the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

NOT FOR CORPORATE CATERING - We cater weekly lunches in our office and I must say this has been the worst experience we've had thus far. The Passionate Chef may be good for a small dinner party or gathering, however, when it comes to corporate catering, especially portion sizing, I would steer clear of this caterer. It was just embarrassing, for the amount of money we paid, to receive so little food. I stated I was ordering food for 40 guests. I ordered 3 mains (chicken, ribs, fish) at 28 portions EACH; 2 starches, 1 veg & 1 salad. Typically, in a lunch buffet setting people will either take a little here/ a little there or focus on 1 main. So when a caterer advertises that a tray of food feeds 7 people, it should actually contain 7 FULL portions of that item and be priced accordingly. As an example, we ordered 4 trays of the baked flounder. It should've contained 28 FULL portions of flounder. Some people may want the full portion while others may just want a piece since they're having either the chicken, ribs or both. What we got instead was maybe 30 2-3 inch pieces of fish floating in some sauce. All of the fish we received could've easily fit (with room) into a half tray. Barely enough for 10 portions let alone 28. The mac & cheese arrived dry and we had to mix it up before serving (sauce somehow on the bottom only). What about the parmesan breadcrumbs you ask? Nope, none. Smoked ribs? Nope, just boiled and baked. How do I know? Well, smoked pork ribs are pink when actually smoked (not liquid smoke) and these ribs were ashen gray. We received a full deep tray of salad (yay!) but 1/3 of a quart of dressing and ran out by the time the salad was half done. I've worked in corporate catering for over 10 years, and managed restaurants the 10 years before that. I've been a part of the planning, production and execution of thousands of events (large & small) in my career. This has seriously disappointed me and I cannot understand how he was able to drop this food off with pride. Advice to the Caterer: Portion your food properly and price it accordingly. Give an accurate description of the item being sold and please no excuses.

What can I say about my experience with Passionate Chef and Chef James? It was a dream! I recently worked with Chef James to provide a private dining experience in the Poconos as the culmination of my best friend's Bachelorette weekend. I wanted the occasion to be something truly special, and they delivered above and beyond! First off, Chef James was super communicative and accommodating in the run-up to the event, so even though I had never hired a private chef before, I had every confidence the night would be a success! He assured me that, though we were staying at a rental in a kitchen I wasn't personally familiar with, he'd be able to make it work. What an understatement! From the moment he arrived with Gabriel (our server for the evening), I was immediately put at ease by their confidence and friendly demeanors. Bringing printed menus to mark the occasion was an especially classy touch, and it was just wonderful what Gabriel did in taking our bachelorette decorations strewn through the house and setting a beautiful table with them. Minutes into Chef James's arrival, the house was filled with such delicious scents, our entire party couldn't wait! We began with a cocktail hour, with delicious appetizers and were then seated for the salad, entree and dessert courses. Gabriel was a wonderful server - kind, warm and attentive without ever being intrusive. Everything we ate was scrumptious, served at the right temperature, and the plating was also beautiful (see photo for the filet mignon entree with bordelaise sauce)! As previously noted, I had never hired a private chef before and this meal was to be the centerpiece of the weekend. Chef James and Passionate Chef have now set the bar very high for me, and they truly worked seamlessly to make the night a once-in-a-lifetime experience that left us all (bride-to-be included) deeply impressed and moved. If you are in the market for a chef, look no further than Passionate Chef! I'd recommend it in an instant! Thanks again Chef James!

The best and worth every penny! Chef James and his beautiful partner catered my, 38th, birthday dinner. The food was delicious! We had soup, an appetizer, an entree, plus dessert! He prepared a menu, and we chose our own individual entrees. There was plenty of food leftover, so we were able to indulge and try every dish! I will definitely use his service again. They cleaned up afterwards and left the kitchen spotless! They were very professional and friendly. Please have them cater your next event. You will not regret it!

It took me a really long time to write this review, because what was supposed to be an exciting…read moretime in my life ended up being one of the most stressful. Christa, the owner of this company, is responsible for a large part of that. On 6/30 Christa informed me that she did not have enough people to arrange a tasteing for us (I had been waiting for that to make our final menu choices). On July 1st, about one month before my wedding reception, I was hospitalized after a bad accident. On 7/11, I touched base with Christa to let her know about the accident, and asked her for some final information I needed to provide to or venue (license plates, liability insurances, etc). She responsed on 7/11, but didn't address anything I had asked for. On 7/14 I emailed and asked again for those things, and asked if we could choose the stations. She did not respond. On 7/17 I followed up and emailed her again. Christa finally replied on 7/20- but again did not give me the information I needed. On 7/24 I emailed Christa again to follow up and confirm the details. She responded that day and expressed her concern that we needed to finalized the menus, but when I requested we speak on the phone about the stations, she said that she did not have time and was busy. I responded with my questions about the menu via email, but did not hear back that day. I emailed again on 7/25 to follow up- no response. 7/27 Christa finally responded and said that she would not be catering our wedding. I am going to assume that she realized she couldn't get the liability insurance I needed, and then used the fact that I was asking about the menu as an excuse to pull out of the event. She said that our contract stated final menu choices needed to be made 30 days before the event, and for that reason, she would not be catering our wedding. I reminded her that I was badly injured in the hospital 30 days before, and she told me that my husband should have taken care of it. Well, Christa, if it was SO time sensitive, why did you not simple express this to me on 7/11 when I was clearly reaching out to get everything done? Why would you let 9 days go before responding to my initial email, and then days and days between the emails following? Why would you not arrange a time to speak to me? Why in the world would you pull out of a wedding with only 9 days to go? Especially after I showed you a picture of how badly I was injured, and I'm sure you knew how stressful that would be. All I can say to those considering working with Christa is, if you don't heed my advise and stay far away, use a credit card for your down payment. I was only able to get my money back by disputing the 3,300$ charge with my CC company and providing our email correspondence as evidence. I was also lucky enough that another caterer (amoraco) heard my story and saved the day. When I told her about the 30 day menu selection she laughed and said "we need 72 hours, let's do this".

I wanted food trucks at my wedding so basically needed a caterer to help me with a few passed items…read moreand a whole staff and rentals. We were very open with each caterer we met with in letting them know that we didn't know exactly what was needed because there wasn't a blue print for the wedding idea we had in mind. There was another caterer I was debating on but thought the food was very good from catering by design and asked Christa if she could match their quote. I even gave Christa a copy of the proposal from the other caterer since she asked for all details. She matched the price but when it came down to the day and the details of the contract I realized that she did not offer anywhere close to the services the other caterer had offered. I thought I could trust Christa to include everything I needed since she told us she had catered at the conservatory at the Sussex county fairgrounds before. She and her staff had showed up late and did not get the beers on ice early enough for them to chill before my guest were being served. Her staff barely cleaned up the tables and she dismissed them by 7:40, she wanted to take away the coffee at 7:45 when my wedding didn't end until 9:30, she just argued with my day of coordinator towards the end of her night, when we talked to her about the clean up she said it wasn't in our contract and wanted us to pull up the contract in the middle of our wedding. My fiancé, day of coordinator, and I stayed at the venue to clean everything up because Christa never wrote that her staff will clean through the end. I basically paid her a shit ton of money to come by to pass out food and that was it. Some of this is partially my fault because I didn't question her on every detail of the contract, but my fiancé and I both thought that we could trust her to include everything we needed. I am absolutely disgusted with how unprofessional they were at my wedding and felt that I was completely scammed by them when I came to them with complete transparency and sharing another proposal I received. The only reason I am giving them 2 starts is because their food was really good; however, I still I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND CATERING BY DESIGN.
