The whole point of me bringing him was for her to meet him, see how he does. When I asked if it might be better to bring him later that day when she would be around, she said no I'm having company!! Again WHAT?? How much attention and time was she planning on spending with my cat who would probably have been frightened as can be. I would NEVER bring my cat there and I'm so happy that I learned what she's truly all about beforehand. Looks can be deceiving!!

My husband and I LOVE Dogwood Cottage - but most importantly, our dog Reggie LOVE LOVE LOVES it…read more :) In fact, we love it so much that we take him for occasional daycare and whenever we need boarding all the way up to Melrose from our home in Roxbury. We have a beyond-wonderful dogwalker who takes him with other dogs for daily jaunts in the woods, but we needed a day care that could take him on days when the cleaning folks come and for boarding, since he's a big, high-energy dog who needs a lot of stimulation and is really too much work to foist upon friends. We were a little gunshy coming to Dogwood because we had a less-than-great experience with a local doggie day care, but Dogwood quickly eased our fears. The staff is wonderful - Reggie runs right to them without so much as a look over his little doggie shoulder when I drop him off. He always comes home tuckered out, and even after somewhat lengthy boarding stays, he never displays any "bad habits." If anything, he actually seems a little bit better behaved after his stays at Dogwood! The staff is great with humans, too - they're always flexible and responsive, and have consistently accommodated every request they can. I'm a mildly obsessive dog mom, and I'll be forever grateful that we have a place where we feel comfortable leaving Reggie when we have to go out of town. In addition to the outdoor play area, they also offer half-hour and hourlong walks, which make me feel so much better about leaving him. He's so comfortable there, I really get the sense that it's more of a second home for him and less of a boarding situation. Some commenters have said it's pricey, but I have to disagree; the value I get from the excellent care and peace of mind far exceeds the price tag. Thanks, Dogwood!

But ever since the transition a few years ago to Riverdog, we've seen it steadily decline. While the staff are friendly (hence two stars) the place is absolutely filthy. You just need to walk in to know what I'm talking about. The place smells terrible and there is dog hair literally everywhere - piles and clumps of it. I'm not sure when the last time was that someone vacuumed the main area (maybe never??) We've tried bringing this issue up with management several times, and while they have nodded politely, nothing has been done. While I'm not a fan of publicly posting, I'm hoping that maybe this kicks things into gear? If you want a much better option for a comparable price, we now send our dog to CommonDog in Everett. The facility is immaculate (lobby is gorgeous, cameras allow you to log in and watch your pup play all day, and the staff are amazing). It's a bit further, but luckily on the way to work (for anyone working in Boston). Until Riverdog improves, we would recommend Common Dog as a far superior alternative! And if Riverdog gets better, I'll be the first to update this post - as we would really love to have a good dog daycare in the Melrose area!

Previous to then, we had always used kennels when traveling. At that time, our two dogs were young and healthy and emotionally balanced. We still weren't happy about boarding them, but we felt it was a safe option for them. We had had horrible experiences with different kennels -- including one that was located inside an animal hospital -- and we swore we would never board our pets again. We didn't know who we could trust to take care of our high maintenance dogs and to go in and out of our home several times a day. Who would do all of the things our aging pets needed, such as give them medicine, feed them their special diet, keep an eye on their health and so on. (One of our dogs was diagnosed with a slow growing cancer last September and the other is a dachshund that suffers from separation anxiety.) Well, we can't recommend Wendi, Michele and Naomi enough! In fact, all of the pet sitters they have sent us over the last three years have been so loving and caring. These sitters really love animals and you can tell from the notes they leave for us that they truly enjoy their work caring for the pets. ABW pet sitting is like finding a terrific babysitter where your comfort level is as high as it can go! I would trust them with anything!! We go away without fear now and when we return, our pets are exactly as they were when we left... they aren't anxious or upset in any way and they look great! ** During this most recent trip our lock wasn't working properly on the front door. They have terrible customer service. Every time you call the person answering the phone has zero…read moreanswers and says someone will call you back when they can, but then we never get a call back. They don't pay attention to the dogs well-being nearly enough, for example we have been leaving our puppy there and have told them that he is having diarrhea but every time we pick him up and ask if his poop was normal they says, "oh yeah, everything was fine" or "I don't know, I didn't work with him" and then when he gets home he continues to have diarrhea. They don't interact with their clients at all, at the end of the day they are just telling you what you need to hear to leave them alone. The only positive thing I can say is that our puppy comes home looking happy and he is tired from playing. Edit: 3 days after posting this review, instead of reaching out to me they called and tried to bully my fiancee into changing it deleting this review. Rather than addressing the issues she just denied any problems and ended up just making my fiancee upset.
