The service was phenomenal, they were really friendly there and cracking jokes. Sadly, I can't say as much for the food. I had my very first appetizer of "gravy fries" which tasted great going down, but they didn't sit well to be honest. And I ordered the pulled pork hoagie, which tasted like liquid smoke, and it was too overwhelming for me. It also didn't have enough BBQ sauce, fairly dry. So my fiancé and I traded meals because he didn't mind it. I had his open-faced roast beef sandwich. It was your standard diner fare - they served it with a side of peaches, which I don't see often in other restaurants. The jarred type of peaches. I liked the mashed potatoes, but again, tasted like diner fare. This is a great place for when you're passing through, but I can't say it's down home southern cooking or refined either. It's really more to satisfy your hunger pains. The servers were really nice though, and it made up for the food in my opinion. On to the really good part - the pies! They offer quite a few options. We had the cherry and the caramel apple. You can get them with ice cream. We went without ice cream. They served them warm, and they were so amazzzzing. I especially liked the caramel apple pie because it had walnuts in it. Nice surprise. But I guess you've gotta watch out if you have an allergy! Not such a nice surprise in that case. Oh, also, the booths have lots of writing/graffiti on them. Where we sat, it said "Donald Trump was here" and "Reserved for Redskins fans only." Yup, we were definitely in West Virginia! read more

Great food and excellent friendly service. We had the local trout grilled and pulled pork dinner. Our side of mashed potatoes had excellent gravy. Coleslaw was good and rolls were very fresh. Our shared desert of Death by Chocolate Cake was excellent. Lots of other choices of desserts. Very reasonable prices. We've stopped here several times for lunch when we roll through on the bikes. They welcome us in, we generally get whatever the special is today. Well I added this to my month long yearly vacation. Traveled 500 miles out of my way. I had worked there 45 years ago and as a 16 year old kid ran the kitchen while the sheriffs wife ran the tables, lived upstairs with the owner Norman and his family. It was always crowded with the locals, everyone was friendly. The sheriffs wife Polly I seem to remember her name always had time to talk to everyone. It seems it has definitely lost the small town feeling. No matter how many movie star pictures you have on the wall or how cool the plates look or the neat names you have on the menu the place does not have the small town friendly atmosphere. Food horrible and the waitress had no time for anyone, definitely made me feel like an intruder. No you can't go home again, but at least I found my name scribbled on the booth. read more

Have eaten at High's every time I have visited Monterey. It's a wonderful "Sunday drive" spot to eat. Feels like back in the 1950s. Everyone is friendly and generous. What is wonderful is the Trout, which is local. They fry it or grill it. I get the platter which comes with two vegs and a roll, or you can get the sandwich. The fried version is absolutely delicious with a light breading and not greasy at all, and a tasty tartar sauce. Afterwards we go to one of the trout farms to pick up a box of frozen filets to take home. Can't beat it. read more

We stopped here for breakfast on the way back from Snowshoe. Pancakes were so-so--one of mine was undercooked. Coffee seemed watered down to me as well. That said,I would stop here again, since this is a refueling stop for us. And I'd prefer to eat here than a fast-food restaurant. read more

First, Monterey, VA is a great little town. Quiet, quaint and clean as a whistle. Everyone you walk by says hello and when you cross the street cars stop and wave you on. Now, High's...a comfortable, clean and genuine atmosphere. Food was great! Definitely made from scratch burger. Not something bought frozen, thawed and grilled. The service was fast and very pleasant. Just like the folks on the street, the patrons and staff at High's were friendly and authentic. We spent a wonderful day in Monterey and decided to have lunch at High's Restaurant. We both had the trout sandwich. Both of us said it was the best fish sandwich we'd ever had! This was our second visit to High's and we very much enjoyed ourselves. Brought my parents this time and they had only good things to say about the food. The owner was very friendly and recommended an awesome lemon blueberry cake that we couldn't get enough of! The fried trout was particularly good and everyone was a fan of all of the homemade sauces, especially the ranch dressing. No complaints. We will definitely be back the next time we stay in Monterey. During a weekend adventure on the motorcycle and following rt250 (which is amazing), we stopped at High's for lunch. The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly, as you would expect in a small town. The prices were extremely reasonable - I had a bbq pork platter and my companion had a cheesburger. We also got desserts, a pecan pie and a blackberry cobbler, and they were excellent. This is a nice change from all the chain restaurants you usually find up here in northern VA, and if I'm ever back down that way again, I'll for sure eat there again. read more

Went here with my wife and two younger sons, the food was awesome. I had the fried trout, it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. My wife had the barbecue sandwich and liked it, and my sons both had the chicken tenders (its a toss up between this place and Chilis as to who has the best chicken tenders) which were battered and not breaded. Stopped here yesterday for lunch. Going into High's feels like you are stepping back into time. We had a super nice server, Michael, and a very good lunch. My lunch companion had the pork barbecue, which was awesome. For dessert, we shared a slice of warmed apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I have to say that this was one of the best pieces of pie that I have ever eaten in my entire life-- homemade and delicious. You cannot beat the prices and the restrooms are clean. Thanks Michael, and thanks Highs, we'll be back for sure. Was riding up Rt. 250 an stopped in Monterey Va an got a room. The other bikers at the motel said go to Highs. They were right. Walked in an was greeted by a young girl an sat us down. Breakfast was eggs an a thick slice of ham an rye toast. I think 3 or 4 bucks, it was great. It was a good local vibe with families an riders. Will be back when in the area. Stopped by heading to SnowShoe Mtn for the weekend and picked this place out of the side of the road. Walked in and it's just a great, small, homey place. Sat down at one of the wooden booths, was helped right away. Server was extremely nice and patient with us seeing we had no idea what to get since I was starving! There's a lot of good options and they serve breakfast alllll day. Ordered, food was quick and tasted great - loved the pulled pork. The homemade eggs rolls are great by the way!
