This restaurant was right across the street from our B&B and was recommended by one of the workers who also happened to work there too (very small town ). From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcome. The ambiance is very casual, family friendly with country music playing. Our server was so nice and friendly and made some suggestions which we took. I got the chili, tater tot Mac and cheese and my friend got the Monterey Hero sub and since it was $1 wing Wednesday we got a basket of 6 boneless wings with garlic Parmesan sauce. For dessert we had to try their ice cream. The brown butter bourbon truffle was excellent! My friend got the mint which was also very good and the peanut butter caramel cookie dough. We Have a Cabin in the area and have seen this place as we travel to Monterey. We were greeted by a tall gray haried gentleman that was the epitome of nice,all the wait staff were awsome and attentive. The food was excellent and very plentiful,the chicken wings were huge and meaty and the Italian salad was delicious. I would highly recommend this establishment to all! read more

Can't get over the food at this place! Everything is top-notch. Atmosphere is comfy and friendly, and if you're from out of town, they have a great gift shop for those maple country souvenirs. The wings are good enough to make your toes curl! I've seen some comments about slow service, but keep in mind that It's a small town where customers and staff interact like family and friends (if you need something, don't just sit there waiting... speak up and flag down someone who'll be happy to get it for you). For a lot of the staff, it's their first job - so cut them some slack and enjoy some of the best eats that Highland County has to offer! read more

I was having an ice cream craving and came across the Highlander. When we arrived we decided to sit down and have a late dinner and that was the BEST decision ever!! Sadly I don't have any photos because I ate the food up. Best fried chicken and onion rings I've ever had! Sometimes when I eat fried foods they taste heavy with grease and that was not the case here. It tasted clean and crispy. The service was prompt and I loved the decor of the restaurant, and the cookie dough specialty milkshake was to die for. Definitely stop in! read more

The Highlander is a new restaurant in our small, rural area and our town could not be more excited for this local eat. Friendly folks roam the beautifully renovated building in black t-shirts and offer service with a smile. We can tell everyone is getting the hang of this new business but, regardless of working out the kinks, Highlander staff aim to please. The sweat ethic is noticeable - we know smooth sailing is soon to follow the effort. The style of the place makes you feel like you're vacationing in the mountains. The food matches the elevated but still down to earth feel with sub sandwiches plus pizza and wings. We really like the fact that they serve fried oysters - a local holiday staple. While the prices are slightly steep ($12 for a specialty shake?!), we chalk it up to the economy and, honestly, the milkshakes are worth it... we keep coming back for them. The pizza is ooey gooey cheesey with a rustic hand tossed type of crust. My fam is singing the praises so far. Hope our rural county keeps this place for many years to come. read more

Stopped for a quick bite on a road trip. Great bread on my Italian sub. Meats were fresh. A very enjoyable lunch.

The service is friendly. It a new place run by a nice couple new to the area. Fully remodeled with smoke Parking out front along with some outside seating to people watch in this Rockwellian town of 170. The wait staff are young kids with a friendly smile and super attentive. The food choices are sammies, pizza, chicken and some pasta dishes. It's standard American cuisine at affordable prices. Booth seating. Plenty of space for the family. Oh, and they have an ice cream bar at the entrance. Some pretty delicious options like sundays and old school banana splits. Very cool place. In the front they have a room with pamphlets to all the surrounding local businesses so it's a one-stop shop for info on how to explore Highland County and the surrounding area. I don't know if the food is good or not... I stood at the counter for 6.5 minutes waiting to put in an order and nobody waited on me... There were people checking out and there were some confusion at the register, but they didn't even acknowledge that I was there. They are new... I'll give them one more chance. read more

Usually pass through this area every year to view fall foliage and looking for lunch we found this place. A renovated building with a rather strange design inside with sterile decor. Greeted with "how many" no pleasantness and waitstaff followed through with same demeanor with our orders. Unsweetened iced tea tasted like instant so was not surprised and didn't expect too much from the quality of food. I don't recall all we ordered however the salad was freshly made quite good. The zucchini sticks were overcooked and hard when I mentioned this to waitstaff the comment was "they were cooked according to instructions on the package" The meat lovers pizza had skimpy toppings was undercooked. I again mentioned to staff and was met by a barrage of defensiveness and a comment of "that's the way WE cook pizza here". ....(really?) half cooked dough? I feel the entire group of women who make up the staff here including the owner lack courteous customer service as well as diplomatic skills altogether. The owner did ask if I wanted to recook the rest of the pizza, however I do not send anything back in a restaurant for obvious reasons. My advice to the owner....you have a relatively new restaurant now hire an experienced cook and just be nice to ALL, train your staff to follow your example.
