As I walked in the bartender yells at me, "What part of banned for life don't you understand....?" Fortunately, the PTSD keeping me on perpetual edge kicked in immediately and I responded, "Hey you're wearing my t-shirt you... give it back. And, how can I be banned from a place I've never been before?" The bartender and I then got down to the long history of Marty's PM (formally in Five Points), the legal and jurisdictional control of lifetime bans, and general 'long time no see, how you been?' chit chat. The place is situated in a nearly empty strip mall, which gives it a slightly post-apocalyptic vibe. It was nevertheless pretty crowded. They seem to be serving the same healthcare professionals/biker crowd that used to populate the 5-points version back in the day. I didn't try the food, but it looked pretty good. The prior version had one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches to be found. My only knock on the place would be the lack of draft beers. I toughed it out drinking Jack and Cokes. It's a little out of the way for me, but I suspect I'll be back sooner rather than later.

The atmosphere is chill unless a Bama football game is on! I really enjoyed watching the bama vs mizzou game here a few weeks ago. The staff is fun and personable. As of recently, the food menu has been updated. They now have ballpark nachos and they are outstanding. TRUST ME!!! Marty's GM has my heart again.

You'll find breakfast cocktails, homemade biscuits, breakfast comfort food as well as flat screen T.V.s and friendly service rounding out your experience. Today I opted for the server recommended Freebird Benedict, $15, and I enjoyed their creative take on the classic Eggs Benedict. This creative breakfast entree features their biscuit- split with fried chicken, poached egg and topped with their chicken sausage gravy. Definitely a big breakfast and shareable! Loved the tender biscuit, the crunch of the fried chicken and the savory flavorful chicken sausage gravy! The side of seasoned Moon Dust potatoes were great, too. I look forward to returning and trying their French Toast, Pancakes or a plain, yummy biscuit!

After being seated, I noticed how colorful and whimsical the decor was. But because it was so crowded, I didn't get a lot of pictures. I ordered the garden veggie scramble with the moon dusted potatoes and a side of beyond sausage. My guy ordered the waffle breakfast. The food was just as delicious as we remembered it to be. The star is always those creamy grits. I'm not sure how they make them, but I wish they would tell me their secret. The biscuits are always light and fluffy, and with the apple butter that comes with it, it's a match made in heaven. Pro Tip: I've ordered food from here courtesy of DoorDash but it's always been a disaster. The order was always missing random items or I received the wrong order. I do not recommend ordering through a 3rd party; go in person if at all possible.

The food line moved pretty quick, they obviously have a lot of regulars. I had the fried chicken (which was impressively puffed up, but could have used some more flavor/spice), creamed corn, fried okra, and mac and cheese. They earned their five stars on that mac and cheese alone. Everywhere else (I know I sound crazy here) makes it too cheesy. My preferred, home cooked mac is much eggier, lighter in texture. I'll always be a fan of creamed corn. My dad and I split a slice of the toasted coconut pie, which was scrumptious. I've had so many good coconut things lately, I'm starting to think I don't dislike coconut. My dad said the fried green tomatoes were pretty good. This is kinda a hike out from Birmingham proper, but if I'm ever in the area again, I'll certainly be back.

It's the only place I've found that is up to par with my grandmother's home-cooking. And, that says a lot! I'm very fond of what she serves our family. Service is good at Irondale Cafe, southern hospitality! Atmosphere is cafeteria style, like stepping back in time. If you want to see what it really looks like, watch the movie Whistle Stop Cafe. They filmed it at this location. Not only do people come here for the food, but for that reason too. It's a major tourist attraction. They move you through the line pretty quickly, but it may be out the door and down the street. It's definitely a place you need to try, at least once in your life. To say you've been, if nothing else. But, I will add, locals dine here quite frequently, and I would too, if I were a local resident.
