We went into the Hideout after a long day at Yosemite as it was the only spot still open after 9pm on a Saturday night in Mariposa. We ordered 3 salads and 3 sodas and 90 minutes later we were still waiting for our food. We asked for our food to go at the 60 minute mark and they weren't able or willing to do that. At the end when I asked for a refund, I received no apology or explanation and the bartender still charged me for the drinks. I asked for a credit for the inconvenience of leaving the bar still hungry and very unhappy now and she offered a single drink credit. Avoid this place like the plague. Mistakes happen but they're easily overcome with just a slight touch of customer service of which this establishment sorely lacks. read more

Well it took a minute to actually locate this hidden gem, as it is not directly on the street, but rather on the side & into a cellar of sorts; it's well worth the hunt! Very casual, easy going place. Lots of choices - started with a draft beer, lemonade & waters. The menu is diverse, made me wonder as to quality - prepare to be impressed. It takes a bit as everything is made to order, so have another beer & cool your jets. Decent basement, dive bar type of place. One of the few places open late in Mariposa. They have a pool table and TV to watch a game. Spacing is a little tight inside. They have a decent selection of beers. The food is just ok though. Standard bar type food. Would probably be better to grab a bite somewhere else and stop by here for drinks. We got the nachos which were ok, but a good portion. I got the shrimp tacos special, could have used some salsa. My friend got the chicken drumsticks, they had some decent seasoning but could have used some extra time in the fryer. Service was ok. Order at the front. They don't give an itemized bill by the way. We grabbed lunch to go from here on our way home from Yosemite. Ordered shrimp tacos and fish and chips. *fish and chips: decent, better than the over-fried version that I've had at many other places. The fish is tender, and there's lots of tartar sauce provided. The fries are fresh. I do feel like it's a bit bland, and can be jazzed up a notch. *shrimp tacos: the texture is perfect, which is a rare and beautiful thing! Most places overcook shrimps so they're chewy like rubber, but Hideout gets it just right; they're tender and moist without being undercooked. The amount of sauce is perfect, too, generous without drowning everything out. It's a fine line to walk. The only thing off - I feel like something's missing from the sauce, it's a bit... bland? Clashing? I feel like an ingredient's missing that can elevate it, but am unsure of what that may be. But it IS good and I'd gladly order again. Huh, it seems like the pattern here (based only on one visit haha) is that the cook time, texture, and quality are great, but the flavors can be elevated (not that they're bad). And I mean... it's bar food, I'm totally nitpicking lol. It was empty when we went in around noon. The server (bartender?) who helped us was polite but distant; I think we went in right when they opened, so maybe we got in the way. There's lots to love in the space: the Pac Man machine, the dollar bills, the extensive menu. The vibe is vintage, kitschy, and fun. Hi there, Bernard here. A few months ago, me and my family spent our entire night experiencing the rich Mariposa culture inside the Hideout Saloon, and lucky us! It was karaoke night. We got to sing my son, Jombo's, favorite song, Drinking Problem by Midland. He is only 12 but already has the beautiful voice of an angel! The service in this wonderful establishment reminded me of the warm welcome feeling of when my Peepaw would make his signature grilled whiskey chicken recipe. Mariposa made me see California in a new light! The Hideout Saloon is a very cool place with dollar bills plastered all over the wall. It's in a cool basement down a side street about 75 feet down from the main street.. the thing is you have to find it. It is the Hideout Saloon after all. Which is part of the experience. I travel all over the Sierra foothills and love the rustic term of the small towns. This place has to be one of the best. I had lunch so I didn't have any cocktails, but the food was amazing. The atmosphere was incredibly friendly and so unique and charming it has to be visited. read more

We were in Mariposa for just one night and the front desk guy at the Best Western recommended the Hideout Saloon for a drink and some munchies. We were able to walk there from the hotel very easily. This place is great if you want the dive bar kinda vibe. The walls and ceiling are plastered with dollar bills that customers have signed. My buddy and I stayed in Mariposa while doing a 4 day trek to Yosemite. With that being an hour away and wanting to catch sunsets, we really appreciated that this little watering hole stayed open until 2am and served food late. All the staff were amazing especially Jess who served our drinks on 3 occasions (and works the kitchen on Wednesdays). Great selection of local brews, loved the fish tacos, and they have a free pool table and outside seating. A lot of the other restaurants and bars in this small town close at 9, so head down under the street (look for the sign that says hideout this way on the sidewalk) and you won't be disappointed. read more

A really great little dive bar underneath the street in Mariposa town. Lots of personality, friendly bartender a few locals the service was slow, but it was OK because it was interesting. The ambience was also interesting early 1900 saloon with original floors and interesting language written on some of the bills that line the saloon serving as wallpaper. my friend had a baked potato, which was very good not seasoned quite enough, but salt helped. The onion rings were hand battered and pretty good. Don't sit by the bar unless you want to stare at part posteriors. If you have a chance to stop by Downtown Mariposa, stop by here for the food and cocktails. This Hideout Saloon is indeed hidden. We only found it thanks to Google maps and a somewhat informative sign. Upon entry, you can't miss the dollar bills paper mache'd all over the walls. The place definitely has character.They also have a pool table. The cocktails are affordable, varied, and delicious. Food came out hot and fresh! We shared the Cajun shrimp, fried pickle fries, mozzarella sticks, and beer battered onions. Come here for the food and drink! read more

We found this recommendation on Yelp and then asked the host at Autocamp, where we stayed, about it, and she said they had fantastic tacos as long as you are good with a local dive bar. We love the feel of the place as soon as we walk in. Money on everything is something we've seen in other areas, too. Don't look too closely at the dollar bills hanging high on the ceiling. We sat at the bar, which was convenient because you could also order at the bar, no matter where you sat. I ordered one of their cocktails, their version of a French 75. It was good and my husband had a Moscow mule which was also good. Of course, the tacos are one of our meals. The taco options were fish or shrimp and we picked grilled shrimp. The shrimp tacos were delicious. We decided to stick with a good theme and had their shredded chicken quesadilla. It had so much shredded chicken and was phenomenal, maybe one of my favorites. I don't think I have had shredded chicken in a quesadilla before, but now it is my favorite. We also suggest asking for extra sour cream and green salsa. We followed the small signs off the main street, down a stairway and onto an outside eating area. We were welcomed as family upon entering the saloon. The entire establishment was covered with dollar bills with each one from previous patrons and each one had different signatures or messages. The food, as described by the pictures, were some of the best food we had the honor of eating. Their menu was extensive but, unlike other restaurants, this eatery was not a restaurant... it was a Saloon. It was not a bar nor a pub but had the pleasure of referring itself to its highest level name, a saloon. I awarded the Hideout 5 stars because I was not allowed to give it 6. If you ever are walking around a town and see a small sign for an eatery, give it a chance. In doing so today, we saw that the town of Mariposa held within its history... a gem. I am editing my previous review from below. The next morning after our experience at the hideout saloon I received a message from Gabriel the owner. He was apologetic and told me our experience isn't a common one and he wanted to rectify the situation. Which he did. He offered us credit to come back and try out the restaurant once more. We went back March 22 and ordered fries and the Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. They were delicious! They had cheese, bell peppers and mushrooms. Very tasty and the bread was so soft. The fries were also delicious. At first I was a little nervous going back because of my previous review, but the server was very sweet and so was Gabriel. I'm happy he reached out to me and took the time to find out what happened and really wanted us to come back. Regarding the wait, it was extremely accurate as well. We popped into this dive bar for lunch on a Monday, on our way to Yosemite. We decided to try this place based on online reviews. The place didn't disappoint. The place is dark, has a dive bar vibe, but the service was incredible and the food was outstanding. We shared a salad (house-made, fresh lettuce and vegetables, home-made dressing) and a prime rib dip. Yep, real prime rib (not pressed beef) with a great au jus.
