    Said 26 dollar whiskey!

$26 for a neat pour of Four Roses Small Batch at The Hideout Saloon is... bold. Not in a good way--more in a "how much can we get away with?" kind of way. This isn't a rare bottle. It's not hard to find. It's not something you expect to come with a luxury markup and zero warning. Charging that without any visible pricing isn't elevated--it's opportunistic. And before the inevitable defensive reply: this isn't about misunderstanding the menu or "not appreciating quality." It's about basic transparency and fair pricing. If you're confident in your prices, post them. Stand behind them. Own it. Right now, it just feels like a gotcha--and no amount of ambiance fixes that. If your business model relies on customers finding out the price after they've taken a sip, that's not a vibe... it's a strategy. I won't be back, but I will be reading the response--those seem to be part of the experience here too.

Well it took a minute to actually locate this hidden gem, as it is not directly on the street, but rather on the side & into a cellar of sorts; it's well worth the hunt! Very casual, easy going place. Lots of choices - started with a draft beer, lemonade & waters. The menu is diverse, made me wonder as to quality - prepare to be impressed. It takes a bit as everything is made to order, so have another beer & cool your jets. There was an order of the chicken special sandwich, chipotle, lettuce, tomato - very well executed , an order of chicken tacos & another order of quinoa tacos. Not a spec left to be had! Service was stellar. No complaints other than it's too far to just go grab a bite, but so worth the stop if you're in the area of Mariposa.

French dip - A French dip sandwich featuring sliced roast beef and melted cheese on a toasted bun is presented on a metal tray. The tray also includes sliced pickles, potato salad, and a small container of dipping au jus sauce. The background shows a dimly lit restaurant setting with a chalkboard menu partially visible.

Dive bar/Hidden gem, legit hidden. This place rocks. Maybe it was the long flight across the country but the daily drink special combined with the locally sourced fun bar food hit the spot. They smoke their own meat so we got two smoked meat sandwiches steak and pork. The server was amazing.

Nachos - A platter of nachos features crispy tortilla chips covered with melted cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, jalapeño slices, and chopped cilantro. Two small black containers hold salsa and guacamole, placed on the nachos. The dish is served on a black and white checkered paper lining on a dark wooden table, with glasses of water and lemon wedges nearby, suggesting a casual dining setting.

Decent basement, dive bar type of place. One of the few places open late in Mariposa. They have a pool table and TV to watch a game. Spacing is a little tight inside. They have a decent selection of beers. The food is just ok though. Standard bar type food. Would probably be better to grab a bite somewhere else and stop by here for drinks. We got the nachos which were ok, but a good portion. I got the shrimp tacos special, could have used some salsa. My friend got the chicken drumsticks, they had some decent seasoning but could have used some extra time in the fryer. Service was ok. Order at the front. They don't give an itemized bill by the way. Maybe you have to request one? Street parking or a small lot across the street.

Coleslaw..... - A serving of coleslaw featuring shredded cabbage, including purple and green varieties, coated in a creamy dressing is shown in a disposable foam container. The dish appears to be part of a casual meal, possibly from a takeout or fast-food setting, with a background that includes a table surface and part of a person's leg.

2/04/25 Getting lunch for tomorrow! I called and the worker Ron answered. Very kind ordered the Barbie chicken. He said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I went in to get it. Hideout Saloon It is exactly that! Lol. Hidden. You take the stairs down into it. Workers are Great! Clearly they know. One got my attention after I was trying to locate it. Going inside, it's dark. Pool table and large bar. Greeted by kind worker who joked about it being hidden. Perfect name! Order was ready! Paid for it and he wished a good day! Appreciated! 2/5/25 Lunchtime! Sandwich split. It came with coleslaw too! My half was DELICIOUS! Chicken cooked perfectly with tasty BBQ sauce. Great coleslaw too! Mother said her half was Really Great! Great service & Great lunch! Highly recommended!

Amazing decor - The image shows the interior of a bar or club with walls, ceiling, and fixtures densely decorated with dollar bills, graffiti, and drawings. The space features wooden beams and a ceiling with lighting fixtures. The decor includes various handwritten messages, drawings, and stickers, giving it a chaotic, artistic appearance. The bar area is visible with some equipment and signage, emphasizing a casual, unconventional ambiance.

We were in Mariposa for just one night and the front desk guy at the Best Western recommended the Hideout Saloon for a drink and some munchies. We were able to walk there from the hotel very easily. This place is great if you want the dive bar kinda vibe. The walls and ceiling are plastered with dollar bills that customers have signed. It's so fun just to look at them all and see what people have written. The gal who was working (I forgot to keep the receipt so I don't remember her name) was awesome. Very friendly and helpful. We got some drinks and nachos and everything was tasty! It all hit the spot!!

Neat place. If you did not know it was there or had looked it up you would miss it. Dollar bills all over the walls you could spend hours looking at them. The poor girl last night was running her bottom off trying to take care of everyone. We ordered French dip and fried pickles with one cocktail and three beers. Food was cooked great and served hot. Bill was over $80. Kinda steep.

Breakfast menu and margaritas wonderful handmade margaritas could've used a touch more tequila but they were wonderful

A really great little dive bar underneath the street in Mariposa town. Lots of personality, friendly bartender a few locals the service was slow, but it was OK because it was interesting. The ambience was also interesting early 1900 saloon with original floors and interesting language written on some of the bills that line the saloon serving as wallpaper. my friend had a baked potato, which was very good not seasoned quite enough, but salt helped. The onion rings were hand battered and pretty good. Don't sit by the bar unless you want to stare at part posteriors. Because everyone comes up right to the bar and stands there forever in order so if you want a little bit of privacy, sit away from the bar again fun good drinks and decent food

The soup was the best I have had in a while, with rich tomato flavor that was perfectly seasoned and had just the right consistency. The grilled cheese was nothing too special on its own, but it paired so well with the soup, especially to warm you up in the cold. The combination is classic comfort food executed beautifully, and you really can't go wrong with this order. The Grove House is absolutely worth planning your Yosemite trip around! It's the perfect stop to fuel up before heading into the park or to unwind after a day of hiking. The combination of good food, welcoming atmosphere, and that small-town charm makes it a must-visit when you're in Mariposa. I would definitely recommend trying this place out - it seems like one of the best restaurants in the area on the way to Yosemite. I'm already looking forward to my next visit and hoping to catch one of their live music nights!

Charles Street Dinner House, Mariposa: 2026 Mar 12 (4 of 5)…read more Let me start off by saying that we were extremely pleased with the service, thanks to Dillon (who showed genuine rapport), Tomben (his honest opinions) and Amya (who brought me piping hot water in a beautiful mug and teapot). Their friendly, yet professional attitude make this eatery stand out. (5 of 5) This eatery has a vintage feel and historical charm. We felt we could really relax and take our time instead of being rushed to order, eat, then leave. The atmosphere feels rustic, exposing the past. It was a time capsule for folks who enjoyed that era. FOOD: Sauteed Mushroom Soup: The soup arrived with garlic bread. The soup had an earthy, savoury and nutty texture. The rich, velvety mushrooms were bouncy and cooked well, while the umami-packed broth felt comforting. The garlic bread that accompanied the mushroom soup had a perfect balance of textures - heavily buttered, with savoury garlic flavour. The golden-brown, crispy exterior was not overly toasted and the sticks were enhanced with a touch of herbal flavour. (5 of 5) New Zealand Rack of Lamb: This was my order - cooked medium-rare. The perfectly cooked meat was tender - unfortunately lacked seasoning, but a dash of salt brought this to a perfect 5. (5 of 5) I had a choice of potatoes or rice pilaf and made a wrong decision. The rice pilaf looked like baby food, and the fresh red pepper over-powered the entire dish. I tried a small scoop and was disappointed. Needless to say, I couldn't eat another bite of the rice. (1 of 5) My vegetables were mostly cooked well. They had a bit of crunch and texture but not raw. My dinner came with Tomato Soup. The soup tasted nutty and lemony, with a slight heat - and has a good aftertaste. It was silky and smooth, rich, and velvety. (5 of 5) Scallone: Our other order came with onion soup. My dinner partner had the privilege of tasting one of the best scallone years ago and was hoping to bring back great memories of this special dish he loved. This marriage of blending ground abalone and scallops is a savoury dish formed into patties. It is then breaded and lightly pan-fried in butter. The texture is supposed to be tender yet firm. The temperature was perfect but the patty came out almost like a regular pancake. A chunk of fresh red pepper was also thrown in, perhaps for colour, but it overpowered the dish. The pilaf rice was also a no-no. When the server came and asked how we enjoyed the dishes, I had to be blunt and said, "I didn't like the rice". Our server apologized and immediately offered to remove the rice on both plates and asked if we'd like potatoes instead. My partner opted for the baked potato. (5 of 5) The onion soup that accompanied this order was also a fail. Overall, this dinner was a 2 of 5. We were there to celebrate my birthday, so for dessert, we got Coconut Crème Brulee. Even though it wasn't cooked evenly, the light flavour of the coconut did not take over the mild flavour of the crème brulee. A lovely ending to an interesting dinner... and the crème brulee was a birthday treat, on the house. (4 of 5) Would we return? I think we would. That is exactly what happened during my recent dinner at Elderberry House. I visited with a group of four, and between us, we had two gluten-free diners and one vegetarian. After a quick heads-up the day before, the restaurant handled our needs with total ease. We went for the five-course tasting menu, and it was incredible from start to finish. We kicked things off with one of the best oysters I have ever had, followed by a beautiful tuna presentation. The kitchen even looked out for our gluten-free friends with a special version of their herbal-butter focaccia that was actually delicious. By the time the main courses arrived, I honestly could not decide if I liked my beef or my friend's snap pea risotto better; every single bite was pure perfection. The cocktails were another high point. My first drink was great, but after chatting with our server, Jordan, I decided to try the Last Word. It featured that hard-to-find green chartreuse, and I am a little annoyed to report that I have a new favorite cocktail that requires such a rare ingredient. The service is what really made the night so special. Jordan was so charismatic and helpful, making sure we were perfectly taken care of all evening. He was so good that I almost worried a second visit would not be the same without him, though the rest of the staff quickly put that fear to rest. Abby was so friendly and responsible for a truly unique but perfect-for-the-vibe playlist, and Chris the mixologist even stopped by to geek out about gin and cocktails with us. From the genuine care for our food sensitivities to the clever touch of the iPad check-in hidden in an elegant binder, it was a night for the books. The meals however, I'm mixed on. So the first time, I decided to order their "grilled ceasar". All I can say is this is apparently deconstructed and is anything *but* a caesar...I'll grill this one personally and just say pass...Then I tried the pan-seared duck breast...It felt undercooked and flavorless, and even after cooking it a little more, it still felt disappointingly bland. After barely finishing the duck, I quite literally thought to myself "got any grapes?" and waddled away to the convenience store for a microwavable meal after that... Brutal? Absolutely...Now you're probably thinking "If your experience was so bad, why should I bother eating here?" with how vitriolic I was about it. One bad meal doesn't mean all of them were misses, and mind you, I'm only 1 of 5 in the group at the time...And one of them suggested that over what I originally wanted...The latter which we'll talk about next. Now the second time was actually much, *much* better. That time I ordered a tomato soup (which they had that time) and the Quatro Formaggi Mac. The mac was absolutely to die for. It was garnished with breadcrumbs, the cheeses were strong and bursting with flavor, and no matter what meat you have put in there, you'll walk away satisfied like a bear that stole someone's picnic! The third time was breakfast. Honestly I'd cannot complain; not much to say there though. But it was definitely good! I will warn you that, as far as I know, the menu has changed since I've last eaten there; some of these items may or may not be available anymore. Overall? A solid spot I'd recommend to anyone who managed to brave a perilous mountain drive and found their way to the Ranch!
