My girlfriend and I came on a Thursday night for dinner and we had a great time! We had to try the "crab" rangoons. I was so curious about them since they are vegan and they were great! My girlfriend isn't vegan like I am and she also thought they were very good and like the real thing. I got the tofu bahn mi as my meal and I enjoyed it. That night they also were testing a new beer that I believe they were brewing in house. I was so curious and I had to get it. Our waiter didn't mention that the restaurant automatically adds 20% to your check for service, so if you automatically add 20% like we do, you effectively tip 40%. I'm glad I was able to check out this bar finally! It had great interiors and friendly service. My friend and I ordered a cocktail each. Although there was a Halloween special menu, we decided to try the regular menu. I got the temple of doom with mezcal and rum and was not disappointed. It came in a small tiki barrel and it look me a while to finish it. We ordered crab rangoons and fish tacos. The rangoon was light and crispy and the tacos were refreshingly yummy. I'm so glad 4 years later I finally went back to Hidden Harbor and can update my review! I made a reservation last week for yesterday with my friend. You have to put $20 down, however it gets credited towards your bill. Each reservation is for 90 minutes which was plenty of time for dinner and 2 drinks. We sat in their back tented area and I loved it! All of the tables were spaced out and it was such a beautiful evening. We ordered our first round of drinks and food shortly after arriving. I was surprised at how fast everything came out. I ordered the Lost Horizon as my drink. The cucumber in the description won me over. It was really light, refreshing and not heavy on the alcohol. It was so good I ordered another. All of the drinks are so unique and pretty! For my food I ordered the soft shell crab sandwich special. It wasn't very pretty but what it lacked in appearance was made up for in flavor. The fries were also super good. I did ask at the end if they allow children- answer is yes, just note if you need a highchair on your reservation. Will be back! read more

I never thought that I would give this place a two star review. To be honest, I'm torn between giving one and two stars.... The host, and waitress were extremely kind. However, our dining experience was awful to say the least. First, I love the tiki concept... the decor is very tribal and unique... the drinks as well, from approx $12-$14 each you get a tiny drink that comes of course with flowers, sharks, umbrellas, all the fixins! Pretty, sure! However, after I drank one tropical drink I was wanting to switch to white wine. Their menu says that they have Chardonnay, but the waitress explained that they only carried one white wine at a time, and tonight's was Pinot Grigio. The only other white, sparkling Brut. Ok, so I ordered it. And for $10 I received the tiniest glass, really disappointed in that! We ordered the plantain nachos. After about 40 minutes waiting for them it was clear that they had forgotten about our order. When we asked about the nachos, the waitress seemed surprised that we didn't get them. About 15 minutes later she brought out regular nachos and explained that they had ran out of plantains...... "but don't worry, they're free" she said. Ok, great! I'm really never complaining about free food. However; I do complain about free food that isn't even really the food we ordered. To top it off, my water had an odd smell all evening and then I noticed the source... the moldy flip cap that was on our table, and what we poured our water from. Thumbs down, Hidden Harbor! I would be apprehensive to come back, or recommend this place to anyone. Outstanding implementation of the tiki concept. Food is that right balance of fat and spice that pairs perfectly with the citrus of the drinks. Decent amount of heat, too. Drinks menu contains a variety of adjustments to the old standards (e.g., their Painkiller is mezcal based with a chile flair), but you can get plenty of lime, sugar, and of course, rum rum rum. Blazingly fast service, too. I do appreciate that they build in a gratuity up front (and tell you they're doing so). Major date night win. We're out of towners now, so it'll be a while till we get back, but I'm totally going to check out the Cobra's Fang weekend dinners. read more

They were so rude. They really made us feel uncomfortable. The bartender who seemed to be in charge was so short with me for no reason. They didn't want to sit our group so they had us in a corner standing when we started heading up to the bar they had some snotty server come over and say he would take our order we couldn't order separate and pay seperate. We even asked if we could do 2 and he was like no. Then he had the nerve to say "we're trying to accommodate your group" but it's a bar we were 8. Why so unwelcoming? I absolutely had so much fun at this place. This was my first visit. You are transported to a little tropical oasis as soon as you walk through the door. The decor sets the mood of the place immediately. I dined on the small back patio during my visit. For appetizers we had Arancini and Fried Calamari. Both were delicious. Fried calamari can be hit or miss but this was actually good. It came with a really great dipping sauce. The arancini was a little fried ball with sweet potato and serrano served with a herb aioli. Each drinks comes served in a different glass. I thought that was a nice little touch. My drink was so so tasty. I had the Painkiller which is a pina colada drink. The cream included in the drink was good. I opted for the xtra rum float on top. It's a great place to meet friends. I can't figure to mention our server Roy. He was great!! Very cool restaurant! Full-on tiki bar with traditional Puerto Rican cuisine and delicious tropical drinks. I got the jaguar shark cocktail, which was huge and meant to be shared. Only $20, which was very reasonable for the size. The food was also very delicious and island-themed. A lot of plaintains, spiced meat, avocado, etc. The decor was very tiki and fun. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because they were out of rice, which is a pretty critical ingredient when the food is Puerto Rican. There aren't a ton of items on the menu so the lack of rice meant we couldn't get quite a few dishes we were interested in. read more

There are so many different ways to make a rum drink taste and they mastered them all. Service was cheerful and friendly. I recently visited Hidden Harbor in Pittsburgh with a group of friends, and I can honestly say it was one of the most disappointing and upsetting bar experiences I've ever had. From the moment we arrived, the staff was shockingly rude and made it clear they didn't want our business. We started as a party of 5, with another 5 friends planning to join later. When we explained this, they flat-out refused to accommodate a group of 10, even though we suggested a practical solution: securing a table for 5 initially and having the others sit separately at the bar, a corner area, or even a second table if available. They dismissed us without a second thought.As Indian-origin customers, the hostility felt personal--like they were judging us based on our background. The vibe was so off that I half-expected a racial slur to slip out, though thankfully it didn't come to that. When our other friends arrived, the staff begrudgingly allowed them to use a corner table but only provided three chairs for five people. We ended up ordering 8 cocktails--spending well over $200--hoping things might improve, but they didn't. When the final two friends showed up, we asked for two more chairs for the corner table, where there was plenty of space. The answer? A flat "no." Instead, they were forced to stand, even though the bar had space for 7 people and was practically empty. The staff insisted they couldn't sit there either--no explanation, just more refusals.By this point, we were fed up. The place felt hostile, almost like a sundown bar where brown people aren't welcome after a certain point. We were ready to leave, and then they had the audacity to tell us they couldn't accommodate us--as if that wasn't already painfully obvious. I have 9 eyewitnesses from that night who can back up every detail of this appalling treatment. I'm deeply hurt by how we were treated, and my conscience is heavy after this experience. It's clear to me that this wasn't just poor service--it was discrimination, a direct violation of Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits businesses like this from refusing service or accommodations based on race or national origin. I'm taking this seriously and will be consulting my lawyer to file a case against Hidden Harbor. If the owner sees this, please take a hard look at your staff. They were not just unprofessional--they were outright disrespectful and, frankly, awful people. I won't be back, and I'd warn anyone else to steer clear unless serious changes are made. read more

Came to hidden harbor for the first time about a week ago, had not been since before the pandemic. As I walked inside I saw 3 people in the entire place, I went to approach the bar where I was going to order a drink and wait for my date. The employees told me step back to the door and wait for hostess.. the hostess then asked me to provide a vaccine card with proof of booster, I told him I did not have the booster. He then showed me and my date to their outdoor "heated" patio, an open patio with blistering winds from either side a heat lamp and medal chairs and no cushions in the middle of January.. I went to move another heat lamp by us since my date was shivering, the waiter immediately came back out and moved it back and said it was a fire hazard. I would not recommend going here until they go out of business and new competent owners and workers run this place. Awful! read more

After a long day of work a few of my coworkers decided to make a trek from the downtown office to one of the hidden gems in Squirrel Hill. It was my first visit, and boy was I shocked at how great this place was. From the melo Island atmosphere to the tropical booth littered with comfy pillows. Our waitress was delightful, accommodating, and helpful. For a group our size she recommend the O.M.G (Oh My Guava) and OMG it was amazing. The tamarind really gave the drink an extra kick. Chris, the bartender, served me and I have a weird allergy and he took the time to write down what drinks I could have with is way above and beyond what I could or should expect. Also, food is amazing. You can tell it's made fresh. Lazy and most importantly they take the pandemic seriously and as a woman in science I feel safe here. I haven't gone out much since COVID due to comfort and I feel comfortable here. They do require proof of your vaccination status and your ID. I appreciate it so much. Hidden Harbor is my go-to place for cocktails and drinks in Squirrel Hill! They have a nice patio in the back which is great for summer nights. The drinks are tasty and beautifully presented. I also have tried all of their mocktails during my pregnancy and it was nice to have a fancy treat without the alcohol. Their apps and mains are also great. Our experience at Hidden Harbor this past Christmas was absolutely delightful! Tucked away in the pleasant residential neighborhood of Squirrel Hill in a little brick building, Hidden Harbor is a family friendly place where you can take children for dinner. My daughters found the atmosphere delightful, and the staff went out of their way to make them welcome - the girls enjoyed themselves immensely. HH is not immersive Polynesiana, but the décor is nevertheless replete with tikis (some large, gorgeous ones), nautical touches, tropical accents, and MCM art. The menus are works of art (and available for purchase as souvenirs). Overall, the atmosphere was extremely pleasant. I ordered a Temple of Doom (pictured) at the bar while we waited for our table ("Creamy coconut cools a mix of citrus, sumac and guajillo pepper, with smoky mezcal and navy rum") and wow, it was delicious - a great blend of heat, smoke and sweet - and comes with a fire show! Also, Sumac?!? I need more of that. There are non-alcoholic drinks on the menu, and the girls ordered a couple of Ghost Ships (pictured) and a Riptide with dinner, and were very happy with them. I cheated with my first dinner drink (pictured), Ground Control to Major Donn ("Three rums power a towering tribute to the Godfather of Tiki, with passion fruit, almond orgeat and allspice"), because it's one I've made one at home and knew I would love it. I tried two drinks from the Christmas menu (both pictured): the Molokai Mogwai ("Three rums power a bowl-full of goodness with whispers of ginger and warming allspice") was tasty, but the Christmas Cactus ("A south-of-the-border spin starring smoky mezcal, pineapple, almond and coconut") really knocked my socks off - superb! I should note that the food was terrific, too. We all loved the "crab" rangoon (pictured), fish tacos, steak frites, calamari and pork banh mi. Hidden Harbor is worth a visit just for dinner, even if you're not planning on drinking. While the food, drinks and atmosphere were all terrific, the best thing about HH was the people. Everyone, from Em at the door, to Chris, Ariel and Andrea at the bar, to Charlie and Julia at the table, was incredibly welcoming, friendly, helpful and professional. Adam Henry, one of the co-owners, also stopped by the table to say hello, and a couple of minutes speaking with Adam made it clear why the staff are so fabulous - he's a people person. We recently had guests in from out of town who are very knowledgeable in Tiki drinks, history, culture, etc. They had heard of Hidden Harbor before and were very excited to be visiting and able to try it out. I would recommend making a reservation, as their indoor dining area is fairly small. The online reservation process is simple but you are required to put down $40 in advance. This comes off your bill, but is still something to be prepared for. They are also only allowing fully covid-vaccinated people in their indoor dining, which was a huge positive for us. Between our group we tried almost every one of the drinks from the "Tiki" portion of the menu and they were all met with rave reviews-including the non-alcoholic cocktail which was a huge plus for us and meant our designated driver (who doesn't drink anyway) felt fully included! I can't speak to the authenticity of the drinks, but our guests vouched for them and they were certainly delicious and wonderfully ornamented. I was also pleasantly surprised by the food! They have a decent share of vegetarian/pescatarian options which is a huge plus for us. The "crab" rangoons, calamari, fish tacos, tofu bahn mi, and summer salad all were delicious. Especially the summer salad. I mean, wow. I'll be thinking about that one for a while. I can't wait to replicate it at home (although I doubt it'll be quite the same.) Such a fun place! The atmosphere and vibe transported us out of a 15 degree evening in Pittsburgh. We were excitedly surprised to be greeted at the bar by our old friend and one of Pittsburgh's best bartenders Chris Miller. The rest of the staff was super friendly. An added bonus, having to show proof of vaccination and booster for inside dining. It makes for a very comfortable and relaxing experience knowing everyone around you is doing everything they can to stay safe. We enjoyed meeting a family from Columbus seated at the bar next to us who were checking out area tiki bars The Crab Rangoon was tasty. I went to Hidden Harbor the other day for my daughter in-laws birthday. I had never been there before and to be honest I am not much of a drinker. we called ahead and reserved a table for 6. we where seated immediately and a waitress came over immediately. I had the trader vicks mai tai. The drink was ok not much to speak about and definetly nothing special , About 3/4 of the glass was ice. I found the service to be excellent and the decor and theme was nice. First negative was I was expecting the place to be cool and to sit in a nice relaxing temperature. Instead it was really hot and not comfortable at all. second negative the drinks are small in size and way to much ice especially for the cost of the drinks which are any where from 12-16 dollars each. 3rd negative food selection extremely limited and for me nothing I would want to eat. Although they say they will make anything as it is a bar obviously the selection of standard specialty drinks are very limited. I am being generous in saying they deserve no more than 2 stars and that is only because the service was so good otherwise I would have given them one star. As a very limited drinker and someone who is happy drinking a beer I can not recommend Hidden Harbor as to me it was way over priced and not to my liking. If you want a fancy expensive drink with mostly ice and a very limited menu then Hidden Harbor is for you. read more

I love going to Hidden Harbor! It is really good option if you have food allergies (gluten and dairy free here). The waiter was able to go over things with me as well as discuss the drinks. Visited Hidden Harbor for the House of Tabu Exotica Moderne issue 5 release party. We arrived at 5pm when they opened, met the magazine gang, then immediately got the last two seats at the bar, as the place filled up quickly. The bartenders are knowledgeable, make great cocktails and the place uses top notch fresh ingredients, fresh juices and beautiful garnishes. Super disappointed the place did not have tiki mugs for sale, but there was a small selection of glassware. We ordered three appetizers that were all fair but unimpressive. We had fun, not because of the staff - who were accommodating but not especially friendly, but because of the tiki people regulars that were visiting and chatty. Located right on Shady Avenue in Squirrel Hill, you'll find a cozy tiki lover's dream. With an island ambiance and tropic-cool music, you'll feel like you're on a mini vacation. The drinks are delicious--not too strong and not too sweet. They're just enough to take the edge off of a long week. We've had the mai tai, daiquiri and eastern sour from the happy hour menu along with a Freddy Fugu to share. Another reviewer mentioned an issue with ice, and I wanted to offer clarification. Many of the cocktails are served in a glass of chewable style ice (think pellets). Daiquiris are served in a smaller glass with no ice. Drinks are a little steep outside of happy hour, admittedly, but for $5-$6 during those magic hours, a cold and refreshing cocktail will be mai fine. As far as food goes, we tried the Jamaican jerk wings. They were a bit on the salty side, and while wings, but they were still tasty. Four whole wings for $6. Sorry for the puns.
