Went out this afternoon. Great trip! The guide was great, made the whole ride into a story! Beautiful ride through the battlefields. If I could change anything, the rear trail guide was a little dramatic and was not happy with Levi the horse. Each time she yelled out, I would get lost in the story and would loose at least 5 minutes trying to catch up. May have just been she was having an off day, so I think only fair to rate how I felt overall about the ride. read more

We had an incredible horse back tour of Gettysburg this afternoon with great horses, expert wranglers and a very informative tour guide. We are novice horse riders, and this tour was easy to ride. It provided great access to the trails inside the park, not accessible by car or bus. The view from horse back helped us envision the view from back in July 1863. The horses were very well cared for, and the staff were very attentive to our safety, and abilities. They kept beginners like us moving well throughout the tour. The tour guide provided such a wealth of information about the area and the battle. His talk was easy to listen too and kept in sync with where we were riding. On June 30, 2022 my daughter and I had the pleasure to ride for the 4th time with Hickory Hollow Farm. As always, we had the best ride! All the horses were perfectly behaved, but I'm partial to my Sunny-boy! Mary was our official Battlefield Tour Guide and showed us so many parts of the battlefield, both Union and Confederate lines, and my favorite.....many parts of the geography and the role it played in the battle. Hickory Hollow takes the best care of their horses! Every horse was well-protected from the flies biting their faces and the nasty horse flies biting their rumps! Our horses were comfortable on a hot day and we rode a lot times in the shade. I can't wait to come back! And don't forget to tip your tour guide! read more

We really enjoyed the 2 hour battlefield tour. Family of 4, with an 11 and 16 yo. The wranglers seemed VERY conscientious of inexperienced riders, making sure we felt comfortable. They even had backup batteries for our receivers, when there was a problem. The guide gave just enough information to be very interesting. We did the Gettysburg tour and it was amazing! First the staff takes very good care of the horses. The staff was super friendly and helpful! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Some people in our group were complaining about the horses stopping or doing this and that! Before you do this tour keep in mind these are animals! They are very well behaved but just like humans they can be having an off day. I thought all the horses did really well. Listen to the rules and how to handle the horses and you will be fine! We've gone on several horseback tours in Gettysburg, but none as wonderful as our experience with Hickory Hollow. The ladies are so kind and accommodating. They have all of your basic needs covered, including saddle bags to hold your water, phone, etc. They accompany the group on the tour in case anyone has concerns while riding or needs advice on how to direct their horse. What we loved most was that the farm uses ear pieces and receivers for each rider, so that you can listen to the tour guide through a headphone in your ear. Many tour companies don't provide this, and as a result it becomes extremely difficult to hear the guide. Additionally, it requires stops to be made along the trail. With the ear piece, we could hear every word and made it further across the battlefield than on any previous tour. We loved our tour with Hickory Hollow and will use them from now on!! read more

The certified battlefield guide was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, and did a great job of answering questions and telling interesting stories and facts about the battle. Horseback tours in principle are a great way to see the battlefield. A few of the horse wranglers were very abrupt, bordering on rude, and did a very poor job of managing the group. Most of the horses did not seem well-trained enough to be ridden by people with no experience. For a trip like this, I think the expectation is that the horses are docile and don't need a lot of input from the rider -- they just follow the tail in front of them. However, each of the horses on this tour had to be sorted into small groups because there were so many personality (horsenality?) conflicts. I'm a semi-experienced rider, so I was comfortable reining in my horse when he would get too close to another horse, but most of the people on my tour had little or no experience, and seemed scared and uncomfortable with the horse's testing behaviors, like kicking, biting, or rearing up. There was a young kid behind me (maybe 9 or 10) who clearly was terrified. The woman leading the tour kept stopping or slowing down every few hundred feet, which would make all the horses in line bump into each other, and the ones who "didn't get along" would inevitably challenge each other. The tour guides would then correct the riders as if they had done something wrong. I mean, maybe we did, but again -- the people doing these rides are novices, so what do you expect? It was difficult to pay attention to the scenery or the tour guide, because you have to spend most of your time correcting your horse and worrying about the traffic jams that the pack leader kept creating. I enjoyed the tour overall, but I would not go through this company again. read more

This was a very cool way to see Gettysburg and hear the history of the battlefields. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable, and never missed a beat the entire tour. It was also nice that we stopped half way through the tour to take pictures to commemorate the ride. The only downfall was the wranglers yelling at the horses and riders throughout the trip. A few times the guide had to stop talking so we could hear them. I understand riding is a liability and they have our best safety in interest, but several times, it seemed a little unnecessary and distracting. That being said, this was, overall, an awesome trip, and I would really recommend a horseback tour over a walking or segway tour any day! read more

We had a fantastic battlefield ride here. The trail boss (Pam) knew every horse like her own children, and knew how to handle us greenhorns as well. On this particular two-hour trek, we had myself, my 9-year old son, and my dad (who was by far the experienced rider of our little band). Pam made sure we all had appropriate horses and knew their quirks, and off we went. This particular ride took us across the battlefield from the Southern lines up toward the Northern lines. One thing you just don't notice from a car is how much of an affect the terrain would have on the battle itself. Horseback provides a unique perspective - try it. Make sure you get a tour with a licensed battlefield guide - they know EVERYTHING about the park and will give you a far better experience than trying to Google everything on your expensive and droppable phone while bouncing along on a giant animal. A couple of hints from a novice rider: - Two hours is a fairly long ride, especially for unconditioned city slickers - bring water! - Make sure you have a camera with a wrist strap, and that you use it. - Horse pee splashes. What an amazing way to tour the battlefield! Our family really enjoyed our riding experience, as well as the staff who rode with us. Pam was super nice and called the day before to make sure we knew exactly where we were going. Upon arrival she matched all 6 of us to specific horses. They all had such unique personalities, and the staff guided us all along the way on how to "steer" them if they moved out of the line at all. We were totally comfortable the entire time, and loved how well behaved the horses were. It is evident that they're well taken care of, and that they love their job! I rode Gracie who was a sweetheart, and my husband rode Nikki who was a little sassy, but so funny!! They made the ride so entertaining. Just concluded a wonderful trail ride yesterday and would highly recommend. I had called Pam a few months prior. Great communication. We arranged for our party of 8 to ride the 1;30-3:30. They assigned us horses and we rode along with our guide, Jim, who provided us with a personal and knowledgeable history of what occurred in the areas in which we rode. Yesterday my son and I took the 2 hour battlefield tour and have nothing but the most positive feedback. First, the entire affair from booking through mounting the horses was extremely well organized and well managed - right down to a reminder text about key aspects of the tour, the day before the ride. Next - well the horses - they were incredible. Well behaved, sweet natured, and interactive with their riders (I rode Gracie and my son rode Spirit). The trail was amazing - areas that you never would see and experience from walking or driving. It was two hours of full immersion in what occurred during the battle, the strategy that went into both armies maneuvers and actions, and the local farms that were caught in the middle. Perfect. Horses ready at 9am. Greeted and were able to meet horses while they were groomed. No problems with any horse behavior at all...14 riders so that was unexpected. It was nice and the scenery was very nice. Pam was very personable and nice. No one really said anything that we could hear during the ride, so for us it was a pretty ride with no narrative (if there was one). There is nothing more than a walk, no trotting, fast walk or gallop. Being that we've ridden before, we would have liked a little more. The age difference is too big though, because as some places have an age limit, this one does not, nor does it matter how much experience these young folks didn't have (which was none). Also, our group was supposed to leave on the hour, and this group didn't even show up until 2 minutes after. Guess what, now you have to sit on your horse waiting for 4 people to get a horse and do paper work. How completely rude. When this happens they should be made to pay and if there's room in the next group great, if not, too bad. You don't inconvenience a business and all the people. So rude. Luckily Pam started the hour count after they were saddled up and let them ride (she's nicer than me, lol). Almost exactly an hour. Recommend. Nice people and horses, nice scenery. read more
