Its English name comes from a Greek legend: Zeus had an affair with a beautiful woman named Io. When Hera, his wife, discovered his infidelity, she turned Io into a cow and created a horsefly to sting her on the rump. Io jumped clear across the strait. Thus, "bous" = "cow" and "poros" = "crossing place": Bosphorus = "crossing place of the cow." Located off of busy Franklin Avenue in Nutley, my partner, our friends, and I have decided on our dinner at this family-owned-and-run BYOB establishment, which has been open since 1995. A reservation was made for a party of 4 by calling their restaurant. Upon arrival after three years, we were welcomed by Nora, the owner, and made our way to a table by the piano inside, evoking a cozy, thoughtfully designed, upscale vibe with music playing softly. Their menu features Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine. For starters, we decided on the Puffed Rill Pastry and Grape Leaves. Our main meal consisted of all lamb dishes (Lamb Shish Kebab, Beyti Kebab, Lamb Chops, and Lamb Sauté). Our food was fresh, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection, accompanied by a beautifully presented dish. Everything was authentically made with love here. Wish we could have stayed for dessert, as they looked amazing, but some of us were in a rush. It's definitely on the higher end cost but worth the taste. Our visit ended with a hug and a piece of candy.

Taverna Veranda attracts cool, chill folks who enjoy good music, company, and food. And you can come alone and be treated with dignity by both patrons and staff. It is that kind of environment. No cheap elitism, no wannabes. I came on a Friday night to enjoy their seafood special and the DJ. If you want to carry a conversation, maybe avoid Friday nights. If you wanna dance then Friday night is good. DJ spins a selection of high beat Arabic music that will get you moving for sure. I had the pink snapper, which was huge and is meant to be shared among three people. It comes with two choices of sides and i recommend the spicy broccoli and spicy fries. For mezze you must try the babaganoush. It comes with pomegranate seeds and fresh chopped cherry tomatoes, for a mildly tart and sweet nuance. It comes with pita bread roasted with rosemary. Kefte is another winner; bite size meatballs with tzatsiki sauce. But something you rarely see in ordinary middle Eastern restaurants is the saganaki. You must order it. Especially if you are having a stiff drink...it will help soak up that 40% proof alcohol. The cheese was gooey melty perfection, sizzling hot with lemon wedge on top. You have the sweet tardiness of the lemon combined with the saltiness of the cheese. Speaking of stiff drinks, the señorita is strong and well made. If you had a particularly rough week, you will appreciate the bartender. The glass is large, with about 1.7 Oz of Don Julio 1942 añejo. The view is lovely. I was sitting inside as it was a warm summer night. But as the weather cools and the mosquitos leave, I want to chill on the terrace, at brunch.

We didn't have a reservation but they had a high top table available so got seated right away. Service was friendly and professional. We ordered the swordfish and the skirt steak which both were pretty good. A touch on the pricey side for both dishes but we can say we enjoyed the flavors. Cute restaurant with good ambiance that's good for both an intimate dinner or even a nice night out with a group.

The ambiance fit the name perfectly -- subtle hints of blue throughout that tied right back to "d'Azur." We started with a glass of bubbly and focaccia served with three spreads -- the olive tapenade stood out over the butter. For the first course, I had the duck confit salad -- the duck portion itself ran a little light, but the flavor balance was excellent: sweetness from the strawberries, bitterness from the arugula, saltiness from the goat cheese, and umami depth from the duck confit. It's BYOB, we brought both red and white wine to pair across the meal. The table shared the Branzino with French chard, which was outstanding, and the steak frites, which was exceptional and perfect medium rare. I had the duck breast with mushroom, paired with a Pinot Noir -- a great match, and that same Pinot Noir worked beautifully with the steak too. To finish, we shared three desserts: crème brûlée, chocolate truffles with strawberry and pistachio, and a cognac cake topped with a chocolate whipped mousse, walnuts, and strawberry. Tough call on a favorite, but the cognac cake stole the show. Throughout dessert, the staff kept checking in without ever feeling intrusive -- a small thing, but it stood out. A great night out with drink, food, and cousins from start to finish. The service alone is worth going back for. Highly recommend.

The sea bass my wife and SIL were again, beautifully prepared and delicious as always, as were my lamb chops (Kuzu). The pan seared calamari was naked which is more healthy than fried! The miso aioli made the big difference with the squid! It was different and delicious. The squid was tender and not chewy! For dinner I ordered the beef shish kebab. It came with two kebab. The beef tasted delicious with the Turkish style marinade. I think it would have been more worth if they added another kebab stick. The pistachio rice was good. It was a different taste with nice almonds slices. The only negative were the kebabs and rice were cold like the onion salad. And I loved the onion salad. We also ordered the salmon artichoke. The pan seared salmon was over cooked. They should have seared it in a shorter time. And it lacked seasoning believe it or not! The artichoke Brussels were a little on the burnt side. The spicy tomato sauce tasted more like ketchup. We will not be ordering this in the future. We also ordered a side of fries and Tahini brussels. The fries weee very tasty and I savored every piece. The Brussels were tasty as well. For dessert, we ordered rice pudding and baklavas. Both weee very good.
