No pressure, plenty of time to "test drive" several options, and experienced advice. Add to it a top-notch delivery and set-up service. I've been buying audio equipment lately. I've wanted to stop in at this place for awhile because they have some cool gear. I happened to be driving by so I stopped. I wanted to browse and also ask a quick question about a new Arcam amp I bought (elsewhere). As soon as I said I had a question the owner or sales guy asked where I bought it. After I told him he abruptly said "why don't you ask them?" My reply was I thought you might be friendly and walked out. I'm in the customer service business and was pretty offended at his rudeness. Guess he's got all the customers he needs. Can't recommend this place if courtesy and integrity are important to you. And why wouldn't it be? read more

I had two vintage pieces of equipment repaired and restored here. Very fair prices and very good work. Their expert technician totally remade a favorite old turntable and took the time to explain why it was so special as well as why it was so intricate. They then did preventative work on a classic amp, likely saving the results of 40 year old internal components failing. I trust their work and their recommendations. read more

I think it is important for women to know that this is a place you can shop for products that are usually associated with 'more knowledgeable men'. The ladies know what I'm talking about. They treat you respectfully. They don't manslpain. They don't act like it is a burden to work with you, or like you're a 'clueless chick' that can be upsold at a higher price than a man. I was going to purchase a McIntosh MX110 that had been for sale there forever. The salesman told me it had been tested and everything worked. We agreed on a price and I said I'd be in to pick it up. Then I get a call saying it has a long list of problems and now needs $500 to $800 worth of repairs. This is a very dishonest place. I would discourage you from doing business here. read more

This is the best hifi shop I've patronized, and I've been to many in the past decades. The staff was very helpful. It's a high-end shop, but when I told them my budget--which was very low, by their standards--they found the perfect solution at that price range. Most impressive: A technician came to my home to hook everything up and ensure that the new component and system as a whole were working properly. I have no doubt that their service technicians are knowledgeable, but be sure to call ahead to see if they work on your equipment. If they don't, you'll waste a trip and the technician will dismiss you in a very arrogant way. read more

Joe is one top notch installer. I've worked with him twice. The second time he pushed through installing my A/V receiver, TV and surround sound system along with a second system dedicated to audio all in a very short time frame. He thought it was going to have to take two trips to me to get it done because it was a big job and he was booked pretty solid that day but he got it all done that afternoon. He is honorable and humble. They have a nice selection of new and used equipment to build anything you need. Never pushy in their sales. They are patient and let you make your own decisions. They won't waste any time answering your questions. Direct and to the point. Definitely worth a look see. read more

This store is no longer at Harmon Place (as this page indicates as of this review). You know, I discovered this store a number of years ago before I lived in the Twin Cities area. It was great to walk in to see somewhat exotic stereo equipment. And that the staff is somewhat friendly is a big plus. Unfortunately this store like one of its competitors in Richfield MN, has a staff that has a collective tin ear. Fortunately for HIFi sound, their tin ear doesn't allow them to insult your music, but you can tell by the low fidelity recordings that they play when you walk in, their taste in music is limited by their love of the sound of electronics. Never the less, they do have some worthy equipment competently setup in listenable situations that demonstrate the capabilities of the equipment to be set up as you would like to hear it, and not just in the way they want to hear it. The last time I was in, they also had a service department. This is somewhat unusual in these days of throw away equipment. Unfortunately when I gave them my 1987 model CD player (that still sounds better than most new CD players), they charged me $40 to 'fix' it. I wish I had marked the parts, because when I got it back home, it had the same problem as before (supposedly they sent it to an authorized dealer repair place and had the transport replaced,,but $40 sounded too inexpensive for that, so I think they just stole $40 from me). So here's my plan for you: Go there, listen to their equipment, discover what you like, and then go home and find it on the internet for 2/3 the price. read more
