You never know what you'll find in a random neighborhood. In my case last Saturday, I was at the Speedway filling my rental car, when I spied Know Name Records across the street. As I had plenty of time to spare for Lunch with my brother (at the nearby 5-8 Club), I wandered over. Know Name Records struck me as a combination of a CD/Vinyl records store, a head shop, t-shirt seller, memorabilia collection, head shop, disk golf dealer, and rummage sale. The later was based on a couple sets of old speakers, a turntable, and other vintage items that were for sale. Plus from this person of 65's perspective, it didn't look like the 2 older guys tending the counter had escaped the 60s. :) I had a great time looking around. I wasn't much interested in the weed-related or vinyl merchandise, and I would never get those speakers on the plane. But, the CDs were interesting and I found a great Vikings/Prince "Purple Reign" (if only for that NFL team) jersey that I just had to take home (see picture). I'm sure to come back the next time I'm anywhere this side of the Crosstown Freeway. Plus I'd fully expect that there would be a whole new inventory to explore. Good prices too. read more

I was in town visiting my brother's family for Christmas, and I stopped by Know Name Records to buy some records and what not for Christmas presents. Great place! They had some cool stuff as always. This may be the worst shop I've ever walked into. The first thing you see when you pull Into the parking lot is a sign that the you'll be towed if you don't shop there. As if the barber shop next door is taking all their spots? Then it goes downhill. Beat up vinyl at insane prices. A sorry headship and beat up audio equipment make up most of the inventory. The "staff" ignored everybody that walked in, which was a blessing I guess judging by the conversation I could hear over the awful prog they were playing. This is a great record shop. The staff seems to be stoned much of the time, which is okay because it's also a head shoppe. No biggie there. Most of their used vinyl and CDs are reasonably priced, except for some rugged looking records. They were probably priced by someone behind the counter who was high. Just getting back into vinyl and wanting to do so with good quality used albums...I hit the jackpot at Know Name Records (60's, 70's, 80's Rock). Foghat, Loverboy, Simon & Garfunkel, Jim Groce, April Wine, Def Leppard, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Prince. All were $3-$20 (Prince was $20, all others under $13 or less). One of the better record, disc golf and head shops in town. They have a nice selection of new and used vinyl. I always find something I don't have while browsing their records. Know name also has a variety of other types of music media and memorabilia. They even have a pin ball machine. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about all the products they have on offer which is helpful if you're new to disc golf or all things heady. I love the used DVD selection. I usually buy 4 DVD`s a month. They run from 1-5 dollars, sometimes more, if it is a double DVD or rare. In addition, I sometimes find vintage rock memorabilia-like one that sticks out in my mind, I saw a 3X4 foot silk like flag. It is black with the Led Zeppelin logo and the Swan Song Pegasus logo. Very detailed and nostalgic. It is displayed in the store. I asked if they had any more. I am very glad I asked and one of the owners went in back-into an old file cabinet. There sat one new in a sealed bag. The old stock new product-had the old 9.99 price tag on it from decades ago. It was sold to me for that price. I have it hanging from a shelf of rare collectibles. The people in the know are blown away. I can not find anything even close, new or used anywhere. This incident is not osolated.. It is cheaper to buy a DVD from them than rent or buy as I see this on Amazon & Amazon prime. This store is a true treasure. I feel like I am back home in Los Angeles, in a time machine back in the 60-70`s. read more

Some of these reviewers may not know what they are talking about, this shop is a one stop shop for hard to find music, gifts and a good place to kill some time. I was able to find a Motorhead picture disc that I would not have been able to find at some other places around town. Know Name caters to those of us who are looking for stuff that may not be as popular now as it once was. It's great reliving some nostalgia of the arcade, since most of them are now defunct, it's nice to find some music, play a few games of pinball and find a new pipe to enjoy for the evening. The staff that I've spoken to don't believe in harassing the customer's (it's an old school mentality thing), but are great and knowledgeable if you have any questions they generally are able to answer them. read more

This shop stocks soo many records you don't want. If you ever wondered what happened to your copy of Lionel Richie's "Dancing On The Ceiling" that you lost back in '88. Know Name has it and I'm sure they will sell it right back to you. Along with copious amounts of paraphernalia. Finding new releases of any sort of note is a crap shoot. read more

I don't know what all the negative reviews are about, because this is a real head shop that sells records and Cd's. The music selection is fair, and they have the largest selection of smoking supplies in town. They even have glass steamrollers designed for smoking a joint, which is kind of neat. Their paper selection is the largest you will find, and they have the Club ungummed ones too! As with any record store, the music selection varies. Even Treehouse or Roadrunner don't always have what I'm looking for, so it's hit or miss. For those of us who don't own a record player or download music, many of us still like the quality sound from a CD, and this place along with Electric Fetus carry Cd's. There is one in particular, who may be an owner because they have been there for so long, but this blonde woman is kind of judgey and rude. Not really what people are looking for in a place like this. Maybe time to delegate somebody else to do the customer service work. The other staff have not been a problem at all. Been a customer there for decades. Their smoking selection is second to NONE. The glassware is everywhere from simple and elegant to obscure and awesome. If you are looking for music, this is the place to go. If they don't have it, they will find it. All you have to do is ask. If you want to expand your horizon on a certain genre, talk to them and they can suggest many different bands for your listening pleasure. read more

I'm not sure how this store keeps the lights on as a "record store". It has the smallest new LP section I've seen in any record store in Minneapolis, and each record was priced $3-$4 higher than I have seen at other stores in the area. (I noticed they have the strongest selection of Megadeath in the Twin Cities, though. Stop in here if that is your gig.) After the 10 seconds it took to flip through the new LPs, I was hoping to find a gem in the proverbial haystack of used and recent arrivals, but quickly realized I was flipping through records priced at $4.95 and up that I could easily find in the $1-$2 sections in other stores, and easily in better shape. Everything in the bins had a worn feel to the covers. The nail in the coffin for me was the Quadrophonic bin near the counter where I found records that may have been rare, but in very poor condition, priced as I would expect if they were actually near mint. Overall, a pretty disappointing store that I will not visit again. There are at least 10 other record stores scattered in Minneapolis and Saint Paul that I would visit before coming back here. read more

While the in store Music selection isn't what it once was (due to downloading) they will order you what ever you want. They have a great selection of incense and other accessories. I bought a water pipe here just the other day. When I got home the bowl piece cracked during the first use. I was pretty upset and called to see if they had replacement pieces that I could buy. The next day I showed up to purchase a new one and the guy not only compensated the piece but upgraded me to a nicer thicker glass. u know in the 80's i began to frequently shop in this little hidden in the corner (destination location) head / record shop ... as the years have passed & sales i am sure on the decline as with all (nearly 98% of all others) shops have closed ~ this is a survivor & with good reason ~ much like being a stranger at a keg bash & walking in estranged your met with the friendly (hey & thank u for coming) treated like a buyer with 100$ to spend (be it a 5$ purchase or an amassed lucky find of mucho cd's ~ lp's ~ dvd's ~ vhs tapes ~ cassettes (yes i said cassettes) even a few 8-track tapes (dam does it get more adventurous to pick (and i am a picker) 100$ too spend has come my way many a time (here) unlike the walmart feeling chepo's where dancing on the ceiling is 4$ here it's a buck ! if you like me seek the micro pressed " who the hell are these guys bands " & the latest metal / hard rockers from europe (again likely unheard of) then the adventure of discovery is here at (know name) & i love no name bands ... just the same if a retro (beyond friendly) shopping in the quiet with often the best music overhead is where you seek a few hours to escape (it's more than a fun little shop) it's hard not to find something that you just can't leave without ~ & at garage sale prices that is open everyday ... if its to sell your collection or add to it this is where fair & kind treatment is the reason they are still in this corner of portland ave right off the crosstown freeway still today ! unlike the many others whom have failed to survive the internet age ... metaldad a mpls, mn resident & always made to feel welcomed customer ... read more
