What a quirky slice of heaven this bookstore is, truly a fanboys dream. having a wide variety of books of all genres in stock as well as a rom of memorabilia concerning such classics as Universal Monsters, Godzilla and others, walking in here give a you all the right "feels". the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the store is the right amount of organized without losing the treasure hunters sense of discovery and it smells like literature. this is a regular stop every time I am in town. It's a perfect blend of a comic book store and a science fiction bookstore. They have an impressive selection of both old comics and old books. I think the first thing I said when I walked into Dream Haven was "Oh my god, I wish I lived here!" I'm not sure though because I was speaking in tongues - this place brought it out of me. Seriously, this is a destination book store if ever there was one! I love this place and can't wait for another opportunity to visit Minneapolis for Dream Haven. I had a long layover in Minneapolis and being addicted to midwestern comic book stores decided I would venture into the city rather than fester in the airport. I was pleased to find public transit easy and efficient and delighted to be greeted by Halloween decorations all over the city. Then I got to Dream Haven, which I first saw from the angle of a beautiful mural they recently commissioned from the son of illustrator Vaughn Bode - wish I'd taken any pictures... I didn't know anything about this store before I got there, but their window display also seemed promising, decked out with a lovely seasonal exhibit. Upon entry to the store I realized that the window was no mere seasonal exhibit, but a way of life! This place is like a living museum of sci fi and horror... nay, it is a temple of the weird and beautiful. If you are a horror and sci fi fan make sure you have lots of money to spend - you will spend it all and happily. P.s. make a t-shirt :) read more

I love this store and its awesome staff. Were it not for Dreamhaven, my comic collection would be small and boring.

First note: THIS STORE IS NOT CLOSED (as of August, 2012). And it is indeed open to the public (despite what one reviewer wrote, per the owner, he is not "really" closed: http://dreamhaven.livejournal.com/128653.html). The hours are much more irregular than they used to be, though - check the website to ensure it'll be open when you go. He keeps it very up-to-date with open days and hours. Now, the review: This may be my favorite bookstore in America. (plus, it's right down the street from a great BBQ joint - extra points!) Now, that said, it's the best bookstore for a specific genre: that genre is "anything any kind of geek might enjoy at all." Not just hardcore nerds, I mean anyone who has ever enjoyed any kind of fantasy or sci-fi thing EVER - if you liked one of the Lord of the Rings movies, this is for you. If you remember Star Wars fondly from your youth, this is for you. It covers every possible iteration of anything remotely fabulist - from goth to faeries to steampunk and traditional sci-fi and fantasy. There are even plenty of children's books. Other things to note: - They carry things nobody else ever does. Small press runs, chapbooks, and unusual and unique pieces by authors you love. You'll find things by those authors here that you never knew existed. - There must be some sort of organization to this store, but it is beyond my capacity to grasp. Oh, I could tell that there was a section for newer stuff, and one for older stuff, and a comics aisle, etc., but it's mostly just a gigantic jumble of awesomeness that you wander through, wide-eyed. I'll bet the proprietor knows where every single thing is, though. - It is, hands-down, the best of it's genre, and is curated and run by a man who seems to have deep connections to the industry and a great knowledge of his chosen field. He personally knows all the important authors in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, and a great many outside of it as well. - I had been worried that this bookstore, would not be long for this world. The owner apparently makes most of his $$ through mail order, the internet, and conventions, so as store sales decline, at some point he had said he might close it. But I just asked him last weekend (August 2012), and he said that he has no plans to close the store. So enjoy!! read more
