This was my first and last time I'll order from this shoppe. I recently bought an Aria PE-180 archtop guitar from Twin Town Guitars. The guitar is from the 70s and often an instrument of that vintage requires major repairs. I reached out to them about the guitar and received a reply from Kris Johnson in the service department. We spoke on the phone and emailed four times. He was nice enough to answer any questions I had. He had gone through the guitar; replaced the truss rod, re-fretted it and had it plekked. Well, I thought about the guitar for a couple of weeks and finally made the long distance purchase after speaking to Kris one last time. I must tell you that he did an amazing job on this guitar! I am a long time jazz guitarist so I play all over the neck and can find problems with a guitar immediately. This guitar plays amazingly well! What a beautiful old guitar it is after he brought it back to life. This has been the best guitar purchasing experience I have ever had! I bought a Squier P-Bass for my 12 year old here last fall. When we were purchasing the instrument, right out of the box the action seemed really high, but I don't know much about basses and figured this is a good shop, right? So time goes by and my kid's instructor tells me that it really needs to be adjusted, so I take it back in in early March. I get a call a couple days later saying the neck is so warped that is needs to be steam pressed. I was told that a replacement neck is out of the question and that they don't even make them and kind of treated like a chump. So it goes to the steam press guy, who is not in-house. After a week, I call to try and see what was going on (this later becomes a pattern), I talk to the steam press guy who says that it can't be done and that it's going back. Two weeks after this I call again, trying to figure out what is going on after no communication at all from Twin Town, and talk to the head of service. Once he understands that I had just purchased this thing, he says that it is a full warranty replacement. OK, great. So that gets underway. Two weeks after this, I call yet again, trying to understand what is going on, and I'm told that it had actually shipped two days after our prior converstaion and that it's in the building, meaning that they had just been letting it sit there for close to two weeks. Super weak. I'm really pleased that the instrument was (eventually) replaced, but geez, y'all. I despise writing stuff like this, but during this enitre situation there was zero communication aside from one phone call where i was low key treated like an idiot, and then pure laziness and zero hustle from literally anyone else. I came here because I'm trying to not go to corporate stores and keep it local, but why should I ever come back? read more

Sent 2 separate inquiries via their website on a fairly expensive product. No response. So, I decided to order the product online since it was an awesome deal. The order was canceled the next day, with no reason given. So, of course I called to find out why the order was canceled. I was told that the product was no longer in stock, however another similar product was, but they needed to research it. I asked if they would like to call or email me back, and they said they would call. Still no response, 4 days. I'm sure it's an awesome store face to face, but communication really needs to improve if you're going to sell stuff online. Just some constructive feedback. read more

Twin Town is a preferred stop for myself when it comes to gear. I always swing through to see what they might get in. I have gotten lucky with some sweet deals over the years. They have a great selection of guitars and amplifiers, and by far the BEST selection for FX pedals. REPAIRS: I initially had an unfair review after having some work done for my amplifier. I did not know there was warranty on the work completed. After writing my review, Kris reached out to me to resolve the problem and prove his loyalty to customers. I was really moved by this. That to me, means the world, that he took the time out of his schedule to see that I was satisfied and that the repair met my expectations. This is top notch service. This is a great Guitar/music shop. With lots of boutique pedals, great guitars, and last time I was there... a beautiful farfisa organ! These guys are legends for fixing stuff. Even though they were in the middle of saving someones day while I was there, they made sure I was being help and let me know if I needed anything to let them know! Super nice. If you like being ignored by every employee in the store when you really want to ask a question, and sifting through a whole bunch of mediocre gear to possibly find something good but probably not, give Twin Town a try. I realize that working at a guitar shop in Minneapolis automatically makes you way more hip, cool and knowledgeable then everyone else, but if I'm standing there staring at you, asking you about a guitar behind the counter, please, put down your cheeseburger and do your job. (this really happened to me) Now I will say that Twin Town used to be very impressive, but, in the last year I've gone in their several times and their selection of worth while equipment has dwindled to almost nothing. Like I said, If you go in enough and look hard you might find something good, and probably for a decent price, but it would be a very rare occasion. This would all be ok if your a mom shopping for your son's first guitar and want to find a good deal on a cheap used guitar, but on top of it the service is incredibly lousy. I realize that musicians are not the most friendly and polite and responsible people, but everybody else has to put a fake smile on for their jobs and blow smoke up somebodies ass, why do these guys think their exempt? Overall I'm pretty disappointed with the turn that Twin Town has taken. I usually expect to encounter a few elitist guitar snobs at most local shops but if there's always some sweet gear there, I deal with it. Unfortunately, your lucky if you find anything really worth your while there now. read more

This is a pretty good example of how to run a biz. There have been guitars being sold out of this store for years, but since the current crew took over - over a decade ago - they have slowly built it into a growing music store with really good selection of new and select (meaning no junk) used stuff. You could go to the larger corporate music store, find the prices good and then that they are NOT including the case, and you will have to pay extra and they don't know crap about setting up the instrument, etc. Or you could go here and get a new warranty included guitar or bass or amp from the same top notch makers, excellent customer service, excellent repair and a BETTER selection of effects, amps, supplies, etc. And you get a good music lesson program that rivals Schmitt. These guys also are an underground railroad of sorts to really amazing electronics repair. That includes vintage amps and PA's, and also vintage hifi too. So, why don't I rate it a 5 star? It is unfair but my 5 star level comparisons are shops that existed 30 years ago on either coast. So they are really good, exceptional for the Twin Cities. Do they have the stunning vintage selection of Willie's? No, but I would rather buy vintage gear here to be truthful. It would be cheaper for sure. So, they aren't Willie's. But Willie's ain't Pete's by a mile. Do they have the working musician's selection of beater grade stuff like Encore? Not at all, but they are peacefully and pleasantly dividing those ends of the market, and a kid's mother would be more comfortable opening the check book, and just being, in here. No sweat. This is a nice old school mom and pop type music store with good prices, good selection, decent service, and nobody gets screwed over here. Worth your visit and business. read more

Been going here for years. I don't know how many times Kris or Andrew saved my ass when I was coming home from a long tour with busted up gear and a big hometown show to play. I've heard many heroic tales from touring bands about how these guys fixed stuff and hand-delivered it to the venue in time for the show. Sometimes people will dog on the place a little bit because there are some new kids working here now and they don't always know you on a first-name basis. Well, give them some time, they will. They're working under guys who've been in the business a long time and know how to take care of clientele. People will sometimes crab if the inventory isn't to their liking on a particular day: that's just how the vintage/used gear trade goes, sometimes. You can't just call some random phone number and order a pallet of 1960s Marshall and Hi-Watt stuff because some grizzled dudes want to browse. Sometimes the inventory is killer, sometimes it's okay. There are always a lot of cool pedals here, and this shop supports a lot of boutique and local companies. I also know a couple of the music instructors and they are in love with their job. One drum teacher, in particular, has even come up with a method of teaching a 4-year-old how to play drums using color patterns (!) instead of just taking the parents' money and going, "here, try to hit the drum kid." Of course, conventional methods are taught, but the staff are willing to get creative to bring out the best in the students. This is a great shop if you can afford to spent several hundred dollars on an instrument. As a beginner on a budget, I didn't want to make an investment in a hobby that I didn't know I would stick with. So if you're a novice or a parent looking for an instrument for your child, I would recommend exploring other options (there are lots of them in the cities). I come to Twin Town for accessories like picks and strings (they sell singles!). If my guitar needed repair beyond my capabilities, I would consider bringing it here. read more

They also have an incredibly knowledgeable staff that are on hand to assist with any and all inquiries you may have. One qualm I have is that no chicks work here. Granted, guitars are like cars (a guy thing...barf) but can we please get some estrogen up in this joint? My review of Twin Town is from a student's perspective - I took piano lessons here and loved it! I came to Twin Town as an adult returning to piano after well over five years of not playing and was hooked up with Alison. She was an amazing teacher. We brushed up on the basics, she convinced me to stray from classical and give jazz a try instead, she taught me fundamentals that I either never learned or forgot, and basically let me explore anything and everything I was curious about. I picked up a random book of Brazilian chord exercises at the library and she was happy to walk me through it. I brought in a CD recording of "Motherless Child", and the next week she had a different version in tow along with the sheet music so I could start to work on it. She encouraged everything that I showed interest in and was enthusiastic about it all. I was sad to have to stop taking the lessons when life (work!) got too hectic. Weekly lessons were not too expensive. My only problem was that I had nothing more than an old keyboard at home (without weighted keys) to practice on. But - added bonus! - the piano room is available for cheap ($5-10) to practice in several nights a week if you arrange it in advance. I think that this is a privilege extended only to students but it's great when you don't have a baby grand at home. The guys that work in the shop were always nice too. I highly recommend Twin Town for lessons! read more

Twin Town is my go to guitar store. Oh sure, some of the staff lack the required social skills to work at Starbucks, but their knowledge of all things gear is top notch. Seems that familiarity is the key. The selection can have peaks and valleys. And it ain't much of a haven for drummers. Sticks, cymbals, some hardware and a kit or 2 here and there. Their amp room is probably the highlight of the store and they don't roll their eyes if you ask to plug something in you probably couldn't really afford. Pretty reasonable rates on renting gear (daily/weekly/monthly). Great trade in, consignment, selling your gear policy. They also offer lessons in various instruments although I can't comment on their rates on those. I've also been impressed with their ability to fix broken gear without taking every one of your red cents. read more

I have been shopping at Twin Town since they opened. Very kid-friendly, and tons of national touring acts have relied on them for emergency repairs, cool vintage gear, and hard to find effects pedals. It's also a great place to find a starter instruments for kids. My 10 year old son has been taking drum lessons there, and he loves it! All of the instructors are professional musicians in the local scene. They also donate a lot of time and resources to local schools and other community organizations. Twin Town is the only guitar shop in the state with a green roof! They actually generate their own electricity from the solar panels and sell energy back to the grid. The occasional rock star will duck in to have Kris (service manager) repair their gear, and my son and I even got to meet Johnny Marr of The Smiths there! I love supporting family run businesses that give back to the community, and Twin Town tops my list. read more

I know nothing about guitars but they were not intimidating, rude, holier than thou -- they were great and super helpful. Can't speak to the value proposition as I don't comparison shop these things. I have a really beautiful '72 P-Bass that just got the most amazing tune up at Twin Town. Chris & Warren know what they are doing. They are thoughtful (fixed things I didn't ask for or knew were wrong), fast and reasonable. For $28 they made my bass play so much better. The pickups were uneven and I could not seem to get it right and I am pretty mechanical. At my band's last gig I sounded better and had more fun because the instrument was working with me and not against me. Thanks guys. Twin Town service is 5 star! read more
