I checked out Groth Music because I love music and this is a music store. It also is a Minnesota institution. I wanted to meet cool employees, have great conversations about music, and honestly, I wanted to buy something. I have a lot of money (well, not really) and I am genuinely in the market for... music stuff. Groth Music has guitars, but guitar is not its primary focus. Instead, Groth is the spot to go to when you want to find sheet music. I think there's still a lot of value in this despite e-commerce. A lot of times, the quality of sheet music isn't clear, especially for pop music. It's very useful to be able to look at the pages for yourself. I'm rating Groth 3 stars because no employee felt like greeting me. I was especially disappointed that the guy in the guitar section simply sat at his desk without even trying to engage me at all. He semi-grumpily said "let me know if you have any questions." I genuinely could've bought something, even a guitar, if he took the second to chat with me like many local music shop workers often do. Instead, I got Guitar Center-level service. read more

Sent me a used ocarina at new price, and it was damaged with scratches and pen marks all over it. Mailed in envelope with songbook already in soft case, no printed box or formed space. Currently trying to get refund and return, company ignoring my emails. Fuck Groth. read more

Groth is a cool music store with a large selections of strings, brass, harmonicas, and percussion. The buffalo drums were incredible.

Groth Music is a Twin Cities Institution. They are now located in Bloomington just off of 82nd and Nicollet. There is a huge parking lot. They have a wide array of musical instruments and sheet music. I went in for a single book on music theory for piano. A staff member found it, I paid and was on my way. Would definitely recommend read more

Very disappointed with the repair work done by Groth. I took my horn in for routine maintenance - cleaning and slide alignment. Upon review, the brass tech said they would also do minor dent removal, replace the spit valve pad, and replace the rubber stopper on the crook. When I returned after it had been in the shop for a week, the slide action felt sticky. After mentioning it, the tech noticed a solder that was loose on the slide assembly and explained it should have been caught during the initial servicing. Since their work is warrantied, they keep the horn. When I went to pick it up the following week, the slide still wasn't smooth, so it was retained again for further work. I was then quoted a price for replacement of the slide assembly, which surprised me considering I thought they would correct the work that had already been done. I've attached a video of the slide AFTER oiling, it's obvious the slides are not aligned and the slide action is considerably worse than when I brought it to Groth. I highly recommend looking elsewhere for trombone repair, I now have to consider replacing this horn due to the poor maintenance work completed. read more

Searching high and low for the most competitive price on the Canto Soprano Recorder - I stumbled upon the Groth Music Company. My son broke his, and a quick replacement was needed. Even with postage, Groth provided the best price. Ordering four of the Baroque Fingering Recorders - in blue and red - they arrived a few short days later. Great communication from start to finish - along with the priority delivery - I'm more than satisfied. William E. Lewis Jr. Vero Beach, Florida read more

Groth always has a great selection of in-stock printed music for music educators. I find numerous great songs and resources every time I shop. Groth is my first stop for any printed music orders because they arrive so quickly. My road rep, Jordan, is amazing. He is so responsive to any request that I have and is very prompt and professional. I have enjoyed getting to know him and love his passion for music and music education. He also came to my school and worked with my low brass students when we hosted a band festival - my students loved him! read more

Felix is the man!!!! During these quarantined times, I wanted to buy a ukulele to learn something new and keep me preoccupied. I called Groth music and they were so accommodating, knowledgable and quick. Originally I was just going to buy a uke from Amazon, but when buying an instrument, especially, you want order with and from someone who knows what they're talking about. Felix, and the team at Groth, do. I called on a Saturday, they got back to me on Monday. After talking over everything, we finalized the deal the next day and I received the ukulele by Saturday (Also, keep in mind, I live in California. That bad boy shipped in four days.) Not only did I receive the uke, but Felix put together a "care package" for me with a two books and a bag as well. And since I wasn't there in person, he sent photos to my phone of different types of ukes to help me with my decision. He literally went above and beyond in every way possible. Give back to your local stores and get your groove on with Groth. You'll be glad you did. read more

They do great repairs. Have any type of instrument you could ever want. The staff is super nice and very helpful. What more can you want out of a music store? We have had a flute and piccalo serviced there and always had great work done at a good price. read more

Ohhhhh, I'm smitten! I was out to find a beginner's piano instruction book (I'm preparing myself for a 1-year-goal that begins next week on my 36th Birthday to practice the piano everyday for 36 minutes! (at least)) and went on Yelp to see the closest locations to me. It was between Guitar Center, Schmitt Music, and Groth Music. Since I'm drawn to independently owned stores AND because I hadn't heard of Groth, this was any easy decision. Having grown up playing the cello during most of my childhood and into a bit of my childhood, as well as having picked up the guitar in high school & college, it only took a few steps before I was endeared to this store. The appearance on the outside from the parking lot gives off the 70s/80's strip mall look, but the inside is filled with treasures untold (translation: the store contents COMPLETELY redeem the appearance of this store from the inside-out)! I'm not purposefully being dramatic here (but yes, PURPOSEFULLY punny) when I write that I felt a chord struck within. If no one else had been in the store, I honestly think I would have cried. I was feeling the sparks and regrets of having so much music buried underneath me for so long. Even though I came for piano music, I looked to my left and saw that they had a stringed instrument room. Not only were there violins and violas, but there were multiple cellos & bass...and even harps in this smaller side room. Having played the cello, I generally had to go to specialty stores (like House of Note in St. Louis Park) that were very small and somewhat limited in selection. But here...HERE I was impressed with their variety of instruments. While looking longingly at the selection of cellos, I even heard someone pull out and play the hammer dulcimer(!). In another room, someone pulled down a guitar and started playing songs. When I walked throughout the rest of the store, aisles and aisles of familiar, vaguely familiar, and very foreign instruments unfolded before me. I kept thinking 'I HAVE to come back! I HAVE TO COME BACK!' To listen to music is one thing...to PLAY music is powerful! When I finally forced myself to start looking for a beginner's piano book, I found a large room full of music books, instructional cds, and sheet music. The variety is great and if I had allowed myself, I could have spent all day here reveling in old songs I once knew as well as knew songs I must know. There is a handful of employees spread throughout the store and appear approachable. I didn't seek out any help and wasn't offered any, but it didn't detract from my overall experience. My experience was beautiful and I will be back again! read more

I was on vacation in Minnesota and came here to buy an instrument. When I had gotten partway home, I opened the box and realized it was empty and I had bought a display box. When I called Groth, they were very prompt about it and actually shipped the instrument I had meant to get to my home in Michigan. read more

I was treated rudely by Tony at the guitar section, when he thought I wasn't going to buy something. He said he had no interest, when I wanted to ask him questions about a guitar I already owned. He said he wanted to help other paying customers instead. I live nearby, and I've bought directly from him many times. I know him by name. I have referred others to him. This is sad because I wanted to give business to what I thought was a friendly local, small music business store. I realized he views his job as only a paycheck, and has no actual interest in building rapport with locals. I didn't want to go to Guitar Center, but they are local, too, and are more friendly. I will make a point of NOT going to Groth again. Guitar Center will be getting every dime from me and my referrals/friends. read more

Groth Music - THANKS SUE! Your care and service are the best - Musical Instruments & Teachers Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

We were helped by many wonderful people at Groth. We came in with my son's used trombone I wanted to get checked out. The first guy opened it up thought it looked pretty good said "you've got yourself a fine of horn here but let's have the repair people look at it." Sue from the repair shop took a look at it and said it was in fine shape. She recommended some lubricant for it which the first guy helped us find. The guy in the music area was able to find us the instructional booklet my son's school required. We looked at the $3000 trombones and Laughed with glee at my $150 trombone and the $20 I spent at Groth to get my son started in band. Thanks Groth! read more

I know this is probably a great place to buy band instruments. This much I'm not disputing. I also LOVE to support local businesses, especially ones that have been around as long as Groth has. All that being said, I will never go there to look at guitar strings or accessories again. They do have a few sales people that strictly do guitars, but I can only assume that they all work on commission. I went there twice to look at strings and once to look at a capo and every time I was there the sales staff were helpful.... Until somebody else walked in and picked up a $2k fender strat or a $3k Gibson LP and suddenly my string or capo purchase goes on the back-burner while they leave me to "help" the other customer. I have yet to actually purchase something from them because literally every time I try to I get bumped by somebody making a bigger purchase. read more

This has to be the music teacher's only music store! They have a great selection of traditional and non-traditional instruments, spanning the cost spectrum so you can chose the quality! Their selection of African drums makes my mouth water every time I walk in the store! They have a great selection of music accessories too! I shop here for gifts, trinkets, posters and the like, especially when it is time to decorate my room. (They have a lot of good educational and non-educational items as well.) Their sheet music section is not as big as I might like to look through, but will definitely satisfy my need when I am looking. They do offer lessons on a variety of instruments if you are interested. Short and sweet review, but basically, you need to go there. If you are a music buff, or need a gift, you will definitely find something to buy and enjoy! read more

A very nice music store selling instruments of many kinds, sheet music, recorded music (not that much...), and instruction. From violins to clarinets, trumpets to drum sets... they have lots. Over the years, I've purchased two guitars, an amp, and myriad guitar accessories at Groth and each one is still serving me well. I'm not sure if Felix is still working there, but he was a huge help when I was making my purchases. Wish I had a Groth in Chicago!! read more

Groth has taken such good care of us over the years. Our personal Groth representative, Jordan Warfield, has made sure to stop by our music classrooms often, making sure we have everything we need. This service helps us run more efficiently as a music team and creates a personal connection with the company we go through for instrument and music orders. I recently placed a very large music order, and knowing that Jordan was handling it with his team made me feel at ease and informed every step of the way. Thank you, Groth! read more

I've been shopping at Groth for several years since I moved to the Cities, and have always gotten good service from them. Good selection of guitars and amps with a knowledgable staff. Only good things happen when I visit Groth. Whether it's finding a great instructional book or sheet music, or getting a great deal on a new guitar or amplifier, or just chatting with extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful experts, I always walk away feeling good. literally amazing experience they fixed my instrument so fast and the people were so nice!

We went here because my six year old's violin instructor recommended it. Our purpose was to rent a violin, something I know nothing about. They were very helpful in determining what size she needed and they promptly filled out the paperwork and got us on our way. Perhaps they just wanted my two small children out of their store before something got broken but I prefer to believe that they are just super helpful. They're reasonably priced, too. $40 for the first four months and then $23 per month after that. read more

I went in to ask for a stomp box. The first salesperson honestly and kindly said he didn't know anything about them, and turned me over to another guy, who stared at us blankly. We explained what we were looking for, and he sort of laughed and said "That's not actually what those are called! It's an easy mistake to make, but that's not what those are called. What *you're* looking for is called a Horsekick." He proceeded to hand me a box that literally said, "Horsekick: Digital Stompbox" The dictionary definition of stompbox is: a percussion instrument consisting of a small wooden box on which the player steps rhythmically. Like, dude. It's fine with me if you don't know the answer to a question. But if you're gonna be condescending, you should probably be right. He then had the good taste to ask that if we come back in, we'd ask for him so he could have the commission. Nope. Not after laughing at me because you incorrectly thought I was wrong. Take a seat. read more

Since I wrote my initial review Al, the manager at Groth, contacted me and provided some context for the issues that I have experienced. He also came through with a refund check for what I was overcharged on the rental. Although my experience was less than stellar Groth Music did own the mistake and fixed it. I appreciate that. For that reason I have raised my rating. Based on the rest of the reviews my experience seems to be an outlier so maybe give them a chance. read more

Long story short, I bought an old stock, but new Getzen 3052S Bb Trumpet from Groth Music via the internet/over-the-phone. The sales person insured me that this instrument was brand new and had no flaws. When I received the trumpet 10 days later, I noticed that the bracing on the trumpet bell was slightly indented into the bell itself. It was hard to tell because of the silver plating reflection. Nonetheless, I shipped this trumpet to Kanstul in a Torpedo Bag (indestructible case by-the-way) to get gold plated, and Kanstul confirmed my suspicions. They had to repair the dent before they could gold plate the trumpet. I sent an email to Groth about this issue, and I never heard back from them. This transaction was the first and last time that I will do business with this company. read more
