Jordan Warfield (Tuba) - low brass sectional at our band festival.

Groth always has a great selection of in-stock printed music for music educators. I find numerous great songs and resources every time I shop. Groth is my first stop for any printed music orders because they arrive so quickly. My road rep, Jordan, is amazing. He is so responsive to any request that I have and is very prompt and professional. I have enjoyed getting to know him and love his passion for music and music education. He also came to my school and worked with my low brass students when we hosted a band festival - my students loved him!

Ohhhhh, I'm smitten! I was out to find a beginner's piano instruction book (I'm preparing myself for a 1-year-goal that begins next week on my 36th Birthday to practice the piano everyday for 36 minutes! (at least)) and went on Yelp to see the closest locations to me. It was between Guitar Center, Schmitt Music, and Groth Music. Since I'm drawn to independently owned stores AND because I hadn't heard of Groth, this was any easy decision. Having grown up playing the cello during most of my childhood and into a bit of my childhood, as well as having picked up the guitar in high school & college, it only took a few steps before I was endeared to this store. The appearance on the outside from the parking lot gives off the 70s/80's strip mall look, but the inside is filled with treasures untold (translation: the store contents COMPLETELY redeem the appearance of this store from the inside-out)! I'm not purposefully being dramatic here (but yes, PURPOSEFULLY punny) when I write that I felt a chord struck within. If no one else had been in the store, I honestly think I would have cried. I was feeling the sparks and regrets of having so much music buried underneath me for so long. Even though I came for piano music, I looked to my left and saw that they had a stringed instrument room. Not only were there violins and violas, but there were multiple cellos & bass...and even harps in this smaller side room. Having played the cello, I generally had to go to specialty stores (like House of Note in St. Louis Park) that were very small and somewhat limited in selection. But here...HERE I was impressed with their variety of instruments. While looking longingly at the selection of cellos, I even heard someone pull out and play the hammer dulcimer(!). In another room, someone pulled down a guitar and started playing songs. When I walked throughout the rest of the store, aisles and aisles of familiar, vaguely familiar, and very foreign instruments unfolded before me. I kept thinking 'I HAVE to come back! I HAVE TO COME BACK!' To listen to music is one thing...to PLAY music is powerful! When I finally forced myself to start looking for a beginner's piano book, I found a large room full of music books, instructional cds, and sheet music. The variety is great and if I had allowed myself, I could have spent all day here reveling in old songs I once knew as well as knew songs I must know. There is a handful of employees spread throughout the store and appear approachable. I didn't seek out any help and wasn't offered any, but it didn't detract from my overall experience. My experience was beautiful and I will be back again!

THANKS SUE! Your care and service are the best

UNBELIEVABLE SERVICE. Sue the trumpet repair lady is such a blessing to us. She knows her stuff and she cares for our instruments. While I wait for repairs the rest of the staff help with any questions I have and their selection and knowledge is great. Thanks Groth!

Confused, and slightly pissed off: A week before my wedding…read moreI called to ask about rentals, the person I spoke with on the phone was confident in everything I was interested in, and quoted $550 for the rental. He also mentioned that this specific store was well stocked and I didn't need to make a reservation, so I didn't. A week later (two days before my wedding), I go in person to make the actual rental. Here is where things get interesting. They told me they don't usually rent out wireless mics, I needed two of them, they also didn't have the mixing board I wanted (Model-12 with SD Card recording capabilities). Fortunately they were able to pivot and rented me some new gear that worked well, but they charged $700 for the rental, so whoever I spoke with on the phone either wasn't well informed, or didn't calculate the rental properly, either way, the additional $150 ($300 with the deposits) didn't result in customer happiness. They assured me that all of the gear was checked ahead of time, and everything was ready to be used. They also said they would throw in a couple extra XLRs Incase anything wasn't correct. This was not the case. I should have counted the XLRs because I thought I was renting 10, and there were only 9 in the package, and to top it off, 3 of them didn't work. The band had to literally drive into town and buy 4 additional XLRs. This is unacceptable, and one of the main reasons why I'm writing this review. Not to get petty, but the batteries were also dead in the wireless lav mic, and one of the four mic stands (see photo) was broken. Again, Unacceptable. Other than that, the sound was great, and the wedding was incredible. Okay, after the wedding, I go back and drop off the rental. I explain all of these issues and they say "oh sorry about that", then I ask "what can be done to protect the customer from this happening? You have rental insurance to protect the gear, but is there not any security or compensation to the customer if the gear doesn't work?" ... then they took off an additional $50, which is fine and all, but doesn't even cover the additional expenses of the 4 new XLRs or batteries I had to buy. Kind of a long story, but all in all, seems like there are some systemic things that need to be worked on, specifically in the gear checking, and customer guarantee areas.

When I got them back, all three sounded immediately better. The biggest change I noticed was in a Takamine P2 that Is my primary acoustic. Not only did the work get done flawlessly, but they took the time to explain why it was better. In addition to the Takamine, they worked on my father's vintage Martin and took great care of it. I would trust Artifact Guitars with any instrument. It's clear they can make a basic guitar great and a pro guitar amazing. In addition, I live 60 miles from the shop. Jes personally drove my guitars out to my home to save me the trip of driving down there a second time. Great service. Great results. A+.

Jes did an amazing job fixing a headstock no other luthier would touch, and also gave it a nice fret job and installed an aftermarket bridge. They made me pay in advance and then proceeded to take several months to complete it, I had to buy the bridge myself and deliver it to them, and then told me they were unable to figure out how to wire it up. So after hundreds of dollars and many weeks I ended up picking up a bass that STILL didn't work. I felt they should have gone the extra mile for me and researched it to make me happy, because a 5 minute Google search gave me the wiring and I just did it myself. They do nice work and Jes was friendly but I felt like I was not a priority.

We had planned to buy, as he's a serious student, but weren't quite ready when this emergency occurred. Keith in the low brass shop went above and beyond to meet with us and make the process easy. He spent a ton of time with my son and his teacher, trying instruments and making sure everyone was comfortable. At his urging, we ended up taking one tuba home to try for a week, to make sure it was right. Once we made the decision, Keith also went out of his way to work with my out of state father, who had decided to foot the bill and needed to work out the payment details. Prior to all that happening, my son also decided he wanted to try to learn trombone, so we rented one from Schmitt, and Keith gave him a crash course on positions on the slide. The front desk staff who arranged the rental were also extremely friendly and helpful. I was saddened to read some of the lower rated reviews here. We've always had great service at Schmitt - even back when there was a small one in Woodbury where we bought sheet music and supplies.
