Great food fix! Friendly service. We were greeted as soon as walked in. It's a small restaurant, cute decor and very casual. We ordered the cheeseburger, crispy chicken sandwich, mac & cheese, strawberry mint lemonade, and chocolate velvet cake. Lol! Hungry, hungry!!! Everything was delicious, flavourful, fresh, soft sandwich buns, filling and satisfying. Highly recommended!

Sososo good! I order takeout here at least once a week because I'm always craving Hey, Sunshine! My go-to is their build your own bowl option + mac 'n cheese. The workers are CFA level friendly & my order is accurate 99% of the time. Prices are a bit high, but it's worth it considering they use quality, yummy ingredients. Will be back again next week :)

Super blown away. I'm not vegan and this was actually my first time trying a vegan restaurant. Everything tasted amazing and hit all the right flavor notes. It wasn't just "good for vegan food," it was just really good food. The staff and the owner were super friendly and welcoming which made the whole experience even better. It's also the perfect place to grab something after a workout at the gym nearby. The food is healthy, filling, and tastes great while hitting all the nutritional goals. I tried the backyard BBQ tofu, for only a little over $15! This place honestly changed my perspective on vegan food and I'd pick it over the usual fast casual spots. I'll definitely be coming back a few more times before moving. This place is the gold standard for what locally owned restaurants should be. Highly recommend checking it out, you won't regret it!

Really yummy vegan comfort food. The service is friendly and quick, you stand and order at the counter, seat yourself, and then they drop the food off. Prices are pretty standard. The inside is clean and cute. It's nice that there's a free parking lot, so none of the usual LA struggle. The mac and cheese was the best, most convincing cheese I've ever had. Portions are generous. Loved it overall.

4.5 stars! This is an all vegan restaurant. I came by around 2pm on Saturday and it was still plenty busy! Not only was the restaurant busy, but so was the parking lot. A decently large parking lot but shared with many other restaurants and a gym. I was circling in loops in an endless line for awhile. As for the restaurant, it is pretty small on the inside and the line crowds out the door really quickly. You can order at the counter or there's one self kiosk on the side. Order, get a number, and sit at a table and they'll bring the food out to you. Self-bus the dishes afterward. My partner and I got the limited edition hot sesame chicken with crispy rice bowl, crispy chicken sandwich and for sides: Mac and cheese and chickpea nuggets. My favorites might've been the sides. Those had the best flavor of all. The bowl was good and felt healthy but was just a bit underwhelmed by flavor. All their dressings were on the watery and more runny side. I suppose that means it's healthier? The chicken sandwich was solid. Had all the fixings to hit every flavor note.

    Custom Bowl

I liked this place; it serves good food, but it's a bit overrated on Yelp, in my opinion. I made a custom bowl, with half rice and half salad, plant-based chicken, and a bunch of toppings, including a bunch of roasted veggies and croutons. I also got a cookie with sprinkles on it. The bowl felt nourishing and it was tasty, but I wasn't blown away. It's a neighborhood lunch spot to me, and a solid one, but not a place to go out of your way for. The cookie was just okay. Ultimately, I'm not in a rush to come back but I could see it happening.

Hot Sesame Chicken Bowl *Limited Time Only
    Cindy C.

The limited time bowl with half rice half greens was so delicious. It has a good flavor in the sesame sauce and good crunchy/soft texture balance. My mom either got the hot or crispy chicken sandwich which was hot, fresh, and had a good spice to it. The lemonade was a good tart one. The macaroni tasted like how I remember when I used to eat animal products and the crispy onions were an excellent topping. There was only one person working at the time but she was very sweet and attentive to her work. Even though there's a tablet to order from, she was ready to help and patient with me when I was ordering. The place was a bit small with tables close together but there's also outdoor seating. And there's a restroom

While working just adjacent to Hey Sunshine I popped in to try it out. And what a delicious decision! I was greeted by a friendly woman (I'll assume manager or owner who was training "Zach"), and she was so warm and welcoming! She inquired if I had been before and I said "no", so she began to provide information about the amazing menu. I asked about the window special "hot sesame chicken bowl" in comparison to the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and she shared the bowl was spicy but filling and so I went with it! While I waited, she offered water (available on the counter) and I listened to how she was training Zach. She was so passionate and caring describing how to gently place bowls in the to go bags and why it makes a difference. Why some get utensils and some don't, but she cared and it showed. Her passionate care for presentation showed so much pride in the product and that alone hyped me up to already start planning my lunch for tomorrow (yes, I'll be coming back for sure!). The restaurant was clean and bright and takes pride in their presentation and food and it shows, look at those YELP! Awards proudly displayed on their counter!!! And they are definitely well deserved! My Hot Sesame Chicken Bowl was served on greens, came with a delicious citrus vinaigrette dressing and the freshest vegetables! hey Sunshine, everything about you is Excellent!

    Backyard BBQ Tofu Bowl

I stumbled upon this spot on Yelp, looking for a bite to eat in Culver City. I'm so happy I decided to come here, because this spot lives up to the 5 star reviews. It's located in a plaza with atrocious parking, but once you manage to snag a spot after a couple loops around, you are greeted by friendly faces at Hey, Sunshine Kitchen. There are so many delicious sounding options, but I opted for the Backyard BBQ Tofu bowl which comes with sunshine rice, BBQ tofu, sweet potato, coleslaw, sautéed cauliflower, grilled corn, diced tomato, shoestring onions, fresh cilantro, massaged kale, pickled red onions, lime, and buttermilk ranch. They give a generous portion and it's a hefty bowl. You can taste the quality and freshness of each ingredient, and this bowl was incredible. The flavors and textures of everything was perfect. Ugh, I wish they had more locations because Culver is a trek for me. They make healthy food taste like the best thing on Earth and make the experience enjoyable. I will be returning for sure and in the meantime, will be trying to recreate this at home.

Finally tried this place out and it is worth all the hype!!! My friends and I are not vegan, but we all LOVED our food! Everything was fresh, flavorful and delicious. The portions are a nice size as well. I also recommend getting the spiced hibiscus tea! The space is bright and cute with seating both inside and out, mostly 2-top tables. The staff were very friendly including the owner. They made sure we had what we needed and answered any questions we had. The restaurant is located in a shopping center which had plenty of available parking in the lot. Best casual vegan place I've ever been to! Looking forward to going back!

WE LOVE PLANT BASED OPTIONS So far, I've had the jackfruit taco, falafel bowl and the chickpea sandwich. 10/10 all around. Jackfruit taco def has a kick. I'm so happy hey, sunshine kitchen joined Culver City.

    Potato Salad or Soup?
    Adam O.

The crispy chicken sandwich is super but the potato salad has been sitting in the sunshine too long it melted. Too soupy, like a chowder and not a salad.

A nice and refreshing find for a simple Sunday Brunch.... My friend and I both built our own bowls and my meal was flavorful, light and refreshing just like I like.... I personally got Fresh Salad Greens for the Base, Sesame Crusted Avocado for the Main, for the 6 toppings: broccoli, black beans, red onions, sweet potato, beets and cabbage; and finally for my sauce I got the lemon herb aioli.... Service was simple and they help give you recommendations when you order, after that you sit down and they bring you your order.... Interior seating is limited but there was space I like that the place is bright and nice inside... It is quite far from me but I would try to go again.

Hey, Sunshine Kitchen Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Hey, Sunshine Kitchen

Do they list nutritional information anywhere?

Are you still conducting vegan cooking classes?

Thank you for the question! We have our 2 year anniversary coming up so we will skip our August class and hold a party on August 10th, but we will start classes up back in September! We’d love to have you join us.

    Where is best parking?

There is an open parking lot in the area. Plenty of free parking.

Do they use Nutritional yeast in their dishes? Are their chickpea burgers soy free?

Hi Chloe! We are the owners and happy to answer this question.…

Are there cashews or pistachios in the "contains nuts" dishes? I'm highly allergic unfortunately. Thanks!

I don't think so but you should check with Jenny, the owner

Are there any soy free options?

Yes it varies depending on menu item

Are there allium-free options (no onion, no garlic)?

I like the Avocado Crunch Bowl over salad greens with a lime wedge, which is onion- and garlic-free; you can also get the "build a bowl" option to customize an onion- and garlic-free dish!

While I am not at all vegan, it can be a fantastic change of pace when trying a cuisine that is not at all my regular routine. Happily, Variable has tons of choices, and we loved what we got. I was drawn towards the 'N Seoul Bowl' (Korean spicy plant based pork, house marinated Kimchi, organic edamame, steamed organic spinach, carrot, steamed broccoli, onion , organic shiitake, topped with green onion and sesame seeds and side organic quinoa). So good, a bit spicy, and so many flavors on the plate it was impossible to not only love it, but I could not finish it, either. That goes from all their dishes. They are big, and in our experience, it came out piping hot soon after ordering it. My companion tried the 'Indian Tikka Masala' (homemade Indian curry, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, yellow squash, potatoes, cabbage, chickpea, micro green, Served with blend wild Jasmin rice and Indian Flat Bread). Tastes so fresh, hearty, with just enough of a kick to it. I look forward to trying some of their other dishes, too. The burger that the table near us ordered looked fantastic. I gotta think that everything here is pretty dang great.

I got the AvoToast which is vegan by default (yay!) and it was very tasty and meticulously crafted. But the real show-stopper was the BUTTERFLY PEA SMOOTHIE BOWL (also default vegan). WOW!!! I've had smoothie bowls all over and it's definitely up there in the top smoothie bowls I've ever had. I couldn't stop eating it!! It had a very nice natural sweetness which was undeniable, but it wasn't overly sweet or saccharine in an artificial tasting way at all and had the right assortment and amount of toppings. And it was picture perfect beautiful to look at too. I absolutely destroyed that thing haha. The person behind the counter helped me figure out what I should get and was very patient (I had a little first time analysis paralysis ). I'm only docking a star because when I first went in it smelled very strongly of onion and the smell didn't go away completely the entire time I was there so it was quite strong. They did have the AC blasting maybe to combat the onion smell? But it was way too cold in there even before I started eating the smoothie bowl (and almost unbearably cold once I did--but it was so good I couldn't stop). I feel like those are easy fixes though and if you're getting the food to-go like most people seemed to be doing, wouldn't be much of an issue. Every time, the price deters me from going as frequently. So I was interested when I saw on their site that they changed things up because they know affordability is a concern and they wanted to rebrand as somewhere you could eat regularly instead of just a special occasion. We took our out of state friends who were visiting. For a party of 4 we spent over $400. I also really don't like that they made their rolls only 6 pieces now when they used to be 8 (so much easier to share with 4 people). The food quality is still really good but I don't understand what they mean about their prices having accomodated so people can have it as a regular meal instead of a fancy treat. At that price it still sits squarely in the "fancy treat" box for me. That said there is nothing wrong with being a "fancy treat" kind of place if the entire experience screams "luxury." This time we had the absolute worst service we have ever had. We were 15 min late due to traffic but called to inform them since they charge $25 pp for noshows. They didn't pick up the first time and I got a weird outgoing message and could not leave a message. When I tried again several minutes later, someone picked up and I got my message across. Considering we were late it was really surprising that we had to wait an additional 10 min or so to be seated. A frazzled looking woman just asked us to wait and and said someone else would be with us to seat us. She had us wait at a set table which was really confusing as it was unclear if that was going to be our table (set for 4) or we just were supposed to wait at table to be seated. Eventually we were taken to the other table but we did not even get water for probably 30 min and then only when we asked for some. They did not pour for us. With those prices I would expect prompt service, pulling out chairs, placing napkins in the lap, checking on how the food is and if we need any water, etc. The food took a really long time to come out. In fact we spent an additional 40 min or so after we had eaten waiting for them to make 3 takeout rolls because I think they only had one person in the kitchen. It felt like they had had several members of their staff fall ill in one day with how thin the staff was spread. Two women were running around managing the entire restaurant, trying to seat people, manage bills, orders, cleaning up plates, serving food, etc. When the spicy baked scallop roll arrived the server told us it had already been torched in the kitchen. We had raved to our friends about how they torch it at your table and it clearly is written on the menu when you order it "torched at your table." So, of course this was a huge disappointment. Luckily it is my favorite roll so we ordered a second one and I made sure to request it be torched at the table. But the fact I had to request it when it is expected based on their own menu is bizarre. Finally, we ordered the strawberry rose waffle to share for dessert. After about 10 min we saw what we ordered being served to a table further down and it looked great. When we asked about our dessert, only then did the lady tell us they were sold out out that dessert. What if we had not asked about the status of our order? Would we still be sitting there waiting today? Did she forget we had ordered it? At the end of the night when we were waiting for the to go rolls (with only 1 other party in the restaurant at that point) we received many apologies as it was obvious we were ready to go and just waiting for the food. However apologies only go so far when you have already received subpar service for steep prices. Customer service in this situation would have been apologies plus amends, maybe comping the rolls we ordered to go, or offering any kind of discount on the next visit. Anything at all to back up the apologies. This visit only reconfirmed that Shojin should be reserved for when we have extra time to kill and cash to blow and we will probably just get takeout at this rate if we do go back.
