This was the first time I've been to this salon. WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!!!! I had been using the same salon for decades, but the women I was using had to retire due to health concerns during COVID. I've tried 2 salons since I have been unable to see my previous person could no longer cut my hair and they DIDN'T LISTEN and did what they wanted to my hair. Doreen has been cutting my hair ever since I had enough with Hair Cuttery and their terrible haircuts. I remember the first day I came here and, as I was getting my hair cut, Doreen actually explained everything she was doing. It was the first time a hairdresser has EVER done that, which is insane because I feel that all hairdressers SHOULD do that. It made me feel at ease and more trusting with her expertise. Once she gave me a haircut that helped me get rid of my horribly thick, 2005-style side bangs I knew I'd be coming to Hey Red from now on. I have been getting my hair done over the last 10 years by the same person. Due to a misunderstanding I had to go to someone new so I was super scared/nervous/hesitant finding someone new! So I related on my favorite and most trustworthy consumer review app (Yelp!) and found HeyRed! I am ssssssooooo happy that I came here. Everyone here is so professional and polite and sweet and kind and welcoming. As soon as you walk in your greeted by Donna or MJ who are both very nice and seeing their hair immediately let me know I made the right decision! They offer you something to drink as you wait for your appointment. They go the extra mile to get a good understanding of how you've been treating your hair. First I came for a consultation at no charge. I was introduced to my stylist, Kat. She has the most BEAUTIFUL vibrant red hair. (Even more reassurance I made the right decision). We went over where I'm trying to go ultimately and she came up with a great plan. 2 days later I came for my appointment. Everything about our experience was 5 *****! Kat is very nice and pleasant. I got the best shampoo massage I ever imagined lol super relaxing. She proceeded to cut, color and style my hair. I can go on and on about how great my experience was. I've been going here for over three years now; they're the only place I trust to turn my hair a lustrous purple. I usually ask for Michele, since she has the most experience dying my hair, but I've also had a positive experience with Doreen and Deb. Everyone is very professional, and they offer you coffee or tea while you wait. They're not cheap: they charge for bleach/dye by the amount used, which is a lot in my case (~$300 to bleach and dye my entire head of hair). However, I've found I've gotten my money's worth: my hair was still very purple, 6 1/2 months since my last visit, by the time my growing roots finally necessitated going back for my most recent re-dye. A solid choice of salon, and I intend to keep going for the foreseeable future. read more

I move a lot and I often find it hard to find a stylist/salon that can understand me when I talk about what I want my hair to look like. It's a combination of edgy yet refined enough to be pushing the edge of business appropriate. Then I found Kat and Hey Red! here in Maryland. Kat understood my quirky hair desires and I've NEVER been happier with my hair than when she worked her magic with dye and scissors on it. To think I was ever nervous about finding a stylist! The Hey Red! salon is the most warm and welcoming professional salon I've ever been to. Instantly it feels like you're among talented friends. They're quick to offer you something to drink, making it feel much like home. I tend to go for a chai tea. They also have some of the best products I've ever had used on my hair. I recently went from blue-black hair to brown and ash blonde (all by Kat) and I swear that the Eufora line of deep conditioning shampoo/conditioner helped a lot in keeping my hair happy. I could go on for awhile, but bottom line, this is a GREAT salon and I'm happy to have met Kat and will be heartbroken when I have to leave. I saw this place and all of the good reviews here on yelp, so decided to try it out. I made an appointment, in advance, and the day of my appointment they made me sit and wait for an HOUR after my scheduled appointment time. All because she had taken a walk-in. What the heck was the point of me making an appointment?! I brought in a picture of the hairstyle I wanted. I really needed some layers put in to add some more life to my boring flat hair. I felt all she did was a couple snips. She asked me what I thought and I said "Wait, you can't possibly be finished." She said "What's wrong?" Which I replied "where are the layers I asked for?" She went back at my hair, making tiny snips while talking to another hair dresser. She finished...still no layers. She than persisted that everyone would love my haircut. I said "What haircut? You took off less than a half an inch and this resembles nothing like what I asked or showed you." By this point she was rushing me out the door for another client. I'm hoping maybe another appointment will change my view of this place but so far I would not call this my go to hair salon. read more

Yelp helped me find this place so I thought I'd give a little something back. Only going to review the hair care as I did not use their nail or skin services. I had been dying for a haircut and wanted to go to a place where a stylist would help me figure out what I wanted, listen to my concerns, and give me the best darn haircut out there. Hey Red did all of the above, and I absolutely love my new 'do. Consult, shampoo, cut, style, all for about 40 dollars. I was able to get a next day appointment at a time I wanted which was a nice surprise. Loved my stylist, Deb, she was fantastic and I'll be seeing her again. The shop is bright, welcoming, they offer you a beverage while you wait, and the whole experience is wonderful. I highly recommend coming here to anyone who is looking for a salon and professional hair care. This is a fantastic place to get a great haircut. I've never been one to spend money my appearance, but if you need a new style or just want to trim yours so it looks fantastic, this is the place to go. The salon is clean, comfortable, and well decorated. It has a small cozy feel that instantly puts you at ease. The staff are fantastic and always make you feel welcome. After talking with them, you get the impression that your opinion has been heard - dare I say they actually listen to what you want done with your hair and will give recommendations if you're looking for them. The first time I went here was to have my hair and make-up done for my friend's wedding. The experience was amazing. They pampered all of us in the wedding party. Having never been to a salon this nice, I was floored when they offered up bagels, pastries, coffee, and juice! Crazy...I left feeling quite glamorous and looking forward to smiling in some wedding photos. I went back last November to try a totally new style. I cut 10 inches off and went from long hair to a short bob that everyone loved. I gave the woman who cut it, Phyllis, total creative control (scary, I know) and she did a tremendous job. Getting a haircut here will run you between $35 and $50 dollars depending on what you tip. They keep your info on file and send coupons around holidays and your birthday (great for someone looking to save some cash occasionally). Having moved to Maryland less than two months ago, I had my reservations about finding a new salon that I would enjoy as much as the one in my hometown. It's tough choosing salons--haircuts can run pretty expensive, especially for women, so I wanted to make sure I found one I would like. Out of the ones I looked at on Yelp, Hey Red! seemed the most promising, so I decided to give them a try. I'm glad I did. Michele was a great stylist who was friendly and helpful in giving me recommendations or answering any questions I had. I had trouble deciding what I wanted to do with my bangs and she was able to help me come to a decision without feeling pressured, which is something I value highly in a hair stylist. In the end, I got a great haircut and would definitely go back to Michele again. The atmosphere was good, just a small, low-key salon space with seating and hair products on sale. They also offer you drinks while you wait. While I had a good experience overall, it's hard giving it five stars because of the prices. $40 for a shampoo and cut (not even blow-drying...that would have cost $50+) felt too high, especially for getting so much length taken off. If blow-drying had been covered, I would have thought it more reasonable. In general though, I enjoyed what I received and highly recommend Michele if you want a great haircut. read more

I came here based on yelp reviews--I'm new to the area and even though I do not live near Laurel (25-30 min if no traffic), I was willing to try it out since nothing near me sounded very promising. I'm glad I followed that instinct! I was assigned to Meri, and now I don't want anyone else to cut my hair while I live here. The whole experience there has been very good. Let's start with the front desk--I've always been greeted warmly and offered a hot drink. They have lots of different herbal teas, which is my favorite, and they have a drink menu posted which is very convenient (especially my first time there when I otherwise would have felt awkward asking them about their selection, etc). Really a nice touch! Next, the shampooing. Oh, a little bit of heaven. Seriously, I love how this woman shampoos my hair. I have gone to more expensive salons by far and never had as great a scalp massage as I get here. I always wish I had a little more time in that chair but I never feel gypped. Wonderful. Then, there's Meri! She is friendly and has always been responsive to however I was feeling that day (chatty vs. not). I always come in feeling tired and sort of not talkative after work, and by the time she's starting to dry my hair I'm feeling a lot looser and chatty. My first time in, my hair was a mess. A bunch of personal stuff had come up in my life and I had put off a haircut for so long, my long hair was COMPLETELY FULL of split ends. When she was done, I felt like a different person and my hair felt new. She works with my hair well--it's an interesting combo of coarse, baby fine and medium strands--and I will be back and be happy to recommend Hey Red! to other area friends. read more

Ok, so I will freely admit that my review could be a little biased since Michele L. is my stepsister, but I am by far her pickiest client!!! Just ask her! Michele has worked at other salons previously and I'll tell you Hey Red! is absolutely the best! The most impressive part of the Hey Red! experience during my first visit was that upon entering you are offered a drink from a long list of teas and coffees or water if you please. The decor is great and lighting is good which is pretty important when it comes to a hair cut or color. The shampoo has always been good and currently Joe W. does the shampooing. He has a great sense of humor and does a good job. Both Michele & Doreen have given me excellent hair cuts. I drive about 40 mins to get my hair done here because I find it so difficult to find a stylist that is as consistent! Scarlett is also amazing! She has done facial waxing and make up for me... My brows & make up have never looked so good!!! Today I'm getting a FREE hand paraffin treatment from Scarlett because it's my birthday month & I can't wait! They are great about sending coupons for your birthday, etc. One of my favorite things is that Hey Red! communicates with you via email and I have never had a salon do that before! The product lines used here are top of the line. My hair color lasts a ridiculously long time. My first visit to the salon today and I am definitely hooked I won't be going anyplace else. The customer service here is the best I have seen in a very long time! They know all their clients very well and on a first name basis. As soon as you walk in the door you are greeted with a smile and hospitality (something that is getting rarer by the day). They offer complimentary coffee and tea with many choices of sweeteners and flavors for the coffee. My appointment was early so I chose the coffee. They took the time for a consultation to find out what I like and don't like as well as what type of hair I have and what I thought my problems were. After my cut was completed they even took time to show me how to dry it so i can replicate (or come close anyway) at home. As busy as they were I never felt rushed or neglected and did not have to wait. Products were offered and suggested but I never felt as though I "had" to buy them. Loved this place and would definitely recommend it. I will say it has been years since I have been to an actual salon so it almost killed me when the total came up but compared to other salons they were very competitive and the wonderful customer service and cut was worth every penny. read more

I have never been so nervous about trusting yelp as I was with my hair. Having just moved here from Hampton roads and a great, nationally trained Scruples salon, I was terrified to have to get my hair done in this - pardon me - small town. But Meri proved quite capable, she listened to my incessant details about the textured cuts I prefer for my bangs and the bottom line of my hair. She helped match my color back to the preferred natural red I look so adorably Ginger in. She also took her time in both my color and cut, which can be a problem in almost any situation. I felt her apply, comb and detangle each section of my hair as she colored it. The lady that shampooed my hair reminded me of my Grandma, but with ADD. She was very spunky, though maybe a little rough on the scalp. Meri dried and cut my hair. The time she spent thinning my hair is probably the most important to me since I have pounds of hair, but I never felt like she did anything wrong. Oh, and my hair is adorable. read more

I have been going to this salon for many years. Michele usually cuts my hair. I have also had Debi cut my hair. Honesty, would trust any of the stylists who work there to cut my hair. My mom goes, too. And she doesn't get around well. Everyone is always attentive to her needs. My sister also gets her hair done here, too. Even when they are packed. I have gone to Hey Red! curtsey of the review on Yelp twice now. The first time to chop off and donate my hair, and the other many months later to return to my post-donate-cut length. Doreen cut my hair both times and did a superb job. She was the one to suggest the style in the first place. She also helped me find better products for my hair. The atmosphere is very warm, friendly, and easy to relax in. I recently moved out of Laurel, but plan on returning to Hey Red! for my monthly hair appointments. I can't see going anywhere else. I was able to come back and see Michelle, who is amazing, and she fixed it free of charge. A very happy customer!] I got the worst haircut of my life at this place. No exaggeration, I literally mean my hair has never looked worse. This review does NOT include Michelle, who seems to be the only one who can cut men's hair. I've been going to Michell for a couple months now, but I was in a rush this weekend and booked with someone else, and now I have to go pay someone else to fix the disaster on my head. I won't say names besides Michelle, who, again, is absolutely superb and I could not recommend higher. But don't book with anyone else at Hey Red. I've never not tipped someone, but I came close today. What I asked for was a #2 on the sides with an inch taken off the top. I even pointed out how high I wanted her to take the #2. What I got was a short patch on top of my head almost like an off-center bald spot, an inch-wide ring of uncut hair all around the top, and a messy and uneven neckline. I wish I could post photos of how hilariously awful this haircut is because it must sound like I'm exaggerating. I cannot stress this enough, it looks like I tried to cut it myself without a mirror. The weird short patch is going to take at least a month to grow out. I didn't even include the small things, like asking if I wanted product, listening to me say no, then immediately putting gel in my hair. I wouldn't go back if not for Michelle, who really is fantastic and doesn't deserve less than five stars. But I'm so upset at the complete waste of time and money. I don't know how I'm going to make time this weekend to get my hair cut somewhere else before work on Monday. I don't even know how much of this is fixable. read more

HORRIBLE! Yelp reviews said they were "great" so that's why I went there. HORRIBLE customer service and most pointless "haircut" ever! The owner gave me bad customer service over the phone, in person when I came in, while I made my payment, and while I walked out the door. Her employee did my hair though. I paid $60 to have my hair look the same as it did when I first stepped in. I told the stylist I wanted a specific kind of style and she said she can make it work. The results looked WORSE than when I came in with all my split ends! Back to the owner, though, she must've been having a bad day or something because she was really snobby and when I accidentally hit a cardboard sign with her entrance door, she didn't respond when I said sorry but she did stare down the cardboard 'til I picked it up. She never once made contact and she didn't help me when I came in her salon. When I had to pay, she had a little attitude about me not tipping her employee so she kind of guilt tripped me into it. So you pay according to how experienced the hair stylist is which I think is pretty fair. I called the day-of and asked for a more experienced person but they only had a level 1 (least experienced) and I wanted a haircut that day so I agreed. Wish I waited or went somewhere else. I didn't get a horrible horrible haircut but it wasn't worth the money. I asked if she had any suggestions for a new style and she didn't. So I told her trim, side bangs, layers. It took a long time just to do that and I was running late for an interview. And the cut wasn't form fitting or look good. Over-priced for the level 1 hair stylist. Everyone seems to love this salon but I didn't have a great experience. I recently moved to MD from WPA and I am having the worst time trying to find a salon I like. I decided to try Hey Red since they have great reviews and the last salon I went to dyed my hair a chocolate brown after asking for the same light brown I was used to getting. It was easy to get an apt which i was excited about since i was in desperate need of a hair cut and color. When I first arrived I heard some whispers that others stylists were having to help the "new" girl since she was so far behind. It was soon realized I had the "new" girl Kat. My experience went downhill from there. I went in for a cut and color and was at the salon for over 3 hours. My salon in WPA I would've been in and out in a little over an hour. After asking where I parted my hair (i part on my left side) she parted it in the middle and started to cut. She never asked how I wanted my bangs and she cut them at a slant. I always get my bangs cut straight across. I wanted to go lighter since I never wanted to go dark to begin with. She put the color on my hair and my roots came out so much lighter than the rest of my hair she had to redye my roots. Now my roots and the rest of my hair don't match. She then told me because of the previous dye she couldn't lighten the rest of my hair. Well, since she does this for a living, shouldn't she have known that because I've previously dyed my hair that there would be other color that could prevent it from lightening. She shouldve explained to me that in order to lighten my hair she would've had to have put highlights in not just do an overall color. All of this and it costs me $130 for just a cut and bad color. Everyone else at the shop seemed please with their stylists so if you go make sure you don't go to the new girl Kat. And I will continue to look for a salon in MD who will actually do a good job. read more

I've been going to Hey Red! salon for several years now. Hey Red! is a very good salon to go to if you are in the local area. They have reasonable prices, good and carefully selected products, and nice ladies there. When I first moved to Maryland, I used to travel back into DC to go to my more cosmopolitan and pricey salons, but I'm very happy sticking with Hey Red! now. I can get a good haircut for half the price and Jane Iredale products, which they carry, are highly regarded. read more

For the price this place is sweet. It smells great. Products are really cool and everyone is very helpful. I came 20 minutes early and they saw me right away, after offering me a mini water of course. The bathroom comes with really cool free product that left my hands smelling and feeling fantastic. My hair washer was really cool, she had this spiky short hair with rocker boots and gave me very honest advice. No one is trying to take your money at this place. I called when they opened and was able to get in that afternoon for a shampoo and cut. They really made sure I wasn't going to get disappointed. They didn't make me feel bad about my damaged hair (major swimmer and curling iron user) and didn't push products on me. I tried them out for a cut (5 inches off! It could have been scary somewhere else.) and I plan to go back for color and to have all the layers taken up a little. Great place! After box dying my hair very dark for quite some time, I realized I couldn't take it any longer, wanted lighter hair, and made a somewhat impulsive decision to make an appointment here after seeing that it was so well reviewed. Doreen sat down and spoke with me about my hair - what I wanted, what I could expect given the condition of my hair, and made me feel very comfortable. My hair turned out better than I even expected it to, and I attribute this to her patience. She spent almost 3 hours on my hair. I went there today after reading the reviews. I called in the morning and they were able to squeeze me in. I was really just going for a trim and to modify my current cut. I echo what everyone else has said, but with one disappointment. The shampoo was very unsatisfying. Most salons do a somewhat decent job of doing a bit of a scalp massage with a shampoo, but my shampoo was definitely just a quick job to get me finished quickly. I will return, but not for a shampoo, which is disappointing, because that's such an important portion of the visit for me. read more

I have only been in the area for four months. After reading the reviews for this salon, I made an appointment. My appointment was with Michele. She was very sweet and did an awesome job! I cannot stress that enough! The staff at Hey Red! was extremely friendly and accommodating. One lady told me that I could change into a smock so that I wouldn't get any haircolor on my clothing. Then, I was draped with another wrap. I was offered beverages. The only negative was that a difficult customer came in (during my appointment) to see Michele for what should have been a quick hair trim that turned out to be a drawn-out episode of a cut and style. I took my niece here for her first haircut. We were def not the easiest for them to work with. The staff was super friendly, amazing with my young niece and just lovely people. I am really glad I found this gem of a salon. Everyone is very friendly and I noticed the stylists help each other. I felt very comfortable. Michelle did my hair as well as my daughter's hair too. Found Hey Red based on the great reviews this salon has on Yelp and am not disappointed. I've gotten my hair cut by both Meri and Doreen and both have been really great at listening to what I was looking for and suggesting new ideas, but totally not being pushy about it. Everyone is incredibly professional. The products they use are pretty good too, but they don't push them too hard. I like that they email appointment confirmations and reminders, but they also send out a few too many promotional emails for my taste (and unrelated products, for example, skin care announcements to hair cut clients). The only other negative thing I have to say is that the last time I came in, I was seated in the aisle rather than in your standard salon station. The place seemed busy, but seemed to be handling it ok, other than my haircut happening in an unconventional space, with a chair in front of a smallish mirror hanging on the wall. My SO also got his hair cut here, and while the price was a little steep for a men's haircut, was the same price as a women's, and took way longer than mine, his stylist (Angela?) did a great job, and I ended up taking home a handsome guy :) read more

I moved to MD about 6 months ago from Atlanta. My stylist in Atlanta, Peter, who was not only my stylist but a dear friend of over 10 years, always did a fantastic job with my hair for both color & cut, and is one of the top renowned stylists in the ATL. Needless to say, my next stylist had some pretty big shoes to fill! I am very pleased that I believe I have found my stylist & salon here in Laurel - Kat and Hey Red. I have been to see Kat twice. For my first appointment, Kat sat with me and we reviewed the colors and products that Peter had used on my hair, not only was Kat familiar with them, but she was able to recommend the color line to use on my hair that was offered at Hey Red that would have similar results. I walked out that day with a great color & cut (over 6" off!), and my next appointment scheduled. My next appointment was just as wonderful - I was relaxed and enjoyed the entire experience, and yet once again left with a great color & cut that I have received so many compliments for. I was ready for the holiday season & the parties! My next appointment is in a few weeks after the holidays, and I am looking forward to Kat working her magic on my hair yet once again. I have been going here for years! I have always had a wonderful experience. Michele is the only person I have trusted with my hair for at least 3-4 years, and as a result it is healthier and better looking than ever. I have had all varieties of highlights, all-over colors, eyebrow waxes, haircuts, formal styles-just about everything done here. The price is steeper than your average hair salon, but the quality and professionalism more than makes up for the difference. There was only one occasion my hair didn't turn out well (the fault of a stylist no longer employed there) and I was able to return a day later to have it remedied free of charge.
