I was very hopeful as I am in search of a new stylist / salon. The aesthetics of the salon were very welcoming; however, there was excessive tugging on my thinning hair. My hair was extremely tangled (more-so than normal) during the comb-out which led to excessive tugging. Smaller sections & rewetting the hair would have made the experience more enjoyable. I've tried this location twice, and decided not to come for the third appointment. I am accustomed to going to salons, but new to area and was certain this would be the place that would take care of me. Once I lock in and feel I can trust the stylist, I'm in a chair every two weeks. I booked with the same, "Artistic Director" person each time. Every-time, it felt cold and as if she couldn't be bothered since I wasn't getting a sew in. She didn't recall that in the first appointment, she told me to come back for a wash and go, for which I scheduled. However, when I finally got in her chair after my freshly washed hair was nearly completely air dried, she asked me what I was there for, then proceeded to tell me I don't have wash-n-go hair. She then upsold me on a twist out. s.n. Not sure what I've been doing this entire time, except washing my hair and going, but I digress. For a twist out that I was to be sent home still twisted, she had me under the drier for hours. I had to flag someone down to remind them I was still there. Prior to seeing the stylist, this salon feels like being in one of the old school Dominican salons (they are much better now). Feels like you're just one of many at the shampoo bowl, and then someone else blow dries (my first appointment was a silk press), and then the stylist. Frankly, I wasn't sure who would be doing my hair and felt some kind of way about so many different hands touching my hair. The upselling of hydration is ridiculous, and the protein services they sell on the website, is clearly not what they offer in salon. They looked at me like I was crazy when I told them what I booked for my appointment. Not to mention, didn't you look at my appointment services to prep? Why are you asking me?!! I don't do hair. I come to the salon because I expect that you know or are willing to learn my hair care needs. Needless to say, I've decided that it makes more sense for me to fly to the west coast every two months than spend money on an "artistic director" and salon who doesn't care about gaining repeat, loyal clients who love to tip for excellent service. Only, keeping their few favorites. I've heard from friends that they've referred people who have ended up having very poor experiences. So shameful and embarrassing. My favorite DMV salon for years! This was my go-to salon for blowouts, cuts, color and hydration treatments on my natural ethnic hair. I tried various stylists including Renee and various others who are no longer at the salon - all who were very talented and had their own specialties. My experience at CS Salon was everything!!!! I came across the CS Salon page on IG after my old stylist moved to LA a few months back. After wearing braids for almost 10 mths straight, I felt it was time to explore and find a new stylist and salon to make my home. After three months of stalking their IG page (lol) and also looking at other salon pages, my heart settled on Cole Stevens. I knew the Belle Point location would be ideal because I lived in the BWI region, so I decided to book an appointment with Renee. After reading Renee's bio, I knew she was the stylist I wanted based on the look and creativity I was looking for with my hair. Let me just tell y'all, this team did NOT disappoint me. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted and treated like a A-list client. The team was amazing; and can I just tell you how Renee slayed this hair of mine!!!! I went in for one look, but after she shared her knowledge and expertise regarding my hair we decided to go with a different look and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!! I will never go back!!! Renee was my stylist. I wasn't explained the price. I received a cut, semi permanent color, and hydration treatment which totaled a HUGE PRICE OF $300! I arrived @ 9 am & I didn't leave until 3 pm. I would not recommend anybody to go here unless you have all day & want to be severely overcharged. She was rough with my head. I had to keep asking her questions. I explained I've had heat damage & I did the big chop. I really haven't been to a salon. She didn't give me ANY answers. For $300, I should have walked away feeling like a Queen. I walked away feeling robbed. The professional lacked, overcharged, took over 3 hours, and roughly handed. read more

The Greenbelt location didn't have the entrance I expected, it's a hidden gem within a townhouse but is professional inside. I had Renee, service was great, she was great, my hair has 3 types and I did the big chop myself, needed it fixed. I showed her a picture and the results were exactly what I asked for. She was meticulous and it showed in the results, I walked out looking fabulous. Four stars because I couldn't reproduce the same results myself. She used a mouse that made my hair crunchy so I didn't order it, I would've preferred it soft and curly, but fairly I should have said that ahead. The tips of my hair also still had some permed hair left, she did tell me that she left the tips to achieve the style I wanted, but I wish she would've have asked me, I would have preferred that she had cut all the perm out though as the tips frustrated me later in styling it myself. The other thing is this is a very nice salon, and I walked out with an unexpected $150 bill, I smiled and paid because I should have asked some questions ahead, but for that price, maybe they should have told me ahead? I will go back if follow up appointments are less money, since she reproduced exactly what I asked, I know now what I want to ask for next time. :) read more

Absolutely love this place! I am relaxer free, but not chemical free. This salon specializes in natural hair. I've been several times and seen 3 different stylists. A 3 are phenomenal! My main stylist is Detra. Detra can cut, color, style and is quick! Sylvia was my most recent stylist because I needed my hair done eeeeearly in the morning. I arrived at 6:50 and was done by 8:15. Sylvia was quick and styled the heck out of my long blonde hair. I asked for loose curls and she blew it out of the water! I felt like I was hitting the runway!! Found this saloon after seeing the great results of a natural colleagues silk press! I started with her stylist, Detra. She was great for styling but I felt she had her preference (long term clients she flowed better with, curtains times she preferred to not take clients after) and she was cold on all my 5+ encounters. I also experienced 2 last minute cancellations with her at the worst timings (job interview & engagement photos). I lost interest for Cole Steven's till I finally sat in Brittany's chair (yes I'm smizing)! Yes yes yes.... she is bubbly... really bubbly LOL and at 1st I thought it wouldn't be a match for my quiet temperament but... I was wrong. 3X now and I've been my encouraged to do more than my usual (natural silk press). I'm budget conscious and I tend to do my own deep conditioning, steaming (yes I have a steamer!!!), protein treatment etc... but w/Brit and her down to earth style of relaying hair care i find it easier to engage, ask question and actually consider products/treatments (remember I'm a budget person so I can't say additional treatments will be a new norm... lol). And talk about attention to detail....! Shhhhh dont tell her, but her attention to my scalp health (scalp lifting, firm shampooing, patting my scalp like 30X for build-up) is my #1 reason I like her. I regret writing this, but I hope it will be a warning for any naturalista who wants to maintain their coils and kinks. I came here to get my natural 4C hair done for a special occasion. The service was great and I felt pampered!!! I came twice in one month and requested their blow dry and style with hydration service. For three years, I had not used ANY heat (not even a blow dryer) or been to a salon to do my hair. I felt that I was going to one of the BEST salons in the area though, so I didn't worry. My hair was/is dense and thick and very coily- 4C afro. I was under the impression that the health/curls of my hair could be maintained after only one or two visits, so I didn't worry. Sadly I was mistaken. The first warning was when I was told during washing that my hair wasn't 'heat trained'. I mentioned that I didn't plan to wear my hair straight on a consistent basis. I was just doing something different for a special occasion. The stylist (a Director who has been there for many years and who I paid extra money to see) asked how do I usually wear my hair. I replied that I usually wore some kind of natural twists. Well the pic should speak for itself. Only two visits later and my hair is now Heat damaged (or what they like to refer to as Heat Trained). I believe the stylist used several passes of the iron to get my hair bone-straight. And now, my hair wont fully coil back up after several washes . I am very sad and disappointed, but I know that I took a risk with applying heat to my hair. If you are naturally curly, and want to stay that way, or maintain your kinks/coils, sit down and speak to the stylist about their philosophy on heat training. Make sure they use only a warm blow dryer and iron. Tell them you don't need or want bone slick straight hair! Grow a third eye behind your neck or bring a friend remind them not to pass the iron more than one time through each strand of hair. Good luck! read more

Ok my second attempt to get my hair done..first attempt the person does not do natural hair..referred me to patricia who thankfully squeezed me in. I decided to go from dark brown hair to medium brown with blonde pop highlights in the from at this salon. I was very vocal about what I wanted and kept asking questions throughout the process before the hairstylist was silent. I am a natural curly hair girl so I wanted a medium brown color and a few blonde highlights on my front curls. I did not even get close to what I wanted. For one I was overcharged, ended paying $520 dollars and it wasn't worth it. In the end I went back to complain and voice my opinion I did not receive one sorry. I was charged for a balayage yet my hair has streaks of highlights all over my head with no transition into the blonde. There are patches of orange/yellow and areas in the back of my head that don't even have color. One side of my head the highlights are very light than the other side, the highlights are no where close to being balanced. I'm completely disappointed, angry, lied to, and etc. Please go to a professional salon that knows what they are doing with transitioning to blonde and how to properly color/highlights hair. Diane did the first process of my hair which was part of their jingle highlights which is completely a scam and then Johannie did the second part which is the highlights, where I was charged for a balayage but received highlights all over my head. I really wanted to like this place.... It just didn't work out for me. Let me first start by saying that, I have natural hair, and I did have some breakage and I communicated this with the stylist when we first spoke. My hair (when straightened) is a relatively short bob that is approximately chin length in the back and shorter on the sides. I told the stylist that I run, and that I wanted something that would be easy to keep up between salon visits and that I knew it was time for a trim/cut. She asked me about my highlights and suggested a demi-color to even the color out and I said ok. FAST FORWARD: As she began cutting my hair, I asked (a couple of times) about the back of my hair. As I saw the hair being cut shorter and shorter I started to get concerned with the length of the back and how it would look after running, etc. I asked her did she think it would be better if we cut off the back, and she said no, just play it by ear, and if anything, just relax the back. She hadn't started bumping my hair with the flat iron yet, so I was still hoping that once there was a little bit of curl there, the "style" would sort of come together, but it never did. Once finished, I was so disappointed. I absolutely HATED my hair. I don't even think she asked me if I LIKED my hair! I walked to the front fighting back tears to proceeded to pay $145 for a hairstyle that I HATED. I could not tell the slightest difference with the color... it pretty much looked the same to me. And actually with the way is now cut, the highlights now look WORSE in the back than before the cut. The cut, while someone else may have loved it, I could not stand it... Now, in regards to tips, I feel that a service was performed, time was invested, so I was still going to tip, even though I was dissatisfied, so I left and went to the store to grab some cash because their credit card machine does not have the capacity to add a tip. I walked down the stairs, got in my car and burst into tears. Now, I understand that my hair had breakage, but NOT THAT MUCH BREAKAGE! My hair is now really too short for me to do anything with, and I probably won't be able to keep up with it myself. I have been going to (another) salon every two weeks, and they have always been able to take my hair and style it in such a way that I felt good walking out of the salon. (AND it was manageable when I left). Not this time.... this time all I could do is cry. I felt as if I looked worse walking out than I did going in (and I had a scarf on my head going in which says a lot). The guy at the front desk did offer me a refund for the cut, so I just took the $30 refund and left. Total spent $145+10 tip = $155. Refund amount $30. Total amount paid to leave feeling and looking like crap $125. At the salon's defense, I will say that I did see quite a few ladies walk out with their hair looking fantastic... Just not me. It hasn't been 3 hours yet, and the back of my hair has already begun to do just what I thought it would do... Begin to curl up and look like an afro. Anyway, I've made an appointment to have a weave done (at another salon) on Monday to try and fix the damage of today. I'm really bummed about it because I have really been avoiding having a full weave, but now I'm going to have to go right back to the very thing that I had been trying to get away from... AND spend unnecessary money to do so! Maybe this place will work for you, but it just didn't live up to all of the hype for me. I have long since learned the hard way that you pay for what you get when it comes to beauty and hair care. From cheap service, and cheap hair to long wait times and nasty a sugah sugah attitudes. Who has the time and the patience for that? I have been a happy customer of thee Cole Stevens Salon for about six years. When I started I saw Detra frequently, I have seen Ms. Diane for cuts, and thee Ms Michelle for color (chiiiiiiiile). Now, I simply go in to receive color from Michelle. No matter who you see, the work here is awesome, and you will leave with your hair bouncing and behaving. This salon is all about healthy, natural hair. I remember when I first became a client, I still had a relaxer, and wanted color. Ms. Michelle made it clear that I could do one or the other, but not both. I mean who wants dry, brittle hair, that beaks? No bueno. I totally get it now. Cue Detra, she brought my hair back to life, after the many years of relaxing, and it is so healthy. I was scared, as my hair was already long and I sho nuff didn't want to do the big chop (y'all, I have a big head) so she just cared for it and slowly cut it 'till all the relaxer is gone. Whew! I've been relaxer free for about five years now. Michelle gives me the best color ever, to which I always get compliments! You see, what people fail to realize is that she is a "colorist" she is someone who specifically does color. She does not curl. She does not cut. She colors. That's it. Therefore she knows her stuff. There is no Jazzing ruby red (remembering those bad experiences YIKES), Clariol bottles and the like. She simple creates, so if she says that something won't look good on you. Trust. She knows. There is something about the way that she can match your hair color with your skin tone, and place the highlights in the most perfect of spots. It's awesome. Whenever I see her, I tell her to have her way and BAM!!! This girl looks good! #heyboo So is it expensive, hell yes! But at this point, you definitely deserve it, you're worth it, and you soo pay for what you get. Just go. Try it. read more

I've been coming here for years actually. I show up on time and have spent a fortune in tips. That being said, don't expect any better treatment when they suddenly cancel your appointments with no or unfavorable mitigations. I have also lost count of all the times I've been asked to move appointment times I scheduled weeks in advance (so why even book in advance? This ain't Comcast!) Let's just start by saying I am never satisfied with anyone doing my natural hair. I have been natural on two separate occasions and had my hair RUINED by the Dominican salons that I was going to to get blowouts. I cut my hair and restarted my natural hair journey. I had my hair straightened for the first time in 10 months by Tamara! She is AMAZING and the moisture steam treatment helped. Usually my hair would revert back to being kinky (I'm a 4B/4C, so it seems inevitable) immediately but it stayed straight for 6 days and she didn't even put that much heat on it. She jus effectively used it. The salon is clean, classy, and comfortable. A little over priced but I did get a trim, treatment, blow out and style which came to 100. I'm pretty much done giving this salon a shot. It's too inconsistent & I don't ever walk out feeling like a million bucks, even after spending a ton of money on what's really basic haircare. My latest experience that put a nail in the coffin was on Labor Day. I called a week prior and asked the guy who was their best person for doing natural hair. I was very explicit that I wasn't fussy but wanted someone to do a good trim on my natural hair, wash and maybe add some curls. He recommended Koren. Cool. The day of my appointment I didn't realize they were having a back to school special and it got real packed real quick. My stylist, it turns out came from their DC location to backfill. Ok, no problem since she was very sweet and attentive for the most part. The issue came after I got home because I realize that she was juggling a bunch of clients and really wasn't giving my hair the care it needed. But even before then let me say I got total sticker shock when I was charged $150 for a trim ($45), hydration ($25) and flexirods ($80). But I'll eat that because I should have known better. After all, this salon is known to charge out the butt. Back to my point. So when I left the salon I noticed my hair was a little dry but didn't sweat it at that time. In hindsight Koren didn't use anything besides a buttload of mousse and my hair also needs oil & moisturizer, which I did tell her. So by morning my hair was crunchy AF, and I realized the cut she did was terrible -- as in choppy, uneven and not tailored. I went back and forth about whether I should go back to have them fix it and finally decided to because $150 is a lot of money to be unhappy. My repair appointment was just as bad. It was with the owner, who I can say is very professional and does want her clients happy. However, she proceeded to take my hair even lower than I expected (like you can see my scalp low) and I walked outta there once again feeling disappointed. She too used a ton of mousse and some product that I mentioned my hair didn't take well to. I didn't argue though because at this point I realize it's futile. My cut was still uneven a day later btw. Some stylists just don't listen and always think they know more than you do about your hair. Anyways I just know better now. I'm learning the hard way that salons around here just can't/won't do right by me. So my advice for anyone thinking about giving them a chance is this: If money is an object, ask them for pricing on EVERYTHING before you set your ass in that chair. Also, don't get any major style on your first visit, like a big chop. Do something simple, like a wash and set. If you can afford to, try out different stylists to get a feel for who works for you. I think they have some really good stylists. I've just never found one I can go to. Gisele did my original cut and it was OK but I was a little offended when she made what I considered an offensive reference to my hair being relaxed just because it was so straight. In fact I haven't had a relaxer since 2013 and it was straight because I was flat ironing it. I also had Candace way back when and liked her but think she either quit or went to their DC salon, which is too far for me. So to sum it up, Cole Stevens, I quit you! I hadn't had my hair straightened in a year and I wanted to try a new salon. Two of my best friends both go to Cole Stevens and suggested the same stylist so I gave it a try. This salon is amazing! If you want to be relaxed while getting your hair done, this is the place to go. The woman who shampooed my hair was amazing! My hair and scalp felt so clean. I went to Rachel for my blow dry and style. She was amazing! My hair is natural and very curly. Sometimes it's hard to get straight. Rachel got it straight with just the blow dryer and then used the flat iron to style it. I will definitely be going back! read more

Today was my first time patronizing Cole Stevens, and I am beyond satisfied with my both my haircut, and the overall experience! When as soon as I walked in to my appointment Diane greeted me with a big smile, and made feel super welcome. She asked questions about the haircut I was looking to achieve, and despite coming into the salon straightened also questioned if I sometimes wear my hair curly in order to provide the best cut. Throughout the entirety of my time there she engaged in conversation, and provided lots of words of wisdom (probably unbeknownst to her.) Overall she just has an amazingly uplifting spirit! Let me first start by saying this salon is pricy but it's worth the investment. I would suggest to ask if anything has an addition cost!!! I loved the way my hair came out. I think they suggest for everyone to receive a hydration treatment which is an additional 25$. African American hair needs additional moisture do to our curly hair so the treatment is worth it. I've been super self-conscious of my hair for awhile (two+ years of pandemic hair combined with pregnancy and postpartum hormone changes), but the stylists here were so helpful and complimentary. They made me feel very comfortable and confident with a new cut and style that suit me. The owner stepped in at one point and was just amazing to work with - she was so warm and welcoming! Intro: salon is in an unexpected office building park, but that's not a negative. Spacious and nice looking interior. I didn't realize this was a natural hair salon, and I'm texlax about 3-4x a year....whooops. Consult: I appreciate the time that was taken to consult me about the impact of doing color on previously relaxed hair. Since it had been about 3 months since my last, we decided it be okay. Process: she did a Balayage which turned out beautifully. It did get a little awkward for me when I was told that my hair is "like straw" bc of relaxer, when it's not, i just have dry hair period. I've been natural before and it was even more dry. It's been over a month now and I've had zero breakage, so I greatly appreciate her for doing a fantastic careful job. $$$: I spent about $100 MORE than what I thought I would. I literally walked out of there in a daze after I paid. It was unwelcoming and the stylist who I had.... her name was Bianca... was cold as ice. No conversation about how to keep and maintain healthy hair. The only benefit was that I liked the tapered cut. This salon even automatically charged my tip which made me mad. I went in for highlights and she colored my entire head a color I would have never thought to get. Its awesome!!!!!!! I have to admit I wasn't liking it at first but once it started coming together I saw the vision she has. Diane was a blessing to my hair. After I brought this to the management's attention I was told that there was nothing that they could do about it because they haven't been able to update their website due too covid. I've come here a couple times and always like how my hair turns out. However there are several things that will keep me from coming back again. 1. The loud gospel music. I'm religious and enjoy this type of music but it is entirely too loud. I hope to relax when getting my hair done and this isn't possible with the upbeat music blasting. 2. The stylists speak amongst each other in Spanish and do no engage the clients. Each time I come here my stylist had not talked to me AT ALL during the service. They just tap you on the shoulder and point when they want something or jerk your head down. I've been getting my hair done my whole life. A simple "hold your head down" would work. I wasn't even greeted this morning when I came in. 3. They don't accept tips on card. No one has cash all the time. I simply don't tip here because of this. 4. They push the hydration treatment way too hard. Stating my hair is excessively dry and unmanageable and it won't turn out nicely without it. Oddly enough it always does and has for the last 20 years. If I do agree to get it I'm left under the steamer entirely too long while they socialize. 5. The stylist burned the hell out of my head several times today. My wincing and jumping each stroke weren't enough. Maybe if she wasn't chatting so much she could better focus on where the HOT HAIR tool is in relation to my body? 6. I searched yelp to see what stylist to book. I booked the highly reviewed folks. Arrive and they tell me I'm seeing someone else. Without consulting me. Being that each person has a different price point and expertise I'm not okay with driving 30 mins here to get a stylist I didn't request. read more

Jackie, charged me $230, a 63 years old women, for a wash, trim and flexi rod. $100 for a trim, $100 for flexi rods, and $30 for a hydrate, and was told there is no difference between a trim and a cut style. UPDATE: the stylist I went to there left sometime in 2015. So, I can't vouch for the environment of the salon after that time. This is my earlier review: I wish I had discovered Cole Stevens YEARS ago. I am always satisified with my hair and have personable and capable stylists when I go there. And, regardless of whether I've been at the Greenbelt or Eastern Market location, I have NEVER seen anyone leave any of the Cole Stevens stylists' chairs subpar. :-) Now (stepping upon my soap box), I have to say that dysfunctional salon behavior has been a "norm" among too many Black stylists/salons for too long. And I partially blame the clients for allowing their standards to be so low and not requiring these stylists to do better. I'm SO over: 1) theTRIPLE booking of clients, resulting in my spending easily 6-8 hours in a salon (and wondering whether "I" should be the one getting paid that day); 2) showing up as early as 30 minutes for an appointment, yet not being seen until 45 minutes AFTER my appointment was scheduled to start (and the person still waiting before me had an appointment an hour before mine!); 3) having some ghetto/tacky stylist stop in the midst of doing my hair so he/she can "hook up" his/her friend, who obviously didn't have an appointment (but looked like she needed easily two stylists to work on her hair); and/or 4) having a stylist snap at or talk rudely or down to me; Of course, the list goes on. I'm sure I've stepped on some toes with that one. But if the shoe fits...beat yourself upside the head with it and THEN wear it, because you have NO business finding dysfunctional salon behavior acceptable, whether you are a stylist or a client. :-) No exceptions. So, it is refreshing to find a salon that not only focuses on simultaneously improving the health of natural hair and making it look good, but one that seems to have something too few Black salons have learned: PROFESSIONALISM and RESPECT for one's customers. I recently went to Cole Stevens a few days ago as it was my first time in a salon in about 5 years. Because I read such great reviews on here and on other natural hair chat boards, I thought I'd give it a try. REASONS TO TRY COLE STEVENS: - Staff was very nice, knowledgeable, accommodating, reassuring and patient - All questions I had were answered - Your hair will be nothing short of fabulous when you leave (at least that's my experience) - The salon is organized, clean and professional - They have little tip envelopes that I thought were so cute - I was given water and pretzels while I waited, which was a nice touch - They don't charge extra for thick and/or long hair (which is a super plus in my book) THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SCHEDULING/PRIOR TO YOUR APPT: - Depending on what you're calling for and when, it may be difficult to speak to someone. In my experience in calling Cole Stevens (Greenbelt) I've left messages only for them to not be returned, so you'll need to call back if you leave a message with a person or on the voicemail. This may not be an issue for some, but if you have a crazy busy schedule (like myself), this can be frustrating to keep having to follow up. - If being greeted as soon as you walk in is a big deal to you, try to be a bit flexible. When I entered the reception area it took a few minutes before being greeted/acknowledged as there was a lot of activity at the receptionist desk, but I was so happy to be getting my hair professionally done that it was no biggie. They're REALLY nice!! :) ****WHAT YOU MUST KNOW WHEN SCHEDULING A TREATMENT**** - Before you get a TREATMENT (or any service for that matter), ask your stylist (preferably more than once) what the price includes. The price on the website and what they may tell you is just the price of the TREATMENT (in my experience the keratin blowout - $125), AND NOT THE TOTAL COST OF YOUR HAIR BEING DONE. A trim is $15 which is reasonable and I knew that wasn't included, but you will be charged an ADDITIONAL $50 for a flat iron/style. Unfortunately, this is not communicated on the website, it wasn't mentioned during my consultation or even when I confirmed the price with my stylist before getting my hair washed. So if you're looking to get a keratin blowout, trim and style be prepared to pay $190 and NOT the $125 on the website. All in all I had an okay experience. My hair looked great when I walked out, but I didn't enjoy being misled especially with regard to pricing. I have no problems in paying for services but something so costly I would've preferred to know the total cost prior to services being rendered. So I'm on the fence as to whether I'd return. I'm expecting a call back from the manager/owner, so hopefully they'll change my mind, as I do love the outcome of my hair With all things considered, I would recommend Cole Stevens with the above reservations. read more

Anyone that knows me knows I believe in second chances and that I am willing to pay top dollar for quality. Quality is what I believed I would find upon seeking out Cole Stevens Salon. Unfortunately, I paid $125 for hair coloring that did not represent what I requested event after a second chance to get it right. Time and money was wasted at Cole Stevens. I have never had a stylist tell me how I want my hair or color especially if I am paying. Respectfully, when a client says they want red violet, they show you a picture and the are patient even after you the stylist does not do what they ask/plead. Missing the mark is an understatement. Prior to getting color at Cole, I had zero color or chemicals in my hair thus it was very healthy and free of damage thus a proper lift and color of my request could of occurred if it had been applied/attempted. My first visit was on 3/29/2014. I had scheduled at hair appointment with Michelle at 1pm for a full head of color, red violet aka Red Wine. When I arrived 5 minutes prior to my appointment and my hair was washed and I sat with a wet head for 55 minutes. I was asked numerously if I was there to get highlights and told that is what I needed (what? this should of been a sign). I kindly stated no, and explained that I consulted with Michele prior and wanted a full head of red violet color. I was at the salon from 1pm to 645pm and I was never finished. The coloring did not actually take place until 2:36pm. Following color I was deep conditioned and transferred upstairs and told to wait for Mimi although I did not even know who she was had never with her prior/during my stay at the salon. At 5:33pm after waiting upstairs for Mimi since 4:23pm with a shower cap on my head I went to the reception lady who seemed aloof about my situation. She told me Mimi had another client and I would be next so I waited. At 6:28pm, I still had not been seen therefore I opted to paid and leave the salon unfinished for $150 ($125 for the color which I could not see due to a wet head & $25 for deep condition). The salon was supposed to be closing 28 minutes prior so I did not see how Mimi would even get me in and out in less than 30 minutes. Now I am "Queen of Patience", because the entire time, I was polite, calm, paid but really I was hot because 5-6 hours at a salon for color, really? When I got home I took off the shower cap, twisted my hair and allowed it to air dry. In the morning my hair was nothing RED but a brownish orange color. The following day, I wrote a professional message and expressed that the service rendered was unacceptable and unprofessional especially as a new client and paying the fees that I had. The customer service received was excellent and a new appointment was booked (good job AJ & Nicole!). The second visit was on 4/2/2014. I arrived 10 minutes prior to my appointment and Michele apologized for Friday and explained things were crazy on Friday. She opted to fix the color free of charge but did not listen to what I wanted stating it would not look right. Since when do you tell a client what they want when they pay you and provided a visual of what they want? Brick Red is not Burgundy Red. A full head of color is a full head of color. I never asked for highlights but now I understand that they were insisted because they are listed as a higher price. It took all I had to leave with my desires unmet, money lost and time wasted. Jackie did provide good natural hair advice, thanks love. But everything else, total epic fail. You know, this is so sad and my first ever poor review. I loathe to say anything negative about a business (especially an African American business) as I strive to look for strengths but this was just SO HARD. I went to the mall in Pentagon City and while there was referred to a Thai lady totally fixed me. I was humbled and shocked that an Asian woman knew my hair and did a much better job. She did so well I tipped her $15 on top of the correction color service she provided. I've been here a handful of times. This is my third time being natural, and I had been natural for right at a year when I first started coming here in the fall. *Pros* -Nice location that's easy to find, clean, and has free parking! -Numerous stylists, and availability to fit a wide range of schedules. One stylist I saw comes in at 5 am to accommodate her NOVA clients. This is great for me! -They offer package specials from time to time to help offset the cost. Mind you, I still spent well over $600 in 5 or 6 visits with a package. Trims, hydration, and any other treatment pushed on you is still extra-and adds up. -You won't be waiting all day. I only had to wait on one occasion, which happened to be right before Thanksgiving. -Your hair will turn out beautifully. *Cons* -It's still very expensive. I felt like they were always pushing extras on me. I have very tightly coiled 4b hair that is always dry. Even though my hair is dry, it is healthy since I had not had it blown out AT ALL for the entire year that I've been natural this third time. So, no heat damage, no medical issues, etc... I budgeted for hydration treatments each time, but why are you pushing this $100 scalp treatment, on top of all the other extras? No thanks. -I was told that by getting the hydration treatments, my blowout would last longer. So, I made sure to get them each time. Unfortunately, depending on the stylist, I only got 3 days to one week out of a $100+ service. Party foul. This was also during the winter, so it's not like it was super humid. -Sometimes, the shampoo girls can be a little gruff and unhappy to be there. Doesn't make for a relaxing "spa like" experience when you're dropping over a $100 to be there. -Two different stylists asked me why was I coming there when I live in Alexandria. So, you're telling me that you don't want my business then??? Obviously, there's a lack of natural hair salons in NOVA. But, don't worry, I will find one that does want my $$$$. -****This is the main con that will have me not returning as a regular client. The only person doing my hair was a cole stevens stylist. As previously mentioned, I never had blow outs before, and I got the hydration treatment with each service. I only got my hair blown out once a month starting in September, and I have very thick, healthy hair. Tell me why on my last visit, I happened to see Meme instead of my usual stylist, and she immediately told me my hair was broken off in the back. Excuse me!?!? The only people I've been seeing are YOU people. So, she recommended I not get my hair blown out again, and let it grow back in. I thanked her, paid her, and marched my tushy downstairs to get some answers. I tell her that Meme says my hair is broken off in the back. She nonchalantly responded, "oh yeah, it is starting to break off. Meme is good for a natural style." That's it. You mean you couldn't tell me that when you were breaking my hair off the last 2-3 visits I was here? I don't apply any heat to my hair at home just to be extra careful. So, I finished up my $300+ package, and that's that. It's now April, and my hair has finally grown back a bit in the back. read more

Burned my hair. Again. Like...a LOT. About 2 years worth of curls are now permanently straight. I even made it a point to ask her before any heat touched my head to make sure she put some kind of protectant on it, and she flippantly brushed me off, claiming she already did. I'm pissed. My last visit to Cole Stevens wasn't my first. And previously, I'd been satisfied. Blake is great. As is Jamel (and funny). And I hate to post this review, but I really just had to tell it ... if for no other reason than I. was. so. completely. SHOCKED. by what I walked out with. I had sort of a faux hawk thing going on and wanted to taper the back down to be even with the sides. After she started, I asked if she could also just very mildly trim the top of my hair. But there was clearly some sort of disconnect. Even if I concede THAT though, which I think would be gratuitous, how does a disconnect lead to this? (See pic) It's one thing to get a cut you didn't ask for (a good cut, but just not what you wanted) but for a Cole Stevens stylist to do THIS (see pic)-- I just don't understand. I cried in the chair, I cried at the reception stand, I cried on the way home, I cried at home, and couldn't sleep part of the night wondering what I was going to do. Luckily, I tracked down the stylist I used to see in my 20s, and she made it all right. So grateful for her! I truly have nothing personal against this stylist, who may very well be a wonderful person, but the last thing I think you wanna say to a visibly sad and anxious client after you've botched a haircut is, "What do you want to do now?" or "I'm scared to even do anything now." I suggested blowing it out, so that the cut would be precise (bc I don't wear afro styles; I'll pull down, rake, and define as much as possible), but I was told you don't blow out natural hair for cuts if you plan to wear it curly. Thing is ... that's just not true. Other stylist-- at that same salon (and others)--have blown out my natural hair for cutting. What's a hit for some (and CS is for many) is a bust for others. I want to make this as short as possible but I love everything about Cole Stevens! I've been searching for a good salon that specializes in natural hair since I moved to the area last year. After a number of bad haircuts I've finally found a new salon home! For most of the summer I've been wearing weave and braids to protect my hair and grow out previous haircuts. It was time to take my braids out so I went on a search for a new stylist and came across Cole Stevens on Yelp and the reviews seemed great so I decided to give them a try. That was the best hair decision I've made recently. I was styled by Milan and she was wonderful! A few minutes after checking in with the receptionist Milan came out to give me a quick consultation and see what I wanted done. She suggested I try the hydration treatment and let me tell you it's the bomb. I needed my haircut and before doing so she walked me through everything she was going to do just to make sure that we were on the same page. I love my new haircut and the hydration treatment has my hair feeling silky smooth. Not only does my hair look good but Cole Stevens's customer service is on point. I made sure I booked a second appointment before leaving. read more
