We were getting quotes for solar installers through the website called energysage.com when I saw a article in our power company's magazine for HESolar. I like to support local companies, so I decided to contact HESolar to get a free quote. I went to their website and filled out their short questionnaire and then waited to see if we would get a response. In a short period of time, we received a phone call from Derrick to schedule our free consultation. I asked him what information he needed from us (energy usage over the last year) and I sent him the information that he asked for. When our meeting time came around, Derrick was very polite and took the time to answer all of my questions about the various solar systems that they offered as well as all of my inverter questions and questions about the different solar batteries that are available. At the end of the consultation, Derrick informed me that he would have proposals to us within the hour which he did. He informed us that if we wanted to move forward on the project, all we would need to do is request a site survey so he could finalize our configuration. There quote where in line with the ones we were receiving from the energysage.com website. At the site survey, they took the time to explain not only how the proposed system was configured and why. But they also answered my questions about the pros and cons of using different inverters, batteries, panels, and what the maintenance would be of these units. They also asked me what my future plans where (energy wise) so that they could better understand what I needed our solar system to do for me going forward. After the site survey, Derrick emailed us the revised quote for the changes that we made to the proposal based on our future needs along with pricing. We decided the next day after reviewing all of the other quotes compared with the one from HESolar and decided that we would go with HESolar's quote. Derrick then explained the equipment lead times and basically gave us a time frame that he expected that they would install our system. They told us that their system would be a "turn key" project and they were right. They basically took care of everything for us. They handled dealing with our HOA. They handled dealing with our power company and scheduling the different inspections they would need to do and the various fees that were required. When it came to the install date, they gave us about 2 weeks heads up. They came on the installation date and started the install process. About 3pm that day, the rain started to pour down. This was totally out of their control. It was scheduled to rain the following day so we agreed that they would come back the day after. When the rain stopped, they came back and finished the job. They then scheduled the last inspection needed for us to sell back our excess energy back to the power company for the following week. The only problem we had was that after the install, our dryer breaker kept tripping every time we tried to run it. I called Derrick and he sent out an electrician to look at it and they replaced the faulty breaker. After we had our "PTO" inspection, they called me and told us how to turn that feature on. We have had no problems with our new solar system (panels and batteries) and I we have already started recommending HESolar to our friends. In the recent ice storm 2/2023 even though the grid wen down several times, we never even had to reset the oven or microwave clocks! EnPhase is an awesome technology than anticipates impending storms and the application tells us how efficient each solar panel is as well as letting us know how much electricity we are exporting/importing and battery function (charging or discharging) I cannot recommend a company more than HE Solar. The good news is these guys are prompt and thorough. They were able to get me an estimate in less than a week and they were thorough about what it included and what my options were. They were not so good about the payout as no matter how I sliced it it was looking like 20 years to do so. Can you imagine waiting 20 years to reach the break even point? Look honey! We started the bid process for Solar at the beginning of the year. Looking at multiple companies, Derrick came in and was competitive on his bid. Derrick came over and gave his presentation, and was well prepared. He had a proposed design ready based on satellite images, and my electric bill. The initial conversation was what I was looking for, what they could do for me without having to rehash any details. I personally did quite a bit of research on panels, and was pleased with the model presented. I gave the bid to Hesolar as attention to detail is important to me. When you have someone working on your house, you want them to treat it like it is their own. The communication up to the install was great from their office. Keeping you informed on all the statuses of the paperwork with the city and HOA. They handled submitting to everyone themselves, and was incredibly turnkey for me. There were a lot of things I didn't even consider, like where the lines from the panels go. They did an excellent job running everything through the attic, and the install looks incredibly clean. They went above and beyond and even painted the line going down into the box on the side of the house to match the brick. I couldn't have asked for a better looking install. Update Dec. 29, 2019: After a few months using our new solar system and evaluating the power output and storage, we decided to add 12 Panasonic solar panels @340W and one extra Tesla PowerWall 2 battery. Again, Derrick listened to our needs and provided the most elegant solution for the install. Since we suspected our storage needs will increase during the first install with 2 PowerWall 2 Tesla batteries, the Hoffman brothers had the foresight to build the battery concrete slab for 3 batteries. Made it easy to install the 3rd one. Furthermore, our original SolarEdge inverter would clip at around 10KW production or so while we were producing up to 14KW. Derrick had a great solution, he offered to swap the original inverter for a bigger new one for a reasonable price rather than wasting the one we had. We now rarely have to depend on the grid (PEC) and once we have 100% battery storage power during the day, we can make it on batteries overnight easily. We highly recommend the Hoffman brothers, Derrick and Eric and their professional crew. As usual, they came by on time, they had all the necessary material and equipment needed, did a stellar install and thorough cleanup at the end. We wanted to install solar panels on our roof, and while doing research on installers and different solar systems I met Eric Hoffman and Derrick Hoffman at the Renewable Energy Roundup at Fredericksburg. I was impressed by them at the Roundup and invited them to provide a quote. I also contacted several other solar companies, and obtained 4 different quotes. After reviewing them all, I had HEsolar modify their quote to upgrade their proposal to a 6kW system. Even after enlarging the system their quote was the most cost competitive. If you look through a bolt hole in our solar array, you will be able to see out the bolt hole at the other end of the array (about 40 feet) -- that's how exacting HE Solar is. All of the structural parts in the array align exactly. I had the array of 30 put in two years ago this October. During that time, our electric bill has been cut dramatically. During Spring and Fall, we pay no electric bill at all. In Winter we pay about 25% of what we did before, and in the summer we pay around 60% what we did before. My husband and I got 4 quotes for a solar installation. (One of them, if you can believe this, didn't come to the house, but instead used Google Earth to look at the installation site. Needless to say, we nixed them.) From the start, Eric and Derrick were impressive. None of the other installers interviewed were master electricians. They installed a 6 kw system and since it was activated (December 2014), we have almost always carried a credit on our electric bill. To get Austin Energy to pay a portion, we did some duct sealing and added insulation in the attic after an energy audit. The Hoffman brothers were very patient with me (I had lots of questions and don't understand much about electricity despite the fact that my husband is an electrical engineer.) For our system, we chose Enphase microinverters because of potential shading issues and also because we have panels on two sides of our roof for optimum output. This system allows monitoring of the panels' output through their web interface. The panels are Solar World 260W. (At the time of our installation, they were the highest wattage available.) HE Solar gave us the best bid per kw hour BY FAR. We're very pleased with the installation. We've recommended them to a few neighbors. HEsolar was recommended to me by a friend so I included them in the handful of companies that I researched. The Sales Director John was very patient and responsive with my barrage of questions. Two main reasons I ultimately chose HEsolar: 1. Their background as master electricians and knowing that the Hoffman family has been providing electrical services in the Central Texas area for over 35 years. That means if the the federal tax incentives for installing solar panels goes away and the installations of and demand for solar panel systems drops, Derrick and Eric will still be around, even if HEsolar isn't. 2. They use SunPower solar panels which is a more efficient panel. That means less panels on the roof which leaves more roof space for expansion in the future. I signed the sales bid in early January. HEsolar made it very easy and took care all of the paper work with Oncor, who delivers the electricity in my area. I just had to digitally sign the various pieces of paperwork as it became available. Installation started 5 weeks later and took two days. And then more waiting on Oncor. The panels were turned on 3.5 weeks later. YAY! The panels have been up and running for 3 months now. There was one small issue with a bad fuse that Derrick promptly responded to. I've also had some monitoring issues because of the distnace of the SolarEdge gateway from the inverter. They really couldn't be any further apart. HEsolar installed a signal repeater and that seems to have resolved the issue. In this modern day, I'm not a phone person and one of the things I really like about HEsolar is they are very responsive through email. I would have hard time doing business with someone who isn't. It's been over a month since HESolar installed 32 solar panels on our roof, I couldn't be happier with the process - from initial contact through to installation and follow up. There are a lot of solar companies out there now, and I really don't appreciate the pushy/salesy business models many of them have. They may install a fine system, but door to door and sending salesmen to house with big fancy pamphlets seems like a lot of overhead built into pricing. HESolar was by far the best formal quote I received on a $/Kilowatt-hour produced. I also spoke directly to the owners, not sales people, on initial contact. The owners were also on site for pre-install inspection and for installation itself. The install was fast, very professionally done, left zero debris on site, and everything worked exactly as had been advertised. I'm an engineer and appreciated the entire process.
