Valuable lesson, I arrived in SYR international airport on July 17th 2026, with my hertz rental car confirmation in hand, prepaid and verified by Priceline. Waited in the line for a while, one person worked the airport desk for Hertz? The Hertz CSR stated my reservation was cancelled? I have no conformation concerning? No answers regarding? I called local Hertz concerning, no answer after numerous calls. I was told NO cars are available in the airport and vicinity due to a national car show event. How to get where I was going now? I called Hertz 1-800 to find same answer but no documentation concerning cancellation? Hertz in general had little empathy, did not assist and provided no information regarding the cancellation transaction? What seemed to prevail was that Hertz over booked due to the large regional event taking place and had no real plan regarding. I tried for two hours to remedy this situation to no avail. I hope I am never treated with such indignity again, sad display of customer service. Stranded now at SYR with no remedy, I finally took an Uber to Syracuse Amtrack, caught a train to Utica (1 hour away) by luck and Ubered to my hotel and beyond now for the day. I wish I could give ZERO stars. I showed up on time to pick up my rental, only to be told Hertz had no cars available. Despite this, I was incorrectly charged a no-show fee when I clearly SHOWED UP. It has now taken weeks and multiple phone calls to get a refund for a situation that was entirely Hertz's fault. Extremely frustrating and unprofessional experience. Horrible always trying to find a reason to cancel your rental or charge you extra fees. Lied and say there was no coverage but there was and lied saying I would have to pay full cost of any damage when the claim came through it was a standard 1k deductible. No itemized record of damage, scrapes and small bumps nothing crazy. A broken number and under carriage cover. All done by road conditions and poles no accidents. Then I took an Uber to the Syracuse - Burnet Avenue location--only to be told they had no cars available. To make matters worse, the two employees there were incredibly rude. Not just unhelpful--completely dismissive, cold, and condescending. No apology, no empathy. They acted like I was bothering them just by showing up. We rented a car for a weekend trip down to Virginia. It was a Chevy Malibu - just the standard midsize vehicle. The rental location is tucked into a corner lot at the intersections of Teall Ave and Burnet. Navigating the Teall Ave exit off of I-690 is always a challenge. Then making the quick turn on Burnet and then into the lot is not easy. But my vehicle was ready and the contract was printed and the keys on the agent's desk. I didn't need to do anything else except drive the car away. The agent was quick and courteous. Returning the car was just as easy, in-and-out. I will always use this location for off-airport rentals in the future. read more

hertzy at syracuse airport is no good... I had a confirmed reservation for 11 am on Feb 6 for a 3 day rental... I got charged full amount and never got a car. They said they had no cars... after waiting almost 2 hours they still said I could not have a car even though customer after customer kept walking right up and getting their cars. I doubt I will ever use hertz again and certainly not at syracuse airport. Also I deleted expedia which I had used many years. At Hancock Airport at the Hertz check in desk the person there was the most abusive rotten customer service attendant I have ever encountered in all my travels. For some reason this male decided to take out all his frustration on me. I didn't want to engage I was only there to rent a car. Charged me a large upgrade fee even though I'm a hertz gold plus member. Said I was lucky he was only charging me 20% upgrade fee because he should charge 40%. he said he almost got fired for not charging an up grade fee regardless of gold plus status. the car had not even been cleaned- had food all over the console, the doors, the seats. it was terrible but I was supposed to feel so so lucky they gave me any vehicle when they clearly had at least 10-20 cars on the lot. Tons of cars but it was super late at night and only the girl at the desk available. Brought it back in the am to say car is not ok and I needed to exchange for clean, gas and no engine light. He literally said NO I could call the 800 number. I rent several days a year from hertz as a gold/president circle. I know the procedure. He finally agreed and gave me what I actually rented BUT charged me an upgrade, fuel fee and "switched" my reservation to "override" the system causing me to apparently lose out on 8 days of rewards. The staff at this location was friendly and they had a nice selection of cars on hand. But I was about to be charged triple the price confirmed in my reservation. I booked this rental through Expedia and they emailed a detailed list of charges with a balance that was due upon pick up. For some reason the clerk did not follow my reservation and proceeded to bill my credit card for triple the amount plus a $200 deposit. My advice: check your receipt before walking out the door. I rented a car here just last week. 1st car I rented ,the engine light came on & then it read low power. So we returned it & got another one. 2nd car I rented , when we started it, it had a little knock so we turned it off & checked the oil. There was no oil in it . It was bone dry. We put what little bit we had in it & returned the car. Then I get my bill & they charged me for a upgrade which I didn't order. I will never go back to this place. I sent them a email but never heard back. They ended up charging me $370 for 4 days. After everything I went through with there vehicles I should of at least got a discount. read more

Jason Smith of Hertz at the 1216 Burnet Avenue location provided superlative service for a last-minute desperate request for a truck rental. I had reserved a truck at a UHaul location in Syracuse for July 30th. They canceled the reservation two hours before pick-up. I then reserved a Penske truck through the website, and had that reservation canceled 30 minutes later by the local Home Depot. Our troubles continued: Budget did not have a truck and Ryder no longer rents for personal use. Finally, I found one on the Hertz website, ordering a 12-foot box truck at 4:35PM for a 6PM pickup. I went to the location immediately, arriving around 4:55PM, and met with Jason. Good thing, too. It turns out they close at 5PM, not at 6 as listed on the Hertz website, and he neither had the order nor a truck. Jason promised to do his best, taking my name and number. He called me at 7:30AM the next morning to let me know he had located a truck. He called back at 8AM to let me know the key to the truck was broken! He promised to find another one for me. He finally located one in the afternoon. His extensive efforts, dogged persistence, and remarkable service were exceptional, going well beyond expectations and rescuing us from a dire situation. His business card lists Jason as a Manager Trainee. In my book, he has demonstrated the skills and professionalism necessary for a successful manager. If Hertz has an Employee of the Month program, Jason deserves the accolade hands-down. Thank you, Jason, for your considerable efforts. We could not have completed the move without your tremendous help. My 5-star review does not extend to Hertz! They failed to get our reservation to the Burnet Avenue location in a timely fashion. They also apparently never completed the rental for the previous renter, so I ended up being charged for their mileage (about 30 miles) as well as my 9 miles! Annoying! The rental was still cheap, but their system is in complete disarray. It makes Jason's superlative work even more valuable. read more

Recently, I rented a car from Hertz for an 8 hour round trip drive from Syracuse, NY to Manassas, Virginia. Soon, during my first stop at a rest area, I discovered that the back hatchback would not lock. So for the rest of my trip to Virginia and back, every time I stopped for a bathroom break, a meal, coffee, gas etc, I had to figure out how to keep my guitar and suitcase secure. That meant finding a place to back the car up to a pole or wall so the back couldn't physically be opened or carrying both of these items into wherever I was going. I returned the car on a Monday after hours so there was no Hertz representative to talk with at that time. I left a note in the car explaining the situation and early the next morning (Tuesday) I received an E mail from the site manager which read: "I double checked the locks on that rental and you are correct that the hatch does not lock. I am including my DM in this email to see what he suggests." After not hearing anything further from the site manager or the DM, I went to the Hertz site to see if there was a Hertz policy that might cover this type of situation. While sitting next to the the site manager, she again emailed her DM which read: "What can we do for this customer, please?" His suggestion was for her to print a $50 certificate presumably to be used on a future rental. Unfortunately, she was unable to print the certificate. So she gave me her card with a number to call to get my certificate. I balked at this saying that I didn't think I should have to work so hard to get some kind of compensation for the inconvenience. She agreed to make the call for me. After a considerable wait, the Hertz representative on the other end was unable to print a certificate for me. I left the office frustrated with a card from the site manager with a hand written note on it saying I was due a $50 discount on my next rental per DM. The site manager was friendly and did try to help me. But really, a certificate (had I been able to actually get one) meant that I was committed to rent a car again from Hertz. There is something incongruous to me that the relief I was offered for my inconvenience was to insure that I spend more money with Hertz. And having the site manager's card with a note on it meant that she would need to be still there (maybe a year or two later) when I returned for another rental. I guess what I wanted was for Hertz to give me $50 off the current rental. Unfortunately, the site manager said this couldn't be done because the contract for that rental had been closed. What!? Hertz may want to review this situation and come up with a better resolution for these kind of situations and to figure out a better way to satisfy their customers. One thing I've learned frm this is that one needs to check that all car locks are functioning before they leave with the car. Perhaps, even Hertz could add this to their pre rental car check. read more

This location is completely unprofessional. Three staff sitting at desks, on their personal phones, dressed unprofessional and even when taking calls for Hertz were unaware of what to say. There is no smoking in vehicles but they don't clean the vehicles afterwards either. It should not take 30+ minutes to get a vehicle when there is already a reservation in the system. read more

What a headache!! So I booked my rental through travelocity (mistake #1) then I went to pick it up at this location (mistake #2). I waited 30 minutes to talk to the guy, there was only one guy working on a busy Saturday, makes sense. So then I started talking to him and told me it was going to be literally twice as much the original price I was given with the 100$ insurance! I made a reservation to pick up a Hertz rental car at 638 W Genesee St, Syracuse, New York, USA on Jan 9, 2024 (drop off at same location on Jan 11th). I am not from Syracuse but from western Canada and was visiting family in the Syracuse area. For some reason, I had a bad gut feeling about the rental and on Jan 2nd decided to go physically to the pick-up/drop-off location noted above. When I arrived at 638 W Genesee St, Syracuse, I could not find any Hertz staff or rental cars. I spoke with a neighbouring business person who advised me that Hertz had not been operating from that location for approximately 8-9 months. He confirmed that if I had shown up on Jan 9th expecting to pick up my rental it would not have been there. Are you aware of this issue?! This was very disconcerting to me and would have completely spoiled my 2 day trip plans. And...I suspect Hertz would have charged me for "failing to pick up my rental," which would have led to a lengthy dispute with your company also. I went online to try to change my rental pick up to another Syracuse location but could not do so. So I cancelled my rental completely and went with another company. My car was in the shop and my insurance booked a rental through Hertz. On the third night I had the rental, I was driving to class in the rain and noticed an icon lit on the dashboard. The icon was an orange wrench. I turned around and returned home because I didn't want car problems at night in the rain. I missed class (not formal education - fun class). At home, I looked up the icon and it said service was due. Next day, I called Hertz to get a different car. Without asking my name or contract #, they said the car had been serviced and they had just forgotten to reset the alert. They said it was OK to drive. They said there were no other cars. They said I could keep calling back in case one got returned or I could call the next nearest Hertz dealer. They did not offer to make any arrangements for me. I called the national Customer Service number. They asked the mileage and said the service had been performed. She told me to drive to an AutoZone and get someone there to reset the alert. I said I had other things to do and I couldn't believe She was suggesting I take their car in for maintenance. She said it wasn't for maintenance. Finally, I just called and told them I wasn't going to be responsible for driving their car when it had alerts and told them to come get it. I was sad that the Customer Service at Hertz was so poor. I traveled a lot for one job and I was a Hertz Gold member and used to enjoy doing business with them. But both the local company and the national customer service were pathetic. read more

I made a reservation over a week ago. I called last week to confirm the type of car I need. When I didn't receive a confirmation email for the upgrade I needed, I called back to make sure I was all set. It turns out that no one ever processed my upgrade. Now they don't have a car large enough to accommodate the group I have traveling. I'm going to have to tell someone they can't ride with me. Not very professional at all. In addition to all of that, I was on hold for about 45 minutes in total for the several times I had to call to try to get this fixed. Truly terrible service. Worst experience of my life. Pre paid a car for my son traveling to Syracuse. Upon arrival they would not allow him to take the car because his ID did not match the reserving charge card. When front desk was asked to cancel reservation they said they could not cancel it - you had to call headquarters. The number given by the desk, as well as number given on my charge statement reached a fully automated line with no option to speak to a live rep nor an option to cancel a current reservation. A cancel link given on the confirmation email continued to loop and did not allow for cancellation. Then my son tried to reserve in his own name with his own card, ultimately they still wouldn't allow him to take a car because the limit on his credit card was not high enough for the large required deposit. Again, they couldn't cancel the reservation at the desk and link on confirmation email didn't work. They charged him a 50$ cancellation fee on his card. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN! I travel a lot and rent a lot of cars - never with DOLLAR/HERTZ again! Don't do it. read more

Absolutely terrible. Complicated. No flexibility- does not care for good customer service or customer circumstances - just stern policy that felt absolutely offensive enough for me to want to leave immediately. I read stories where corporate businesses give exceptions (to students, to disabled, to county workers, to staff friends and family members) but Burnet Ave - Hertz isn't one of them. I will now be canceling my AAA premium because of the policy of needing a 700 credit score (I'm a student) to redeem the AAA + Hertz free rent-a-car included. I was under the impression that the process would be a lot simpler since I've rented cars before, but unfortunately it's not at Hertz. It was a nightmare! Theres a strict no-debit card policy for same day rentals. They never explained this, and after taking my reservation and picking me up they refused my debit/credit combo card. I reserved a vehicle a month in advance for a business trip for the first time in Syracuse. I have been a Gold Member for over 10 years in Buffalo and NEVER had an issue until I came here. I was called at 7:30 to tell me my car wouldn't be available until 10 am. I told them that would be ok and confirmed my pick up service. I was told the pick up would be from the district office on Burnett. I went to work and looked at the clock it was 11 am. I called and was told they still didn't have anything. The representative was from the Burnett office and told me I had the wrong location. They gave me the number to their satellite location on W Genesee St. I called and got the Burnett office again. They said it was because they didn't have a phone at the other location. Why did they give me the number then?! I asked how I was supposed to know the status of my vehicle if I can't call them and they aren't calling me? I asked for a manager and was told there wasn't one available in all of Syracuse. I called the 800 number and was referred back to a local manager and was told again no managers anywhere in Syracuse. I called back at 3:30 and was told they had a car. Scheduled the pick up service and the driver was all over the place. Finally connected with them and was taken to the Burnett location which was 20 minutes from where I was. When I arrived I was given a compact car. I told them I was a Gold Member and asked for my upgrade. There were upgrades there and being dropped off at the time. I have picture of every vehicle on the lot as proof. The "Manager Trainee" Jeromshaleka or whatever said to me " if you rent a compact you get a compact PERIOD!!! She started snapping her neck like a chicken and rolling her eyes and yelling me. I asked her to stop yelling at me and she yelled that she wasn't yelling at me. I asked for a manager and again was told there wasn't one and if I wanted an intermediate car I should have reserved one. I told her I didn't need to as a Gold Member I can use my perk and I wanted a manager. Her coworkers just sat there and watched and never did anything to stop her from her behavior. I called her a bitch because that was how she was behaving and I was so angry that I was being treated so very rude and disrespectful and made me feel like I didn't have the right to ask for a service that has always been provided to me when available for the last 10 years. She hopped out of her seat and told me I was lucky she was at work. I asked what she would have done if she wasn't and she told me she would "whop my ass" I told her to just give me my car so I could leave. Her only response was call me another bitch. I told her I had already done so and didn't need to do it again. It's clear you have no plans of renting me my car. She kept saying call me another bitch and I won't. The whole time she's standing there refusing to rent me my vehicle and demanding that I call her another bitch. The whole time I'm on the phone with the police who heard her threaten to put her hands on me. I kept telling her I just want my car so I could leave. They dispatched a car and told me to wait there. I waited until they closed as she never rented me the car and she had people come up to the location to fight me. I was on the phone with Hertz Customer service the whole time after I called the police and they told me the only people who could help me was a local manager. I told them they didn't have any in Syracuse and even made them call with me on the phone to try to get one and they told them the same thing no mangers in Syracuse. I demanded a manger call me and they never did. I made another reservation the next day which cost me a day of a business conference and hotel I paid for because I missed the event. I not to mention I had to pay $20 for an Uber to get back across town because they wouldn't even drop me back off. The second reservation went as it should have the first time. It's probably the worst rental experience I've had. Manager Joshua Hilario is SO RUDE and RACIST!!! Last Sunday morning I picked up my car, but they accidentally gave me someone else's car. I called Hertz, they asked me to go to the office to change my reservation. OKAY, I went there and they said I have to brought my license. OKAY, I went back home and took my license, then that RUDE guy said I have to brought my translation for my international license. You guys already accepted my license and I got a car. He hides behind his employees and acts like he doesnt know anything. Several issues with this place. I have been renting from this place for about 3 years. I used to rent 1-3 times a month until recently because i switched to ENTERPRISE (much better service). I only go back to Hertz when it's cheaper otherwise Hertz would be the last place i would go. BTW Hertz prices are great, but the local office needs new staff as well as a new manager! I have only gotten 1 ride out of the 3 years that I've rented from this office and that was with the prior manager. Their excuse is not enough staff in the beginning which was understandable, but now they have plenty of staff and their excuse is that they're too busy. Really? I called them today and told them i was taking the bus and I would be a few minutes late. They said they couldn't wait, but if someone was still in the office when I arrived then they would open the doors. I got there about 8 minutes after they closed. Byron (the manager) was there, but again hiding behind his employee's. There was a rude employee that i spoke with. I spoke to her 3 different times and each time she was extremely rude. She said she didn't know who told me on the phone that I could come after they closed. She was angry that she had to go do the paperwork. She said a few smart remarks as she gave me the keys about it being after hours. This made me very angry because of what happened last week when I rented a car from them. She is the african american that works there, but you can tell who she is just by her attitude and personality without knowing what she she looks like. My reservation was for 12:30pm last Saturday and I was there on time, but I waited patiently until after 1pm (closing time) before they finally gave me the car.
