    Paint needs done on patio

First off I do not normally post a bad review I just don't use the place again. A friend pointed out that helping others is the reason for reviews. SO if you decide to stay here note that the good reviews are long ago. I hardly know where to start and a one star is generous. I guess the one star is good at least the room had hot water however that was it! Note we were the only guests in this very large Inn. When walking to the front door we were surprised at how dingy it was.. hmmm not a good start. The room was tiny and full of old junk. Now I know it was Victorian but the furniture and bed was old and unkept. The bedding and pillows were a joke. It needed updated desperately. There was NO room to sit at a table even a tiny one for your coffee unless you went to the nasty outdoor patio. Tiny and I mean tiny closet (probably 4 foot across) held a mini fridge with a microwave on top of a piece of plywood with a dirty cloth on top then a old coffee pot and on the left barely room to hang a few clothes. First off we were the ONLY guests and forget the great breakfast ... online it shows a beautiful spread and we were looking forward to that. we were were asked by Margie the owner if we wanted any eggs or bacon we said yes and it was accompanied by couple of fruits and nut bread the nut bread was delicious. Not close to the spread promised. The owner cooked in a kitchen where we could see her chained up dogs. We love dogs and were shocked and thought at least she could have put them in another room instead of being chained up. We requested a couple of more towels and wash cloths and you would have thought we asked for keys to the castle. We were told tropical landscape a nice private patio through French doors. Let's just say we went out to the patio ..the chairs were peeling paint and the top I had to clean up inches of dirt. Our fabulous view was a dirty pool , their boat and cars, The porch was filthy and needed paint. The tropical outdoors was basically dirt because her large dogs ran constantly. We had breakfast but the next morning was Easter and I had not heard from Margie the owner so we assumed she would not be serving and we were okay with that. We came home from town and I noticed her daughter outside and NICELY told her we would be leaving early the next morning and what was protocal for key return. She said well at least you could call and let my mother know you are leaving because "I" have to clean your room. She continued by chastising me that we did not tell Margie(her mother) we were not doing breakfast. I explained we were trying to be considerate because it was Easter and I did not know if her Mom was cooking breakfast nor was I told anything. She continued on berating me to the point when I went into the room my other half saw I was shaking and said that's it. I was shocked.. I'm a nice person and could not believe I was being spoken to in such a manner. We packed right then and left. I called Margie and told her we were leaving and explained why .. she kind of said sorry for her daughter. And as far as breakfast that we did attend she did not cook until we were there so I can't imagine how we put her out. Could she not picked up the phone and checked on us to see if we were coming? Additionally we were told that there was wonderful path through trees to town. Yeah for about 6 yards and then it was dirt and concrete all the way. So talk about being scammed. Nothing and I mean nothing was like it was described to me my Margie. I'm sure in the pass this has been a beautiful well maintained Inn but that must have been long ago. Additionally there is no way to adjust the A/C and it was hot the complete time we were there. So final words.. if you expect an even a semi decent place to stay this is not it. She obviously runs it by herself now and could use some help. Run don't walk to another rental. Glenda T

My daughter, mother and I just spent a lovely weekend at Heron Cay Bed and Breakfast. We were there to visit my niece and her family in nearby Umatilla. Lucky for us the Heavenly room was available for me and my daughter. It was a beautiful, spacious room with a king-sized bed, fireplace (which we didn't use), and jacuzzi tub. My mother stayed in the Highwaymen Sunsets room (named for all of the Highway Men paintings throughout the B&B), which was smaller than our room, but perfect for my mom. Our hosts, Margie (the owner), Melissa (her daughter) and Jacob (Melissa's son) were super hospitable. Jacob even helped us take our bags up/down the stairs. Margie & Melissa went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast was beyond delicious - 2 egg dishes (1 vegetarian, 1 not) were made in a not quite poached/not quite fried way that I'm still figuring out. Homemade banana bread, bread pudding, sausage and a fruit plate that included pineapple grown on the B&B's beautiful grounds. Fresh squeezed OJ, coffee, tea, hot cocoa. I wish we'd gotten to enjoy the grounds and pool while we were there, but a tropical storm prevented that. For the bit, I was able to get out, I was able to see a tropical paradise with a huge variety of trees, flowers, ginger plants, vines, and of course pineapple. Margie and Missy must have bright green thumbs:-) Other notes - downtown Mt. Dora is a short walk along the property's wooded path. But if you prefer not to walk, there is a golf cart shuttle service that will pick you up at the B&B, take you into town, and then take you back when you're done. We used it the first night to go to dinner and it worked out perfectly. Ask the innkeeper for more info, as I can't remember the name of ther service or driver. In spite of the tropical storm that kept our trip pretty wet, we really enjoyed our time at Heron Cay. I plan to return with my husband for one of the festival weekends and will stay here with him.

There was good and bad to our 1 night stay here. The house is a beautiful Victorian style replica that was built in the 1990's. It is currently for sale and in need of some upkeep. It's a great location in proximity to Mt. Dora, but you can hardly see the lake. The room was spacious, but the walls are thin. The biggest disappointment was the personalized touch that normally is the B&B difference. The owner really seemed unhappy as if she couldn't wait to sell the place. For example, one of the biggest things they promote is breakfast. The owner came as as we were sitting in the dining room. I'm thinking she's coming out to greet us and the other guests and started making small talk. In reality, she was only coming to tell my husband and I that she wouldn't make eggs 2 ways and we had to choose one or the other. We thought this hilarious as the server asked us how we wanted them cooked. He chose scrambled, I chose over easy(not complicated.) The food however was really good. Once remodeled and in the hands of an owner who cares, it could be a really quaint and lovely place.

On our first trip to Mount Dora, I booked a chain hotel as I was not sure of staying in a Bed & Breakfast. Upon arriving at the chain hotel just out of the main area, my man said lets find some place else closer to downtown. I called around and the owner of this place was a darling! She booked us right away and upon arrival, we knew we made the right choice. This place is not an authentic old Victorian - only made to look like it (great job though!!). The owner was one of the loveliest ladies we have ever met. Sadly the trees have overgrown on the road so it blocks any view of the water - the trees are the towns so this owner cant do anything to improve that issue. Very clean and you feel like you are at your favorite aunts! The owner makes breakfast for everyone in the morning which was excellent. The owner is selling the property - we wish her the best. GPS got us lost but owner guided us over the phone - so DO call if you need help!)

We visited with Margie and Randy for a special birthday and our stay at Heron Cay definitely hit the mark. First impression walking into the entrance way was wow! The layout of the rooms, the décor, the never ending collectables and historical items to ponder over, the Christmas decorations, all took our breath away. We booked "Heavenly" and it most certainly lived up to its name. Did not expect it to be such a massively large suite but definitely made us feel special. The bathroom was gigantic, the layout amazing and the tub was a great way to unwind each day. The bedroom and sitting room gave such a comfortable Victorian feel that we really debated leaving each day to explore Mount Dora. Margie and Randy were great hosts and their eye for the décor and the layout in every room was amazing. Could spend a weekend just browsing thru the items on display and still not see everything. And there was a story behind every item. Highwayman art was everywhere and gave such a great old Florida feel. Beautiful collection of items and we tip our hats to them for laying it out so wonderfully and the Christmas tree and decorations inside and out definitely set the spirit of the season. The breakfasts were wonderful, the egg casserole was delicious and served with French toast and the second morning we were blown away being greeted with Eggs Benedict. Our third morning Randy and Margie went way over the top with the casserole and breakfast "pizza" creations. Although we normally would have breakfast a little earlier, it was worth the wait. And for the early risers they do have coffee, fresh coffee cake and cereal out early. Compliments to the chef(s). We requested to be introduced to their furry four legged family members as we are pet people and animal lovers. Great well behaved family with a big batch of enjoyable personalities. Don't let that sway anything because if we didn't ask we'd never have known they were there. Well behaved, quiet and never in the guest area. But if you're an animal lover ask to meet them, they'll be happy to say Hi. Overall a great experience and we can easily and highly recommend Heron Cay for a stay. We'll be back and even if we're passing thru we'll stop in and say Hi to Margie and Randy, great people and great hosts.

    Bed made?!?!

Omg, where to start! Do not stay here! Overpriced for what you get. Very very dated house. In need of many, many repairs. Sure it looks good from afar then you get closer and it felt like a hoarders paradise! Junk everywhere! Rooms are just ridiculous. No air conditioning. Had a fan that helped but was filthy! It was definitely dated 70's style! Went to the breakfast that she serves everyday. Coffee was bad, used the cream and it curdled in my cup. Spider webs on the tables where she served the food! This place is NOT clean! There are leaks in the ceilings. Also in the bath I had! The pillows are what I really couldn't believe. I mean you can go to Walmart and get a decent pillow that looks fluffy! The ones on my bed were old and lumpy and were probably washed in a washer machine! Disgusting! The sheets weren't clean either! This place needs MAJOR repairs and renovations! When you arrive you can see the balcony that looks like it's about to fall down. Needs paint badly. Landscape is nice also from afar then again, the closer you get it's just a mish mash of plants and weeds! This could be a nice B & B but you would have to put a lot of money into it to command the price she does. It also needs to be cleaned, very very badly! I would NEVER recommend this establishment. A Motel 6 is probably better! Very disappointed! Also dirty outside on porch. She acknowledged this and said she was going to wash it off. Never happened! There is a kids train track running alongside of sidewalk that doesn't work, yet they don't get rid of the track. The interior is decorated with very busy fabrics and wallpapers! And every space has some collectible in it! Too much clutter! Way, way too much clutter. If you're a hoarder, then you just found your dream vacation! I could barely focus from all of the junk inside and the busy fabrics and paint! I think people go here if they have dogs as she allows dogs! It dirty, smells like animals and like I said lots and lots of CLUTTER!! Don't stay here. Go to the Hampton Inn. I don't think they have any 5 star hotels in the area! Sad because it's a nice quaint town. This place is a rip off. Paid $410 for 2 nights! The ritz in Orlando where I came from was less!!!! BEWARE, DIRTY, CLUTTERED, OVERPRICED!!!

Gracious hosts, beautiful and spacious rooms and a delectable breakfast. It is located very close to the Mount Dora shopping area. While we did not use it, we were told there is a walking trail that leads from the rear of the B&B to the sidewalk leading into town. We plan to return and spend another weekend at Heron Cay.

Delightful and charming, this B&B and it's hosts are one of a kind. The house is comfortable and relaxing and the food is delicious. All the rooms are decorated beautifully and ours had a fireplace and lace canopied bed. Breakfast is an event and sure to start your day off right. It is beautifully presented and delicious, meant to linger and enjoy the company of fellow guests and gather info on things to do while in Mount Dora. A short walk to downtown is easily accessed thru a passage on the property.

Even if you have stayed there, the chances that things have fallen down hill are always possible. No coverage for your motorcycles and if you are like us, your bikes are an appendage and you want to protect them! Upon entering the property you are greeted by lovely grounds, a beautiful tree and lawns and an impressively maintained home. The owners came out to greet us with big smiles. DAVE and STEF were warm and inviting and made us feel as if we were visiting good friends or family. We were able to park our cycles under the carport and had plenty of parking for our trailer and truck. We reserved the smaller unit that consists of a beautifully set up bedroom and bath with a separate entrance and patio area. The room is equipped with a very clean, comfortable bed, ceiling fan, bistro table, microwave, fridge, dishes, (real) coffee maker, TV, wifi, utensils and so much more. The kindest details are noticeable in the room! Shampoo/Conditioner, Soft NICE towels, wall mounted magnified make-up MIRROR... Sooo much more to list! And THE ICING on the cake is, STEF makes an optional beautiful breakfast in the morning, set outside your door at 8am!
