Rich and Gene are extremely good at teaching BJJ - the key is teaching. Examining the students' experience level based on how work in training, finding what concepts and techniques will benefit them the most based on what they see with their many years of experience, and explaining an demonstrating it in a way that will get the student the furthest in their goals. They don't let their purple or blue belts do all the teaching - they get in there and break it down, examine the issues they see, and find great ways to explain and improve in those areas. They are great at teaching newer students, as as a white belt with a year or so of experience, the knowledge and ability jump in that have been very large. I feel like 3 months of time here is worth 2x the time I have spent elsewhere. The benefit (and also a downside) to the school is it is very small (for adults). You get a lot of personal attention and guidance. The downside is the classes can be small sometimes for adults, depending on the day and time. If you are an advanced BJJ artist it would be a great opportunity to get a lot of individual help from very experience practitioners. The facilities are extraordinary clean and well-maintained - as good as or better than many schools. I would eat lunch off their mats :) read more

I dropped by this BJJ academy for a trial and was impressed with how everything is operated. Very smooth communication to arrange the free trial (3 days / 1 week), and the instructors are top notch. There is a recurring schedule for mornings and evenings to fit your training needs. Each instructor provided very strong technical detail about techniques and moves. As for sparring, the sessions were both technical and fun. Samurai BJJ also has a very strong kids program for those looking to get their children enrolled to build self-defense skills, discipline, and confidence. Samuria is an amazing school! This is my first committed, and serious foray into any martial art, and I've had a blast so far. I've taken martial arts in the past and wrestled in middle school, so I'm familiar with schools, and also have some friends who are martial arts instructors. This school is definitely a stand out to to me. The instructors are very professional, but also very down to earth, casual, and friendly. This is a school that truly values people's experiences there, and wants everyone to grow and learn at a healthy and reasonable pace. In no way does that mean they aren't serious! The instructors are talented and experienced martial artists and Rich is a welcoming and fun instructor who has a lot of first hand experience to share. The facilities are very clean (this is really important when it comes to a Dojo) and the mat is cleaned, wiped, and sanitized twice a day. They have great showering facilities, which are neat, and easy to use. Students can purchase Gi's from the school, or get a loner until they purchase their own. Probably the only school in the South Bay where the vast majority of classes are nogi. Fantastic facilities at the modern building, with spotless toilets and showers. Rich is an amazing instructor! This is the top BJJ school in the Bay. My husband goes here and both my boys (4 1/2 year old and 6 1/2 year old). They love coming to their class. Everyday they ask me to take them here. I stay while they are in class. I noticed how patient Rich is with the kids and really takes the time to teach them and make sure that they are having fun. All of the other kids that I see there look like they are having a blast. Owner and instructor Rich Jackson has a perfect philosophy and approach to the sport; to possess and to teach a complete understanding of the grappling arts. Rich accomplishes this while teaching in a safe and clean environment where his students can focus on competitive, sport or self-defense BJJ. His students seem to have a mellow vibe with very little aggression, which is a clear reflection of the instructor. One uncommon thing about Rich is his willingness to listen to his students, so his repertoire also includes non-traditional BJJ skills as well as the more traditional BJJ skills that are becoming widely available. Lastly, Rich is very welcoming to all students of BJJ, from other academies or other arts, and makes each class fun and informative. We started with Rich in the middle of 2015 and are glad we did! My 5 year old son had started kindergarten and was finding himself getting pushed around a bit. After another mom at school who observed what was happening said to me that I needed to teach my son to stick up for himself, I started looking. We tried an intro class, and my son immediately took to Rich, and he's pretty picky about who he likes. A year later, my son can not only stick up for himself, he feels good about himself and has a confidence he didn't have before. He can also wipe me right off my feet. The first time I asked him to show me a move, i found myself on the floor. My son also developed anxiety about just about everything during the school year, and Rich was very helpful and understanding way above and beyond. He just developed a trusting bond I can see between him and my son that I am very thankful for. Rich is incredibly patient, encouraging, yet firm when he needs to be. We couldn't be happier!
