Having just moved to the area I was looking for an academy to continue my training. I did a very simple search, checking places out ordered by the distance from my home. After my first class here i knew it was the place to be. Batata teaches his classes which is awesome. Aside from being a very technical teacher he's also always working to make people laugh. I came in with my son and his friend to scope out the studio and unfortunately left dissappointed. We were met with blank stares by the two instructors that were present. I asked about the program and they didn't have any helpful context to share about it but they told us to just stay and watch. In addition to the disappointment we experienced from the staff, the studio itself was disgustingly dirty. We switched seats because we noticed a layer of grime on the several seats and left early when we saw that it was a dirty studio throughout. Avoid Batata Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My son (almost 12) has trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu for 4.5 years. We visited simply to evaluate whether this gym would be a good fit. Within minutes, it was clear the kids class was made up almost entirely of much younger, much smaller beginners. That's not a criticism--it's just not an appropriate training environment for an older, experienced kid who needs the right partners to develop safely. I asked if there were other classes or days with a different mix. I was told this was essentially it. So I politely said it wasn't the right fit and thanked them for their time. That should have been the end of the interaction. Instead, Mr. Batata himself--not just a coach, but the owner--became immediately confrontational in tone, stepped into my personal space, and began making assumptions about why we were considering switching gyms, as if we were doing something wrong by even looking. He then launched into how this "isn't just a business," implying I should somehow structure my life around loyalty to a gym--despite the fact that we were there for the first time and simply trying to make the best decision for my son. It was unreasonable and completely out of line. I calmly explained that we take this very seriously and that changing gyms is a big decision. That didn't matter--he dismissed it and continued with an aggressive, condescending tone. As I was leaving with my son, he kept talking at me, and another instructor joined in. At that point, it crossed from uncomfortable into completely unprofessional. No parent should have to walk their child out of a business while being talked at for simply saying "this isn't the right fit." The entire interaction left both me and my son feeling unsettled and, honestly, a bit icky. That's not something I've ever experienced walking into a jiu-jitsu academy before. This wasn't a misunderstanding. This was the owner reacting poorly to a polite "no," and doing so in front of a child. If this is the tone set at the top, it raises serious concerns about the culture and judgment being modeled in that gym. We walked in open-minded. We walked out uncomfortable. After training and competing in Boxing , BJJ Muay Thai for many years I gave up for a while , then in 2017 after 3 years no training I started to look for a place that was low key and a solid Brazilian coach I found Sandro Batata BJJ at first it was hard getting back in to shape but Batatas gym had nothing but grinders straight hard work and strong basics I met some great solid people there. Brandon is a respectful young guy but don't be fooled by his nice demeanor the guy is a straight beast he pushes everyone on the mat to go the extra round and he's really inspiring I've trained at many gyms and this gym is the best I've been to Batata is also a nice guy but all business when it comes to the BJJ art. I had to move after buying a home in the Central Valley but I really do miss the grind at Batata BJJ it was my place to relieve stress and become a better person.... My kids and nephew have been coming to Sandro Batata (Bjj) for several months, & they have learned allot from coming here, self defense, discipline, and self confidence!!! I started training jiu-jitsu many years ago and started my California journey at Ralph Gracie's academy under Sandro Batata. I had some bad experiences with many other gyms in the area that had poor mentalities such as "their way or the highway", purely competition driven training or just poor instruction. Now that I have kids on my own and Batata has his own gym, it was a no brainer to start my eldest at Batata's school. The head instructor, Albert, is amazing with his technique, his excellent communication and his demeanor which all show through his teaching ability. The kids have tons of fun and learn at an accelerated rate than what I'm used to. The combined experience of all the staff really show. Coupled with Brandon and Becca, the classes are organized and run very smoothly in a positive environment. My kids will be going here for a long time :) HIGHLY recommended. read more

I came to this place almost 2 years ago and wish I would have done it sooner! I came in at 280lbs and since have slimmed down to 205 and still going! The technique's you learn are awesome and keeps you interested that you never want to miss a class. Very roomy and clean environment, and great classmates. I just started at Batata BJJ and I love it. The atmosphere is very friendly. I have received assistance in my training from classmates at all levels, from black belts to newer white belts, without the usual attitude you get at other schools. Batata is a current competitor and champion (Look him up in You Tube). Yet he still finds the time to be at every class. He is a true motivator. His classes are organized and disciplined, workouts are quite active. There is no time wasted sitting around. Darwin is alive and well in his gym, you will be pushed to be successful every minute you are training and if you are lazy you will find yourself submitted. However, Batata is a warm, family-friendly, nurturing person and this spirit is strong within the culture of his gym. He attracts serious, honorable, well-motivated and kind students. Training brutally and smashing your opponents is not tolerated, unlike many places I have trained before. Intelligent, solid, smart, and mutually-beneficial training is Batata's way. When I had to quit, due to work, I had no problems with billing. I mention this because there are health clubs, martial arts studios, cable and internet companies that will keep billing you and who make it hard to quit. I have experienced Batata as a consistently honorable businessman. He is one of the best coaches I have known and I have learned a lot from him for which I am grateful. I have been training at this academy for about a year and a half now, and it has completely changed my life. I have found a real passion for the sport, and I have learned many lessons that I will carry into my future. I cannot say enough good things about training under a jiu jitsu master like Batata. I emailed ahead of time to straighten out a time when i could drop in and try out a class, as I'm looking for a place to train. I was welcomed to go down and try a free class at 7. I emailed back saying i would be by. Went by on a tuesday and before i even got thru the door, i was asked if i needed info, and i replied with "Not really. I emailed to try out a free cla..." and before i could finish, the instructor said, "oh yeah, today is not a good day for that. This is a more experienced class. Why don't you come back tomorrow?" To which i replied, "Well, i have an appointment at another place tomorrow..." He came back with "Go to that other place tomorrow. Come back here another day." He was totally polite by the way, not really nasty or short or anything, but i didn't even make it thru the door on a day where I had scheduled in time to try out this gym. The person I emailed, and the person I talked to were 2 different people, but still, it kind of gave of the "we've got plenty of students, inquire elsewhere" vibe. I can't believe I didn't think to leave a review sooner! My son has been training here for 3 years now. He started when he was 7. We absolutely love this place. I couldn't ask for a better group of instructors to serve as role models for my son. Albert, Brandon and Bekah are incredible. They train hard themselves and lead by example. My son has learned so much over the past three years. Aside from the physical aspect of training and self defense, my son has learned discipline, the value of working towards a goal, that hard work pays off and the importance of leading an active, healthy lifestyle. He participated in his first competition this past weekend and had an amazing experience. Albert did a great job with him one on one to prepare him mentally & physically.
