This is a private owned Tae Kwon Do company. I'm a student here and I like it here because the Mr. Silver gives us individual attention. Two years ago, I was scared to join any Tae Kwon Do school, but when I tried this place out, everyone was really welcoming and nice. This place is like a little community. I studied Tae Kwon Do at Taejin Tae Kwon Do for two years when I was younger. I took a very long break and decided I wanted to start Tae Kwon Do again. I called around to see how much it would cost, and my they are $$$. This place is one of the best priced. They had a free trial for a week so I did that. I decided to join because everyone was really nice here and it fit within my budget. I remember when I first joined, my muscles were sore for a month!! It came to the point, where I would walk funny, but that went away. My muscles just had to get use to working out again, and it just meant I had a good workout. I like it here! While most of the teachers are really nice they don't seem to have control of the students. The ratio of instructors to students was too high for effective training. first of all... I am not qualified to review their Tae Kwon Do Dojo as a dojo. Hopefully somebody else will come along and do that. I can say that my friend's kid goes there and they like it enough. It looks clean enough, the mat is big and soft enough and there are cool looking young folk with ribbons on the walls and in the display case. If you do go in, check out the pic of the famous but really freakin scary looking 10 year old with the 6 pack abs - pics just to the left of the main desk. WOW... that kid freaks me out. No offense, i am sure he can kick my rear around the block like a soccer ball, but muscles like that on a 10 year old just aint right... Back to the point, we were here the other day for a kids birthday. Like so many places with a bit of space, they will host a birthday party for a price. Obviously this is a Tae Kwon Do themed birthday. They play some games, do some simple punch kicky things in a line, and then finish with a death match between the birthday boy and the smallest kid there. Overall the kids looked to have fun, burned some energy, etc. Then they have a room in the back big enough for a big long table (read snacks, cake, presents, etc). For a birthday outing, its not quite the pure elation of one of those jumpy house places, and airborne gymnastics has a little more for the kids to do. But its a neat theme and a bit different which is cool. Be prepared that your kid might walk out asking to do Tae Kwon Do (I saw a coupe kids in full parent nag mode when leaving). I bet the teacher gets plenty of clients from these birthdays. read more

Tae Kwon Do is a healthy sport with a healthy attitude. Silva Martial arts has all the positive traits that we were looking for in a martial arts studio. This place is very family oriented and the instructors are great with the students! My son is only 4 and he has gained so much flexability and strength from his classes. He has also learned some self control, and for a 4 year old thats pretty impressive. If you are looking for a studio where your child can grow and develop healthy habits and excersise, then this is the place for you!! They also offer a short summer camp that is lots of fun for older children, like 6-12, kids do not have to do TKD to join the camp. Silva's Martial Arts has been excellent for my boy now 9 who started at 6. I only wish he had started at 3 as is such a helpful preparation for school. We look forward to his progression from a teen to adult and earning a black belt. The instructors are very knowledgeable in teaching both the physical training and the life skills of good character building like focus and perseverance. FEBRUARY 2010 The studio had to move near Costco Santa Clara. Spectators should bring sweaters. But participants get warm quickly. The reason it gets cold there because the new space is bigger so it takes a lot more to heat during winter time. Also, there's plenty more space for parents and families to hang out, watch, and wait. There's even tables, chairs, and benches for you to get comfy on. MARCH 2009 Taking Tae Kwon Do is already awesome but Silva TKD makes it even more fun. If you're looking for a positive, friendly, and knowlegeable tae kown do dojang, this is it. The dojang (studio) is large and clean. Smells nice. It does not smell like a locker room like other places are. Mr Silva is competent, knowledgeable, patient, postive, and a great teacher. He know what he's talking about but more importantly he has the skills to translate it to someone who is a rookie or seasoned student. Prices is reasonable. I can tell you its a little more than what you'd pay for a normal Ballys-type gym but attending TKD classes is way more worth it. You learn new skills and discipline. Going to the gym is a lot of times boring and redundant. Silva TKD is NOT boring at all. There's always something new. Classes coverforms, sparring skills, and conditioning. read more

My son started out in the Tiny Tigers class for ages 3-6 or so. He is 6 and just moved on to the big kids class (as he calls it) because he did so well at his last belt testing. Since we enrolled him, he has learned the difference between fighting and self-defense. He has learned great self control of his attitude and actions. The instructors are AWESOME and make sure each student gets their turn to practice their moves. We drive from southeast San Jose 3 times a week just to keep our son at this studio. SMA is a fantastic studio run by a dedicated, knowledgeable, and patient staff. I myself attended this studio off and on since the age of 16. My younger brothers all also attended here, with one of my younger brothers receiving his black belt as a result. My brother has a cognitive disability, and while he is incredibly smart and dedicated to whatever it is he does, can struggle processing complex information, especially when it is new (forms, etc.,.). Not only were they facilitating of that, but they also created an environment where he could feel safe and secure in his practice and even went as far as expecting him, just like any other student, to lead lower level classes. Furthermore, when my family went through some very difficult times, the studio was yet another support system in the community. They banned together to help our family, and were very supportive. These are things that from a business perspective, when considering the value and emphasis an organization places on its customers, are above and beyond. They care about the whole athlete, the whole family unit. Mr. Silva, Mr. Brian, Mr. Torres, Mrs. Gabby (as my brother refers to them as), as are truly special and fantastic people. From a content perspective, they know their stuff, and they know how to train and teach. After training with them off and on for a few years, I ended up in Korea myself, where I decided to complete my training and receive my black belt. I enjoyed the studio in Korea very much. I can tell you, though, that SMA pushes their athletes just as hard, and trains them just as well, if not even better. You won't be disappointed with your choice to train here, especially if you have young children that you would like to develop physically, mentally, and emotionally. We have two kids who love coming to Silva Martial Arts for Tae Kwon Do classes. In addition to learning martial arts and getting a great workout, they work on the importance of self-control, and being respectful and positive. In response to the outdated review complaining of a lack of parking, temperature, and bathroom location, the studio moved locations a few years ago, where these issues are no longer relevant. The studio has ample parking, comfortable temperature, and a clean, accessible bathroom. It's a smaller studio, so limited seating sometimes becomes a problem on high attendance events, such as belt testing, and you may find yourself having to stand if you arrive early for class while you wait for the earlier class to clear out. Sometimes, I'd just walk a few shops over to grab some Starbucks if we're early. Definitely give them a try, if you are looking for a healthy extracurricular activity for your child. read more

My child has been a student at Silva Martial Arts for almost four years. They offer a Tiny Tigers class for ages 3-5, a kids class for ages 5-12, and a teen/adult class. This is primarily a Taekwondo studio, but some of the instructors are trained in other martial arts. About the instructors: Mr. Hurst is absolutely amazing with the kids, soft spoken, but able to keep the attention of a large group of energetic adolescent kids with his kind and patient demeanor. We also really like Mr. Roilo, Miss Gabby, Mr. Kaden, and Mr. Torres, who are also excellent with the kids. Master Silva is the owner. He doesn't teach the kids classes as often as the other instructors, so it's always a treat when he does, because he always speaks kindly, always with a smile. You can tell these instructors love working with the kids. My only complaint is that there is one other instructor, whom I do not want to name, that a vastly different teaching style. Unlike all the other instructors, he speaks loudly (yells, actually) to the class. He is quite strict and intolerant, and has trouble getting the class in order, so he yells even more. He is actually a nice person, and the kids seem to like him regardless. It is interesting to see the difference. The quiet, calm, patient instructors have so much more control of the class, and the kids follow their lead with better self-control. The one loud, yelling, intolerant instructor usually has to struggle more and yell more to maintain control of the class, and again, the kids follow his lead with less self-control and less focus. We do love SMA, regardless of the one staff member. If he were to take a calmer approach to his teaching style, I would give them 5-stars. Oh, and the studio is very clean, and provides adequate seating, with good, stable wi-fi. I highly recommend Silva Martial Arts! read more
