The other half was learning and practicing moves to defend yourself. Rebecca and her assistant were super professional but also really friendly and accessible. We were all newbies and some of us (me) were really clueless and nervous, but they were so patient and efficient and clear with their instructions I felt really safe and supported. We all got to practice our moves with a dummy (Dave!) and with the teachers, and they made sure we got them right before we moved on. I left the class feeling confident, like I was more prepared and capable to handle threatening situations. I couldn't recommend this class more! Thank you so much to Rebecca and her assistant (whose name I somehow forgot again, I'm so sorry! You are so cool and amazing!) I was so impressed and inspired, I hope to see you all again at a future class.

The best part is that Rebecca goes over different self-defense methods so that you can figure out what feels the best for you. I have always been one to be proactive rather than reactive, so this class helped me overcome some fears. I hope I will never have to used the skills that Rebecca showed me, but I'm glad I know them for when the situation arises.

Under their guidance and mentoring, I feel that even as an adult I am growing stronger in mind, body, and spirit. SKA practice emphasizes the development of a strong mentality: polishing of techniques through extensive and exhaustive repetition, committing to one's attack, defense, and counterattack without flinching or bailing, and breaking through one's natural tendency to rest or give up in the face of fatigue or adversity. SKA practice at Saratoga is included with a current Southwest YMCA membership and a single annual SKA fee. Unlike some other martial arts organizations, SKA is a nonprofit organization that does not charge any fees for gradings or require members to purchase SKA-branded equipment. For anyone looking to strengthen their whole self and learn a martial art, I wholeheartedly recommend looking into practice with SKA.

Fast forward 10 years later, I am 25 lbs overweight (thanks covid!) and not fit. I couldn't even do a single proper push up. I had trouble sleeping at night and my lifestyle has become too sedentary. I know I need to get out of this funk and be healthy again. I tried coming back to my fave yoga studio, started running, and signed up in a nearby gym to work out myself. None has been too successful. I found myself injured and unmotivated. I passed XMA gym on my way home and I couldn't believe that there is a legit Martial arts gym near my house and I didn't know about it! So I emailed Payam (the owner) and introduced myself. I knew of Payam because he was part of the same fight camp as I was before (though I was already "retired" back then). I told Payam that I was so out of shape, I am not sure if I could keep up with his class. He's very kind and told me to check it out so I did. The first week, I was sore with joint paint and aches but for the first time in ages, I felt the familiar rush of endorphins. The class is never boring and I am always looking forward to come to this gym. Payam runs a tight ship and his class is amazing. You don't feel judged coming to this gym. You can be an athlete or you can be starting out, you only compete with the best version of yourself with Payam guiding you along the way. Now after a month, I feel in the right path. I sleep better, the muscle memory is back, and I start feeling on top of the world again. I lost a bit of weight but I know it's a matter of time if I keep it up. The body is just different and definitely not as soft. Even my 7 year old son starts noticing the change and he is so happy for me. In addition to Payam's class, I also come to Muay Thai class with coach Ed. He too is amazing like Payam. He holds pads for his students and teach them good techniques, no shortcut here.

They don't let their purple or blue belts do all the teaching - they get in there and break it down, examine the issues they see, and find great ways to explain and improve in those areas. They are great at teaching newer students, as as a white belt with a year or so of experience, the knowledge and ability jump in that have been very large. I feel like 3 months of time here is worth 2x the time I have spent elsewhere. The benefit (and also a downside) to the school is it is very small (for adults). You get a lot of personal attention and guidance. The downside is the classes can be small sometimes for adults, depending on the day and time. If you are an advanced BJJ artist it would be a great opportunity to get a lot of individual help from very experience practitioners. The facilities are extraordinary clean and well-maintained - as good as or better than many schools. I would eat lunch off their mats :)

Samurai BJJ also has a very strong kids program for those looking to get their children enrolled to build self-defense skills, discipline, and confidence. Facility is great with water dispenser, bathrooms, showers, and a good mat space. Very transparent about pricing. Highly recommended.

Brian was unprofessional, rude, and had a habit of belittling students. He made the learning environment uncomfortable by embarrassing people rather than constructively correcting them. While I understand that it's not an instructor's job to be friendly or to "hold our hands," there's a difference between being direct and being outright disrespectful--and Brian crossed that line. In terms of content, the class was heavily skewed toward theoretical discussions, such as legal frameworks for self-defense and broad topics on conflict and society. While some of this information was interesting and well-explained, it dominated the day, leaving little time for actual hands-on firearm training. The balance between theory and practical instruction was way off. Additionally, while Brian welcomed questions, he often responded by making students feel stupid instead of providing clear, direct answers. This approach, combined with his condescending attitude, discouraged people from asking questions at all. A firearms class should foster confidence and competence--not intimidation. I gave it 1 extra star because instructor Spencer was amazing. Overall, I did not gain much practical, in-depth knowledge about firearms or safety. If you're looking for a class that prioritizes hands-on training and a professional learning environment, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

He prides himself in using a "Socratic method" of teaching by responding to students' questions with another question. Even if he considers himself some sort of philosopher I would personally appreciated it if a simple question from a student such as "how does this work?" could be addressed more directly instead of being answered with "how do YOU think it works?" Simply said, it would have been a more efficient and pleasant experience for everyone if he could just put his narcissism and fragile ego aside. All in all, I have some gratitude towards Monarch because I did learn something over the course of my time there. However, since then I've moved away and sought training elsewhere I've realized that there are many training centers and instructors out there that are much much better, both in teaching methodologies and credentials, especially you're willing to leave California.
