This cute little Spanish restaurant in Winnipeg is night time crew friendly. It seems to have something for everyone. The midnight birds seem comfortable here even though it was a cold winter period of time. The food is pretty delicious. My crepe was very sweet and succulent. My friend liked his coffee a lot. Seated 7 for an early lunch. Very pleasant server offered suggestions and substitutions. The food was delicious. I had the Chimichurri wrap with the chicken and bacon. 3.5/5 Hermanos was one of my first stops when I first moved to Winnipeg, as a hotel ad for this place advertised it as an "Argentinian restaurant", something that I've never tried before. Turns out it was pretty much a Brazilian restaurant, which is alright since I haven't had that in a while as well. The ambience is quite dark, so taking photos of my food was quite hard. I ordered the moqueca, which was a seafood stew with mussels, clams, crab meat, and fish in a coconut broth. It was decent, but the portions were quite small (although for $22 I can't really complain). I've had better seafood in other places, although for a restaurant in Winnipeg it does its job. Service was slow and our server never showed up till 10 minutes after we sat down. It didn't feel it was busy at all (it was a Sunday night), so I guess it is something this place has to work on. It's not a place I will frequently visit, but if someone requests to come here I definitely wouldn't say no. read more

Came here a couple years ago with my husband for dinner. We had already made reservations, and didn't have to wait too long until we were seated at a table. The restaurant was very busy and there were lots of people waiting by the entrance for a table. Music plus with all the people trying to talk over each other, made it hard to hold a conversation and hard to hear one another. Fortunately, we got a table in the far back corner, which was somewhat okay, as the noise level wasn't too bad and we could still hear each other talk. We received complimentary bread to snack on as we waited for our food. We ended up ordering the La Cabrera to share, which consisted of a 24oz angus ribeye cooked medium rare, served with port reduced mushrooms and bacon, grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes ($69). The steak was very flavourful and juicy, and I would definitely recommend it. We also shared a large paella as well, which usually comes with shrimp, sausage, chicken, seasonal fish, mussels, lime, cooked in a spicy coconut tomato broth ($39), but because my husband doesn't eat seafood, they were very accommodating and made it without the seafood for us. As others have mentioned in reviews, they ask for your reservation, but there is clearly no need for it as we went at a time that should have been busy for any restaurant. Well, since my 2009 review, when Hermanos first opened, I have been here many times over for lunches, drinks and dinners. I have to say that they are definitely getting better with time. I think changing chefs a few times has helped as well. First off, this is not a true South American restaurant as they even state themselves, they are "inspired" by South American flavours. This place takes those Latin flavours but makes them interesting without intimidating people too much. Heart of Palm Tomato Salad ($11) - great light salad as I love heart of palm and the vinaigrette they use. The beer battered pickerel tacos ($11) is disappointing as there wasn't much flavour in this entire dish - that includes the corn relish as it tasted very bland for some strange reason. The gringo burger ($11) with cheddar and aioli is a very filling lunch item though I can't say it's a great burger, just tastes like a regular restaurant burger. The freshly fried chips are good though. I'd skip the bread board. I know the bread board is popular but the breads and the spreads aren't that interesting so I'd rather spend my tapas $ on other items like the mussels, empanadas or calamari. For dinner, I think their best items are their meat dishes. Their most popular at the restaurant and one of my faves is the "baby cabrera" ($32) - 12 ounce Angus ribeye, spiced rub and drizzled with aged balsamic vinegar. The steak has a little more char than I prefer on a steak but it's cooked perfectly at medium rare - juicy and very flavourful with the balsamic vinegar. It comes with grilled veggies, smashed potatoes and mushrooms with bacon. The 9 ounce Argentinean strip ($21) is a great price for a steak dinner dish if you want something a bit smaller and much leaner than the ribeye though I didn't think their chimichurri was as flavourful as it could be but it's still good. The paella ($19) is pretty good but best to share amongst a few people as opposed to a single entree dish. Good flavour but I didn't find it particularly spicy. The service can be very hit and miss as lunch service can take a very long time. For the most part, servers are nice but sometimes seem overworked as they are covering too many tables. Seating in certain sections can be very tightly packed together so I prefer the large banquette section of the restaurant. Good place to take out of town guests and to hang out with friends. It's quite noisy so not the most romantic place for an intimate dinner unless you go on a slower weeknight. Good steakhouse alternative for carnivores but I think vegetarians would be very limited in their selection. read more

We are not from the area and were looking for a comfortable sit down dinner spot on our walk through the entertainment district tonight and found Hermanos. The exterior, interior, signage and cartoonish menu font suggested it'd be a more casual experience than it seemed it was aiming for when we entered. When we walked in the welcome staff asked if we had a reservation - the place was practically empty and the white table linens seemed overdone in the otherwise warm yet casual environment. Based on the decor and emptiness we were confused and asked if we needed one and were told it was suggested but we were fine. Ok. All the servers we saw were young women wearing fitted short black dresses - most were shorter than mid-thigh and a few had strategically-placed sheer designs. *Women should wear whatever they want* but this was obviously a management decision and weird in a dining environment, especially one that seems as though it's trying to be higher end. Our server was great and the food was above average and fine for the price point. The chips with aioli, hummus and tapenade, and grill for two were quite nice. The ambiance was just notably weird. The first thing you see when you walk in is the bar with crumbling mosaic tile. All of this is otherwise hardly worth mentioning but stands out and seems quite odd for a place that suggests reservations. read more

This place was excellent with their steaks and South American twist. The restaurant was brightly lit with a nice decor that makes you feel comfortable. I went with my colleagues during a business trip but wanted to avoid steak after eating it last night. Compared to the night before, the steak was prepared the way I like it, rare, with sides of corn on the cob and other South American treats. For the price and considering it was not a chain, I was pleasantly surprised. There are lots of drinks to choose from but I landed on a red although they had many that were interesting. We ended up giving another 20% tips. This is a cheating behaviour. We could give you 35% tips but not in this way. This will be the last time I go to your place. Came here with a group of 5, and we were seated right away. That's as good as it got. We waited and waited for our server to come take our order, and once she did it was 30+ minutes until the food arrived. While waiting, our server did not check up on us once to fill glasses or anything. When our meals arrived, two of the plates (a steak and chicken skewers) were cold. Finally, when we were finished we had to chase our sever down to get the bills. I always try to give the benefit of the doubt to servers, as I've also waited tables before and I know better that to assign all the blame to a servers when the kitchen might be backed up, but seeing as other reviews consistently cite poor service, and the restaurant wasn't busy, there's clearly a service issue here. For food I can only speak to the fish tacos, which I do not recommend. When the plate came out I immediately noticed the entire meal (tacos + chips) was brown! I would have liked a little colour to freshen it up -- green cabbage, avocado, or fresh tomatoes for example. A brown meal just looks so heavy. The fish was overly battered, and as a result, incredibly oily, and the salsa that came with it was sour in an off way. The in-house made chips were superb, though! Hermanos is very overpriced for what it is. I took my sister here for lunch for her birthday and it was a great place to celebrate with some sisterly love! The staff was super friendly and the service was really fast. The restaurant is beautiful, blending the historic building with contemporary lights and art. I love the brick walls and the wood floors as it makes for a very comfortable environment. I love when restaurants leave a bottle of water on the table and Hermanos' glass bottles are just stunning! We didn't need water though as we were both having a liquid lunch, enjoying a great selection of wines with the meal. My lunch choice was the lamb burger with side salad was incredible. Hands down, THE BEST LAMB BURGER I've ever had. It was just perfect. The salad was great too but the lamb burger totally shone as the lunch star. My sister had the grilled ribeye skewers and it was cooked to perfection. She enjoyed all of the sides that came with it, including the house made chips. Winnipeg welcomes its latest ethnic flair in Hermanos - a Brazilian inspired restaurant located in the Exchange District. Although parking is always a challenge (especially during Theater night), Hermanos is positioned right across from the historic Ashdown Warehouse. Although the infrastructure and interior design does not speak to Brazil, the warm hues and comfortable environment speaks to the dollars this new ownership group must have invested in the establishment. A white table cloth was placed on every table and cutlery was reasonably clean and presented on the table. The menu was straightforward and the Tapas looked somewhat interesting. Water was ordered as the drink of choice and unfortunately tasted off, almost tin-like. They need to let the tap water run longer next time. I understand the Chef is not from Brazil, but has diverse experience throughout the city of Winnipeg. Unfortunately, this comes through as the menu did not speak to authentic Brazilian fare as the entrees and their related ingredients could have been found in almost any restaurant of this price range. Main: Rack of Lamb - Herb onion and mustard rubbed, corn flake crusted, roasted and finished with a blackberry balsamic glaze. This was a true disappointment. The lamb was poorly bought and tasted "livery". The balsamic glaze was not infused or introduced into the meat in any meaningful way and the herbs lacked any real zest. The plate was garnished with asparagus (good) and potatoes on a narrow, wooden cutting board. I know this is a relatively new restaurant, so I won't judge them on a few other obvious issues: a) food came cold, b) waiter had little knowledge on the menu, c) the overall experience was more than two hours and d) they need to improve the description of certain foods to manage expectations (e.g. BBQ Salmon seemed under done and that is what they intended to my surprise). Finally, I understand that one of the managing partners is from a very high end restaurant located in the Forks. I would have thought, just from that, the restaurant would have been operating more efficiently. I guess time will tell. This place bills itself as an "authentic South American steakhouse," and I suppose for the location and market it can get away with it. Most of the options are an interpretation of Argentine/Uruguayan/Brazilian dishes, but they are made very much to appeal to generic North American palates and lose much of the charm of those countries' cuisine. So with their cool concept, I was expecting more. I had to send the steak back, or rather, even the waitress realized it was raw and wasn't what I asked for. The empanadas, while good for what they were, are not "authentic" Argentine or Uruguayan. The dough and shape are off, as well as the filling. The filling is what you'd expect from someone that was trying to appeal to "generic Latin-inspired palate." The chimichurri tastes like plain, watery parsley and olive oil...where is the punch? The canelones were warmed-over and could have come straight out of a supermarket. Overall it's too overpriced for what uninspiring stuff you get. Were it more authentic and/or tastier, I'd have no problem with the price. read more

My wife and I have dined at Hermanos twice now with mixed reviews. The decor gave a South American feel with an atmosphere to match. They have a pretty large menu consisting on dishes from all over South America. The prices are very reasonable for what you are getting. The first visit was a Saturday night, and the place was bustling. We had Empanadas for appetizers which were fabulous. For the entree we both had the Brazilian steak. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the seasoning was just right. Overall they hit the mark with good atmosphere, service, food, and price. Our second visit was not as good as the first. The fact we were dining on a Monday evening may have had something to do with it. The restaurant was not very busy, and it appeared the 2nd string staff was working this night. We had the Argentinean steak, and it was not well prepared at all. The service was adequate, but nothing comparing to the first visit. If it weren't for such a great experience the first time we would not be recommending this place at all. I would have to say go on a weekend where you have the best chance at good service and food. read more

Although I really do like Hermanos, I was a little disappointed the last time I went. The food is still good and as a vegetarian, I like that the veggie options actually have some thought put into them rather than just offering a veggie burger. (I'm a big fan of the breaded eggplant.) What I am NOT a fan of is how snooty the waitress was when I was there last week. The only time she smiled at my girlfriend and I (and it was an incredibly forced smile) was when we were leaving. When she was preparing the debit machine for payment, rather than politely ask me for my card, she merely stuck her hand in my face to get it. We spent Valentine's Day lunch here at Hermanos. It was great, we couldn't fault it. The staff where very helpful and looked after us very well even though it was busy and they where preparing for the evening celebrations. Whilst there we had garlic shrimp and an Alaskan salmon ceviche dish. Both where excellent and we couldn't get enough. Also, the pisco sours where very good... the only downside is that they came with ice which was a downer for us, but we still enjoyed every sip. I'll start by saying we are typically not complainers. We have both worked in the hospitality industry for many years and frequently eat out at restaurants of all kinds and prices. Our experience started off well. We were on our way to a show and in very good moods. They have Cashaca and make Caipirinhas (I spent many months travelling in Brasil and this brought back instant memories which I began sharing, it was a great start and we were laughing and having a great time!) We ordered the mussels to start. The sauce was quite nice and we were happy with them. Up to this point the service was quite ho hum, we were certainly finishing our drinks faster than they were checking on them. We decided to do tapas from here. Next were some chicken skewers with mango salsa. The mango salsa was pretty bland, no pop at all. Not terrible by any means but over priced and would simply not order it again, would choose something different. Next was the empinadas, you get three and we asked for one of each. We also ordered a bottle of wine at this point. This is where things started to turn for us. They came out extremely dark! I mean really dark brown to blackish in areas. They tasted it too, a hint of burnt. We tried our best but couldn't finishing it. We decided to go for the beer battered fish tacos now (In hindsight I blame us for this having ordered them after the empinada experience). The fish came out exactly the same, really dark, overcooked with a burnt taste. Not appetizing at all. We did not eat even half of it. At this point we decided to say something. We simply let them know that the last two dishes were overcooked and there might be an issue with the oil (needs to be changed!). They basically acted insulted (we were very polite about it) and made us feel like WE did something wrong. After this they basically shunned us, they did not return to ask us if we needed anything EVER again. We eventually asked for the bill. More disapointment, it was high! One of the reasons for this was that they have two versions of the wine we ordered (one is a reserve). Well he didn't make that clear and ask us which one we wanted, he just brought the more expensive one when i thought i ordered the other one! More burnt taste in our mouth. The other reason is the place is just expensive to begin with. I should say they offered us a free desert which we declined. There was also 15% taken off the empinadas (about $3 on a $200 bill, which made it feel worse I think). We don't mind nice restaurants and the price tags that go with them, IF you're getting the quality food and service that goes with it. This place had neither. For that kind of money we will not be back as this city is filled with excellent restaurants. read more

After my second trip here I feel it is time to make a review. over all the place was OK, and the food was taste. We had some of the tapas dishes and found the one call the dips to have one of the two dips to be very good and the other to be so-so. The rest of the meal was well prepared and tasted good. but in the end I can not rise above a three for the place. Great food. I am in Winnipeg a couple of times a year, and my in-laws took us there for dinner. The pickerel tacos were fantastic. My wife took one home, it was a lot of food. I had the empanadas, and was surprised by the serving size, quite generous. I had paired this with the cashew salad, which was a real treat. Really liked the pineapple with cinnamon. Generally Tapas items are smaller servings, so this was a pleasant surprise. Perhaps next trip I can talk the rest of them in to ordering several plates to share... Service was great, never had to look for a drink refill or anything else - she just appeared like she knew we needed something. The rest of the family had other menu items and it all looked great. The food here was very good, but I was disappointed with my experience. I had booked a table on line the week before we went. I specified it was for my wife's 50th birthday. I followed up with a phone call 4 days before asking for a private table if possible. I also asked if I should bring a candle or sparkler for in her dessert. She told me she would make a note on our reservation for that and would put a sparkler in her dessert if my wife ordered one. We got there and we're sat in the lounge at the front door. I ask about another table and was told, that was the best they had. It was so loud we could hardly hear each other. Eventually a table near us left and the volume was better. The waitress was nice but busy and we felt rush. Sitting in front of a big screen TV watching basketball is not my idea of birthday celebration. No sparkler in the dessert but a table near us got one. Then we waited over 20 minutes to pay the bill. Could have been a nice experience if they paid attention to my request. We actually had a party for about 70 people here. Noel, the manager, took fantastic care of us, and the staff for the evening were phenomenal. The food here is FANTASTIC. It was so good that a few members of our company went back multiple times the week we were in town. Noel also suggested a samba (?) band that played in the restaurant regularly- and they were almost as good as the food. I visited Hermanos last night with two friends who were celebrating their birthdays. We had tried to make a reservation in the dining area but were told none available. First time experience for us all and I will rate the food as very good. Compliments to the chef.!!!! Unfortunately the rest was not. I arrived early so was able to get a nice lounge site with comfy chairs. My friends arrived later, and the waitress asked us for drinks. I had a glass of wine and my friends wanted a bar menu. She brought it and then left for a few minutes - they ordered and then my birthday friend asked if they could have the $28 dine- about menu. The waitress said "no" it was the policy to not serve that in the lounge area. My friend said it was hers and her friends birthdays and were told by the phone staff that we could have anything on the menu. Again she said no, but noticed that she went to a manager. He came back immediately and told us it was fine and that we could order anything we liked ! The waitress returned and from then on her face had a stone expression - she took our orders - we asked for water and she brought us the water, then, asked if my friends wanted their drinks and not long after, our food arrived - hot and we all enjoyed it. The waitress never returned to out table after to ask if we needed other drinks or more water. She never refilled the water container in 2 1/2 hrs. We tried to see if she would catch our attention and only ONCE came over to ask if we needed another drink. We were there for almost 4 hours and had one drink and had exhausted the water! I guess we could have gone up to the bar - but I think that was not expected of our party. Carlo Castillo was playing and we could not hear him over the crowd in the lounge. I think it would be better having having Carlo and Sheila in the dining area where he would be better appreciated. He is an excellent entertainer! We had to ask for our bill and unfortunately she did not get a tip - nothing ! I know her name and hope to call the manager with this girl's total lack of customer service. On birthdays should not staff at last say "Happy Birthday". She would have got a 20% tip from me - if she had been cordial. Hoping no gets to experience her coldness! read more

Not a bad place for supper. My father and I found it slightly over priced. I ordered the Natal Salad and my dad had the Paella. My salad was fresh and tasty (however, they neglected to put my dressing on the side as requested). It was small for a $14 meal salad. My dad's Paella was larger and was hot when it came out. He asked for no muscles because he is allergic and they were accommodating. They replaced the muscles with crab meat. He found it was quite spicy but it does warn you of that on the menu.
