A Too 50 Canadian restaurant? More than happy to see for myself what the fuss was all about! It's a pretty low key and casual place, which was perfect for a group of us on business that didn't want to spend the night getting to know each other over fancy table settings and dim lighting. The appetizers were a great start to our meal. How can you go wrong with squid stuffed with sausage and cheese?! I would've devoured the whole plate myself if it wasn't for my business associates... I had the carbonara for dinner and the egg yolk topper was excellent! The pizzas were good too, although it is something I have to crave. Dessert round was a solid ending, but I will probably go with the goat milk cheesecake next time opposed to the tiramisu that didn't leave much of an impression. read more

The interior is a modern and airy space; it was a nice summer evening so we took advantage of sitting on the patio. The patio is designed in a way that you don't even really notice that you're sitting on Academy Road - a fairly busy street. This is a delicious place for gourmet pizza so if you're looking for a big pizza loaded with familiar toppings at bargain basement prices - this is not the place for you. But if you like fresh gourmet ingredients cooked simply than Pizzeria Gusto is a great pick. The menu has a lot of appy's ranging from meatballs, grilled shrimps, calamari and brushchetta around $8-$10. The "gambero" ($10) grilled shrimp was good but nothing spectacular and a little bland. There are about 4-5 salads that are also about $10. I tried the "Altezza" ($10) - beet salad with candied walnuts and goat cheese as well as the Caprese salad ($11). The beet salad is good but very similar to something I make at home so I wasn't really blown away by it but a great choice for those who want to try something different. The Caprese salad was light and refreshing and served with fresh buffalo mozzarella, shredded basil and super juicy, ripe tomatoes. Also, I really liked the addition of the pesto on the Caprese salad - gives it a lot more flavour than just the regular drizzle of olive oil. The appy's and salads are shareable but I'd say the portions are more fit for an individual size. All the pizzas are 10" and are about $15-$20. I tried the "Ryall" pizza ($16), which the server said is a fav here by diners. It's a vegetarian pizza topped with caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, goat cheese, artichokes, fresh-buffalo mozzarella, and micro greens. I love goat cheese and artichokes so this was a great pick for me! The pizza isn't greasy at all. The crust is thin and slightly chewy - my favourite kind. I like that you can taste all the ingredients and not feel overly stuffed like you normally do with other pizzas. There are a about 3 or 4 non-pizza entrees on the menu but why go here if you're not going to try a pizza. Went on a Wednesday night and there were several tables available at 7 pm but it's a very busy place otherwise so be prepared to wait or go on a off-peak hours/days. Service was friendly but we needed to get the attention of our server a few times. This summer a couple of friends and I decided to try something different than the usual patios of Corydon, that's when we came across this gem on Academy. Pizzeria Gusto's patio was clean, modern and just all around beautiful! After consulting with our adorable, attentive (and gorgeous) server, Micheal, about the vegetarian options the girls and I decided to try the Ryall pizza and the Bruschetta del Giorno. The pizza was DELICIOUS, however the bruschetta was a little water-y for my taste. For drinks, we decided to try an Italian beer that I'm not even going to attempt to remember the name of, because like many of the items on the menu it was something completely foreign to someone with a 100% english speaking tongue. I made a reservation 3 weeks in advance for a special occasion. When we arrived we were seated at the bar area. Since I had read previous reviews I knew they might try to seat us there so I asked to be moved somewhere else but they said they were fully booked. What is the point in making a reservation if you're going to be seated at the bar? I had to ask again and explain myself before they agreed to move us. Best pizza I've ever had outside of Italy. I compare all other pizza places to Pizzeria Gusto. You can tell that a lot of care has been put into this restaurant. They brought the pizza over in from Italy and hand selected all of the wine from different regions. It's a small restaurant and fills up quickly everytime I've been there for dinner. It's best to make a reservation. I also LOVE the patio in the summer. Usually if you don't make a reservation you get stuck sitting at the wood facing either the bar and bartender or the cooks making the pizza's which can get a little warm. It's a nice modern decor with maybe 12 tables? The prices are a little bit higher than your typical pizza place, but it's because the toppings are all really fresh and very unique. This isn't a place where you go for a regular pepperoni and cheese. The pizza's are all individual size so you order just one for yourself. It's always filled me up! The servers have always been good - but they have never been able to memorize all of the weekly specials, which is fine. They usually have 5 different ones a night. read more

I have eaten here twice and both times the food was very good. We ordered two pizzas: - Quatro Fromaggi (with a cracked egg on it) - Ryall Both of these pizzas satisfied our craving. The Quatro Fromaggi was especially good with the egg on top. There is a wide range of options and flavors with the meat pizzas, and for once there is also a respectable range of vegetarian options. LET'S TALK CHEESE PEOPLE! If you're a pizza lover, you cannot skip this place. Everything about it is totally fantastic. where to start? Parking? Not an issue. There is parking at the back of the restaurant and also all along the street and side streets. As soon as we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by a hostess and a waitress. It was pretty busy inside but there were a few open tables. We were seated right away by our hostess and were given menus. Ive eaten here a few times before so i had an idea of what i wanted. We ordered the app that has a variety of cheese and meats and pickled vegetables. The variety is spectacular. The cheeses are imported, so you know they are going to be good. And they also pickle the vegetables right there at the restaurant! I noticed there were a few changes to this app (like the bread and cheese), but they were all for the better. I highly recommend it! We ordered 2 pizzas for our entree. They arrived in a timely matter as always. I have always enjoyed the pizzas ive ordered from here, but this particular time i decided to try out something new. Unfortunately it wasnt for me. It was a bit too plain for my liking. but I still rate this place a 5 for their amazing service and amazing food. It's been at least 2 years since I ate this place, and I still name it when people ask me where the best pizza I've ever had was. The menu is decently sized, enough options to satisfy every taste bud and unique enough so you're not paying premium just for your standard margherita (although there's nothing wrong with that). I got the Regina Egitto, which was a real risk for me because I never like to mix fruit with savory (the Regina has shaved pear on it). Boy was I wrong. Everything came together perfectly -- literally the perfect balance of sweet from the pear, salty from the cheese and prosciutto, earthiness from the olive oil/rosemary, and the slight acidity/bitterness of the citrusy arugula. My friends went with different pizzas; I tried them and while they were definitely great, we all agreed that mine was the best --so if you come here, it is my top recommendation. Other than the food, everything was great. Service was super accommodating, good drinks, and a great modern/trendy atmosphere. This place is amazing... And not just for Winnipeg. Seriously some of the best pizza I've had. I split the 887 and the Lucia and both were fantastic (sharesies). Wonderful attentive servers that were so great I didn't ever notice an empty water glass or them refilling. I rarely find a restaurant with nothing to complain about, and this is one. While you may be tempted to eat the meatball alone...I strongly recommend eating the meatball with the accompanying wood fired toasts. Have been here twice in the last few weeks and was disappointed both times. First time, we were sat at the bar - when the restaurant was empty. The feature scallops were $30 - for two scallops and the plate was cleared before we could finish. My companion had the Margherita pizza, but the toppings were sparse at best. Another group of friends decided to try it out this past weekend and I had chalked my last visit up to bad luck....so tried again. The service was slightly impersonal and the pizza came out cold and barely had sauce on it (2/3 of us didn't enjoy our meal). Sadly, I probably won't be back for a long time. In the midst of the glacial shit show known as the holidays this place is a momentary lapse of bliss.Every pizza is well executed and wonderfully bizarre.Their flavours are unapologetic and void of cliche.Their cocktail list varies from affordable to luxurious which is certainly a good sign. I was getting together with friends for lunch and Pizzeria Gusto was suggested as the meeting place. Well, when we arrived, it was closed. The person who I'm guessing is the owner, came out and told us they are closed on Sundays. So, we ended up going elsewhere. I did go back a few days later with my sister and I'm soooo glad I did. We did have to wait about 15-20 min. for a table. The restaurant is small and intimate and it was full that day. The staff were all very friendly. We started with an appetizer which I can not recall the name of but it was a beet salad which was simply delicious. I would go back for that salad alone. For dinner, we both ordered pizza. I had the Waterloo which consisted of potatoes and pistachios among other things. My sister had the Commish which had mainly sweet potatoes and pine nuts. Both delicious. My sister said that her had her husband will be going back soon. My brothering had the leftovers and said it was the best pizza he had in a long time. I unfortunately was just visiting Winnipeg so will not be able to go back until September when I m back in Winnipeg. We did not have dessert as we had planned to go to the Cupecakery afterwards but the desert menu looked yummy and I will definitely have to try something next time I'm back. Also, it looked like they were renovating a patio which would be fantastic for those warm summer nights. read more

After a stellar start, this place quickly became the most overrated and overpriced spot in the 'hood. If you want great food and wine, go to Bonfire Bistro. Gusto has disappointed me more times than not, and sometimes my meals have been downright awful. By comparison, I've only had one bad meal at Bonfire out of at least 30 outings. A new local favourite! It deserves 4.5 stars, but I'm giving it 5 stars because i see places like Slices and Mona Lisa have 5 stars so I'll rate Pizzeria Gusto relative to those standards. I live in the neighbourhood, and I'm always happy to have more restaurants nearby... Modern feel with minimal decor, the place seats around 60. I think they are opening another room or maybe a patio at some point. Anyway, it's nice inside. There are often lineups around dinner time. Last I checked, they don't take reservations. You can swing by, put your name on the list, and go bowl a few games at Academy lanes or have a drink at J. Fox's if you need to kill some time. The pizza is different from anything I've had before, featuring toppings like fig jam. I can't remember the name of my favourite pizza (787 or something) but it involves a few meats and is delicious. All of the pizzas were priced from $10 to $20. They have appetizers and other entrees (usually pasta). The other things on the menu were very tasty, although I wasn't a fan of the grilled calamari (served cold). Just not my thing, and a few people I've talked to have agreed but there are lots of other things to order that will make you happy. For dessert, I have only tried the panna cotta and found it quite good. This place also has a great wine selection featuring predominantly italian wines (I want to say exclusively but can't say for sure). Great pizza for a reasonable price. Worth checking out! read more

Had another disappointing dining experience at pizzeria gusto. Their pizza always seems to be ill conceived and mediocre at best. I had one bite of my pizza and the waitress didn't bother to ask whether there was something wrong when I decided not to take the rest of it home. So not only was the pizza unpalatable but the service was disappointing. This is definitely one of my favourite pizza restaurants in town! I've been here twice and it's always busy here even on a Tuesday so make sure to make a reservation if you're going! The restaurant has a nice ambient, which makes a perfect setting for date nights. My Significant Other and I ordered The Don, which is similar to a Meat Lover pizza, and Regina Egitto, which was recommended by the chef. That was the perfect amount of food for the two of us. The food is a bit more pricey but it's totally worth it. If you would like a good show that is put on by the chef, I'd recommend going on the weekends. Overall, I'd highly recommend this restaurant to all those pizza lovers! read more

One word. Fantastic. The service was personal and informative without being cloying, which is our preference. Our server quickly identified this as our first visit, and proceeded to review the menus with us, both food and wine, and went through the appetizer and main course specials. We settled on the Caesar Salad, the 887 pizza and an off-menu pasta (the Talby) which is conchiglie pasta with red onion, wild mushroom, pancetta and arugula in a white wine sauce. The place is very noisy, but there were all types of people there, not just the usual "Academy Rd. Hipsters". I would have had a glass of wine, but at $9 for the cheapest glass I took a pass. We were a group of 10 ranging in ages from 65 to 14 and everyone agreed the pizzas were good. I had the Lucia, with some kind of sausage, cambozola, fig jam, caramelized onions and arugula. It was nice with an interesting sweet aftertaste. I also had the salad with Arugula and fennel which I found bland, under-dressed and lacking in an kind of flavour. Should have gone with my first instinct and had the beet salad, as someone else in our party did and they enjoyed it. Another person had the Rustico salad with the same complaints as I had. Those who did not order pizza were also happy with their entrees. The Fish special which I believe was Northern Pike was tasty and had some interesting accompaniments, but the presentation was in a bowl and everything was sort of crammed in. In general I found their presentation to be somewhat pretentious- The cute little pizza cutter forks were totally useless and the "photo framed" dessert menus just seemed pointless. The Brussel sprouts and the marrow bones were also good according to my fellow diners. The Budino dessert was okay but needed a bit more of the olive oil and sea salt they promised. The flour-less chocolate cake was okay. So, all in all- food was good, but none of us thought it was "Outstanding" or "The best I ever ate". They don't "do" cappuccino or regular coffee but there is a whole treatise in their menu on how to drink your espresso with grappa. I don't need instructions on how to drink the coffee you choose for me, thank you. The prices were too high IMHO. The service was friendly and quick and the surroundings were pleasant except for a distracting plasma TV on the wall right behind us that played The Good, The Bad and The Ugly on continuous loop. I went to Pizzeria Gusto on a day where we were literally the ONLY people in the restaurant and the service was pathetic. Mostly, the food was mediocre. Except for the one pizza that was burned - that was just awful. The waitress didn't bother asking how the meal was because she could see that we had left the charred mess on our plate. I've been to nicer pizzerias in NY and LA where the prices were more reasonable and the food was actually good and prepared well. read more
