Recently tried Corrientes for lunch with someone who I wanted to network with. They have very good and affordable lunch specials, and it does fill you up very well. I went with the Classic Empanadas Lunch, after my colleague suggested the empanadas here. The mac and cheese empanada looked interesting so I had one of those, and my second choice was a pulled pork empanada. For the price I paid I was satisfied with the quality. The mac and cheese empanada did taste a little weird, but the pulled pork empanada had fresh pulled pork and was very juicy. The salad to start was also tasty, and I'm personally not a huge salad fan (I rather the soup, but their soup of the day wasn't to my liking so I went for the salad instead). It was my first time trying empanadas and I was happy with what I got. Definitely a place I'd recommend for an affordable lunch. read more

Ordered a pizza for delivery over the weekend. Possibly the worst pizza I've ever had. I took the first slice, and it went completely limp and all the toppings fell off. It was not at all cooked. The dough was still raw, yet the outer crust was almost completely burnt. After I put it into my oven, I took a bite and all I tasted was salt. No flavour, I may as well have poured a salt shaker into my mouth. I thought maybe it was just the one bite. Next bite? A long, black hair in the melted cheese. Me? I'm fair haired and buzz my hair short. It definitely wasn't my hair. I go to contact? Closed for the night. Essentially $40 wasted on food I couldn't possibly eat. I wish I could give this a zero, but can't. I'm definitely never touching this place again. Disgusting. read more

I went back recently to try this place a second time. It was a beautiful day so we opted to sit outside, where there are a few tables set on the sidewalk. If you end up sitting here, you should go inside to order and pay first then the server will bring your food out (at least that's what we were told when we assumed that it was table service just like the inside of the restaurant). Also, if you want some vino, note that they don't have a liquor license for the tables outside so if you want a drink, sit inside the restaurant. Anyhow, I like the seating outside even if it's a little squishy as it's set on the sidewalk. I opted for the their lunch special because I didn't enjoy their pizza on the first go around. The lunch special is $9.95 for any 1 empanada with a side salad. Unfortunately it's a really small portion for lunch, I wasn't even super hungry and I felt like I needed at least another empanada or at least a larger salad. So my advice is to add an extra empanada if you opt for the lunch special. I wanted to like this place but it just hasn't worked out for me. Oh well, like I said in my previous review, Simon's Cuisine still has the best tasting empanadas and best value too. read more

We arrived before the dinner rush, were greeted at the door, even though we had no reservation we were able to pick a table. The service was amazing, very attentive. My boyfriend and I had a beer and the Chefs Choice Wine mix, which was a little pricey for a glass but definitely worth it. For appetizers the empanadas were the perfect size, followed by the 'Manitoban' pizza. For dessert we ordered the Flan and Dulce de Leche Crepe. Amazing. The only thing that makes me sad about the whole experience is that I won't be able to come back anytime soon because I live in Calgary. read more

Corrientes is ideally located as a pre-theatre stop bore a play at the MTC. We ventured down for some munchies and overall enjoyed the selections and service. Sadly they have a limited selection of beer on tap, i.e. no IPA. Reasonable selection of wines to order by the glass. The Malbec was 'okay'. The Cuban melt, pork, , was full of goodies. The meat was tender and a nice assortment of fillings. The outside crust was thin and crunchy. I found the mustard was a bit over-powering but would likely order it again and ask for more garlic mayo and less mustard. The potato side salad was pretty non-descript. Lacked flavour. A bowl of almost cooked potato cubes. The spinach empenada was really tasty and the side sauce, like a chimichuri, was outstanding. Danger - if you're going to order the Gianduia, be prepared to share. It so rich and so chocolaty, in a great way that you have to share. Cappuccino was okay. Not a fan of having it in a thin, glass mug, but it did the job of balancing the rich chocolate in the dessert. Very good service especially with a group of people all trying to leave at the same time for the theater. read more

The day we went was busy and the only spot we could get in the restaurant was a small outdoor cafe-style table for two in the back. It was shorter than the rest of the tables and the server had to kneel to converse face-to-face with us, or else tower above us. It was sort of a fun atmosphere and the awkwardness of our table height made the whole place feel friendlier. That in turn helped make up for the fact that we were dressed the cold, not for going out for dinner. We ordered: - Rucula Pizza - Humita empanada - Argentine Beer My wife and I thought that the food was tasty but not exceptional. Our omnivorous friends were quick to point out that the meat pizzas are really good. I can't confirm or deny that. However, it is probably true because our main complaint about the vegetarian food was that it needed more salt. A vegetarian dish shouldn't just be a meat dish without meat. It needs to be something unto itself, and part of that is compensating for the lower salt content of vegetables. This is a restaurant that seems to be better for omnivores. So, if you are omnivorous my advice is reserve a table ahead of time and try it for yourself. read more

We visited this quaint pizzeria on February 8th and had a great experience. Reservations are simple on their website. This service is provided through urbanspoon, which also sends a reminder email. When we arrived, the soft-spoken waiter took us to a small 2 person table that wobbled. With so many other tables available, the waitress wasted no time in finding us a sturdy table. We were keen to try some of their wide selection of wines. While only a few are available by the glass, the prices by the bottle are quite reasonable and they will cork them for you to take home. The waitress was not well acquainted with the wines offered but was able to answer our questions after checking with someone else. The Ciao! Dine About Winnipeg event (http://accesswinnipeg.com/2013/01/ciao-dine-about-winnipeg-2013-returns-february-2-12/) was on so we took advantage of the offer. For $28, we could choose from 2 appetizers (empanadas with either spicy beef or ham & cheese), 2 pizzas (Chivito or Crudo), and it also included a dessert of chocolate soufflé with ice cream and chocolate ganache. We decided to try one of each. The spicy beef empanada was full of flavour and delicious. The ham empanada was tasty as well, but lighter. Of the pizzas, I preferred the Crudo. It was topped with prosciutto, sundried tomatoes, and Buffalo mozzarella. The sundried tomatoes were rich and juicy and blended wonderfully with the cheese. I would definitely order this again. The Chivito was topped with shaved angus rib eye, bacon, ham, hard boiled eggs, onion, banana peppers, provolone and mozzarella. This small restaurant, which opened in July 2012, is owned by Noel Bernier. He also owns Hermanos, just down the street, and is opening a Brazilian BBQ restaurant called Carnaval at the corner of Bannatyne & Waterfront this month. I've been here 3 times in the last 6 months. Each time the food and service have been fantastic. This is a family owned restaurant so they have a lot invested to make sure their customers are treated right. Nadia, our server, is also the daughter of the owners, she is always very helpful and witty as me and my friends can sometimes be a handful to work with. On our second visit we even helped her out with her home plumbing problems. The pizza is always good but the lamb empanadas are unbelievable!! We will definitely be back for another visit in the new year. read more

The headline is: there's a lot of things right with it. But the slow service is what really drags down my review. We happened into Corrientes during a downtown power outage, which re-directed us its way. While the food and drink were great (we all ate some of their delicious cuban sandwiches) the service was slow even though the place wasn't overly busy. The menu looks pretty great, and the quality of the cubanos would lead me to believe it would make for a tasty meal. Maybe I'd sit inside the restaurant next time though, to see if the speed of service improves. read more

Fantastic local pizza with some unique flavours. The Steve B pizza topped with chicken & peanut butter is a new love of mine. It sounds adventurous but I put pb on my pizza at home now. Monday specials for the summer is $5 glasses of wine and live music on the outdoor patio; dog and cat friendly. I've had most of these pizza's in the gluten free crust and I can say that it is very acceptable. The portales salad was fresh and crisp accompanied by oranges, prosciutto and sunflower seeds to give great tastes. Support your local pizza eateries, you may find a new favourite in them. read more

Stopped here for a quick lunch while visiting the passport office around 11am on a Thursday. The place was empty. The serving staff was pleasant enough but could hear them complaining about customers. Don't usually comment on attire but might want to think about a dress code (grungy tank top does not inspire confidence). That being said the food was very enjoyable. Hubbie had the ground beef & bacon burger (yes - ground bacon in a burger). He didn't care for the bun (ciabatta) which he felt caused the burger to be messier than necessary. I had the empanada lunch special - the house salad was enjoyable. Had ham and cheese (as suggested by waitress - ok but nothing to write home about) and the chicken (perfect amount of spice/flavour - highly recommend). Was excited to see they have a take out place on St. Mary's. We will likely visit this location before coming back to the restaurant. I would have recommend people give it a try. read more

This has got to be the absolute worst pizza place I've ever been to. I ordered the '7 Bancadas' pizza which looked delicious on the menu. It says it's spicy but there was nothing spicy about this pizza at all. I ordered it to go and was told it would take 15 mins but it was ready within 5 mins. Probably the most disgusting pizza I've ever tasted. Straight out of the freezer. It's too bad because this place seems to have a very nice ambiance and very nice staff. Very nice pizzeria with very traditional and tasty pizzas. Their crust is simply amazing, this place is supposed to offer original Argentinian pizza but I can atest that their pizzas taste as good as the best ones I've had in Italy. Why? these are traditional pizzas, not 'americanized' ones, they have a bit more cheese and less sauce so the taste is simply amazing! Service is a little on the slow side, but I'm sure they're still working on hiring more staff so I'll give them a pass for that. Their empanadas are very yummy too! I think the original ones, while more expensive than Simons, are much more full of flavour and traditionalism - again these aren't your regular 'americanized' empanadas. A nice ambiance and restaurant setup. The pizza dough is very authentic, but the cheese is still North American and thus the overall pizza doesn't taste like a true porteño pizza. The empanadas were not bad but some were quite bland. Nothing particularly bad about this place, but it seems to have (understandably) split the baby between authentic Argentine feel and what the local clientele will eat. read more

I do not give 5 stars lightly! If you are in the area, this is a must for lunch or dinner! My husband and I are from Chicago so we know good pizza! He is Italian and I am greek, and we come from a long line of great cooks. This place was amazing. The staff were happy to be there and the service and food where wonderful. Very cozy "homey" feeling. We were treated like family and had one of the best meals in Winnipeg! We were sad that we did not have time to visit again before we traveled back home. Wow! Went here last night with a group of friends. I was blown away. The menu has a lot of very interesting pizza options that you don't see every day! My boyfriend and I shared the bruschetta which was fantastic. I had the mushroom pizza. I have never tasted a pizza quite like this one. My boyfriend had the Chivito Canadienese which had shaved ribeye and a hard boiled egg and a bunch of other interesting things! And for dessert I had the leaves brûlée which was fantastic. My boyfriend had the dolce du leche crepe which I would highly recommend! I had their house merlot to drink which was actually the best red wine I have had (very smooth). The atmosphere is lovely! There is live music, and it is very warm and cozy. Our server was fantastic! Very efficient and funny. It was VERY warm in there, so I suggest dressing light when you go. I was wearing a thin sweater and I was feeling pretty sweaty by the end of the evening. Other than that and the diffcult parking, everything was absolutely fantastic! read more

I am so disappointed that I wasted a meal out on this restaurant. Although the crust on the pizza was good, the pizza was flavourless and the cheese was rubbery. The chef's choice appetizer ($15) probably cost $3 in terms of ingredients...bean and corn salad, a chunk of cheese, sliced tomatoes, a few slices of prosciutto ...come on corrientes...you can do better than that! There was no cooking skills demonstrated in that appetizer whatsoever! We tried an appetizer, salad, several empanadas, and two different pizzas...sampled a diverse selection of menu items and NONE measured up:( What a disappointment! Will not be back:( read more
