I'll save you my sad tale of woe, of driving to Herkimer Coffee in Phinney for the occasional genius latte, subjecting myself to the rabid ticket happy ire of the Seattle Parking Enforcement authorities, (gulp, how much was this latte combined with ticket combo worth?) only to find out that all along, I had a Herkimer right up the street in NE Seattle. Well, my only regret is fossil fuel waste, because this coffee is worth a drive around town for. Smooth, strong, perfect creama, nice ambiance and baristas that know their stuff. Nice, not cloyingly sweet mochas. Mighty Donuts and a small, well edited baked goods collection and free-wifi, along with a good but small little set up for working remotely. Downsides: no way to warm up the baked goods (sniff-sniff) and a european customer service vibe (none too obsequious.) Also, this location is smaller than the more roomy Phinney set up, and has minimal outlets, should you need to charge up. One of my two favorite spots for a near perfect latte in the NE of Seattle, and while I won't assert that I still won't garner a ticket from that determined swarm of blue and white Seattle meter maids, at least I am now leaving a smaller carbon footprint. read more

Herkimer has amazingly smooth Americanos! Better than Zoka, and a tad better than Cafe Vita according to my taste buds. I'm definitely going back here for the coffee. The pastries on the other hand, are kind of on the pricey side. I decided against it (see images for examples of prices). At 4pm the pastries (e.g., scones, donuts, etc.) all become $1 which may make them more appetizing. Modern look. Great place to study. Cash only. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to take a jaunt to Herkimer Coffee. It's located on the North End of the University District and is so clean and nice. It was our first visit, and we felt like we had just dropped into Cheers of the Java World. Everyone who walked in was greeted so warmly, and dogs and children were treated like royalty. The assortment of pastries looked soooo delectable - including some very unique selection of scones, such as ham and cheese. We opted for the Nutella Brioche, because Nutella is the nectar of the Gods. Oh man oh mighty, that was one groovy hunk of brioche. We were told that the best way to eat it is to cut it in half, because the Nutella was right in the middle. Oh my goolosh, that was some tasty vittles! We also ordered coffee - because it is a coffee shop. I got an iced mocha, while my boyfriend got a hot one. The mocha was so rich and balanced, Just the right amount of coffee flavor, and the beverage wasn't too sweet. I'll just say we were so satisfied with our little meal that we will definitely be back. I recommend this wonderful little shop to anyone who wants a change of pace from LowBucks or any of the other "McCoffee" places. read more

Herkimer makes one of the best cups of coffee in all of Seattle. They really know their stuff. My wife loves an extra-dry cappuccino and this is one of the few places that gets that right. The lattes I get are also just amazing. The only place that competes in my experience is Cafe Allegro further down the Ave. For the time being, I'm also buying my beans (which I grind at home) here and I love the Guatemala they've been selling. The only problems with this place is that as a place to hang out it's a bit sterile, the chairs and benches aren't the most comfy in the world and they only take cash. read more

It is a great quaint place to get some studying done and they have great natural lighting from the large windows. Limited seating but they do have a bathroom which is always a plus. Herkimer in the U District? I'm glad they have been adding locations around the area. What else is there to say other than it's Herkimer at a different location. It's a Herkimer with another location! I'm still a fan of their drip and honestly. I buy it by the two pound bags. It's cheap and it's a solid blend This location is actually more near Roosevelt but it's on the fringes of both here and the U District. The shop is fairly good size with seating both inside and outside (weather permitting.) A little street parking but I wouldn't count on it be available. The staff I've interacted with have been courteous and friendly. Still haven't tried their light food options though. I'll get around to it eventually. Latte is great if you're into ruining espresso with milk. I like my drip coffee obviously. read more

Stopped by here before my hair appointment at Tenpachi to take a conference call. Unfortunately the wifi was too weak so ended up using my phone to dial in. I didn't have coffee, but I grabbed a broccoli and cheese croissant. The thing was HUGE, and super tasty. It had the right amount of flakiness and the cheese wasn't overwhelming. It was the only savory pastry they had, and I wasn't in the mood for sweets. Service was super friendly and there were a lot of seats and bar stools for customers to sit at. My search for the perfect Coffee place in Seattle is over. :) Loved it. Great coffee - service and in a real cup with a design on top of the coffee. All my requirements. This is what I believe a coffee place should be with real Baristas and not people that only understand filling up a paper coffee cup. They will even keep your personal coffee cup if you bring it in for a daily coffee break. Seating is nice for having your drink and spending a few minutes relaxing - you don't have to fight the customers who sit there all day with a computer. This is my favorite neighborhood coffee shop. It is reliably good. I come here often either to have a drink and read/get work done, catch up with a friend, or to pick up a half growler of cold brew. The half growlers are amazing, convenient, a good price, and I have my coffee for 3-5 days. My partner and I have also had ice almond milk lattes, cortados, and drip coffee here, all good. Decent selection of baked goods (Mighty O donuts!). The baristas are awesome- chill, friendly, and efficient. Never had a bad customer service experience here. I have also observed them handling challenging customer situations with real grace and poise. I like that it is a quieter coffee shop but still lively. They play good music and there are always people coming in and out (especially on Saturdays with the Farmer's Market) but, as a general rule, people are respectful of the space and do their chatting or working quietly. They have a few outdoor chairs which is really nice for people watching or people who have dogs. read more

All the reviews I've read so far are on point with the experience I had when I went. Relaxed, comfortable vibes coming from the baristas with study feels from all the college kids mixed in with the locals catching up over some excellent coffee. Can I say that I'm not understating how good this coffee was, because that Americano I had had layers to its flavors. It had a full body and was smooth. I have to agree with another reviewer that this is one of the best cups of coffee I've had in awhile. I drink a lot of americanos and this one was memorable. I am definitely coming back to get a couple more shots of espresso and maybe a pastry or two. read more

Great coffee shops! Lots of two-seater tables that allow for more people to sit by themselves and leaves room for people to move tables together if you come with a larger group. There is also a table for 6 people that often have single people studying alone, along with bar-like seating that faces out toward the street. The staff is friendly and willing to chat with good and quick service. The coffee is good, but my only complaint is that they do not have decaf drip coffee for when it is later in the day but you still want something warm to drink. However, you can buy a decaf americano, but that doesn't allow for their 45 cent refills. read more

Environment: Simple and modern. For some reason, when I walk in, there's a cooling atmosphere. It may have something to do with the dimmed lighting and crisp interior design of the building. Go here. I've been looking for a quality cup of coffee near UW for a long time. This is it! The location is cozy, but big enough to set up shop and get some work done if you need to. The coffee is mercifully not over roasted or muddy. Bonus-you can actually taste the complexity of the beans and craftsmanship of the roaster. They also have some really tasty baked goods. I got a 12 oz americano and although I wouldn't say it was smooth, it was playfully flavorful without being too strong. I enjoyed it and would get it again. The price of the coffees is also cheaper than other places on the ave, americano being 2.50. I think the lattes were around 3.25. The non dairy substitute was also 50 cents, which is cheaper than other places. The place is on the smaller side, but it's great for conversations or even studying. The noise level never got too high. The interior reminds me of old Starbucks before all their renovation - gives a warm, cozy vibe. Personally would go back again and again! read more

If you're into malodorous furniture from the 70's with mysterious stains on it, fixtures in a general state of disrepair, scruffy baristas who can't be bothered to pull proper shots of espresso... But if you're the type of caffeine addict who likes stuff that's polished, appreciates clean lines, industrial design, and well groomed baristas who actually know their way around commercial grade espresso machines -AND- can do decent latte art... Then you will love this little place. Seattle is full of great little places to have coffee, but I can only think of a handful I wouldn't mind living in. And this little place is one of them. I've been here three times out of desperate need for caffeine before early morning haircuts next door, otherwise I'd never come here and won't again. Their coffee is fine and (I believe) priced to round up to even dollar amounts after tax which is cute or whatever. BUT DEAR GOD worst customer service of any cafe ever in the history of cafes. As I was getting my haircut at the salon next door (Tenpachi Modern Salon), my hairstylist offered to buy me an iced beverage since I was getting my hair colored (mind you this was mid-August, 90 degree+ heat, and there was no A/C in the salon). My hairstylist came back a few minutes later with an iced latte for me and told me it was from Herkimer. It was amazing. The nonfat latte was lightly sweetened with raw sugar, and you can taste the deep, bold espresso shots. I don't come here often enough. Herkimer can give any coffee shop in Seattle a run for its money. The espresso is delicious. Concentrated, intense, but not at all bitter. It has a syrupy texture and a beautiful reddish brown color. My only complaint is that the cups are sometimes not pre-warmed, resulting in a lukewarm shot. Every shot of espresso also comes with a little glass of carbonated water. It's a nice touch. The cappuccinos also deserve mention; the foam is thicker and lighter than a latte, but still flows freely and mixes well with the espresso. The drip coffee is also pretty reliable, though not as good as the espresso drinks. They do seem to cycle through different varieties, though, so it's probably worth giving it a try occasionally. My only complaint with this place is that it closes at 6pm. I have a recurring appointment nearby at 7pm, which means it's always closed when I walk past. Ah well, such is the lot of the late-evening caffeinator. This is also a great place to buy beans, freshly roasted to a nice medium at their Phinney Ridge location. A 12oz bag costs about $12, depending on what variety you get. The single origins are always distinctive, and the drip blend makes an outstanding everyday brew. read more

It never seems too crowded, so the free wi-fi is solid. I usually order a shot or a macchiato, but the mocha is also quite good and not too sweet. My friend delivered his quote to me the other day, "Taking a walk and thinking about stuff." At a birthday dinner party I find myself in need of coffee and found this place to be a walkable distance. So I decided to take a walk and think about stuff along the way. The place was cute and quiet. It's one of those places where I always ask myself how come I didn't know about it while attending UW. I saw several people hooked to their laptops studying or working inside. The coffee was pretty good. What I remembered most is the magic 8 ball on the counter where I asked a question and it told me "Yes." The answer caused me to laugh and the barista seeing my laugh, laughed along with me. When was the last time you went into a coffee shop, got some good coffee, and a magic 8 ball gave you an affirmative "yes" to whatever you asked? I'm not a coffee person, but my fiance, who is a barista and a coffee snob, assures me that this is the best coffee in Seattle. They do their own roasting, and sell beans for you to take home, which they can also grind there to your specifications. I'm a big fan of their teas, italian sodas, and hot chocolate. I thought it was a little weird at first that they don't have chai, but I've adjusted. Also, their baked goods are half price after 4pm, and they have Mighty-O doughnuts! What I really wanted to mention was how amazingly nice the people are. They always remember my fiance and me when we come in, and chat with us. One of the baristas noticed my ring when we first got engaged, and spent a minute exclaiming over it while we checked out. My most out-of-this-world customer service experience there was that I got a flat tire in front of the store, and came in a little stressed out while I was waiting to hear back from AAA. The barista asked if anyone in the store knew how to change a tire, and someone actually changed my tire and showed me how to do it so I can do it from now on. Ever since I took a tour of a Costa Rican coffee plantation, I've really appreciated my morning cup of the black crack even more - knowing how much love and labor goes into the process from plant to mug. However, the problem is the same toxic sludge that is Folgers or Yuban also comes from the Coffea arabica (or related) plant as, say, Herkimer's deliciousness. So, what's the difference and why pay more? Because Herkimer's coffee is bombtastic and they actually care what their coffee tastes like. They use shade-grown, fair-trade, pesticide-free beans and roast it to perfection themselves. Even if don't give a hoot where your coffee came from or whether the grower got a fair price, you can still appreciate the silky smoothness that is the Herk. read more

I hold coffee shops to a different standard than I do restaurants. And that standard is "not much of one." To impress me at a coffee shop, the coffee has to exist, and the service has to also exist. I'm okay if the price doesn't exist. So Herkimer's review should be taken with a grain of salt, because really most coffee shops I go to are going to get 4 to 5 stars unless they are Tully's level terrible. Thus far the only experiences I've had at that level have been at Tully's. Still, I had a good experience at Herkimer. We went in at near-closing time and the guy behind the counter wasn't rushing us out or annoyed we showed up so late. The place was clean. There were seats open. I asked the guy what a macchiato was since I was only aware of the one at Starbucks and that one is much bigger and more expensive. He said it was a shot of espresso with foam. Then we had a discussion about whether or not that was the best way to try a new bean flavor. I don't remember what the outcome of that discussion was. I ordered a mocha. It was very tasty. Creamy. After I was finished I opened the lid and the entire inside of the cup had a layer of foam. Neat. So all in all a good experience. Way to go. read more

Every Seattleite has a favorite coffee shop that is not Starbucks; this is mine. I spent a good portion of my summer here working on medical school applications or reading and immediately fell in love with the cafe. The ambiance, music selection, friendly baristas, and most importantly, superior espresso drinks kept me coming back. My drink of choice is either a mocha or nonfat vanilla latte. In the summer, the air conditioning is on a bit high so bring a jacket if you are planning on staying in the cafe for a while. Being an official regular U-District business lady, I need my coffee. It was right down the road from my massage place and needed another latte to wake me up besides my usual home-made latte. Unaware that they only take cash (or check), I ordered my coffee and whipped out my debit card. But the lady working was so nice, she said to just come back with the receipt and pay later. What was also nice is the way she poured the foam- right at the counter for me to see her create a tree- gotta love foam art! She then informed me that they go light on the syrup in the lattes and that I could ask for more if desired- which I did. So I found a nearby cash machine later on in the day, came back to pay plus got a muffin for a mid-day snack. Both the latte and muffin were delicious. And I am so happy that they have coffee beans to purchase AND the Espresso blend is a buck cheaper than most places! Very satisfied to have a cool coffee shop down the way from my work. The staff ALL know how to pull espresso properly and are friendly and knowledgable if you should chose to ask a 'dumb coffee question'. This Herkimer location gets a 3 for their coffee, but a 2 for their service. Perhaps I've just had bad luck, but I've always gone in when they're not busy, but I still have a long wait to get the barista's attention to just place my order (coffee seems to take a long time to come out, too). It hasn't always been the same person, either, so...I don't know. A bright side, their decaf is tasty, and it's at least a familiar enough request that they don't look taken aback when I order it! :) Coffee prices are about the same as elsewhere, and the semi-industrial-PNW-modern interior design is fine.
