I dropped in for a week at CF Heretic and was very impressed with Craig and his crew. The gym is clean and plenty of good quality equipment. Communication was immediate via email about my options and I felt welcomed by the members from the start. Facility looked nice, but the owner/lead instructor was rude. I came in to try out the box, filled out all the waivers and information sheets, and after meeting the owner, I asked if it would be possible to come up with a pricing/subscription structure that fits my frequent travel work schedule (I'm out of the country for two weeks every three weeks). After I asked this, the owner scoffed and said "Why would I do that?" in a sarcastic tone. I didn't know what to say. "...to make money?" was my feeble reply. He rolled his eyes and said "that's not how this works." I awkwardly took the pricing brochure and said I would be in touch and left before the "free" intro class started, still wearing my workout clothes. I'm not upset that they were unwilling to negotiate a special schedule/subscription for me, I didn't really expect they would (just hoped) but I am upset by the haughty, dismissive attitude of the owner. If he treats prospective members with this level of contempt, I am thankful I avoided signing up here. read more

Marie has been exactly the coach I needed to get from couch to class! She is respectful of my aging joints and patient with the adjustments I have to make on many occasions. It is always a good feeling to see her and to feel so supported as I get back into shape after a longtime injury. I've lost 11 lbs since working with her for a few months, something I would have thought impossible given aging and how hard it is to lose weight. I feel younger. Exercise is so critical for brain, heart and immune system health, we need to get serious. I highly recommend Marie! read more

As a former member of CrossFit Montgomery County and then CrossFit DTR, I can honestly say that the this gym as gone downhill drastically. When I went to CFMC, it was my first time ever being a part of the CrossFit community. Shortly after joining, the owners had a major falling out and CFMC was no longer. I worked out at CrossFit Enforce while I waited on the owners of CFMC to open their new gym because we were loyal to our original coaches. 6 or 7 months after this, CrossFit DTR opened but it lacked passion and energy. The coaching there was minimal, except by one of the lead coaches who no longer works there. The owners seemed distracted from what they were there for: coaching. The only thing that seemed to matter to them is money, even if it meant not paying the other coaches that were there working harder than they were. Specifically, I remember one time sitting in my car watching the workout in progress. The owner was staring off into space and not paying attention to the only athlete in the building. I didn't see him once send words of encouragement or even look at her. She was the ONLY athlete in there-- all eyes should have been on HER. I didn't want to go into the gym when I saw that happen, and waiting until more members showed up. After lack of ability to help work with my schedule by offering more classes in the morning, I parted ways with CrossFit DTR. I went back to CrossFit Enforce which is about a 1.5 miles from CrossFit DTR and where I worked out at while the owners were trying to get their new gym opened. It may be smaller, but my current coach is very attentive and since being back at a gym with positive energy and great coaching, I have hit numerous PRs and excelled in areas where I could not seem to improve on at DTR. CrossFit DTR may be shiney and pretty, but is lacking major coaching which is vital to the success of athletes at the gym. I also believe that CrossFit DTR is overpriced in comparison to other gyms in the area so if you are interested in checking out CrossFit DTR you should do some research and make sure to visit other gyms as well to get a fair comparison of facility, coaching, members, and pricing. **Update** Would like to point out that a member below mentioned Coach Matt and Grant being awesome- they both no longer work there. read more

Supportive coaches, group friendly, family oriented and coaches can be funny as heck too! What can I say? Where do I begin? We became close to the owners, coaches and the DTR team. The DTR team is us crazy people who basically come to workout almost all the time because we love to see each other hit a new PR aka personal record or just see each other get stronger and faster everyday. We aim to cheer everyone on because it's such a great feeling to see one of your friends achieve something extremely hard that they have NEVER DONE BEFORE. It's such a wonderful accomplishment to see someone achieve. They finally have a CrossFit Kids program lead by a certified CrossFit Kids coach (who also by the way works in her full time job in a school with children with Asperger's). Just imagine the love and the patience this coach brings to class. She is so full of energy! We love watching her coach our kids. She is amazing. This kids class is a wonderful opportunity for parents because you can do a workout and your kid can also do a workout at the same time slot. No worrying for a babysitter and you get your workout done. My 2 youngest kids are in this program. They are 4 and 7 years old. My eldest is in high school and was allowed to join us in the adults class (this was by invitation only and it depended a lot on her maturity and how she can handle adult type of coaching). My husband and myself obviously are in this fitness program. We LOVE IT! Love it! LOVE IT! This place is a huge part of us. DTR is like our second home, we come we work out, we stay and cheer the next class on while we stretch out and roll... it feels like it's our home away from home (Chicago). We have made so many new friends in the DTR community that have stuck with us like family. We all ride or die together here. No one is left behind and no one is alone. This gym is the perfect combination of work and play. The coaching is unparallelled and very supportive. I have achieved things in the last 6 months that I honestly never thought I could do. Don't get me wrong- you're pushing yourself to the limit every day. There are days that I can barely walk and can't lift my arms past my shoulders, but each time I work that hard, I'm so much stronger 2 weeks later that it's 100% worth it. I wouldn't make it back after those days if I didn't see results, but also because of the CrossFit community spirit. Everyone here urges each other on and there is as much clapping and cheering as there is grunting and sweating. Try getting emotional support at a regular gym while cranking away on the treadmill! Tai and the rest of the staff make sure that you're perfecting your technique to prevent injuries while 20 minutes later they're busting on you for your crazy attempt to do the difficult moves. They scale everything in the beginning so no matter what your fitness level is, you can participate with the group. No need to be intimidated here. You truly laugh, cry, sweat, bleed, and love coming here. read more

I have been struggling with staying consistent with my strength training and have been considering Crossfit for some time. Was scared away by all the negative things written about CF, but in July decided to give it a try. At first, I really struggled as I have always been athletic, played multiple sports, ran, swam, biked, etc. well first week was an absolute beat down on both body and more importantly, mind. I really struggled mentally as there I am, this tall strong guy and I can't perform the movements with a weight that I see the ladies using. Really humbling and it took too many months to get past this and check my ego at the door but I'm there, is it still annoying? A little but I see improvements everyday. And throughout those months, the coaches and athletes at Heretic worked with me and supported me, especially Craig. I can honestly say that if Craig wasn't there, I would have walked away. Craig is death on improper form, as are the other coaches and that is key to finding the right CF box (or any other coached activity), if the coaches aren't preaching form, actively correcting you, providing visual feedback and just stopping you when you are doing it wrong, then time to try a different coach/facility. Everyone at Heretic is amazing and I've never felt better about myself physically (sure, I still hate burpees, but who doesn't????). Thanks to everyone here, I have finally realized it's a journey NOT a destination. To answer some of the negativity that is posted about CF (these are MY thoughts and opinions based on 40+ years of sports/exercise/fitness experience) 1) Can you get hurt? Yes, if you don't pay attention to your body, try to use more weight than you should, use improper form or push yourself too hard, yes, you can get hurt, just like any other activity. 2) Is it a cult? Well......YES. But cults can also be a positive. Everyone there is working together to build a better machine...US. 3) Kipping (I still am working on this) - it's a way of doing work over time but yet we still do strict pullups. 4) Repetitive motions - as with all things, fitness has to be a partnership between athlete and coach. So it is also on the athlete to understand what their limits are and to intelligently push past them. If you've never done more than 20 wall balls, doing 150 wall balls for time might not be the best idea. 5) Narcissism - this one is tough as it's usually in the eyes of the beholder, but I can say that I LOVE what I'm able to do now, I LOVE how I feel and I want others to experience it. I don't preach, I just talk about my experiences occasionally (except to my GF, who is probably sick of it by now). It's like any other positive experience, it should be shared but also you need to be aware of going too far. read more

I was a member of CFMC which used to be owned by the same coaches that now run DTR, and Tai, the head coach is definitely one of the better CF coaches I have ever been around. I could do a particular exercise and think I absolutely nailed it, but he would be able to point out several things that I could still improve on. Further more, the community in DTR is awesome. Although I am no longer a member, I still drop in from time to time whether its for a memorial day workout or a thanksgiving workout and I am always greeted with friendly faces. read more

Tai and Danielle are so supportive and helpful, no matter what level you are at. The WODs can be scaled to any fitness level, and they're a lot of fun! This place does have a great atmosphere, and anyone may walk in to hearing cheering for someone about to do their first muscle up- it's great! I found Crossfit through a "New You Challenge" last April. This was the year I was turning 50 and I desperately needed a change in my health, mentally and physically. I walked into "the box" and thought to myself, am I crazy? Yes, crazy enough to attend every single class three times a week for the next six weeks and now currently a Heretic member since September. I have never felt so alive and when I get a chance to talk about my fitness journey, I will! I like that every class is a challenge and since I've been a member I've not had the same workout. What pulled me in was the training instruction and making sure I don't hurt myself. The coaching is beyond what I have received in the past. Some days I go in and think to myself I cannot do this. However, time flies when your working out and my fitness family is there to encourage me along the way. We have fun and I'm so glad to have made this decision for myself! read more

I have been an ACTIVE MEMBER since Feb. 2014 and absolutely love this gym. We have some of the best coaches around who each have a different style and bring a lot of knowledge that they share with us to help us grow as athletes both physically and mentally. At Crossfit DTR we have a strong community that you don't see in many other gyms. One of the reasons that I call this place home is we have members who actually care and are supportive of each other.
