So much to love! LIght airy feel. The tables look comfortable, but if you have a smaller group I would recommend the table overlooking the kitchen. The bar (and kitchen) staff were super helpful in picking out beverages and food. The food cocktail menu is well organized by flavor trait- such as bitter, mineral. Each category had a full, low and no alcohol. I ordered the full alcohol bitter. Reminiscent of a Negroni but still unique and quite tasty. Our server recommended ordering family style- sharing dishes. REally glad we did. We ordered ordered a few shared plates, pasta, an entree and a vegetable . Every dish was outstanding- it's hard to pick a favorite. Dessert was well worth it- the chocolate was fantastic as well. Loved everything about the meal. I will be back. read more

We were at a food tasting experience, so not a normal meal. I started with the special Old Fashioned using Mezcal. Some tasted it and did not care for it but I liked it. $13 5 part meal with wine pairing. My wife and I shared the pairing. But 3 oz pour for each small plate and nice wines. All liked the Lambrusco and the port servings. My favorite plates were the salad and the chocolate bórdenos with Italian margarine. I have been here twice now and had very different experiences both times. The first time everything was wonderful food was great and service was on point. The second time it was a big miss. I felt on the second and most recent visit the server was a bit standoffish. Also the food we had was not hot. I did notice that it looked like they don't have enough heat lamps and the food did not come out at the same time. I will say that the drinks we had were great and the U shaped bar is appealing. We had the great opportunity to meet Grant's father today. He came in to support Grant when the original staff was not able to show up. It was great to meet Grant's father Tim and be able to tell him how much we Love Grant. I asked for a egg scramble with some ham and cheese, Grant countered with a red eye gravy, which was great. Ham and thin sauce often seen in the cuisine of the Southern United States and associated with the country ham of that region. I would do that again, no question. Very good flavor. read more

Came here for a work dinner before heading to a play nearby together. The farm to table concept is really great, the ambiance was light and open, a little upscale but not too fancy. The server was nice and I really appreciated the ways they could make things vegetarian and GF by putting things on the side. My fav part of the meal was my drink, get these Low ABV under sustainable! It was tasty & on the sweeter side & I really enjoyed it so it's a must-get. My must-get food recommendations would be the snap peas which tasted bright w/ lots of flavor & the grilled focaccia. The risotto was pretty good too & I'm stealing the idea of putting pomegranate seeds in there as I liked that contrast. I didn't care as much for the sea bass w/ fennel and thought the other things were not bad but not wow (ricotta toast, salad, pork rillette, fried chicken, carrots, or potatoes). If I was dining w/ more meat eaters, I would've liked the try the ravioli but I'm glad I came here and got to try so much of the menu. An all around absolute delight!! I am amazed at how under-reviewed this place is- I cannot recommend it highly enough!! Herbst uses a rotating seasonal, farm-to-table approach- and everything was so fresh and unique. We decided to do it Tapas style so we could try lots of things- which was the move!! The Fried Chicken we had was unanimously deemed the best chicken any of us have had... maybe ever. It had a pickle brine and topping... I can't stop thinking about it. I surprised my wife to dinner at Herbst to celebrate her retirement. The room was spacious and beautiful. We started off with a bottle of Gruner Veltliner and it was crisp, clean and delicious. We ordered the Buratta with peas as a starter and followed our server's, Ella, suggestion and ordered some bread to accompany it. So glad we did. The dish was wonderful and the bread helped soak up all the sauces and goodness left behind. Delicious bread on its own as well. We also had the Roasted Asparagus with a sauce like a bernaise accompanying it. Very tasty. My wife had the Halibut and was thrilled with the taste and how well it had been prepared. I had the Herbst Fried Chicken which was flavorful and so crispy. It was topped with herbs, pistachios and more. It came with a few delicious house pickles as well. First time at Herbst- I was beyond impressed! Very cute and cozy atmosphere inside. I ordered the Granato Risotto and it waz SO amazing from the smart choice of grain that kept texture in a risotto style cooking to the scored trumpet mushrooms, every part was delicious. We got the potatoes and foccacia on the side, both very good. The potatoes were topped with a rye crumble, creme fraiche and a potato relish which was all unbelievably tasty. We finished with one of the best espresso martinis I have ever had and a delicious olive oil cake. We will ABSOLUTELY be back. Incredible cooking and great service! read more

If I were to discover a secret restaurant on an unassuming street with Michelin-star creations of bliss in a state that doesn't even offer the Michelin guide, I found it here. We two couples had the most delightful server but I regret forgetting her name because she deserves all recognition. She made successful recommendations every single time, including guiding us in choosing our foo-foo drinks. And bravo to the mixologist. (Fun fact: cocktails are offered in full proof, half proof, or no proof in terms of alcohol content. Mocktails were excellent according to my niece.) We decided to get several plates and share, which included the ricotta toast, duck dumplings, and entree duck. Far and away my favorite was the ricotta toast; let's just make this my entree. The caviar on top was wonderfully complementary to its other flavors. The duck dumplings were nicely crisp and good but didn't wow me. The other duck (entree) was excellent, although one person at the table didn't care for the rather rare consistency under the layer of fat that is characteristic of how it's usually prepared. Calories be damned, we ordered two amazing desserts: the manjari pot de créme with pomegranate and white chocolate. Lovely! Probably the best I've had. On to the date cake with streusel and diced, brandy apples and a dollop of some kind of sublime sour cream concoction. The latter was our group's fave. If it doesn't sound good to you, I'll prove you wrong here. I don't normally even like date/spice cake. Btw, the facade of the restaurant is hipster, artsy, and cool (we didn't notice the neon love note above the front door until it had gotten dark outside). It's a really cool vibe in this place. We sat at the bar, and instead of being at the side (in a corner) it felt like we were in the premier spot. The staff was really nice and helpful. The prawns was the best thing we had. Not tough or overcooked, and the sauce will have you loicking the plate afterwards. The drink menu was really interesting. It's not traditional cocktails, but instead flavor profiles that you pick from and select the proof (how much alcohol is present). It's a really interesting way to view the menu. This is a review for their winter menu 2023. While wildly popular right now my friend and I were not a huge fan of the food. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant are a fun find for the area. Elevated, dark and cozy. It feels fancy with the exposed kitchen and packed even on a Sunday night. It is such a cute date night space! Service was nice and paced well. It is a bit spendy as they recommend 3-5 plates for 2 people with plate being upwards of $20. 3/5 cuttlefish small plate - The cuttlefish was perfectly fried. Light and crispy. The sauce had just enough acidity and texture to excite the dish. It was on the saltier side with the gardenia which was not spicy and the capers. I felt the flavors did not pair super well. 2/5 Bucatini, carrot sour cream, gruyère, poppy seed, pumpkin seed oil - The pasta was quite aldente and you really had to chew. This dish was not great. Bland and heavy with the way the sauce sat. Edible but would not order again. 3.5/5 lumache bolognese - again the pasta was very aldente. I liked that his dish came out hot temperature wise. The flavors in this were much better. There was a kick of spice and you could taste some complexity with the beef and pork flavor. I literally just made this dish in my Hello Fresh except with cavatappi noodles and it was better. I hope to return when their menu changes to have a better review. Not worth your money currently with our bill for these 3 dishes coming out to $100 and leaving still feeling hungry. read more

Herbst has an incredible ambiance & is gorgeous on the inside. Parking in the back, I've seen what looks to be a really cute patio space, which I can't wait to check out. Having a little farm stand is such a cool idea, I got a fantastic smelling candle as well! We tried a few of the cocktails & I love the fact that you can order them full proof, low proof, or no proof (full to no alcohol). I tried the Mineral first, then the Seasonal (an apple cider-tasting cocktail this time), then the Coffee Martini as dessert. The space is super cute! Small and intimate, and despite the tables being rather close to each other, the noise level in the restaurant drowned out the conversation of other patrons. The ricotta toast was better than I expected. The bread was soft and warm, and the flavors of the chilies and apricots blended nicely together. I definitely wanted more and would order it again. The spinach salad was good. The corned lamb reminded me of prosciutto, but better, and the rye crisps provided nice texture. I would have preferred a tad more dressing, but that's a matter of personal preference. I would also order it again. Lumache was fine. The pasta was a bit underdone. The pesto flavor was different than what I'm used to or expected. I wanted a bit more lamb sausage. I would pass on this to try other things on the menu. Lamb leg steak --- order it, it's good! Well seasoned, well prepared. Can't wait to have it again. The waitress was great. The drinks were delicious. Glad to support a woman-owned business. And I love a non-tipping establishment. So Underrated -- My Favorite Restaurant in the Twin Cities My wife and I stumbled upon Herbst after a day at the Como Zoo, just looking for somewhere nearby to eat. From the outside, it seemed pretty unassuming...you could almost miss it. But by the end of our meal, we were blown away. We ended up ordering over half the menu (it's a small menu), and every single dish was exceptional. Beautifully prepared, creative, and full of flavor. Yes, it's on the pricier side, but was worth every penny. We loved it so much that we went back to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary, and somehow, the second experience was even better. It felt special from start to finish. It was the kind of meal and atmosphere you remember for years. We're already looking forward to returning once the next seasonal menu is released. We've dined at many high-end restaurants, including several with Michelin Stars, and honestly, Herbst is our favorite of them all. The attention to detail, the balance of flavors, and the overall experience are top tier. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant too. It's very laid back and chill - so many other restaurants at this level try too hard to be fancy and come off as pretentious. We went here for our anniversary dinner. The space is nice, we were seated promptly for our 6:30 reservation. Hostess and server were professional and friendly. The cocktail menu is difficult to understand so I just ordered a Old Fashioned - my wife also could not discern the cocktail situation and had a beer. We started with ricotta toast and the beet salad - both were excellent. I had the creste di gallo which was good, but I always think I will like a pasta dish more than I ever do. Wife had the pork loin, which was very good, and it had these pickled tomatoes that were so incredibly delicious. Creme brulee and decaf coffee for desert - the brulee was very good, the coffee was a a bit weak. We were excited for this place. It's 5 min from our house. First, the ambiance inside and on the patio is great. The food was good. The lumache was great. Everything is extremely fresh and lively. The service was good. However, we had two down sides: 1) the price was a bit too high. $100 for two people without any drinks factored in was a bit more than I think it's worth. 2) our food took an extremely long time to come out. We got our main course 90 minutes after arrival. We had a concert to go to after so we asked what the delay was. The staff was amazing and apologized and said the ticket got lost but they just put it in again. They gave us our drinks free. And they gave us some cookies to go. So A+ to them for making them better. Ultimately, I think it has high potential but they are still dialing it in a little. read more

We came here for the Valentines dinner yesterday and both my SO and I are quite underwhelmed and disappointed. The ambience and environment were very good, but when it comes to the food, which is the main event, it is best described as pretentious. It's like Herbst is trying to imitate Michelin Star restaurants without understanding why those restaurants are renowned. Let's start with the first course, it was essentially anchovies on some bitter greens with not great tasting cauliflower "panna cotta." The greens with anchovies were okay, but that is the only way to describe it, "okay." The cauliflower part of the dish was bad. The guests to the right of us were also overheard talking about how it isn't good. This is because of this weird blend of flavors which just didn't work together at all. The next dish was the best I would say, and that is because it literally was just a trout crudo with daikon radish if I recall. It's not hard to mess up and I did enjoy this. Next there was the biggest disappointment of the meal with the rutabaga mezzelune with essentially two tiny bricks of lamb. The lamb was presse lamb, which I will say was tender with it being braised and all that, but like there was like no food. This with only three of the mezzelune was kinda insane. Don't get me wrong, I understand that culinary arts is exactly that, art, but like when I go to an actual Michelin star restaurant and get smaller plates, there is at least a reason for them(very high end ingredients yadda yadda) and they will taste amazing. This just couldn't back it up with the taste. It was just mid and boring. The last course of an olive oil cake with mascarpone and espresso on the side was good, but again it was pretentious. Like this is basically a tiramisu with olive oil cake instead of lady fingers and with that whole "deconstructed" thing. After all four courses, we were still hungry and went to Taco Bell just to get something more in our stomachs. The worst part about all of this is that this mid, pretentious, tiny meal was $95 a person with the total cost(before drinks) being $259.70. This is absolutely insane and I really think Herbst needs to stop being something they are not, and understand that nothing they will make at the time being is going to be worth this much. Anyways for a TLDR, this place is kinda cringe. read more

First- I loved the ambiance at Herbst!! It was lively and had a cozy slightly eclectic feel- so fun! The cocktail and wine list was great for me- I liked how they had different options for each cocktail (full proof, low proof and zero proof/mocktail). Now on to food- I tried the roasted marble potatoes with seaweed butter. I wanted to love it because I love seaweed and trout roe- but I feel like it was slightly bland. Now the pasta dishes on the other hand, I LOVED! The Lumache pesto with lamb sausage was really tasty- a unique pesto but really yummy. My favorite dish was the Ricotta Gnocchi! Shallots, almond and... yogurt!? Idk it didn't taste like yogurt it was just rich and decadent! So good! Next time I'm in MN I'm excited to go back and try more of the main/meat/fish dishes because they looked really good, too. We sat out in the little courtyard on a perfect summer evening. Food, service and ambiance were all outstanding. Creative cocktails too.

We visited Herbst on a Saturday evening for a dinner to catch up with friends. The restaurant is in an unexpected location on Raymond in St Paul, but there is plenty of parking and it's easy to walk to. Walking in, the space is warm and inviting with plenty of space to wait for a table and a coat rack readily available. There is a small farm stand area that sells local food and goods that can also transform into a private dining space. The space was closed when we visited for a private event, but it would be really cool to check out! We were seated quickly and the dining area is so cute. It has an open kitchen with a beautiful bar as the center of the space with a gorgeous chandelier. The chairs are mismatched farm-style chairs and it was very cozy and inviting. The cocktails are separated by flavor profile and proof which I appreciated since we had driven. I ordered the low proof mineral cocktail which resembled a sweeter martini and really enjoyed it! My husband ordered a glass of the Bordeaux and it was a really great glass of wine. We had four people in our party and ordered two small plates to share and four entrees to share. We started with the roasted mushrooms and the ricotta toast. The mushrooms were just ok - earthy and really enhanced by combining the ham and the mushroom in one bite. We wishes they were cooked a little more but they were good overall. The ricotta toast was satisfying and a great appetizer to split. I would recommend. We all split the entrees so we could taste more items on the menu and the staff were very accommodating - they provided us with individual smaller plates and silverware to serve the food. The clear winner was the sea bass. It was perfectly cooked and the herby green sauce was outstanding. The skin was super crispy and when we combined the fish, vegetables, and sauce into one bite, it was one of the best dishes I've had in the metro in a while. The bucatini pasta was very good, but the sauce soaked into the noodles so it was a little dry. The lamb bacon spaghetti was also a crowd favorite. The depth of flavor in the sauce was really good and the pasta was perfectly cooked. And finally, the pheasant was maybe a little dry, but the skin and the sauce made it a really craveable dish. There wasn't a single speck of meat left on the bones after we were through. Overall, Herbst is a great addition to the Twin Cities and I highly recommend. I will absolutely be back! read more
