Extraordinary and Perfect! Ordered a cake for a large baby shower and the cake and decorations were perfect! My theme was "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". They asked if they could keep one of paper plates to capture the theme. At the party, I received many compliments on the cake, which typically does not happen. Everyone asked me where I purchased the spectacular cake. The cake was 2 layers of marble cake and the entire frosting was whipped cream. The cake was delicious and beautiful. This was my first time doing business here. I have only lived in Elgin, IL for 11 months. I moved here from Chicago and did not have high expectations. If you want a cake that looks like a toddler decorated it, and rude customer service when you try to inform them of your dissatisfaction with your order, then this is the bakery for you! I ordered a cake for my baby shower from here and was initially told they couldn't do the cake I wanted with fondant because they need two weeks notice for anything with fondant. They said they could do something very similar to the pictures I showed them so I went with it. The day of pick up someone else had to get it for me as I was caring for a family member in the hospital, and when I got home and saw the cake I almost cried. The cake that we emailed about and I had given them pictures of was NOT what we got. Instead, I had a cake with less than half the decorations that I requested and paid for, a crappy screenshot image that jewel would have done better, uneven frosting, and chunks missing out of the poorly decorated frosting of the cake. They were closed for the remainder of the weekend and I had the shower the next day, so I had to take it somewhere else to be fixed. When I called to let them know how disappointed I was in the product I received,, the woman was rude to me because I accidentally gave her the wrong order date and she said she couldn't believe someone else would fix their cake. She then said she'd talk to her baker and decorater and call me back. It's been over a month and I never heard back from them. I had a neighbor who also ordered around the same time and said they had a terrible experience as well, and that it looked like a toddler did their cupcakes as well. The yellow cake is soooo good. and i don't really know why. it is very moist, it's frosting is sugary, the filling is creamy...but the cake itself has this taste like no other golden cake i've had. i stole two pieces from the party to take home! read more

So I tried Herb's yesterday because I was telling my husband that I wanted to try out some new bakeries so I can have that one "go to" bakery that I know I can get a wide variety of DELICIOUS items. And Herb's is not that bakery for me. I got a cupcake, so I could test the moistness, a Dumpling Cake which is like bread pudding and a few butter cookies. The cupcake was decent, but even Jewel is better, the Dumpling Cake had a funny taste that was not too appetizing and the cookies were decent but they only had one variety of butter cookies and the only options were the sprinkle colors and they were $12.00 a pound! The one good thing about the place was the girl who helped me out, she was very friendly. But, because of the lack of delicious items I will probably not be going back...so the hunt for a great bakery continues. read more

I have to admit that I personally don't have that big of a sweet tooth and don't like donuts or cake, but my family loooooves this place. apparently the donuts are great and the coffee cake is to die for. I have had their challah bread before, and I'm not an expert or anything, but considering the other times I've had it my roommate's Jewish aunt cooked it, I'd say the challah at Herb's is pretty damn good. the cakes they have there look incredible. Herb's is like an institution in Elgin; like other people are saying it's a great local business that is worth our support. plus I think the prices aren't bad at all -- I recently bought 3 donuts and 2 streudel things for $3.99. much cheaper and fresher than dunkin or jewel! read more

I love this place. I particularly love that they are only about a block away from home so I can walk over, which I do often. I occasionally sneak over to get a donut - the chocolate custard cream, sometimes known as Boston cream at other shops - before work. So yummy. On Saturdays my family and I will sometimes walk over to pick up a random assortment of goodies for breakfast. My daughter rarely lets us leave without a box of the thumbprint cookies. I even ordered her birthday cake from here a few months back, it turned out exactly how she wanted it and it was very tasty. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Just be sure to note, if you're looking for a sweets fix on Sunday morning they are closed so stock up on Saturday! read more

I'm only choosing "1"star because there is no option for "0". Herb's may get high reviews for its product, but their customer service is absolutely atrocious. I am with a local business--close to their shop-- and have recently been placing small orders--1x per month--for one or two boxes of cookies to bring to clients (as a thank you). This week, I called on a Monday morning 2/9/15 to see if they might have a couple dozen Valentine-themed cookies (specifically hearts) to have packaged nicely (I was specific on the box and packaging because we have ordered before) that I could pick up and bring to two of my clients. The woman I spoke with whose name begins with a "D" and rhymes with Yvonne appears to be some type of manager. She was quite abrupt in her tone, informed me that they need 3 or 4 days to special order cookies. I said, "It's only 2-dozen cookies." She said that was their policy. I asked what varieties they might have and she said they would have 1 heart cookie and they could make it in 3 different colors. Fine....I placed the order for Thursday 2/12/15. Mind you, she sounded "put off" the entire time, tho' I identified the local company I was with and that we have ordered from them before to bring to clients. Next day, I called back and spoke to another employee and asked if there was any way we could pick up the cookies on Weds. because I really needed to take the cookies to my clients. The young lady I spoke to got approval. Cool. When I picked up my order on Weds., here is what happened. Walked in the door (which rings when you enter). No one there. Waited 5 minutes literally. Finally see someone in the back room and said, "Hello?" Young lady comes out. I told her I was there to pick up an order. While I was waiting the 5 mins., I noticed the display cases were FULL of Valentine cookies with about 4 different heart varieties (they had told me they would only have 1) and several other types with a Valentine theme. She brings my order out: Not the boxes I wanted. No "Herbs" sticker, no fancy cord. I told her that I had pre-ordered 2 days prior, had spoken to the woman with the "D" name and specifically asked for a certain box for a nice presentation to clients. She goes in the back room for several minutes. The "D" lady comes out. Looks crabby and put off. Hurriedly walks over to a stack of boxes and retrieves some type of box....I say, "Is this a problem?" because she looks put off. She shows me a different box she can package it in. Not the one I asked for, but would do. No apology (now we are going on 15 minutes of waiting). They take at least 10 minutes to repackage the cookies. Finally come out with the boxes. "Herb's" sticker is upside down....cookies are not laid nicely in box. No apology. Do not expect customer service when you enter or call. I can promise you, I will NOT ever do business there again, nor will I recommend them to anyone. As a 13-yr. Elgin resident, I know a lot of people. I assure you, I will make certain to let people know that they are UNhelpful, UNfriendly and unappreciative. read more

That being said I called today to place my order only to be told 3 days is not sufficient time to place an order ,and that they were Sorry but could not place my order ,when I spoke to the manager , the cookie maker herself said she could not help me and had no time to deal with nonsense and hung up on me...Worst Customer Service Ever!! After reading through on several sites, it would behoove the owners of Herbs to take come cake decorating classes and a class on Customer Service. They have decent baking skills for average bakery items. But customers want a bakery with talented decorators. So disappointed today. We've been going to Herbs for our special cakes for 10(?) Years. And more often for donuts. I had a request for a simple decoration on top, a 3 and 0 made with small flowers. No lettering, but the shape of the 30 needed to be clear or the whole theme would be lost. Upon pick up the 3 looked like backwards C. The assistant took it back for fixing. Didn't really change. Back again, still wrong. I apologized every time as if i had done something wrong. The 3rd time I asked if I could talk briefly with the decorator. She came out and was very unfriendly with a bad attitude. If it was just a spray of flowers I never would have complained. And even then i was so apologetic. This is for my mentally challenged son who turns 30. He never would have understood the purpose of the backwards C and 0. She impatiently said she could scrape everything off and redo but it would take an hour. I think the comment was to scare me off of asking for a fix. Without telling me what she planned she took it to the back for a 4th time. The communication was so poor. Maybe I should have just asked for a few random flowers be added so it didn't look like any numbers and bought a 3 and 0 candle. She brought it back and it was better but still not the theme. It is such a simple shape its as if she was being stubborn about making it right. Maybe a brush up on customer service is needed. The attendant was super sweet and sympathetic. read more

Our wedding venue has Herbs do their wedding cakes, so we really had to have faith that Herbs was going to be great. We gave them a picture of how we wanted the cake to look, and they were able to duplicate it exactly.! We went with chocolate with chocolate cream in the middle, hey it's our wedding, we do what we want! It tasted amazing! I have been to 15 weddings in the past 4 years and this was the best wedding cake I have tasted. People at the wedding were also saying how awesome it was! So if your wedding venue has a contract with Herbs you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for a bakery to make your cake, I do not hesitate to recommend this place! read more

Herb's is a great family run Bakery in Elgin. I would highly recommend the pretzel rolls, they are wonderful, and great to share. Their thumbprints are also very good for a treat to share. I have been going to Herbs bakery since 1999. I always order 3 to 4 cakes a year. This past Thanksgiving I ordered a chocolate whip cream cake. They have always been great, but this year the cake was horrible!!! The cake part was not moist and fresh. I picked it up on Wednesday and served it on Thanksgiving. The cake portion was already going stale and by Friday the cake was inedible!!! But what was surprising the whip cream was still fresh which led me to believe the cake was probably made on Monday. I told them to have the cake ready for 4:30 p.m. so they had all morning and day to make it fresh!! Also, we ordered several individual strussel Danish--they were fresh but totally different then usual. I did not order cake for Christmas eve because I did not want to spend over $20.00 for a 7 inch round cake and have it not be fresh! I did get some hard rolls, but they did not have any strussel Danish coffee cake which they usually have several. I was told the baker did not make any for xmas. I don't think I will be ordering any cakes from them. There had to be a change in the baker or they are under new management because things are not the same!!! read more

The cakes, doughnuts, cookies and coffee from Herb's are top notch. The staff at Herb's are quick, friendly, and knowledgable. I went in looking for a dessert treat for an evening with friends. A very friendly staff member with dark hair, I don't recall her name, recommended the chocolate torte. The torte was a huge hit with our guests. My thanks to the great staff at Herb's. Very disappointed in the decorating job they did for a 65th Wedding Anniversary cake. I ordered the cake, and paid for it (more than $100) over the phone and told them the border and writing needed to be sapphire blue, which is the color for a 65th anniversary. That was ALL they did to decorate the cake. No flowers, nothing on the side, just the border and the writing. When I told them I was disappointed they said, that's how the order was written up. Never did the girl who took the order say that I had to specify that I wanted the cake decorated. read more

My husband and I got our wedding cake through Herb's Bakery because they were recommended to us by our reception vendor. After reading reviews, I called and discussed pricing and different cake options. We decided to go with a four layered cake (half of which was fake) and then another sheet cake. I've never heard of this concept before but they made only only of the four layers real and the rest was fake, however, the presentation looked fantastic!! I sent them a picture of what I was looking for online and they replicated it perfectly. Not to mention they delivered our cake to the venue - I never had to go there once! They also have different sheet cake filing options (we ordered the cannoli) and it was fantastic. Very pleased with this bakery and I will be using them from now on!! read more

I was still new to Elgin when I first found out about this bakery and stopped in to see how it was. I went on a Saturday morning to get a coffee cake. When I walked in it looked nice, clean, and well stocked with a nice assortment of baked goods. I'm afraid this is where the praise ends. The staff did not seem very friendly. There was one woman and one man. No greeting as I came in and I was looking at the coffee cakes for a couple minutes before the guy asked what I wanted. I ordered a pecan coffee cake and had debated over whether I even wanted to do that considering their regular price on one is $11! For one! Saturdays the coffee cakes are $9. Wow what a savings (heavy on the sarcasm). Now I grew up in the south suburbs where there was an excellent selection of bakeries and I think the most I have ever paid for a coffe cake is $7. You would think this $9 coffee cake would be phenomenal if it cost that much, but I'm sad to say I would have been better off just going to Jewel (not to knock their bakery dept I think its actually pretty decent). To be fair I am going to give this bakery one more try to see if another star or two should be added, but it doesn't seem promising. read more

I visited Herb's Bakery for the first time today to see what kind of artisinal breads they make. When I walked in it smelled wonderful! The lady behind the counter asked if she could help me and I told her about wanting bread. Sadly, they do not make the kind I was looking for until Wednesday so I decided to try a pastry since I was there. In the process of trying to decide, she was rude, seemed to not have any time to answer my questions and basically made me feel like I was takiing up her precious time. This is what a neighborhood family owned and run bakery should be! You can tell the true warmth and pride in what they do, from the counter person greeting you, to Mom, Daughters and I'm guessing Grandkids, working at something they love. The cakes are wonderful, the always great, the decorated cupcakes and sugar cookies always look and taste like they should. The breads are to the point of, why get it at a chain store? This stuff is so much better! The Pretzels, yeah, but ya gotta get there early, or, call in and order! The Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Cookies.....
