I have been going to Herbs since I moved to Elgin 10 years ago. Last year I noticed different people behind the counter. I noticed different items such as kolatczis. However, I recently bought some of those and the claws. I also bought the cake donuts. I was very, very disappointed with the quality. The filling was very dry, like it was sitting for days! I had to throw it out! The donuts tasted like instead of butter, it was more lard or shortening. The quality that use to be there is not there anymore! I looked at the cake designs on their web site and they look so cheesy! It was never like that before! I also noticed that the present owner, I'm assuming she is, is usually the only one behind the counter. If she really wants more customers and previous customers to come back, she needs to return to the quality of what it was before. I bet the the people who give it good reviews have not been to this bakery when the previous owners were there. They would immediately notice the difference! I will not be going there anymore. It is so sad to see what was such a great bakery for years go down like that. I wish the previous owners had found someone who were as good as they were! No stars! Adding only 1 because I'm required to add it!!! read more

I've lived in Elgin for 18 years, but never gone to Herb's. But I've heard great things. So decided to order my husband's grandmother's 100th birthday cake from them. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but something different than a Costco sheet cake. The young man working the counter was very helpful! He actually came up with the idea for an ombre rosette cake. It was just perfect...many oohs & aahs from the guests! Thank you, Herb's!! Note: I bought the 100 years loved sign on Amazon. read more

Herb's Bakery - a pink and white cake on a silver platter - Bakeries Near Me - Elgin, Illinois

When our favorite bakery closed down, we tried Herb's for my son's birthday cake. We were so beyond disappointed. We asked for a Star Wars themed cake and while it had a picture on it, the colors were all wrong for Star Wars and it looks like an amateur did all the piping. Everyone knows light sabers are blue and red, not a weird orange and brown. Even the piping along the top edge of the cake was crooked. The flavors were merely ok. For what we got from a bakery that supposedly has a ton of experience, we could have gone to the grocery and gotten better. We will most definitely not be back and our hunt for a fantastic bakery continues. read more

Don't get your wedding cake here unless you want to triple check on accuracy of design. We used a vendor that uses Herb's when booking with them for your wedding. I was not concerned at all with Herb's reputation and years of experience. Wish I had been more concerned... I had talked to them about a week or so prior to the wedding as well to add a sweets table to our day and I wanted to surprise my groom with a cake. (those both went great and tasted amazing). When we arrived at our venue for a sneak peak, I see a peach and cream colored cake with peach flowers atop of it... Our cake was suppose to be brown tree rings (like our centerpieces) with burnt orange hydrangeas (artificial that we were fine with). Our colors were burnt orange and navy... not peach. I was beyond disappointed by our cake. We now have pictures with this cake that I hated... If you do use Herb's just be sure to triple check your design choice. They do not verify it unless you ask, I sadly found out the hard way. read more

My husband and I decided to postpone our big wedding celebration until 2021 due to COVID, but got married with our immediate family members this past October. We wanted to have a small cake to cut into and individually wrapped cupcakes for our family to take home with them. We could not have been happier with how our cakes turned out!! Herb's accommodated our request for individually wrapped cupcakes, cake iced exactly as I hoped, delivered everything to our ceremony, and tasted incredible! We can't wait for our "part 2" wedding cake in 2021. Thank you Herbs! read more

Herb's Bakery has been bookmarked for a bit too long. I was driving down Route 20 toward my Mom's house on a Saturday morning when I remembered this bookmark. Herb's was just a few short minutes off of Route 20 and so I stopped. Parking in their side parking lot was easy. Making my mouth-watering decisions bordered on downright difficult. I truly received top notch service at this bakery. The associate helping me was so helpful and patient! It was banana creme pie day, so I left with a mini pie and a few more treats than I planned on. Treats included cookies, a chocolate eclair, a cupcake, a danish and an apple fritter. There were four of us, so everything was split up for tasting and opinions. The cupcake had a great fudgy frosting, but was a tad overbaked. The eclair was lovely. The Danish and the fritter were both worth stopping for again and we loved the mini pie. The cookies were not memorable. I quickly learned that this was the local Saturday morning hot spot. And everyone who walked in knew the staff and they knew the clientele. It was a nice warm, fuzzy feeling sort of place. Plus, I snagged a pretzel roll that was delicious and warmed up my tummy for the rest of my drive out to my Mom's house. read more

We hired Herb's for our wedding and have no regrets. They hands down had the best carrot cake of any bakery we tried (and we tried five of them). We ordered cupcakes and cookies and they were gone by the end of the night. Everything tasted homemade and delicious. They were also crazy affordable! definitely a home town hero read more

Got a cannoli cake for grandma's and grandfather's anniversary, first off it didn't look like it was made in a bakery, and that was ok cause the taste was what we're looking forward too but the taste was not good. read more

While they have many items, my favorite baked item that Herbs has is their pretzel roll. It is a bit crispy on the outside and has a very soft pretzel middle. They have pretzel balls, sticks & covered in cheese. They may have others, but I have had all 3 of them and they are amazing treats! They sell out early. They open @ 0600AM and I have had the best luck getting their when they open. The other items I have had their have been good to ok. For me and my family, its all about Herbs pretzels! read more

I've been looking for a good cruller for ages. The last cruller I had was years ago in high school, and that one had been from Dunkin Donuts lol. So I was excited when I came across one of my yelp friend's reviews mentioning crullers (HI KEITH! haha). I called them and asked if they had any in stock, and the friendly young woman replied with the affirmative, that they had two varieties. Being a chocolate lover, I made the easy choice of going with the chocolate-frosted cruller. Upon my first bite, it was everything that I expected in a good cruller- a soft, plush texture accented by the melting sweetness of the chocolate frosting. It wasn't overly sweet at all, and there was a balance to the donut. Very fresh too. The inside texture reminded me of an English popover, a bit eggy and light. Out of the many bakeries that I've been to in the US and Asia, I've never seen an almond pretzel like how Herb's Bakery does theirs, so I had to try that. And I'm so glad I did because it performed better than my expectations. I was expecting a flaky pastry stick sort, but this pretzel pastry had a strand of almond cookie dough that lent a slight chew to each bite. It was sprinkled heftily with sliced almonds. Delicious! read more

Herb's did a great job for my godson's Avengers themed bday cake and cupcakes! I was flying in from out of town for the party weekend and was a bit nervous about ordering a specialty cake from across the country. After finding them online, I decided to call and I'm so glad I did! I had several calls with them about what I wanted and hat they could do - Wendy and Yvonne (or was it Deevonne?) were responsive, patient, and extremely helpful. The cake was perfect for him and his little munchkin friends and all the parents were quite impressed as well. Design was just what we wanted and the cake was delicious! Vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting (kept it simple for the kids) and choc cake with fudge filling and vanilla cake with custard. I ordered a two tier cake (serves 20) and 25 cupcakes. We had plenty of cake left and when the vanilla custard tier was eaten a few days after the party, it was still moist and delicious! I had already left by then, but got a couple if great photos of a great cake-face-mess! Thank you Herb's for coming through! :) on a side note, the display cases at the store when I picked up the cake looked amazing. Next time I visit the area, I will need to go and try other things! read more

Herb's Bakery is the best in the area. I have been a customer for years. The donuts are amazing; crunch donut is the very best, so addicting. Get up early on Saturday; they go fast!!! I love Herb's. I was looking for a special cake or dessert for a dinner, and I was amazed at what Herbs had to offer. I settled on a vanilla cake with white chocolate curls. YUM! Everyone was enjoying it and it was no problem sending the leftovers home with everyone else (so they didn't stay behind in my house). I also bought cookies to take to a friend in the hospital who needed cheering up. Wow were they good! And, a loaf of the bread... oh the bread. Everything is great. Honestly though, with regards to another reviewer--if you think Jewel is "good" you probably won't think Herbs is anything special. If you prefer to give your business to a sole proprietor (and not corporate America) and have higher standards than Jewel, Herbs is a great solution. read more

Looked through the reviews and noticed one measly mention of pretzel rolls, but not one iota of a peep about their finest product?!? a little background, cue the violin... I used to work at St. Joes, which is about a mile down the street and given my frequent proximity to this place, I never made it to the bakery before work because, well, I was always hurrying to get to work on time. Thank G for 7 minute grace. Well anyway, one day a sales rep brought a couple boxes of goodies from Herb's to us, to munch on as he gave his presentation on why his companies products are better, cheaper, etc. We never listen to sales reps that bring food. If you want people to honestly listen to your pitch, you should probably bring two day old pizza, or gruel, either gray or brown colored. First box opened was all doughnuts, all kinds, raised, cake, glazed, sprinkled, crullers. Of course I ate the cruller. It's only my favorite doughnut. Second box opened contained the strange rolls that resembled a stretched pretzel that had a strange crust on top of it. And these pretzel sticks might have been pretty plain jane had it not been for that strange crust. Well wouldn't you know it, that strange crust is cheese. Cheese that must have at one time been kind of melty and gooey, but in present form had been baked to a crisp. And it is this sublime addition that elevates their pretzel into an otherworldly celestial treat. It's been 4 and a half years since I had my first pretzel cheese stick, and I haven't seen anything like it ever since. read more

I got a birthday cake here for my guy for his birthday. A three layer chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and buttercream frosting. And after ordering it a week prior to the event and pre-paying for it, the morning of (2 hours before I'm supposed to pick it up) they called to ask, is it 2 or 3 layers? And then when I said, 3 layers and its paid for... They tell me the girl didn't charge me for an additional layer of mousse and there would be an additional charge when I get into the shop. And it was.... Eh. Just ok. Not bad. But nothing to really rave about. The frosting was very greasy/lard-y and had a long lasting and unpleasant after taste. The cake was moist but the chocolate seemed like more of a chalky chocolate. It just didn't seem right. The mousse filling was good though. It helped to cut the frosting. I would be willing to maybe try some of their other items (they had some amazing looking items in the cases in the shop) but this one just wasn't thrilling. I would not order a cake here again. It just wasn't mine or our taste. Some people might like it though... Depends on your tastes really. read more

We were very excited based on reviews here, but the service was fair and the cake we bought was mediocre. The selection of cakes is smaller than we anticipated, but there are still plenty to choose from. We bought a chocolate cake with buttermilk chocolate icing and chocolate fudge filling. The icing was way to sweet and it was inconsistent. The staff was not as assertive as they could have been, and a waiting line was unclear or nonexistent. We had to ask a few times before we got someone's attention. read more

My grandmother lives in Elgin and my family has been enjoying herbs donuts for 20+ years. All the donuts are phenomenal but my favorites are the twist and the crunch donut. Make sure you call ahead and place an order if you plan on going in later in the morning they are super helpful with accommodating to later pick ups when called ahead. read more

Herb's Bakery is a cute little bakery that offers so many different things, which makes it hard to just walk out of there with one item. Today was my first day here because my rotation has luckily placed me in Elgin, only a mere 6 minutes away from Herb's. I bought a few doughnuts, cupcakes, and a brownie to share with the people at my rotation. Everything was really tasty. I loved the frosting on their cupcakes. You can tell all of it is homemade with fresh ingredients. I had a delicious strawberry butter cream chocolate cupcake. Yum! The prices here are amazing as well. At other bakeries that I have been to, I've paid double, even triple, than what I paid at Herb's. Overall, a great bakery and definitely a place I will visit again. read more

The few times I've been here, the bakery items that I have bought have been ok. The yellow cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes were ok...a little dry. The peanut butter cookies were hard and lacking in flavor. The brownies are decent. I did once get a chocolate cake from the display case and that was really good. Nice and moist and full of flavor. The donuts aren't bad either. Why the 4 stars? I'll tell you why. I decided to give this bakery one more try and ordered a custom cake for my child's birthday. White cake with fresh strawberries...and OMG it was soooooo good. Friends who normally don't like sweets were asking for seconds. This may just be my new go to place for birthday cakes. read more

They baked my daughters communion cake. It was a double layer of yellow cake with buttercream filling and strawberries in the middle. It was more than enough to feed everybody and had tons of leftovers. Everybody was raving about how good the cake was, so we will definitely be using them again. This was pretty good but a long haul for a donut. Okay so I got up and decided to go out on a food adventure. I followed the yelp reviews for bakeries and I was on a mission to get a chocolate croissant. The first place I went to was St Rogers Abbey. Reviews sound like this might be the place to try. Yeah that is until I pulled up and they were out of business. Sad but not really surprised. So from there I decide to go to Elgin to try Herbs. I pulled in and have to admit I was underwhelmed by the pastry case. Usually the sign of a fabulous bakery is an outstanding looking display of yummy pastries. Not here! Then to top it off now croissants. Thats a bad sign at a bakery. At this point I'm just hungry so I decided to settle on a donut and almond pretzel. The pretzel was really good. Crisp outside yet a chewy finish made it really tasty. The donut, well it was a donut. Nothing was bad but nothing was great it was all just pretty good. read more

I ordered cupcakes for my son's birthday a couple weeks back and provided them with a photo of what I wanted. The cupcakes were based on Baymax from Disney's Big Hero 6. They came out pretty good, with the exception of the eyes. I'm not sure why, but they added white dots to the center of the eyes, which was not included in the photo. I would have preferred it as pictured, as the addition of the white dots made the eyes look like those plastic googly eyes --off center and shaky. That being said, everyone thought the cupcakes were cute, and as always, they were delicious! We did chocolate and lemon flavored. I've attached a photo. Thanks! read more
