Good place to stop and rest. Lot of shaded areas and several picnic tables. Found a voice activated mirowave hanging on the wall (LOL)

The closest city to this rest area along I-5 is actually Firebaugh. The full name of this place is…read morethe "John Erreca Safety Roadside Rest Area", named after a former Director of Public Works who also served without pay as mayor of the city of Los Banos for 17 years. What? A hard-working public official not in it for the money? You won't find many of those today! There are two separate rest areas here on opposite sides of the highway - it was probably cheaper to do that than build an overpass! This review is for the one on the southbound side; the one on the northbound side is probably identical. The brick and wood buildings are showing their age, but the restrooms are still relatively clean, and there are double restrooms (two for men, two for women)! You'll also find covered picnic tables, a pet area, water fountains, payphones (there are probably only a handful left in California, three of which are here), and vending machines including two that have gourmet coffee. Classy! There are separate parking lots for cars and for bigrigs, and they both accommodate a lot of vehicles, so this place should be able to handle even holiday traffic decently. Which is necessary, since I-5 gets bad during the holidays, and all those people stuck on the road need somewhere to use the bathroom! The room was a standard Hampton room, and at $130 for the evening, about the standard price. Location was convenient just a short drive off of I-5. I'd stay here again, though I missed the 6am breakfast as I hit the road to Vegas at 5am!

We arrived around 9:00 pm after a long day of driving. Once we got to our room, it was clear the cleaning had not been completed. In the bathroom there was a used washcloth draped over the shampoo dispenser in the shower, a used bar of soap in the soap dish by the sink, the toilet seat was up, napkins on the table by the bed. These things put us on high alert so we checked the bed, where we found hairs on the sheets. We immediately reported it to the front desk, who told us the hotel was full so they couldn't move us. So, we asked for clean bedding so we could change the sheets. After 3 attempts, we got the correct size sheets and were able to sleep there. I made three attempts to talk to the owners/managers, but they did not call back. I then lodged a complaint with Hilton. They contacted the hotel who said they were unwilling to do anything about it. I find it alarming that they are okay with what happened! So, I guess the message is that it's fine when there are no issues but if you have any, don't expect the owners to do anything about it!
