I recently Herat Market today after hearing it was under new ownership, and I have to say, the changes are noticeable! The new management has clearly put effort into improving the shopping experience, and it shows. There's a better selection of products, especially in Pastry that standout areas like fresh produce, household goods, specialty items. Been customer of this halal food market for years now! You can find Afghan and Pakistani I food related items here including great selection of amazing spices. Frozen hot links, beef and Turkey bacon strips as well as fresh meat and poultry from their butchery. They also bake fresh Afghan bread at this place. They have some seasonal exotic fruits here like Afghan grapes, sweet mangoes and delicious pomegranates (best to call store prior to visiting for these fruits) wide selection of dried fruits and nuts. They have baked goods as well also delicious corn breads. Exotic pickles and quality mango, grapes, guava and pomegranate drinks. They also sell quality tea sets and other decorative high end tea cutlery. They treat customers with respect,accept cash, debt, credit, ebt as well, store is a nice size but it's fully stocked so walk around carefully haha, im not gona say their prices are affordable or expensive because they do sell quality merchandise. You can find the best pre-marinated chicken kabobs here! My mom shops here more than I do, but every time she's there I ask her to order a few pounds of the raw chicken kabob to bring home. It's $8.99 a pound and taste like restaurant style when you grill it on the bbq at home. I'm not an expert on the bbq but I can easily bbq a few skewers for myself and it come out really really good. Buying pre-marinated kabob saves me the energy and time. The recipe is also absolutely perfect so you can't go wrong. Do yourself a big favor and give it a try sometime!! read more

Everyone in the store is super friendly and has the biggest smiles on their faces. The food is great and in fresh condition. I tried the owners secret recipe chicken kebabs and they were phenomenal! I didn't have to add any extra ingredients. I just cooked them as they were. It was the easiest dinner I have made in a while!! Nice family-owned butcher shop in the heart of Newark. The workers are great and friendly. I enquired them about the place where they source their chicken from and one of the butchers patiently answered all my questions. The chicken here is better than any other organic chicken I have purchased. Shop always smell nice because of the bakery they have in the back. I would love to purchase free-range chicken. read more

We have tried so many halal markets in the Bay Area, even those reviewed on Bay Area Halal Foodies/Yelp and others in the Fremont/Newark area. We miss our regular butcher from Aladdin market in San Mateo, but finally we found Herat (through a very targeted Facebook question I asked to a group of Muslims in the Bay Area). These guys consistently cut the meat properly. No chops in a lamb leg. Pieces are the same size. A chicken isn't missing pieces or has extra necks/rib cages. Many halal markets precut meat and don't cut to order. I am not sure what Herat does, but I've never had an issue. They are our go to market after searching for 6 years. Before, they were only a few minutes away from our house, now they are a half an hour round trip from my house and it will not deter me. They are simply consistently the best. This store never disappoints! Not only they provide excellent customer service, the food is also great especially their Naan and kabobs! Whenever we have a BBQ this is the only store I go to. NEVER go in here. NEVER. They rip EVERYBODY off by charging at least 50% on the regular price. I am Iranian and I know what I am talking about. Their bread is dry, their dairy is old, and most of all their owners are thieves. I have gone there on 10 different occasions because they were my "local Persian store" but they are DEFINITELY replaceable. Super awesome Market providing Afhgani and regional spices and other food delicacies .They offer halal meats at the back counter and butcher their own meat so you can request great cuts. Usually two men run and operate the Market they can be very helpful is you just ask. The ground beef there is grounded perfectly a mix of 50 /50 meat and fat the "golden" ratio for great Koftas and kebab. I always grab my ground beef for parties or guest I want to impress from here. At the front counter they offer out of this world light and creamy cream puff rolls daily available until tray is sold. Believe me these cream puff rolls are über dangerous because my friends are still raving about how crumb seeking delicious the cream puff rolls are so popular I tend to buy the whole tray when I'm there. Sorry for those who come after and wonder why the puffs keep disappearing , they found a home in San Jose. Yum! Herat market is a small market but packed with great authentic items like an assortment of nuts, dried fruits , spices, yogurts, Halal meats , freshly made creams ( real chunky white heavenly cream) and bread . If you have traveled to the Middle East or been invited into a middle eastern home and wanted to find some authenticly delicious items to recreate a meal , Herat is a hidden gem! read more

I went in today to get some marinated ground chicken since Kabul Market was closed and the meat guy was very rude. He was trying to sell me "mixed ground beef and chicken " and I said "no thanks I just need ground chicken " and he said no we don't have that " even after they have ground chicken and could've marinated it. The BREAD---AMAZING I come from the South Bay, just to get the bread in spite of the awful traffic! The guy at the register is very nice, the baker was awesome (they were out of wheat bread and he made it fresh for me). Herat Mkt is the best place to get halal meat and other good quality products, such as dried fruit, produce, bakery items. I have been to so many other places, in the Tri-City arean, and only one other compares. The chicken here is always fresh and unlike some other stores I've shopped from, I've never gotten sick or saw/smelled anything funny, questionable or off with the meat. The seasoned ground beef and chicken kebab meat are absolutely delicious and I've introduced them to some friends who also enjoyed them a lot. Despite living in Hayward, I still go out of my way to get my meat and other things from here. I'd recommend them to anyone who's looking for a good, clean, reasonably priced halal store (which also happens to carry the second best naan in the SF Bay Area!) read more

Very friendly people run this store. Fair prices. They gave my kid some candies so I could figure out what it was I needed. They even ground fresh lamb for me to make domathes (my great-grandfathers recipe called for lamb). It's so hard to find fresh ground lamb around here for a fair price. Safeway doesnt carry it. I don't know the name for Afghan bread, so that's what I'm gonna call it. The Afghan bread is fabulous and always fresh. Though this place is small, it has so much variety. If you're feeling hungry, but don't want to dine and also want to shop, go to Herat Market. Grab some bread and a spread or that awesome green dip they serve fresh, and you'll be in heaven. Get some dried fruit, and you're good to go. I sure wish they had a table outside! A lot of folks come here for meats, but I've not purchased the meat (and so I can't give it 5 stars because I know that's the major draw for many, though not me).
