Lions Supermarket basically sells mostly Asian products. I don't really go to this supermarket because they might have not have products I want. For example, I was looking for sparkling water but unfortunately they don't sell those. The good thing is that most products are cheaper here compared to other grocery stores. This is a old fashioned Asian market located in Newark . There are many restaurants in the same parking lot . We usually go eat lunch in one of the restaurants then shop the grocery after . The building is old but the market is kept clean . They have a variety's of fresh vegetables, seafood on ice , instant noodles , seasonings for cooking , snacks , etc . The price is better than Ranch 99 and newer market like H mart. The public restroom in the mall is clean . Could be hard to find parking in front of the store . This is one of the older larger Asian grocery stores in the tri-city area. It is at least 25 years old and is the anchor to this large strip mall and set the tone for turning this strip into a predominantly Asian foodie corner. Lots of small restaurants surround this market, probably every Asian country represented. Now when they built this market, they actually built a mini-mall where little shops can lease spaces all under one roof, with this market being the main central space. For being kinda divey, mostly due to age, there is a ton of marble inside the mall that gives it an opulent shine to the eye. This store is similar to 99 Ranch except it is not as well stocked. It is also not as polished and pretty as any Asian grocery store built within the last 10 years, those are on another level for some reason. Older stores tend to look more old world, and seems to attract more of the 1st gen immigrants. HMart and the newer Asian grocery stores tend attract more acclimated Americanized immigrants. Now even though divey, I can still find most things I'm looking for. The shellfish tanks aren't as stocked as my usual Asian grocery stores, but the fish on ice is not bad, you just have to know how to pick out freshness. I actually rarely get any fresh meats here, as I have my places for those. But produce and pantry supplies this place is just as good, if not cheaper than 99 Ranch. I actually like how in their produce section, things aren't bagged in bundles, so if I want to just buy 1-2 eggplants or bittermelon, I can. At Ranch I always have to buy a bag/several, which is kinda annoying to me. I tend to only come here if I'm already eating somewhere in this strip. So for that occasional hit-up, this place is more than just fine for me. 4 stars to hopefully offset some of the more nit-picky reviews. Lol read more

There are really good Asian products here, particularly for the vegetarians looking for fake meats. The produce section isn't great however. If you go late in the day, the produce is pretty limited with only the leftover unwanted things which is unfortunate. Parking is also an issue too, especially on the weekend. Overall not bad however, but I can see that the prices have gotten more expensive. read more

This Lion is conveniently located on my drive home from the office so I come regularly to buy what i need to prep for dinner. Another plus is that the Lion Market plaza has good restaurant options if i decided not to cook for dinner. Price wise, i feel lion is a hit & miss compares to 99 Ranch, but Lion has more Vietnamese & other southeast asian varieties, so that is another reason to shop here. read more

I stopped by to pick up some unique Asian groceries since I was in the area. It has most of the Asian brands that you can't find in a normal US supermarket, but the selection is smaller compare to other Asian supermarket chains in the area. The floor seems dirty and the smell is pretty strong. The clerk was a bit cold and didn't help me put my groceries into bags at all during check out. I will be hesitant to return. read more

It's like a 99 Ranch. It's a little cluttery here. There are stuff I'll find here but not at 99 Ranch and vice versa. They do have a good selection of items here. Prices are lower here compared to 99 Ranch. I would still rather go to 99 Ranch about 10-15 minutes away. I've been here quite a handful of times and never had a negative experience here. The employees here were ok. There were only a handful of people working the registers so be prepare to wait. read more

I was at the checkout, an Asian woman jumped in front of me, pushed my items back and told the cashier she was in a hurry and to take her ahead of me. I was calm, expecting the cashier to do her job and to inform the woman that she would have to get in line behind me. But no!!! She tells me in English to wait. ( I've taught Mandarin students before, I knew everything they were saying before she switched languages. I was shopping in an Asian grocery store - why would she just assume that I couldn't understand them??!!) The customer, or the employee, could have asked if that awful woman could go in front of me. These women embarrassed their families, obviously not raised properly. Rude and unladylike. Could be better but still love going here because it's the closest place to get a crazy variety of different asian stuff we grew up with. You'll find chinese stuff but also thai, philipino, vietnamese, korean, japanese, etc... they will carry a lot of snacks and brands you will only find at asian markets. We love the crazy amount of rice and noodles you can find and are always trying different brands. The vegetables and fruit section will have a bunch of stuff you can also find in asian markets as well. We also find stuff here like Sriracha where the packaging design and taste haven't changed at all in decades like oyster sauce, canned dace fish, etc... When you walk in during the morning there will be an incense smell and its pretty chilly near the back where the live fish are and the meat. We don't really get meat or fish here since the quality doesn't seem that great. The salmon we got one time didn't seem very good quality, the chicken we got for chicken soup seemed OK but the soup had way more yellow oil than chicken from other places. read more

Attention! DO NOT SHOP AT THIS PLACE ! They steal customers' $ by double charged one item on purpose! This was not the first time happened to me. The first time was one year ago near lunar New year, I bought lots of food then found out a couple days later that the cashier extra charged me one item which cost me 10 dollars more. Last week, I bought 2 markerels from this market. They looked good outside, but when I washed the fish, the meat loosened up and fell apart. I went to Lion Market because I saw that they had the brown sugar boba ice cream. I normally do not shop here. I have been on the hunt for them and so happy to see they were there! But $10.99 for 4 pack?!! Ranch 99 sells them for $6.99, but I've never actually seen them (just the sign for them, lol). Even though the price was extremely inflated, I did buy a few boxes. This is a typical Asian market. Don't come looking for your pretty whole foods or sprouts. What you see is what you get. But the prices for the cuts you expect are reasonable. I get my porks, chicken, and some Asian cuts of beef here for my Asian Co King and koreanbbk cooking. Also, some frozen hot pot meats. I get my specialty sauces here as well and seasonings. This place is home for my mom. She's like a kid in a candy store when she's here. This place has everything she needs (granted she does cook Asian food for the most part). The workers are all pretty friendly and the check-out ladies wear gloves so this place is decently safe/ COVID friendly. It's not the largest Asian supermarket, not like the ones in San Jose, but still a decent size. This place is also in a plaza with lots of yummy places to eat around it, such as the small hole-in-the-wall dim sum restaurant right outside of the store (that place is actually really good, so I'll probably right a review on that place after this haha). There's also a decent Vietnamese sandwich shop right outside the main doors. Basically, after you're done grocery shopping, there's lots of places to pick up ready to eat food or little snacks. This place has the worst customer service out of all of the Asian supermarkets I've been to. I was walking around looking for hot pot propane and had passed by the seafood section. I saw that crabs were on sale so I immediately texted my husband to ask if he wanted some for dinner. A few minutes later, I went and stood in front of the seafood counter (directly in front of the scale) and patiently waited for my turn. There were 2 employees behind the seafood counter and no one acknowledged me or even looked at me. There was only 1 customer (besides me) at that time. After that customer had received her items, the employee that was helping her, walked to the back counter and pretended that he didn't see me. Then another employee walked by and I wanted to flag him down but he walked to the side to help another customer that just showed up. I was getting very aggravated at that moment but I still stood there and patiently waited. After he was done with that customer, he finally looked at me and asked what I wanted. I told him that I wanted 2 crabs and he gave me 2 from a tank that had no water in it. I didn't want to deal with them anymore so I just took the crabs and left. The cashiers at this place never says "hi" or even smiles when you say "hello" to them. I usually shop at 99 Ranch but they didn't have certain items that Lion has; otherwise, I would never come here. read more

I'm honestly whatever about this place because I only come here for one reason and that one reason is for my Mother dearest. She loves coming here because 1) it's the only closest Lion Market to where we live 2) she loves getting the frozen Swai fishes here and the Jumbo Shrimps 3) whenever it's a good deal she gets her veggies and some other Chinese stuff here as well I personally think this place is okay because things could be a lot cleaner and produce could be a lot fresher. What's cool is that Lion Market is located around other stores/restaurants in a big plaza. The layout of this location is very unique. Built entirely under the frame of a former Service Merchandise, this indoor Chinese mall reminds me of a miniature version of the ones found in Vancouver or Toronto, but rarely seen in California. It houses a variety of small shops, ranging from a Fantasia Coffee & Tea, Sogo Bakery, New China Station BBQ, Red Kwali Hawker Cuisine (temporarily closed), England Rose Garden, Konyac (not cognac) Healthy Drink, and of course, the Lion Supermarket itself. There was also a Taiwanese-style teppanyaki restaurant (think Benihana, but with Taiwanese or Chinese chefs), but unfortunately, it has gone belly up. The Taiwanese cuisine next door to it has also disappeared, now replaced with a sushi shop. I have not patronized all of the businesses, but here are my thoughts on a few of the shops: Tara Books - This is a branch of the popular store in Cupertino Village. It is a great source for all your Asian magazines, from HK or Taiwanese celebrity gossip, to Japanese fashion. They also carry a wide array of HK movies, and Taiwanese, Korean, and Japanese dramas (all with Chinese subtitles). The CD selection is limited, however, and a bit on the pricy end. Their books are all in Chinese, so you might be lost if you can't read it, but they do have some great travel guides and children's stories, as well as business manuals. Fantasia - By far, the most relaxing and soothing atmosphere of all the Fantasias. Unfortunately, it is also the most empty. I feel sorry for this place because so many people window shop, but no one goes inside. I hope they survive for the long haul because this is one of my favorite spots to study. New China Station - This is pretty much your run-of-the-mill HK style bbq shop. Their plate lunches are okay, but beware of the free pearl milk tea they give you. It is really disgusting. Sogo Bakery - In the same vein as Kee Wah or Sheng Kee, this is your typical Chinese bakery with a variety of western-influenced delights. Feast upon their variations of bear claws, hotdog croissants, and a variety of confections. Chinese style birthday cakes also tend to be less sweet than what is normally found in American bakeries. England Rose Garden - This is a one of a kind place. Decorated lavishly like a fine English diner, this Taiwanese owned shop offers a variety of British teas in a relaxing environment. Please don't ask me how Taiwanese people are purveyors of British teas (HK would at least make more sense), but I guess they seem to know what they are doing. The food is decent, but not quite up to par with the teas. Lion Supermarket - I'm a guy, okay. A supermarket is a supermarket is a supermarket. This one certainly fits the bill, so no complaints here. This place lacks customer service.Once I stood next to counter where you buy lotto tickets etc. I stood there almost 15 minutes while different employees zoomed by me. When I do buy something from the produce area it's mainly a green leaf items and prepackaged things. The fruits are not very fresh here,they have that grown in bad soil appearance. The odors coming from the seafood department can be let's use the word "ripe" and navigating the store can be touch and go, since the isles are not very wide. An okay Asian market. As I entered on the left side, there was a bargain area called grocery specials which were mainly overstocked cans and larger sized items. The produce department's next in view. This was the best part of the place since it all looked fresh, and new stuff was constantly being set out. The fish and meat department is in the back. The rest of the store was really hard to maneuver about with a shopping cart, since the aisles are super narrow, and often there was a pallet of something blocking half the aisle. I literally had to backup when someone else was heading down the aisle in the opposite direction. Plenty of checkout lanes were open, and I received quick and friendly service. The biggest negative is that they have signs telling you not to do something at practically every turn. The one I disliked the most was the one instructing you not to separate the bananas. I've gotta say, grocery stores like this feel like an adventure when you're used to the typical grocery experience of the Western world. Around every corner seems to lurk a new "what the heck is THAT??" situation. Dried squid treats? They got 'em. Most of us have only seen durians in an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, never in the produce aisle at the local grocery store. Gotta love the diversity that we enjoy here in the Bay Area.. Like many of the reviewers have already mentioned, I do find the smell that lingers in parts of this store to be off-putting. This isn't a huge grocery store, so it definitely looks like the narrow aisles are jam packed with as much merchandise as they could possibly fit. Similar to my experience with Mi Pueblo on the other side of Newark, the music seems just a little too loud in here. This store is super close to where I stay when I'm in Newark, so I give them bonus points for convenience. Most of the produce looked very nice and I wouldn't be opposed to stopping in here if I was short on time. The seafood and meat counters had extensive offerings and just about everything looked fresh. The prices here also seem lower than at your typical Safeway or Trader Joe's. I also saw some bottles of random Asian beers that I've never heard of for about $1.99. 99 Ranch on the opposite end of Newark seems very similar to Lion Supermarket. If you want to avoid the odd smell and get more or less the same experience, you don't have to go far. read more

Argh - the music here drives me crazy!!! It is loud and cacophonous (first time I used that word in a review)! And yes, like other reviewers have stated, I have smelled better supermarkets as well. The customers seem to be a bit more aggro than other supermarkets I've been to - something about not having a concept of personal space. Located at the end of an indoor mall of sorts, Lion Supermarket has everything from seafood to rice cookers to produce. I scored some fresh green coconuts here for a little over a buck each. I bought about nine that lasted a couple of weeks. Price-wise, I find that Ranch 99 has better deals and seems more organized. I find, however, that the restaurants in this area tend to be better than the Ranch 99 in Newark. Other than that, I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back. read more

Interesting plaza filled with a medley of shops, food, and goods. The supermarket itself has a wide selection and a great variety of produce, frozen, spices, fish, and snacks. Three stars because it is not very clean. Quite dirty and makes me feel uncomfortable considering that I buy some needed specialty ethnic foods there. This Lion Supermarket has been here in Newark for quite a while now and is a pretty unique one because it's like it's own little shopping mall. Before you even get to the store itself, you pass by various different restaurants and businesses. It's like an indoor Chinese shopping mall, that you don't see often. Although, we usually shop for our Chinese Groceries at 99 Ranch Market, we sometimes come here if in the area, or even Marina Foods sometimes. The store itself is pretty good in size, I mean it's decent sized. It's your typical Chinese Grocery Store however it does not have a Chinese Deli for purchasing freshly prepared Chinese food, like 99 Ranch Market and Marina offer. However inside the mall, there is a restaurant where you can purchase food like that. The produce section here is pretty small, but they also do put some produce outside the store, in the mall which makes it a little bigger I guess. The produce is okay, some may not be fresh or worth purchasing, but most of them are okay to buy. The Live Seafood Section and Fresh Meat Section, are alright. The Live Seafood and Fresh Fish seem fresh and look nice for the most part. They should really however fix and make the Seafood Area, specifically, were the Live Tanks are, more presentable. They should redo that whole area, it looks pretty bad....and some of the stuff even leaks, hence why you can see newspaper spreaded throughout that area of the store. The rest of the store, where they have different Asian products and goods is alright. Never purchased anything from the Bakery aisle though, so can't say much about the bread there. The prices here are alright, some items are cheaper to purchase here than at 99 Ranch Market or Marina, then again there are items that would cheaper to purchase at 99 Ranch Market and or Marina. To be honest, I think the whole store needs a remodel, haha. It's old, outdated, dirty, and not all that well kept. However the one thing with this Supermarket is there ridiculous store policies!!! Here are two (2) of their store polices: "Sorry! On Sale Items, No Services & Clean!" Really, wtf!? What kind of Supermarket does not allow on sale items to be cleaned and get service!? I mean like seriously, do you not want our business....why offer it on sale if we can't get it cleaned or serviced! "If the merchandise cost is over $50.00 and you need our service (cut or clean), please pay at the check stand first. We will service you with the register receipt." Really, what you think someone is gonna order that much of a large order of meat or seafood and not pay!? Customer Service: The workers here are pretty efficient, and they tend work pretty fast. It seems like the workers here like working here compared to like most other Chinese Supermarkets. They actually speak to the customers and say "Hello" and "Thank you", which you hardly get at most Chinese Supermarkets. Shopping Carts: The shopping carts are located in front of the store before entering the shopping mall. They recently added and got some brand new shopping carts, for customers to use while shopping throughout the store. They also have plenty of hand baskets to use while shopping throughout the store, if you don't want a hassle of a shopping cart, grab a basket put your goodies inside and then leave the basket with the goodies on the check out line! Parking is definitely a struggle here. This shopping center is always packed full of people coming to shop, eat, and shop! Parking is really a struggle especially with all those shopping carts. Bad quality fruit and very poor service! I bought an expensive bag of lychees recently. Threw away the receipt as they looked fine at the time of purchase. The next morning, the whole bag had FUNGUS on the inside. When I called to check about this the store said they will not honor a return / exchange without a receipt. There's a certain amount of trust that goes into buying food from a store. By selling "nearly rotten" produce (that looks fine initially) they are banking on the fact that consumers will not be able to get refunds because they won't retain receipts if it looks ok when bought. Good prices, small parking lot, and narrow aisles. From the exterior, you'd expect Lion to take up the majority of the building, but it doesn't. Inside is a small mall consisting of Asian hair salons, deli's, and shops. Squished in the back is Lion itself. Lion feels cramped even inside. The aisles are narrower comparable markets like Marina and Ranch 99. Furthermore, there's no room for the checkout lines to extend outward so they always block the aisle and extend into the freezer sections. On the plus side, there's usually a good number of cashiers. Unfortunately, my update is not because I cashed in on last week's $92 million jackpot. However, I am still in the running for tomorrow's $130 million jackpot. Actually, I went back to Lion this past weekend because Mom & Pops knew the winner of the $35 million jackpot so they wanted to come here hoping that lightning strikes twice. This time, we did actually walked around and do some shopping at Lion Food Center. It's actually a little bigger and better than I remember, but the aisles are as narrow as I remember so even with the smaller shopping carts, you're playing bumper carts as you go down the aisle. Aside from the challenges down the aisle, I did find some good stuff at Lion that I didn't expect: - Hawaiian Sun soda for 59 or 69 cents a can. Much cheaper than the $2 they charge you at L&L - Sweet & spicy mango strips - Filipino Marketplace section which included almost a full aisle of halo halo mixes! I am coming back here to pick up the exact ingredients I want in my halo halo. I'll be back here for some semi-regular shopping since I know there's more variety here now. Hopefully, my next trip is to take my picture as a lottery winner. LOL! read more
