Some kind of scam artist. Beware.
I hate to be someone who writes a bad review online, but i had to make a yelp account after attending a friend-of-a-friend's wedding at Hera's farm. I really really hope nobody else ever makes the mistake of having their wedding reception at this location. Keep in mind, i have no personal connection to either the wedding party or the venue.
so here's a story...
I arrived at Hera's farm for rehearsal the day before a wedding because i was driving some of the bridesmaids. Hera was very unhappy that a rehearsal was taking place, even though every wedding ever has such planning involved. it turned out to be a really good thing that some of us were there the day before because we discovered that nothing was set up yet, except for a tent and two porta-potties that were made available to guests at the wedding (bathrooms in the house were off limits. good thing there were only 60-ish people attending the wedding). the grass was cut, but clearly not regularly maintained which made for a buggy time. While the wedding party went through their short rehearsal up on the hill, others set up tables and chairs. the table in chairs were provided by an outside catering company. Hera was also pissed that the catering company dropped these off the day before the wedding. later, we discovered that the barn (which we were not allowed to decorate and was much smaller than described, as it was mostly filled with junk) was filthy. Hera didn't help out, but rather handed the bride a broom and told her to get to work. the bride's father, helping out, cut himself in the process of clearing the floor of rusty nails and had to go to the hospital. more preparations ensued later that day after i left. the wedding party was very polite and nobody complained to Hera or asked for any sort of accommodations.
On the day of the wedding the bridesmaids and groomsmen were allowed to get dressed up and ready in the house and, as far as i know, all went quite well. A few of the bridesmaids used some colorful language to describe Hera's behavior during this time, but i don't know enough to comment. perhaps someone will feel inclined to add to this in another review. The ceremony was just lovely and everyone couldn't be happier. the foothills of the Catskill mountains are so beautiful and are understandable a popular destination for weddings. I hope to return to the region sometime in the not-so-distant future.
During the dinner that followed the ceremony, which was organized by an awesome outside catering company, Hera came out to join us for food and drinks, clad in her daily farming attire. she took one of the groomsmen's place-settings. i was at another table, but heard from a fella sitting near her that she was talking a lot of crazy hippie talk. She stuck around for some more drinks thereafter as we made our way to the barn for dancing.
This is my favorite part- as we were leaving the reception, she made us take all of the trash/recycling with us back to our hotel.
members of the wedding party had to return the following morning to clean up.
so... the only thing that the farm contributed was the property itself, a tent, and two porta-potties. the cost? $2,500 and Hera's attendance during dinner/reception, which she attempted to increase to 4000 at the last minute.
true story.
apologies to the bride, groom, or family if you read this and think this sounds like your wedding. it was still a wonderful and magical evening that i will never forget and i am so happy to have been there. the venue really is great, but should prolly be more like $250 per night at most. read more
