Had an awesome first time eating experience. Got a frito pie and rib to share with my daughter and husband. There was a good balance of sweet and savory, the pickles were all laid out. My baby liked the beans and brisket which is saying something. Great service and food, and the water tastes filtered & refreshing. Mr henk even brought out some brisket on the house!! I thought it was just ok. I got the pulled pork plate. The pork was ok but better with bbq sauce on it. The beans were really bland. I thought they would be more of a baked beans taste. I put bbq sauce in it but it really didn't help. The potato salad was good as was the cole slaw. Husband had the ham bacon and cheese sandwich. He said it was really dry. Told him to put bbq sauce on it but he said didn't help. Oh well. The staff was super nice though. read more

I was actually headed for Coyote Bluff after going to the post office on Ross Street to get a package on its way faster but as it turned out that place was closed due to water problems from a water main breaking nearby. I looked on Yelp and discovered Henks wasn't that far away and it was one of the places I was wanting to try anyway. I don't get to this side of town that often since I'm staying over by Bell and I-40. The girl behind the counter was very nice. I ordered a Frito pie since I hadn't had one for a while and they had some cake that look good so I got that too. I asked the girl what kind it was and she said it was called hummingbird cake. I had to Google that to find out what it was but just as it looked like it was a spice cake with a lot of extra ingredients added in. The Frito Pie hit the spot. It came with a drink which was great because I was thirsty. I didn't end up eating the cake till the next day and it was delicious. If I get back to this side of town again I will definitely have to stop in and I recommend it to others. From what I understand from locals I have talked to, Henks has a long history with Amarillo BBQ places. Their reputation is well-deserved. read more

Went to this place hinks BBQ a little hole in the wall claiming to be some of the best barbecue. Not much to look at but I figured hole in the walls are usually always better. Paid almost $9 for this McDonald's cheeseburger version of barbecue. I see hot link sandwich so I figure should be a decent size, not the case! The only reason I gave it two stars was because the lady who served it was nice other than that the food was not the $8 and change that they charged me. The portions were very disappointing. Kind of hard to mess up hot links so I wasn't very impressed especially with the prices coming from California I expected better but ended up getting less. Now I don't know if it has anything to do with the price of meat but if these are what you guys served before that then people are up to be disappointed. I like to get places a second chance so I will try and see what else they have I just hope I'm not disappointed yet again. read more

I read another one star review on this place and thought it was harsh, even if the food wasn't very good. And then I tried it. The pulled pork and brisket both tasted like they were two weeks old. I took one bite of each and that was enough. The containers of beans were overflowing and broke through the bottom of the paper bag on to the concrete before I made it to the car. Unfortunately I had to throw what was left in the dumpster. Normally I would eat it regardless of the taste just so the food isn't wasted, but I was concerned that if I did I'd get sick. Maybe they had an off week. If you try it I hope you have a better experience than I did. read more

Mr Lyle Henk the Founder/Owner back in 1972 offered the REAL BBQ and excellent customer service. He would chop the brisket on a cutting board in front of you and his portions were colossal!!! Honestly this place doesn't deserve a single star rating.Today my son and I went the girl who took our order was wearing Jack Skellington pajamas and looked like she just walked off the Beetlejuice set. My son and I wanted a chopped beef sandwich plate which would normally include two sides and a drink....We were informed they pretty much had everything except potato salad because they made mashed potatoes instead. OK we ordered two chopped beef sandwiches and and bowl of beans which confused her when we ask for two bowls instead of one. I ask what is the difference in one bowl and two she responded "nothing really." We didn't order a drink because she informed us that the new owner was Old and he wouldn't buy them the supplies to run the business but they did have tea. The sandwich was terrible had no flavor and the beans were worse than the sandwich. The only flavor they had was the burnt taste from not enough water added to old beans from the day before. So if you plan on passing through Amarillo Texas and crave a BBQ sandwich and a bowl of beans google Tylers BBQ on Olsen Blvd they still serve real BBQ if they haven't sold out for the day. read more

Dropped in for some BBQ and was surprised to find a combo plate Wednesday special for less than $10. Got the chopped beef, thick slice of ham, and sausage with coleslaw, potato salad, beans, bread and a drink. Huge amount of food for dirt cheap. Not the best BBQ around by any means, but it's good and cheap if you hit the special. Quaint little place, couple of good ol boys dishing out the no-bullshit grub. Very disappointed... went because of Yelp reviews. We are Texan so we know good BBQ, my husband and son got ribs and did not eat them. Undercooked, tough and chewy. Had to order my son a sandwich and they didn't even acknowledge that we didn't eat the ribs. I got a chopped beef sandwich because they didn't have enough pulled pork to make a sandwich (the place was empty and it was a Saturday at 12:30). Chopped beef was OK at best and had to put a lot of sauce on it. Cole slaw was super dry. Overall it was an awful experience. Place is old and seemed dirty as well. If I could give 0 stars I would! There are lots of great BBQ options so go anywhere but here, wish we did!!! read more

Not impressive at all. I had the pulled pork sandwich with potato salad. The potato salad is homemade and it is ok if you add some pickles to it. The pulled pork was mixed in sauce and had very little texture of pulled pork it was more of a pork mash and had very little flavor. The sauce is sweet with a chili hint. It is also not impressive. They were sold out of the special but took no incentive to take it off the chalkboard after telling them that is what the special board states. read more

Came by this BBQ restaurant a few months ago for lunch, and the restaurant's kitchen was not functioning properly. A lady inside passed a Henk's BAR-B-QUE restaurant business card to the drive-thru window attendant to give to me. On the back of the card she wrote "Free Lunch Special." Told me she was sorry and to come back any time and use the card. Today I came by to get my free lunch special. The lady at the window informed me that "SHE" has been the manager for 2 yrs and she had never seen one of these cards and refused to honor the card. Personally, I above scamming local businesses out of a free lunch (guess the manager inside the restaurant is not since that is the first place her brain went). And, since the people inside don't trust the people outside, I don't think the the people outside the restaurant should necessarily trust the people inside the restaurant ... with their collective 'word's or the preparation of food. Now remember, initially I came to HENK's BAR-B-QUE restaurant to PURCHASE a meal, ... now having been as much as called a liar, I will not be coming here again, because if the mind set of the manager is that customers are trying to RIP HENK's off, I can only think that the converse is true ... This place was horrible!!!! The pinto beans were cold, the brisket was tough and cold. Not sure how they cook it but they keep it in a crockpot to serve out of. Nothing had any flavor whatsoever. Family of New Yorkers looking for some authentic Texan BBQ... This was the spot! It's a hole in the wall family owned place but I've found those are the yummiest and kindest places. Plus It's always good to support small family owned businesses! :) Full rack of ribs: meaty, extra large and fall off the bone type of good. The sauce was thick and flavorful. For a few adults eating we barley made a dent in the pile! Plenty of leftovers! ($26 ish) Frito pie: we ordered this purely out of entire curiosity... And we are glad we did! He even invited us to see the smoker in all it's glory and take pics! If we ever come through Amarillo again we will definitely come back!! The meat on the ribs was dry and old. The rub was so full of salt that each bite would burn the tastebuds. The BBQ sauce was mediocre. I had pinto beans that were under cooked and bland. Stopped to get a plate of BBQ yesterday since I have not eaten out since this Covid 19 stuff started because I am elderly and have some other problems and have been trying to be very careful not to get it. I could not go inside so went through drive-thru. I was shocked to see that the girl fixing my food was wearing only one glove and did not have on a face mask. Everyone is trying to fight this sickness with social distancing and masks but not her I guess. I hope she doesnt cough or sneeze on anyones food. I just moved back from Denver Co. and I was excited to eat here again. Many, many years ago I would eat there AWESOME frito pie. Well, I don't know what happened but EVERYTHING was GROSS !!!! i ordered the pulled pork platter through the drive thru window since I had my dog with me. The pork was so dry. There was little sauce except for the oily mess the pork had sat it. Even that was not enough to make the meat moist. It was so dry and tasteless. Salt did not even help. There was barely any bbq sauce. The bun was stale. I put some pulled pork on the bun and gave it to my dog, but after licking the meat, even she wouldn't eat it. The beans were watery and unappetizing.
