Hidden historic gem in Florissant! Established in 1873, this building operated as a grocery and general store until becoming a restaurant in 1994. We discovered this restaurant after car shopping at some dealerships on Lindbergh. The space offers both indoor and outdoor patio seating as well as a separate bar space. The restaurant's bones are noticeably historic and the décor choice is a mix of farmhouse and modern styles. Our server was very friendly and answered any questions we had and was also enthusiastic about our car-buying process, encouraging celebratory drinks. The food was delicious! American fare with a modern twist - Hendel's had lots of brunch and lunch options. I opted for the Salmon Power Bowl and it tasted extremely fresh and healthy. If Hendel's were a character, it would be Hagrid: enormous warmth, big portions, an old house you're glad exists, and not much interest in refinement. The building does a lot of the work here: an old place sitting in the middle of Old Town Florissant's residential blocks, with a bar, a dining room, a porch, and a patio we didn't get to use (next cool evening, we will). It's charming, and a real asset to that neighborhood. It is also loud. Old plaster, hard surfaces, not enough hung on the walls to absorb any of it. The old fashioned was solid, sweeter than I prefer. Appetizers were the low point: toasted ravioli thick and hard enough to qualify as gum scratchers (filling was fine), flatbread middle of the road. Then the kitchen found its footing. Parmesan-encrusted chicken won the table, with a nice rice-orzo pilaf and green beans that weren't overcooked. The Jameson whiskey burger came blue cheese, bacon, crispy onions, glaze, brioche, and ate dry (although ordered medium): too many rich flavors, nothing acidic to cut through them. Burnt ends mac and cheese was good and rich, but the brisket wasn't tender as I had hoped. We caught a night with only one dessert (a moist Lemon Sunshine cake that tasted like a Dreamsicle) and ice cream to put beside it. Christy took good care of us, efficiently and strictly by the book. 3.7 out of 5 stars Punch up the apps, and bring some balance to some of the entrees and this would bring up my rating to the low 4s. Bring the relatives who flinch at a menu. Acid somewhere on the plate, tender brisket, ice cream by the cake, and something soft on those walls would move this up quickly. read more

I'm from Little Rock, but met a longtime St Louis area resident for lunch here. I knew he would not disappoint me, because we've enjoyed several meals together over the last few years. Lunch at Hendel's was perfect for a business meal. Although it was busy during lunchtime, the waitress and the kitchen were prompt. My Cajun Carbonara was so good. A beautiful cozy house restaurant in a quaint part of town. Beautiful decor and makes you feel right at home. The cocktails are creative and creative. I had one of the seasonal cocktails, Social Butterfly. A refreshing gin drink with rosemary, ginger and cucumber. I got the Cajun Carbonara and it was delicious. The shrimp was cooked really well and was fresh - along with the addition of andouille sausage, this was a great white sauce Cajun dish that I would typically love. This is maybe my 3rd time sitting down at this restaurant. The only time there's not a wait when I go is during lunch or if I go to the bar. Expect a wait when you go around dinner time. The food is always good. I'm plant based and really enjoy the vegan burger. Thing is, EVERYBODY seems to love it as well because you almost always have to order it as soon as the place opens. They will run out which I've learned it's because they only have so much space? Idk but I wish something could be done about it given that these are GREAT VEGAN BURGERS. Me and my two youngest kids decided to try Hendel's for the first time since resturant suggestions on google maps told me it was only 7 minutes from my house! They definitely did not disappoint! From the moment our food came out, everything smelled amazing. I ordered the cheeseburger and fries with the spinach dip, and I absolutely loved the homemade chips that came with it. My kids got kids' meals and enjoyed their food as well. I also ordered a chicken Philly to-go for my son since it was his birthday, which made the visit even more special. Emma was our server, and she was very nice and attentive throughout our meal. I also loved that they have patio seating it's such a nice option, especially on a beautiful day even though we did not sit outside the patio seating we wanted was not open that night. I also liked how they had merchandise to buy while in the restaurant like tees, sweatshirts,bottles of wine . They also cook books for sale in their resturant by another shop we had recently been to called Made by Lia. That was definitely a nice community touch to show how close the area is to their companions! This overall experience was pretty meh, but previous visits have been much better. Staff as always was polite and gracious. This time we had two Jamison burgers, one with French Onion soup ,the other with fries, and Parmesan encrusted chicken with rice. The French Onion soup was outstanding! Nice broth and just the right amount of bread. Their take on french fries is having large potato wedges which were delicious. The chicken was excellent also. Moist and well seasoned. It's chicken - what else can I say about it. Both burgers were disappointing. They were not cooked to the requested doneness (and waitress didn't come by and check on us). Taste was decent and the bacon was crispy and tasty, but the blue cheese crumbles were minimal and not really impacting, and the onion straws were almost non existent. We really enjoy dining at Hendel's! The pasta dishes are always a favorite, especially the Cajun pasta, full of flavor and consistently delicious. The kids absolutely love the pasta dishes too, which makes it a great place for family meals. I also highly recommend the salmon power bowl with ancient grains and the salmon salad. This place consistently serves great food. Their prices are reasonable. The only issue is that they are too far away from my house! You should know that they don't take reservations, first come first served is their policy. I think you can get on a wait list. The restaurant is in an old house so it is very quaint. We sat on the enclosed front porch. It was nice temp despite the chilly weather due to heaters overhead. I had the grouper which was served with rice/risotto and broccoli. I've got family in the St Louis area and was visiting for vacation so, naturally, I went to Yelp to look for some well rated restaurants. This one caught my eye and I'm happy it did! At first look, you see a quaint, charming restaurant with a beautiful patio that wraps around the entire building, tucked away in an unsuspecting neighborhood. The interior is very welcoming and cozy. If I was judging a book by its cover, this one would have a pretty good judgment. The real judgement comes from the experience/service and food/drink for me. We were greeted by someone who looked to be the manager of the restaurant. She offered us our choice of low top or high top tables in two different rooms. We chosen the high top in the room with the bar. The room was dimly lit and pretty quiet/comfortable. Our server greeted us shortly after being seated and took our drink orders. My drink of choice was the Dark Cherry Old Fashioned (x2) and it was great! For appetizers, we ordered the Bacon Mac and Cheese Bites - it was not an easy choice as every appetizer looked really good. We were happy with our choice and I only wish we ordered more appetizers! For my entree, I was stuck between the Parmesan Encrusted Chicken and the Peas & Bacon so, I asked for the waitress's help. She suggested I do the Parmesan Encrusted Chicken and instead of the rice-orzo pilaf and veggies, do their white-cream farfalle and peas - this was a great choice. The Chicken comes encrusted in panko breadcrumbs, parmesan and mozzarella, topped off with bacon bits. The flavor profile was a rich, cheesy flavor paired perfectly with the bacon bits and chicken. The pasta was rich and cheesy as well and was a great combo with the peas. Our overall dining experience lasted approximately 60-90 minutes and was never dull. From great background 70s folk music, to the amazing food, this was a great experience from top to bottom. It sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood, so if you've visiting St. Louis, no, you're not lost! The parking lot is small, so you'll likely have to park on the street. Food was delicious! Home made chips to go with the spinach artichoke dip were perfectly crisp and dusted with parmesan. The club sandwich was so thick my husband had to partially deconstruct it, and the steak salad was perfectly cooked with heirloom grape tomatoes that were super sweet. Normally I wouldn't comment on the iced tea, but it was perfect. Not sour or perfumed (like Earl Grey), not too strong or watery. Delicious! Service was friendly and on point, which was awesome on a busy Friday evening. There was live music outside too, if you can tolerate the heat here in mid July. Let me start off by saying that Hendel's has the cutest and coziest aesthetic, especially for the holidays. The Christmas decor was amazing. The food? Not at all what I expected. I ordered the salmon plate. The only thing seasoned was the rice pilaf. The broccoli had no salt, pepper or butter. The salmon was dry and under seasoned as well. Ordered drinks, it took over 10 minutes to get and they were horrible. A raspberry lemon drop was just vodka with a splash of syrup in it. Thankfully our waitress took the drinks off due to the wait time and quality. I personally won't come back unless someone else pays and I will more than likely just stick with a salad. read more

Celebrated my mom's birthday at Hendel's and was genuinely impressed on my first dine-in visit. The ambiance is warm and charming, perfect for a special occasion, and the service was attentive from start to finish. They even surprised my mom with a complimentary slice of lemon cake, which was a sweet touch. We started with the spinach and artichoke dip and duck wontons. The dip could've been a bit thicker, but the wontons were flavorful and perfectly portioned. Complimentary bread is available upon request, which is nice to know. For entrées, we ordered the strip steak with mashed potatoes and green beans, the panko-crusted grouper, and a gyro sandwich. We were so full from the appetizers that we took most of the mains home, but everything was well prepared. The only small note was the gyro could've used a little more meat. The ambience, decor and patio are the stars of the show! The vibes make you feel like you're walking into grandma's house for a home cooked meal and she also happens to have a giant outdoor patio! The service is always incredibly friendly, whether it's a hostess, bartender or wait staff, they are always kind and attentive. The appetizers are killer, my favorite are the Mac n Cheese bites and the duck wontons. I also had a mushroom soup that just oozed funky fungal deliciousness! The entrees have been a little more hit and miss. The fish tacos were very dry, which is understandable with such small pieces of fish. The shrimp power bowl was also a little meek. Today was my first time visiting. I looked at reviews and saw high ratings for the cajun Carbonara so that's what I ordered. It was pretty good, tons of seafood, it had some spice to it but not heartburn level. I added some salt to it and it made it better. I ordered my food to go, it was ready when I arrived. I had to ask for plastic untensils and napkins bc it didn't come standard. The host gave them to me but mentioned i had to make note of that next time on my take out order. We chose Hendel's for an unplanned date night close to home. We joined the waitlist and were seated right away when we arrived. Our waiter was nice and provided us with good service. We didn't have to wait long for drinks or food. We both ordered from the seasonal cocktail menu. I tried the Big Glass of Yum which was perfectly named! I would definitely order it again. My husband tried If You Mix It They Will Come. He said it was pretty good but was expecting a little more based on the description. For an appetizer, we ordered the stuffed mushrooms. They were pretty good but I was thrown off by the taste of black licorice. Quick Google search revealed that that is what fennel tastes like. I'm not a fan of black licorice so I learned something new about fennel. I would have enjoyed them much more without the fennel as they had great flavor outside of that. For entrées, I had the Salmon Power bowl. It was my favorite. This is probably the best salmon I've had at a restaurant. Perfectly cooked, seasoned well, and moist! My husband had the Greek salad. I've only been to Hendel's a couple of times, but each visit reminds me how good it is. Tonight I tried the Salmon Power Bowl for the first time and it was absolutely fantastic -- fresh, flavorful, and perfectly portioned. My spouse gets the Battered Cod sandwich at least once per week for lunch-- it's hands-down his favorite. We also grabbed a Carrot Cake to go, and it was just as impressive as everything else. We went to Hendel's on a Saturday night. Pro tip: join the waitlist online. We were told that we would be 30 to 40 minutes, which we were fine with. The patio was packed, the inside was also busy. We were seated about 10 minutes after arriving in the bar area. The bar is super charming and reminds me of a coastal vibe. Our server, Ella, was awesome all night. Bartender Mike was great too. We started with spinach artichoke dip, and some custom cocktails. The chips are homemade for the dip, and the dip is amazing. Perfect amount of ingredients, not too much cheese, perfect for dipping. The menu is plentiful, with lots of different options. We had a hard time deciding, but we settled on the Parmesan encrusted chicken caesar salad and the chicken philly. Both were awesome. The chicken fillet was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a very long time. Everything was fresh, the fries were great, crispy on the outside, but chewy on the inside. This is just another 5-star review for Hendel's. Thanks, Yelp. What a wonderful find during our visit to the STL area! This is truly a neighborhood joint, and even though we were not regulars, we were rated like VIPs. Silly us we arrived for a late lunch on Valentine's Day and, surprise/not, they were beyond busy with a 90-minute wait. Lucky us we secured two seats at the bar and were able to enjoy a fantastic lunch. I have to mention the young woman bartender who was slammed busy but juggled drink and food orders like a Pro! I ordered the Dark Cherry Old Fashioned made with Bulleit Rye and the dark cherries were interesting, in a good way. Plus one ordered their version of a Paloma and remarked it is as good if not better than the Paloma at Liche's Cantina in Austin.
