They started doing a Butter chicken special on Fridays and honestly, its an amazingly good dish and for the price, it can't be matched. When I went there and I was greeted by nothing but big smiling faces and happiness - so nice to see! I had their chicken shawarma with rice special and although it could have been heated up more it was just excellent, and was a large portion. Guelph isn't exactly well known for it's ethnic food. Since moving here from Toronto, I've noticed a depressing lack of south asian and middle eastern food (two of my fav cuisines). I checked out this place with some coworkers on a whim, not expecting much due to my general experiene of ethnic food in Guelph (or lack thereof). I was SUPER excited when I heard the owner tell someone that the daily special today was Biryani. I grew up eating Biryani in Scarborough and it's a comfort food of mine. Not to mention it's (supposed to be) cheap, filling, and super flavourful when done right. My only other experience with Biryani in Guelph was from Diwa, and it was terrible. The Biryani was way overpriced, especially considering it was mostly flavourless. Helmand Kabab only serves Biryani on Wednesdays, because it isn't traditionally an Afghani dish. It's the owner's wife's recipe, and they make it once a week as a special. The biryani was much better than I expected. Granted, it was a more basic version of the dish, but it was definitely delicious enough to make me want to finish it in one sitting; there's definitely enough food for two meals. The price was reasonable ($10), the meal was satisfying, and the owner was extremely kind and helpful. I only give it four stars because my experience is limited to the biryani. But the biryani carries the weight of those 4 stars wonderfully. I would not be shy about saying this is definitely the best biryani available in the city! read more

When I first moved to Guelph, I asked my friends where the best schwarma was. I was immediately directed here. I had the Lamb the first time I came in, and it was the best lamb I've had from a place like this. The rice was the best, and the salad is super crisp. I had to check in now and rave about the Schwarma. It's probably the best I've had here so far. I had gone to Osmows the night before last, and it was terrible. This place does it fucking right. I also bought a couple of the tiny deserts they had. They're very sweet and delicious! I'll definitely be back here. 12/10 read more

I like Helmand Kabab a lot. The owner is super friendly and I love their meals and quality of food. I just can't get over the fact that they've gotten our order wrong consistently. When we dined in they corrected their mistake. The other times were takeout. I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt and trying different ordering methods (online, over the phone, etc) and they keep missing the details. For example, we like the salad dressing on the side or when they specify to ask for chicken or beef and they give us the one we did not want, and will write this on their online ordering platform but it is completely ignored. We've been loyal customers and enjoy their food so much, but I'm not sure I can keep going back if they blatantly ignore everything that we ask. Hoping their owner will read this review and understand that loyal customers are becoming frustrated that they have gotten our order wrong on several occasions now (like 5 times at least). read more

If you want something different and can handle some spice ( for most Canadian pallets ). I would recommend stopping by. If that doesn't float your boat they also make good pizza. If they have a daily special try it before you buy but I've always enjoyed them. read more
