Dr Helman seems like a wonderful human being - he seems to care deeply about helping people and is probably an excellent neurologist... I only saw him once, so far, ... BUT, I have to say (and this is the ONLY reason for the One Star review) - it has been HELL dealing with the office. From receiving an order for an MRI to scheduling / rescheduling - having to deal with stupid Klara (horrible app). The delays in processing my order has meant a delay in diagnosis and treatment. I hope Dr. Helman sees this review and takes action. UPDATE: After spending over an hour trying to get hold of the actual person who handles referrals/orders and finally hearing that she faxed the form to the imaging center yesterday, she faxed TO THE WRONG NUMBER! Very disappointing. Second bad encounter with this office. I had an appointment for 3:15. I got a text a few days ago reminding me of this, a voicemail, and a second text. I made this appointment about 6 weeks ago. I am a teacher and leaving work early is hard but I needed to be seen. I arrived at 3:15. I was rudely told the doctor left because they have a 10 minute waiting policy. I showed her my appointment reminders they sent. Nowhere did it say my appointment was for earlier than 3:15 or that I should arrive earlier. I have been here before and they already have all my info. Also, very odd that he had already left the building and now coincidentally had an appointment for tomorrow at 2:30. I feel taken advantage of. read more

Dr, Helman is an excellent doctor, after seeing several Neurologist's he was the only one who prescribed medication to control my seizures that I have had after having a stroke. I love his personality, he is easy to talk to, he listens to you and he explains ever thing to you. He saved my life and I am greatful to have him as my doctor, and the office staff are really great. Dr. Helman saved my life. As an epileptic, my life was miserable until I met him. My previous doctors had the attitudes of "take two of these and call me in the morning". Dr. Helman made me cry on the first day I met him. He told me that if he couldn't help me, he'd send me up to Stanford. After two years, he sadly told me that he had tried everything he could, and that he was ready to send me up there. Again, I cried out the door. These were all happy tears, of course, as no one else would go that far to help me. My experiences at Stanford Hospital were tremendous, ending with a successful surgery, implanting a chip that reacts to my seizures and does what it can to prevent them. Incredibly disappointed with Dr. Helman. I saw him 2.5 years ago for a serious symptom. I was brushed off and told nothing was wrong. Only to find out, he documented a "sciatica" problem which turned out to be a huge issue when applying for a new life insurance policy. Come to find out, I have a debilitating condition that will eventually put me in a wheelchair. He should have tried to rule this out to begin with and I should have been put on preventative medication ASAP! I have permanent nerve damage that could have had a chance to be prevented. read more

Best neurologist in the county. He is helpful, courteous, and doesn't keep you waiting. Don't pass him up. He's truly the best.

If I could give a zero-star rating, I would. Dr. Helman's office waited until less than an hour before my appointment to call and cancel, with the caller stating that "Dr. Helman does not treat [my] diagnosis." That's very interesting, especially that a) the diagnosis has apparently been decided before I was ever seen, and b) I made sure to confirm while making my appointment that the practice does in fact treat the suspected condition given my reported symptoms. It may not have been the doctor himself, but his terrible-excuse-of-a-medical-practice made a mistake that wasted nearly a month of my time while waiting to be seen by another practitioner. That is rude and inconsiderate at best, and may have jeopardized my health at worst. And if you think I'm being a little harsh, remember that a patient calling with less than an hour's notice to cancel his or her appointment wouldn't get a one-star patient rating--they'd get charged actual money for not showing up. Well I can't really charge Dr. Helman's office for being discourteous, but I can at least make public my utter disappointment in his practice standards. read more

If you can avoid seeing Dr. Helman, I highly recommend it. He has a great "bedside" manner but does not follow through with his promises. It was a waist of 6 months plus of phone calls and empty promises until I went to another neurologist who followed thru promptly. I would often get excited by receiving a call from the office only to find it was a robocall. I wanted to believe he was legit believing him when he said he cares.... I think he has intends to care and be the doctor he presumably was...but he is very resigned and has no follow thru. save yourself some time and just go to another one. read more

I just received a lengthy, very aggressive from this office, which among other things threatened to send me to a collection agency several times. I have no idea who this is, not only have I never been to him but I've never been to any neurologist anywhere for any reason! I tried to call back at the number left on the message, the line was busy. I looked up another number for this office, that line is also busy. If I went to this doctor, I'd change, based on this awful message. These people really need to find out what they are doing and clean up their act! read more

This office is incompetent. I have received multiple (so far 5) threatening phone call with a collections message. I have NEVER been to Dr. Dale Helman's practice. After the first call, I called them, busy, busy, busy, on and on and 1/2 hour later got through. I asked how they got my name on their patient list, they said I was referred in 2017. This was a referral that their office never bothered processing and did not call me to set up an appointment. During the call about the threatening message, the person did not indicate they would continue. They continued every morning just after 9am for the next 4 days, including the weekend! When calling back today, which took over 40 minutes to get through (was put on hold and then dropped once), I only got out that I had been receiving phone calls and cut me off and said they would end tomorrow. She would not answer me if that meant that I would receive them again tomorrow or not and she hung up. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! Definitely would not go there now, EVER! read more

Dr. Dale Helman has been an amazing doctor as I am recovering from 55+ head on collision, aside from broken bones and the overall trauma which includes having epilepsy as a result. Original Review (posted 04/20/2019): I had an initial consult with Dr. Helman for episodes of syncope. The appointment was about 20 minutes long. Of that time, Dr. Helman spent a good 15 minutes talking about himself. I learned more about his history and personal life than he did about my medical condition. I know his family heritage, his father's former occupation and title, his SAT score, his career trajectory (and the 3 times the military was recruiting him), his vision after lasik surgery (20/12 and 20/10), his son's birthday, the story of his son's birth, and at least a dozen other facts that had nothing to do with my treatment or care. When asked about my recent episodes and medical history, he became visibly disinterested after I described an episode that occurred several years ago. He did not let me finish telling him about my medical history. Then, he did a quick 1-2 minute assessment of my reflexes and sensation responses and concluded that I did not have a neurologic disorder. But, he suggested I have a test scheduled to diagnosis epilepsy even though he was "99% sure you do not have epilepsy". This is what is wrong with America's healthcare system. People like Dr. Helman are billing for 20 minute consultations when the patient is given less than 5 minutes to address their medical concerns. Doctors are sending patients for time-consuming and unnecessary tests that either the insurance company or the patient ends up paying for. I don't even want to know what my explanation of benefits statement from my insurance is going to look like. If I seek another referral for neurology, it will NOT be at this office. Update (07/05/2019): I received my EOB from the insurance company. My insurance provider was charged $425 for this "consultation" and paid a lower, allowed amount. What a scam. read more

Horrible horrible service! I was referred to Dr. Hellman through my insurance. Had to wait 2 months for my first appointment just to have it cancelled on the day of. Then I couldn't make another appointment for another month, now three months after first referral, to have my appointment cancelled again on the day of! My best friend's experience with Dr. Helman's staff, Carlos, in particular has been atrocious. Having been present via speakerphone for several calls, I can attest that Carlos' attitude towards (not) handling patient referrals is arrogant, callous, indifferent, and earned Dr. Helman's practice this one star rating. My friend suffers every day with incredible pain while waiting for a referral for neurosurgery, and Carlos has ignored their requests for more information, because he "already sent everything", and "shouldn't need to send anything else", while simultaneously noting that they are about to close her case due to lack of requested clarification. He fails to respond to patient requests also, stating that he will call to advise her of any developments, but never doing so. Dr. Helman is friendly and probably skilled, but Carlos kept this patient in a living hell each day for months. He should not be employed anywhere in the healthcare industry where competence and compassion are absolutely necessary. read more

Dr. Helman is the ONLY neurologist who was actually able to help my elderly mother's memory. Dr. Helman treated my mother with as much care and concern as if she had been his own mother. My mother actually loved Dr. Helman because he didn't give up, he kept on trying until he was successful. Mom was aware that her memory had improved and she was aware that Dr. Helman was responsible for the improvement. Having come from Los Angeles where there are fabulous doctors at UCLA, USC, Cedars Sinai, Saint John's (Santa Monica), etc. I am NOT all that impressed with many of the doctors on the Monterey Peninsula. The notable exception is Dr. Helman. I am very impressed with Dr. Helman. I have posted numerous reviews for numerous doctors who had my elderly parents as patients, Dr. Helman is the ONLY one that I gave five (5) stars. Dr. Helman is the GOLD standard. read more

I really liked Dr. Helman, he was very friendly, answered all my questions and was very straightforward.

I not sure what's going on at this office, but make very sure if you go there that you ask what EVERYTHING costs up front. I went to the office to see Dr. Helman. My husband is a physician and has worked with Dr. Helman before. While at the office Dr. Helman suggested that he do a little 2 minute test. All he did was touch four or five places on each leg and arm with a small probe. It took less than two minutes and took place right there in his office. He never told me that there would be any extra charge for that procedure. When we got the bill we thought it must be a mistake as it was 5000.00 dollars above the office visit!!! My husband wrote to the Dr. because often the Dr. is unaware of what's being charged.... (Although I believe when you're in private practice you should be aware of what your patients are being charged...) We never got a response from the Dr. or the office! The billing office just called and said you owe the full amount, pay us now! To be fair, we do not know if the doctor ever got the letter, but I sure hope he's a better Dr. than a business man... Dr. Helman may be a fine neurologist but his office staff is the worst. Referrals were to be made but the gal who was to do it went on vacation and did nothing. For two weeks we called the office daily and the staff made excuses and give us the run around . We asked for a return call from Dr. Helman and were assured he'd be calling back. I don't know if the messages were not relayed but a return call was not received. Finally we contacted the office manager, got the referral within an hour, to the wrong Dr. A week later we received a call from the office staff that we'd been referred to Dr. Helman and wanted to set up a new patient visit. Like I said he may be a fine doctor but his office staff needs a major shake up, whether he is aware of their bad practices or not he's where the buck stops. We won't be going back. I really think Dr. Helman himself is a very pleasant and professional individual. But his staff is the worst ever staff I have ever seen in my life. They are extremely extremely extremely careless while it comes to sending prescriptions to pharmacies and referral and all that. I can not believe how many times I called the office and asked them to send my prescription, I almost cried over the phone, but they were all indifferent, no body took care of me... I simply can not tell in words how much careless and ignorant the staff is... He has a wonderful sense of humor and immediately calmed us with this charming demeanor. He was highly professional, ordered some tests and we came away grateful to be in his skilled and competent care. I am disgusted by the staff at Dr. Helmans office. The most unorganized, inconsiderate and worst of all - unsympathetic - group of people I have ever come across. If your seeing a neurologist there is obviously something going on. The LAST thing a patient needs to worry about is whether the staff is correctly doing their job. From inadequacies and errors in the simple processes of scheduling appointments, returning calls and most importantly correctly processing referrals. A referral process that takes minutes, turned into over a month of mistakes, incorrect referrals, lost files, and blatant rude behavior by more than 4 employees, including the office manager. I have lost more than 6 weeks waiting for these people to do their job correctly - 6 weeks that I needed medical care from someone! Finally, I went to a new doc and within 24 hours had a processed referral and appt with the correct doctor. Dr. Helman is great, but his untrained, inefficient, unreliable and inconsiderate staff is a total deal breaker. Unless he guts the office and brings in all new staff, I suggest you steer clear of this practice. These folks should all be looking for new jobs outside of the clerical medical field.
