I cannot recommend Dr. Akers enough. From the very first appointment, it was clear that she is not only extremely knowledgeable but also deeply compassionate. She takes the time to listen carefully, explains everything in a way that's easy to understand, and never makes you feel rushed. What impressed me most is how thorough she is--she looks at the whole picture rather than just one symptom. Her approach made me feel confident that I was in the best possible hands. She balances professionalism with warmth, which is rare and so appreciated, especially when dealing with something as important as neurological health. I also want to mention Nurse Chris, who is absolutely amazing--kind, attentive, and always quick to follow up. I went to Doctor Akers years ago and I still think about how she changed my life with migraines. Dr. Akers is the best doctor I've ever seen. She takes the time to listen to me and explains things in a clear, understandable manner. She is extremely responsive - when I send her messages through My Health Online, she responds within hours, sometimes even minutes. DR. Akers really cares about getting you well.

I was experiencing headaches, so my internist, Dr. Andrew Diamond, referred me to Dr. Akers. Dr. Diamond told me that in his experience, she did very thorough work-ups. Dr. Akers is a neurologist, and by the fact that they had special forms to fill out regarding headaches, and by what she said in her consultation with me, it was clear that she has a lot of experience with headaches. Dr. Akers was on time, and took an extensive history in her office. She has an incredibly calm demeanor and a very sweet voice that would put you at ease in a stressful situation. (Actually, come to think of it, I don't care how sweet sounding someone's voice is, if that voice tells you that you have a brain tumor, you're going to freak out worse than Woody Allen in Hannah and her Sisters.) Later, she did a very thorough examination and ordered an MRI. She called me the very next day to tell me that she got the MRI and that everything was normal, so she's very good with following up. She was clearly extremely, extremely knowledgeable about different headache conditions, while acknowledging that the medical community doesn't always know what causes them. Off the top of her head, she listed a few conditions that could fit my symptoms, some of which I found out were very rare through my own internet research. She's clearly very sharp. For those who care about such things, she did go to Harvard Medical School. (I'm an attorney, and in the legal community, where you went to law school generally says nothing about your abilities, so I say it for what it's worth.) Ultimately, my headaches just went away. It was probably stress related (something that Dr. Akers suggested was a possibility), so I can't credit Dr. Akers for saving my life or anything. But I would definitely recommend her if you have headaches or need a good neurologist. Her office is part of the Blue Cross PPO network. read more

I started to go to Dr. Akers about 3 or 4 years ago since I suffer from migraines. She has been nothing but wonderful. It turns out that I was being given a child's size dose of migraine medicine from previous general practitioners I had been going to. Once we got the dosage right, this helped with immediate relief. I still see her to maintain control over the migraines and she is so thorough and caring. Always positive, always takes the time to answer and questions you may have, and always solution oriented. I couldn't ask for a better person to see. She's helped me relieve my migraines, and it's so nice to know that she really cares about her patients and their well being. I absolutely adore Dr. Akers. It was recommended that I see a neurologist based on issues I have with headaches (migraine and tension) which are related to hormones and a severe case of bruxism (a TMS type disorder). Dr. Akers really asked insightful questions, made me realize some things I had not even considered connected to my issues and gave me suggestions for other doctors that could assist me with my bruxism issues. She prescribed a medication for me that has so changed my life regarding the bruxism. I have gone from being in pain 24/7 to having negligible pain! Obviously I don't want to take meds everyday for the rest of my life. But to be able to minimize the agonizing pain I've been suffering from so quickly is a dream. She's just a lovely doctor, who really knows her stuff, has a killer staff that clearly adores working with her and everyone makes you feel right at home. I've already recommended her to several of my doctors because she's just too awesome to keep to myself. read more

Amy has been treating my multiple sclerosis (MS) for almost four years. I was referred to her by my PCP after I fired my first neurologist. I was a little nervous at first, because I didn't know what to expect from her. I hoped I wouldn't encounter another arrogant doctor who didn't listen to his/her patients' problems and shuffle the patient out the door in 10 minutes. Thankfully, Amy was the opposite of my first experience! Not only does she conduct thorough exams, but she also takes as much time as needed to discuss the exam results and put together a treatment plan. Most importantly, she listens! She is calm, compassionate, humble and easy to talk to. I had no idea she graduated from Harvard Medical School until I looked up her educational background on California Pacific Medical Center's website! When Amy first started treating me, she started me on one of the mainstream MS medications. My MS continued to progress at a rapid rate. I was having exacerbations every 4-6 weeks. She was greatly concerned and suggested I try another new IV medication. I trusted her and gave my approval. I started on the new drug and remained exacerbation-free during the duration I was on it. She literally saved my life! I remember her telling me if I was her sister, she would want me to do it. I'm on a new medication today, one that has less serious side effects than the IV medication. I've been on it for more than a year. In May '09 I scheduled an appointment with Amy and asked her to put me on this oral medication. She listened, giving me her pros and cons, but ultimately let me make the decision. I have never had a doctor show such compassion and knowledge (by the way, she knows EVERYTHING), while still giving me the autonomy to make the final decision. She stands behind me 100%. I just saw her today for a follow-up appointment. She is pleased with my progress and admits the "Sherri treatment plan" is working well for me. :) I would highly recommend Amy to anyone looking for a good neurologist. Amy Akers saved my life. I had symptoms that one primary doctor refused to hear and two other doctors (another primary doctor and obstetrician) missed. I was very alarmed by symptoms i was having - numbness and tingling in both hands and both feet at the same time and gait disturbances - and i worked very hard to get into see a neurologist asap. Thank goodness she had an opening! She spoke to me in her office, took my history, did a physical exam and then calmly told me that she was admitting me to the hospital immediately. I had a spinal tap, which along with my history, confirmed her diagnosis - guillain barre syndrome. I thought she might be right, but I was shocked and afraid when she was ACTUALLY right, as this syndrome acts aggressively. She caught it very, very early and so my treatment was 'easier' and debility was far less than most people with guillain-barre have to endure; my prognosis is great. Another week or two of waiting for doctors to listen and put 2-and-2 together and I would have ended up on a ventilator and in the icu for many months. Knowing this, I can say that she saved my ass in a BIG way. She has a great bedside manner and visited me every day in the hospital, where she checked to make sure that my condition wasn't progressing and gave my family and i, quite definitively, her positive thoughts on my prognosis. It was reassuring and comforting. LSS, Dr. Akers has a special place in my heart and I will be forever grateful. read more

I started seeing her about 2 years ago and have only needed to go twice, but I would gladly see her more. I saw Dr. Akers recently for a very serious, sudden-onset condition of total paralysis in one of my wrists. She treated me over the course of approximately two months until the problem resolved. Dr. Akers was referred to me by a friend but I did my homework. Her academic credentials are stellar. When trusting your health with someone in a time of crisis, you really want someone as intelligent and well-trained as possible. Her care was impeccable. She ran every conceivable test, called me immediately to follow up, referred me to a physical therapist and cautioned me that it was important that I see a hand specialist. As I now know, the neurology of the hand is incredibly complex and the PTs who work on hands have extensive specialized training in that area. My hand is now in perfect working order. Her bedside manner is great. She explained anything and everything to me and did not sugar coat it. It wasn't clear how much mobility I would regain in my hand. She spent all the time I needed. Most importantly, it was clear that she cares deeply about her patients. By the way, I'm a woman and I would say that the rambling reviewer who suggested she was not taken seriously by Dr. Akers, in part, because she's a woman might want to seek assistance from a physician in a different field that also deals with the brain. read more

I had to write an update, because I still cannot believe that Amy has 5 stars from others. It's been a couple of years since I saw Amy and I'm feeling great. So happy that I did not follow her protocol and taken medication. Turned out to be a food allergy that is easy to avoid. I'm hoping that people second guess her recommendations before following her blindly. I would highly recommend 'Allergy Detective' iPhone app or the Quantified Self meetups, where you can learn great stuff on how to investigate yourself and how your body, mind, emotions react to external factors. I have called Ms. Akers 4 times and never received a call back. You call yourself a Neurologist? I think not.

Dr. Akers is very thorough and seems to be really up to date on her specialty. She always calls me herself with my tests results, has given me good referrals to doctors in other specialties, and even suggested I get a second opinion on my condition. Having a neurological issue can be scary, but Dr. Akers is a great physician to work with. I highly recommend her. My only complaint is at times it is difficult to get through to the front desk staff to schedule an appointment. But it is a minor inconvenience and worth it to ensure I have a physician I trust. read more

What a wonderful doctor!!! I'm so lucky I was referred to Dr. Akers. I was blindsided by a complicated migraine that landed me in the hospital twice due to unknown complications. I never got in to see Dr. Akers, despite a four page referral from my doctor and having blacked out while driving. Her front office is truly worthless and unhelpful. I had to call back several times, getting a different person each time. Finally I was told that I couldn't be seen before three weeks and that was it. No call to let me know that, although I asked for a call back the first day. Then when I asked for the referral to be faxed to other neurologists I got that blank kind of, well, OK . . . response that indicated to me it wasn't going to happen. Back to square one with my primary. Apparently you have to have blood gushing out your ears to get noticed at PAMF. read more

I am actually rather disappionted. I never got to see Dr. Akers because her receptionist was so rude and condescending i chose to opt out of an apt Not only did the woman on the phone give me attitude but she also failed to tell me that the wait timefor an apt was a month and a half until after i had collected all of my medical records and had them faxed to her just like she asked. She even made rude comments about my spine surgeon who faxed her what she asked for. I am sure that Dr. Akers is a very nice woman and a great doctor but thats only if you are willing to put up with her demeaning receptionist and willing to apparently wait a month and a half for an apt. I am 22 years old and I have seen over 12 specialists for my chronic severe low back pain and no one has ever treated me with this much attitude and disrespect. Word to Dr. Akers, get a receptionist who actually wants to work and likes people. I wish I could have been seen by her because I hear she is the best. read more

A few years ago, while driving, i noticed that I sometimes had to remind myself of where I was going and concentrated on the route. I thought this was something I hadn't needed to do before but was not concerned. At the same time my daughter had begun to question my memory but I thought that what I was experiencing normal forgetting. To satisfy her, I looked in the phone book and found Dr. Akers. I made an appoinment and took my daughter with me. To my surprise, after a few questione, Dr. Akers tested me and concluded I had a memory impairment. She prescribed medication, which i have been taking since. It took some time but the memory improvement I experienced on the medication showed clearly that my memory had been impaired. I feel like I dodged a bullet and if it weren't for my daughter's concern, I might be in dimentia by now. Besides Dr. Aker's knowledgeable competence, she updates her medication provider information and saves me money. In regard to a previous posting about her office staff, I experienced a misunderstanding recently with regard to a request of mine. I left a message, my call was returned ASAP and the misunderstanding was corrected. Recently I referred a friend of mine with a history of migraines and she was delighted, saying Dr. Akers was the most knowledgable neurologist she had seen. read more

Dr. Akers is a wonderful doctor. She's very warm and takes a lot of time to make sure you get your questions answered. I saw her for chronic headaches and she prescribed a drug that worked great. Amy Akers is amazing. She is so knowledgeable. I went to her because I was diagnosed with 'parkinsonism'. It is a complicated case with 5 years of history littered with incorrect diagnoses from multiple sorosis, brain infections, autoimmune infections, and eventually parkinsonism. She spent 90 minutes with me (if not more) and took my reams of paperwork home on the weekend to review. Much to my surprise, I got a callback on Monday. She told me that my signs were more evident of parkinsons and got me to see two movement disorder experts at UCSF and Stanford. I now see a Parkinson's expert at UCSF and Amy Akers, alternating every 3 months. So given I am able to keep a comparison going, I find Dr. Akers very knowledgeable of movement disorder diseases. She prescribes the correct medication which is tough and variable for parkinson's. She has her own opinions which I greatly respect yet readily agrees with and supports UCSF if they are heading in the right direction. I continue to see her because I want a more broad-based neurologist to continue to monitor my brain activity versus looking through the binoculars of a specialist. I also find her much more accessible and definitely more interested in how I'm doing. She is wonderful and I couldn't recommend her more! read more

It sounds like the other reviewers found that Dr. Akers was great at diagnosing headaches and stress. I also see that she must have learned from her mistakes made with me and was able to correctly diagnose one of the recent reviewers with MS. At the time that I was experiencing problems, I was treated in a very condescending manner. Additionally, her materials (DVD and booklets on Avonex - a drug therapy for MS) were out-of date. Although she may excel in diagnosing and treating other neurological conditions, I will reiterate that she did an extremely poor job in diagnosing and treating my MS. read more

Having bounced around between what feels like a million doctors Dr Akers has to be the most thorough, compassionate and knowledgeable doctors i have seen. I have a history of both Parkinson's and MS in my family and have been having a range of symptoms that quite clearly had me extremely worried. I have been seeing Dr Akers for all these issues for the past 3 years and she has been fantastic. Very attentive to my needs, exemplary in her diagnosis and attention to detail and very through in answering all my questions. Thankfully I have been cleared of anything severe so far but without Dr Akers I think i would have been far more of a basket case than i already am. Her waitlist is pretty long (I waited over 2 months for my last appointment) but trust me you will not be disappointed - having been to a number of doctors who either just want to get me in and out in under 10 minutes or are intent on pinning something on me without really listening - trust me you are better off waiting - she is as good as it gets. read more

A week ago was my second semiannual visit with her; she took over for my former nueurologist, Dr. Telfer who retired last August & I have epilepsy that is well controlled on the second lowest dose of Tegritol & I am fortunate to have Dr. Akers. she is wonderful. She is kind, carring, knowlegable, gentle, honest, & always calls after blood work which I think is definitely a personal touch now a days as other doctors do not take the time. She spends as much time as needed, leaving nothing to chance. The assistants: Maria, Gerald, & the other, who's name I cannot remember are wonderful as are Jennifer & Sandy at the front desk who are origiinally from Dr. Telfer's former private practice, thorough, kind, & everything matching the qualities of Dr. Akers. Even one of the assistants offered to walk me down to the lab fgoEven the nurse takinng the calls is wonderful. So, for excellent neurological care, Dr. Akers & her staff cannot . be beat.
