My daughter and I both needed new glasses so we called Helm Vision Group and asked if they took our insurance. The receptionist took our information, called me back, and informed me that they did take my insurance. Great! Made an appointment for both of us and went in to have our eye exams done today Only after both our exams were completed did they inform us that their office did NOT take our insurance for the actual glasses, and that the full cost would be out of pocket for us. Maybe they should have informed us about this 1) when I first called to inquire about insurance, 2) when we arrived at their office and showed our insurance card, 3) BEFORE the exam is done. It is NOT okay to inform a patient that you accept their insurance, have a full exam performed, and THEN send them to your "optical" department just to be told we'd have to pay full cost. What a waste of our time, your office is so huge with so many patients, I was led in and out of an exam room 8 times for a basic eye exam, same with my daughter, it was impersonal, their ONLY objective is to get as many patients in and out of their office as possible. Great service. Dr Guan was awesome she explained what she was doing & answered all my questions. I met Alan who did a great job assisting me in choosing a frame. Horrible! Lisa Guan misdiagnosed by a long shot - she diagnosed retinitis pigmentosa when it was really ARMD. The specialist found that laughable, said she's probably new. I didn't find it laughable. Don't get me started on the optometry service. That was lousy too. They have however improved the wait after your appointment time from 2+ hours to only 20 minutes. Lisa also got my husband's prescription totally wrong and had to be redone completely. Very bad experience with that office. read more

I went in for an eye exam and it was an efficient and nice experience. One thing that frustrated me is that I paid in full same day and received a bill months later for $20 threatening to send to collections. They should be able to determine my out of pocket charges on the spot so I'm not asked to send credit card info in the mail for a $20 error they made. read more

First, he has been seeing Dr. John Fitzgerald for several years now and Dr. Fitzgerald has been by far the most knowledgeable and helpful of any optometrist or ophthalmologist that my boyfriend has seen. He explains things clearly and goes the extra mile to deliver the best results for patients. Second, my boyfriend needed assistance with a billing issue, and Nonette from the billing team worked with him closely to ensure that it was resolved. She had to coordinate with multiple different parties but was consistent in keeping my boyfriend updated on progress and addressing any questions or concerns that he had. This place is very very professional and thorough in their eye exams. They took my insurance and provided me with my much needed eye exam. They do however, buckle and dime for everything. I was charged $200 just to be "fitted" for contact lenses. Never in the past has any other physician provided this service and charged so much. After my insurance plan was applied, I paid over $400 for an exam, contact fitting and new glasses and frames. Upon my return to order contact lenses, I was going to be charged over $500 for a six month supply of contact lenses. Needless to say, I'm not wealthy and walked out with just my glasses. I'm new to SCV and I'll just drive the 40 miles back to Simi Valley to my old doctor who doesn't price gouge. I can't believe a year supply of vision correction was going to cost me $1,400.00 out of pocket. If you're on a budget and need both glasses and contacts, do not come here. Great staff/service, and open on Saturdays! I have been happy with my experience at Helm Vision Group. I don't have a schedule that allows me to go to the eye doctor's office during the week, so it's fantastic being able to schedule appointments for Saturdays. Taylor at the optical desk has been so helpful. I have spoken with her on the phone a few times, and she is always happy to listen to my questions and give me detailed answers. She even returned my call when I left a voicemail. Lots of places say they will return your call but don't ... but Taylor followed through! The first person I typically see when I walk in is Maggie at the front desk. She is always so kind, helpful, and just nice to talk to. She even remembered very specific details about my life that I had mentioned five months earlier! That's how you know someone is really listening and paying attention! The Skyline location is amazing. Not only are we fans of Dr Fitzgerald, but Julie in the optical department is truly amazing. I've never encountered a better technician, in all of the 30+ years of wearing glasses. I came in this afternoon after having accidentally stepped in my glasses. Theses Lucky Brand frames hadn't broken but the metal hinges had been bent. I was fairly certain I would either need a whole new pair or at least new parts and potentially weeks without my glasses, which I wear 99% of my awake hours. Well Julie said, let me see what I can do. Less than 30 minutes later I was walking out with what felt like brand new glasses. I nearly cried with joy. Then when I asked her how much I owed... get this, she said, nothing. GOD BLESS JULIE and her willingness to do what's best for the customer. read more

It's now been almost 2 years since this procedure was done. My eye has become allergic to make-up, so I can't even wear make-up anymore. It still gets really dry at night and I have to apply drops in my eye every three hours at night. It has destroyed my sleep. The skin around my eye gets swollen. My eye looks smaller than the other eye. It's incredible that doctors are so negligent and get away with such horrible service. I'm sure that the only reason why he insisted on doing the surgery to remove the stye was to bill the insurance for the procedure. For him to receive another few hundred dollars, now I have to live with this eye problem for the rest of my life. Other doctors have told me that it would have been best to not do any incision and wait for the stye to go away on its own. It was already getting better, and I told the doctor. However, he insisted on doing the surgery. Moral of the story: DO NOT TRUST doctors. They are after one thing only: Money. read more

Dr Helm and Dr Gross are both high end, professional opthamologists. Their office staff are friendly and Dr Gross has a great demeanor. They are very thorough and are interested in taking excellent care of the patients' health. I read the other review complaining about the 1 yr prescription.. However this is no different than a medical doctor not writing an endless Rx for a blood pressure medication without a re-check.. Things change. It would be irresponsible to hand out a copy of the prescription without an updated test. It makes sense to me. Check the office out if you have vision care needs. You won't be sorry. read more

I had shingles and it affected my vision. I had various test performed by a neurologist since they couldn't detect what was causing my vision to be double. After them eliminating any Neuro issues I went to see dr Helm and he told me after testing my eye that I had what is called 4th cranial optic nerve damage, and it would be temporary. He provided a lens that helped balance my vision. Within a month my vision came back. I wish I had gone to him first, I would not have had to go through all the invasive testing from the neurologist. Since then Helm's is the only place I will go for my eye care. He is the best as is his other staff members. read more

Much of the staff and patients do not mask; the waiting areas are crowded (always long waits at this office). When I asked about it, they said they just don't. "We don't mask here." Let me just start off by saying I've worked many years in customer service and dealing with the general public. I was recommended to Helm because I was having issues related to my eyelids. I was scheduled to see Dr. Helm for a test to see if I was a candidate for eyelid surgery. The week before I get a message from Maggie (surgery coordinator) that Dr. Gross will be doing my consult for recommendation rather than Helm. I see Dr Gross he adamantly declares "you are an ideal candidate for surgery" he does a few tests and tells me the front desk will schedule my surgery. Ok-I go to front get my surgery scheduled and ask is there any pre-op or special instructions? I am told no just show up . Turns out I need to change my surgery day. I call and get transferred to Maggie and I ask for a change in dates for surgery to the following week. I am told they cannot do the surgery until I get some other tests. I respond ,"I confused, I had the testing and got a recommendation from Dr Gross." She repeats the same thing she said with a little attitude-I ask "well how many times do I have to come in and why would my surgery be schedule if I needed more testing. She then immediately goes in defensive mode and tells me "you can pay privately!" Why would I want to do that, I'm just trying to understand so I can inform my employer of time off. As I kept asking why didn't anyone tell me this, when I asked. Why would the doctor say he recommended surgery and that I'm an ideal candidate. A little agitated she repeated I can pay privately. She then tells me she has an appointment the next day. I go in to get peripheral testing -I am told to open my eyes as much as I can. The techs were friendly-no issue there...they send me to the front desk to talk to Maggie...she doesn't greet me in any way..just takes my paper and tells me insurance will not cover my surgery...what do you mean? She continues with her curt attitude and after asking several questions mostly about what I could do now since it was causing headaches ...she shrugs and again says you can pay privately. I said but it's causing a medical issue for me what can I do to appeal this? she literally says " you can't the insurance goes by this test only...you can pay privately." This goes on for a few more minutes and I ask , is it you that aren't recommending surgery? She responds yes...I ask so that's it ? There's nothing I can do to help with headaches? She responds you can pay privately. 1) This person should go to customer service training 2) research your stuff..there is always a way to appeal or pursue things if the patient is medically impacted... 3) fake it till you make it! At least pretend you care... Everyone else was friendly-when you work in the front and it literally takes an extra few seconds to greet customers or even apologize if you forgot to schedule a test just OWN IT! People make mistakes, but don't cop an attitude and get into defense mode... 4) if you can't be kind and customer oriented find another position.! read more
