I ended up having to go to Henry Mayo ER with eye pain and redness. The nurse practitioner there was phenomenal and ended up consulting with Dr Helm, who in a stunning act of selflessness, agreed to see me on a Sunday, over a HOLIDAY WEEKEND. I was absolutely FLOORED!! Needless to say, he showed up for the appointment, we went inside, took a look and almost immediately ruled out Glaucoma, which was the fear of the NP at Henry Mayo. What he did diagnose me with is irisitis, which is, crazy enough, related to my ankylosing spondylitis in my back. Wow. Ok! Sent me on my way with a couple prescriptions for eye drops and a follow up within a week. I just got home and I'm happy to say that I'm healing nicely and looking MUCH better! Dr. Helm exceeds all criteria for what, in my discriminating mind, makes an exceptional surgeon. He performed cataract surgery on both my eyes with superb skill and I could not have anticipated a better outcome. I had zero complications, my eyes healed very quickly, and my vision was restored. I see young again. Dr. Helm graciously and patiently answered my incessant questions over several weeks, and helped me understand my lens options. I tried a particular lens in one eye that I thought I wanted but when I decided it did not meet my personal expectations, he expertly explanted it and replaced it with another option that was perfect for me. I had cataract surgery done here for my right eye - and still need to have my left eye done. Nothing but great things to say about the surgery and results so far. The nurses, anesthesiologist, doctor are extremely impressive. My complaints are about the office staff. They speak to you as if you are bothering them. They contradict each other on something as difficult as asking for a receipt for the rather expensive surgery. I was told I couldn't get a receipt because it hadn't posted yet but they would email it to me once it posted. I waited a week - no email. I called the office and a gal who was bothered that I called told me she could not email it but only print and mail. I asked her to mail it. Waited and nothing came in the mail. I called back and got someone who likes to speak over you. She told me the person who could print out the receipt was gone for the day and I would have to call back tomorrow. Really frustrated, I voiced my displeasure. I was then abruptly placed on hold for 3-4 minutes. Then I was told I could come down and pick up the receipt. I had to drive to their office where I was flatly handed the receipt by someone who was obviously annoyed. I felt like being Steve Martin and saying "Well excUUUUUUUSE ME!" When I am waiting in the waiting room or even in the patient room, the staff openly talk about where they are going for lunch and other banal conversations well within earshot. No one introduces themselves other than the doctors. No one says things like good morning, good afternoon, how are you? These are things that take no special training, education or special certification to do. They all just act annoyed they have to work there and annoyed that they have to deal with their customers. read more

My husband introduced me to Dr. Engh after my optometrist retired. My husband used him for cataract surgery when he was 30. Dr. Engh is a really great guy. He may not be really chatty or anything but he cares....I remember before he was with Helm in his own practice and I had some plugs in my eye and they were giving me a really bad reaction. I called on a weekend to leave his office a message and see if I could get in that next Monday. Dr. Engh called me right back on a Saturday and met me at the office to remove the plugs so I would feel better right away. I never forgot that and I will always go to him for care. read more

I've always liked Helm in the past, but they've really gone downhill. My friend recommended them because of their return policy on glasses that weren't quite right, but even that was a complete fail. After several years going there, I had to return a pair of glasses because they were cutting into my nose to the level of actually causing a cut with a scab. They replaced them, for a large fee (like more than a new pair of glasses, large fee), for a pair that was far less expensive, and didn't last 4 weeks before they broke. Note that they only allow one replacement no matter what the problem, even on a $1000+ pair of glasses. Although quite annoyed, I let it go. Today they called less than 3 hours before my appointment to reschedule for a month from now. I arranged my entire day around their schedule, and after 4 weeks of waiting to see them, and not being able to see AT ALL, I got the cancellation call 3 hours before my appointment. I honestly don't think these people are able to manage two offices. I told them the first time that I wasn't going to their new office, as the distance didn't work with the wait time I usually experience there (unusually long for any doctor), and I only had an hour during lunch, but apparently that just leads to a last minute cancellation, with a rude receptionist who doesn't give two shakes how many customers they lose. No problem. I'll just go see the doctor that my husband has been seeing near my home, for over a decade, and has never had an issue, and I'll take my kids there too. At least they still believe that customer service is a real thing. It's sad, because I make a real effort to support local businesses here, but I can't help if they really don't give a darn, and that's what I got from them both today and in my last interaction with Helm Vision. read more

Very negative experience today at Helm Vision Group. My son, 17 years, went in for contacts. paid for the exam, but he was having trouble putting them in. We returned 3 times and he still was not able. I doctor assistance. My son claimed it was the environment. In either case, I requested the written prescription so we could go somewhere else to purchase the contacts. Helm refused. They wanted us to purchase the contacts from them or no script. I recently came into Helm Vision Group looking for a place that offers both Optometrists and Ophthalmologists as a one stop place for eye care. On my first visit I met with one of the Ophthalmologists for a bump on my eyelid that was bugging me. I believe I met with Dr Gross and he was very polite and took his time to examine my eyes. He put me as ease and answered any questions I had while he effortlessly took care of my eye problem. I was so pleased with this experience, that I made my next prescription eye exam at Helm as well. This time I was seen by Dr Benosa. She was very kind and gentle with all the exams and explanations. I am so used to being rushed in and out of machines at other places. Not here Dr Benosa answered any and all my questions no matter how trivial they might have been. I just like to know things about my health and she was happy to answer. Again with this experience I felt relaxed and at ease with the atmosphere and attitude of the office staff. I was seen by these doctors but they weren't the only professionals here. The nurse who first gave me a evaluation was very nice and courteous, the front desk staff has always been friendly, and the glasses / contacts desk technician was very helpful too. She offered me all my contacts choices and told me which offered rebates and deals. The waiting rooms are nice and spacious with TVs and reading material. You don't have to sit in a hallway, like some other places nearby. Rates are on par with the others in town, with some fees here and there varying. Parking is a breeze with the huge lot our front. For the first time in over 20 years, I didn't need to reach for my glasses on my night stand when I opened my eyes in the morning!! Thursday afternoon I had LASIK surgery. My correction was around -5.00 diopters. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. I have likely been a candidate for many years but was terrified of the thought of my eyes getting lasered. As everyone had said, the anticipation was worse than the procedure. It took maybe 15 minutes total of being in the op room, all I felt was slight pressure. I could already see right after! I met Dr. Hailey Ho after being diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes. The whole staff was very pleasant, professional and explained each step of the tests in easy to understand language. All of the equipment was A++ in cleanliness. I told Dr. Ho that of all of the medical offices that I had been to, Dr. Ho's equipment was the most expensive that I have ever seen. Just before I left my office visit, I had a thought. I had a mole growing on my right eyelid. I had 3 separate Dermatologists look at the mole and they all declined to remove it due to the delicate location. I asked Dr. Ho to take a look at it. She immediately and confidently said that she could remove it for me. As you know, the skin of the eyelid is very thin. Dr. Ho took care of it quickly and without any pain. It has been four days since my surgery and everything is fine now. In closing, I would recommend Helm Vision Group and especially Dr. Ho to treat you and your family members with any problems that you may have. Their office building is nice with plenty of free parking. The office is approximately 1 mile from the Palmdale Hospital. I look forward to my next surgery with Dr. Ho. read more

The office as a whole is big, well-equipped, and the staff are very accommodating for my schedule the past three times I've come to visit. Frames selection could be a little bit better, but the optical staff is surprisingly down to work with my style preferences and dig around in some sort of online catalog for frames that they can order in. A particular highlight of the office in my experience is Dr. Lisa Guan. I've had other optometrists clearly trying to rush me through the ones and twos and brushoff clinical questions I have about eye complaints and stuff, but Dr. Guan doesn't do that. I had a question about eye pressures and received a concise and clear explanation of what she was seeing in my eyes. Same for procedures on any of the machines besides the basic one or two thing (which is a "phoropter, with a 'ph'" per Dr. Guan hahahah) Extra extra bonus love for Dr. Guan is that we booked my six year old for an eye exam. She needed the eye dilation drops and was freaked out from a past bad experience. Dr. Guan's calm, soothing bedside manner didn't stop my kid from squirming, but no tears either this time! The doctor was not the issue he was great. The lady at the front desk and the billing department is the issue. I have called 3 times to get it corrected. They keep sending a billing statement but will not bill my insurance and EVERYTHING IS COVERED all I should be paying is a $20.00 copay. Called again today and got the same rude person who just says they will look into it and get back to me. Well you should have done that the last 3 times. I checked with my insurance to see if the billing was sent to them and NO it has not as of today. This was from August of 2022. Get it together. read more

The only reason I went to Helm is that my Optometrist moved from his practice and joined Helm. He is still great, but is now involved with an Optometry practice that clearly doesn't care about their customers and only cares about money. The folks that handle ordering glasses don't explain the cost breakdown for the lenses and frames. They charge up front and after the insurance pays their part, Helm will end up sending you a bill for the remainder that the insurance didn't cover. Again, that is in addition to what you already paid for up front. When confronted the blame the customer for signing the purchase. Yet, again they don't go over all the costs especially the lenses and the stuff they sneak into the order. They are very arrogant, and rude. My family and I will never go back and I encourage any of Dr. Fitzgerald's patients to not go back, unless its to see Dr. Fitzgerald for an exam only. read more

I was excited to try this place since it was closer to home moving from Studio City, CA. My eye exam on 7/24/20 was pleasant, I was seen quickly, thoroughly and I trusted the pricing of their sunglasses. A few days later I saw the RayBan (RB2447) on reputable online stores (Nordstrom) for $169 and I was charged by Helm Vision $264 for the same pair! 8/26/20 my sunglasses aren't ready but my eyeglasses were today and working virtually I needed them. I am ok with the time frame of waiting because we are in a pandemic, etc. I asked about the price difference and they stated they have their own pricing and cannot do anything about it. Has this happened to anyone before? I get if it was hiked $20-40 but $100 over market value? This is upsetting and I hope Helm Vision can help me out. My husband started coming here a few years ago with a pterygium eye issue. I'm so glad I found this place. Dr. Helm himself did the procedure and he's absolutely the best. I mentioned my concern to him about this being the third time my husband would have this procedure done and on the same eye. Dr. Helm told me with such confidence and that this would be the LAST!
