Anchoring a shopping center on Highland Road, Hello Sushi is a nice spot to grab some quality sushi without the big production of some places. My friends and I went on a quiet night and were quickly seated. Our server was attentive and made sure each arrival was acknowledged. It looks like they have some fun cocktails playing on the sushi flare, but i stuck to wine, which was just meh. For apps, we tried the sushi egg roll which was okay (the accompanying sauce was delish!) and the fried mushrooms, more fried than veggie for that one. We each stuck to our own rolls rather than sharing, just to make it easier with different tastes. There were a lot to choose from. As required, they note the imported seafood (shrimp and crawfish) on the various rolls, so unfortunately, that eliminated about 1/2 the menu. I ordered the unagi and masago pieces. Both were good. The Aydin roll was just okay. The presentation of all the plates was very artistic - I loved the little "extra" they did! Flavor wise I expected more, and the spicey ponzu sauce was not the kick I was expecting. But the ingredients were fresh and not "fishy." I think next time, i will study the menu a little more. I really love this place. I never see anyone in here so service for us is pretty fast. I've done takeout with them too. We went there for my birthday yesterday and it was delicious. I got my favorite, the surf and turf roll (though the volcano is a close second). I love the way everything is presented -- there's always a pretty little flower on my plate. First time visitor at hello sushi! First, there is a cute outside seating area. It was cold and rainy so we sat inside at a booth. My coworker and I got the edamame, which was huge! We each got a clear soup and boyyyy those were very good. It didn't taste like dirty water, but like a soft ramen noodles. Super delicious! Lastly, we each got the crunchy roll. My coworker got the rice paper and I got the soy paper, both were so good! The crabmeat almost tasted fluffy, like very fresh crabmeat. The spicy mayo and eel sauce was decent too. I've been craving sushi for a while and decided to go to a place close to home. We've been here once before and I can't remember anything negative, so we decided to give it another try. I'm not sure if they're on "dad's thermostat" or their AC is broken but it was very HOT in the dining room. The dining room was empty since we came for an early dinner so service was pretty prompt. That's where the pleasantries of the service ended. The hostess and server were quite short with our family. It was very cold and rude feeling. The looks they would give our family was nothing short of a "bombastic side-eye". When we were done with plates, we would set them at the end of the table and as many times as they walked by to give us the side-eye, they didn't clear the plates so when the food came, the head server seemed really inconvenienced that she couldn't set them down, even though we offered to take them off her hands. The lady at the bar was very nice to all the bar patrons and the sushi chefs worked diligently. It was just the hostess and server who seemed to spoil the experience. The food. All the cooked food from the kitchen was fine. The sushi, I remember being fresh and great but a few of the pieces of sashimi had a questionable color and taste to them. The white fish and hamachi was a tinge of grey, but of course I ate them anyways. They tasted a bit off even though I used quite a bit of wasabi and soy sauce. Hopefully I don't regret it later. The ambience and atmosphere was pretty hip. Other than it being very hot in the dining room, the music was great and the large screen TVs provided entertainment.....but not enough to distract us from the seemingly judgmental server and hostess. When you don't trust the establishment and feel like there is an element of dishonesty it is difficult to give a lot of stars--and that's what happened on my visit. I paid with a credit card and was given paperwork to sign---the tax charged was over 10% and I don't believe the tax rate is over 10%---I asked for the manager for an explanation and she explained it as that's what they told us to do--or that's how we are supposed to do this---well, that explains nothing. Why is my tax over 10%? Is it the tax rate in this area? (I don't think so but is this Highland/Old Perkins area a special crime district where it's collecting a tax over and above what the rest of the Parish is? If so, that's not the explanation given. Is it a surcharge for using a credit card? Once again, if so, that's not the explanation given. I just felt scammed and hence the low rating because I left the establishment unhappy and not satisfied. And while I thought the sushi was above average , it was a meal for 1 that cost over $30 for 3 different sushi rolls---but that's the world in which we live. As stated, the rolls were good--above average in flavor and taste. My server was okay but she loses points because she did not know the reason for the greater than 10% tax charge which I thought was too defensive. Overall, above average sushi, expensive and since I do not know why the line for tax was in excess of 10%, I am unlikely to return for a few years and will continue my search for a decent sushi place east of Bluebonnet Blvd read more

Caliente roll was very good and healthy, on the light & fresh side without rice. Hello Sushi has been kinda hit or miss with me over the years... I must start by stating that I'm not really a sushi fan. I go because my daughter loves sushi, and my late mother did as well. I always get the Tempura, and the salad, the soup, vegetable rolls. This is how it goes. Sometimes it's terrific, and we love it. We have on a few occasions however, had to call right when we get home, which is about 2 miles away, to say that one of us, or a couple of us are sick. So that's no bueno. I'm not saying it is often, but it's happened on several occasions over a 5 year period and for me, that's too many times. I can't recommend it highly to anyone. I don't not recommend it either though because, the service is good, the atmosphere is nice, and the food always does taste good. You have to risk that on occasion it can happen that something can go wrong, for an unknown reason. They have always been apologetic and always offered a refund. No issue there. read more

Crispy and not oily. The flavors a disappointment. Lots of fish, but that was all we tasted. We were expecting a bit more flavor. The wasabi sauce served with it was good and did add some much need flavor. We ordered three sushi rolls to round out our meal: Ninja, Bon Temps and stop, drop and roll. The sushi arrived quickly and looked great. We were a bit surprised that each roll was only 5 pieces. The sushi was fresh and all the rolls tasted good. The rice to ingredients ratio was good. You could taste all the ingredients. I hate when rolls are 3/4 rice. My favorite was the Bon Temps roll. We enjoyed the sake and the sushi, but we were not wowed by the experience. The eggrolls were bland and the sushi a bit pricey for what we got. If we did not have the 225 deal, we would have felt we paid to much. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in BR. Definitely top five. My husband and I came here for their happy hour specials- half off select appetizers and $5 drink specials. We started with the Sushi Egg Rolls and Fried Mushrooms. Both dishes are deep fried and delicious. I particularly like the egg rolls, which are filled with a sushi krab mixture. We also ordered the Gogo Roll, Snow Crab Roll, and Yellowtail Roll. The latter two are standard among restaurants in the area but the Gogo is a mixture of salmon, tuna, and crab and a really great value. We also really like the Bomb Roll and Steak Teriyaki dish, which we've had in multiple occasions. The restaurant was pretty busy for a Thursday night so service was a bit slower than usual, which is the only reason I deducted a star. read more

Hello sushi is one of my favorite Sushi spots in Baton Rouge. The service is fast and friendly, ambiance is pleasant, and the sushi tastes delicious! I've been here several times and have ALWAYS ordered the Gogo roll, which is the best $8 roll you will ever eat. I've tried every other non-specialty roll... a few are good but most are just average in comparison, so stick with the Gogo! The specialty rolls are hit or miss (the bomb is my favorite)... I find more value in the non specialty rolls. I find the non-sushi entrees/appetizers to be really good here! We have ordered the fried dumplings and spicy seafood soup... dumplings were fried perfectly! The spicy seafood soup was SUPER spicy. My wife has an extremely high spice tolerance and even she had trouble eating more than a few spoonfuls. But for $6, it was a GREAT deal and extremely tasty! We took some home and will try to temper the spice a bit. Very few spots in Baton Rouge can compare to the overall experience you can get at Hello Sushi. read more

Hello Disappointment Two of us went here on a Groupon and ordered the spicy seafood soup, surf n turf roll, California roll, crunchy roll, and spicy tuna roll. After getting the soup, and tasting a strong fishy taste, I inquired from the waitress in earshot of the sushi making crew nearby, what's the fish in this soup? He replied: "white tuna" naming some other fish I was familiar with but not "white tuna." I need to interject here that I'm a longtime angler and outdoor sports-fishing writer, and am familiar with fish species. So I Googled "white tuna" and found out there's really no such fish but it is not unusual for these type places to serve a fish of that name. Here's the truth: "white tuna" is not albacore for if it was they would say so. It's really 'oilfish,' 'butterfish' or 'escolar'. These fish are known to cause people who eat it to have intestinal issues soon after consuming. Ask me how I know? The rest of the sushi was no better than that which is found on the cheap sushi buffets. Wait, it gets better: when I used the men's room I smelled a strong sewerage odor. Same odor I faintly smelled outside before entering the restaurant. In my experience, having smelled this issue before in another sushi restaurant, it was the sewerage backing up due to the dumping of grease down the sinks and not being deposed of properly in a holding tank. I brought all of this up to the manager just to let her know. I particularly told her not to use the term "white tuna" because that term really pertains to an inferior species of fish, easily Googled to found out. And also told her to visit the men's room and let me know if she could smell a foul odor. She said she did. I explained to her why and know she already knew why. read more

I had a good experience today, as this is the first time I've been back to Hello Sushi since when I used to come here as a student at LSU back in 2005. I refrained from getting the sushi pizza, which used to be my favorite item here, because it just is not at all a healthy menu item. Fried everything... The best part of my meal today was the fact that I was able to add fresh chopped jalapeno to my Philadelphia roll. Why the hell have I not thought of this before??? I LOVE it when I get a roll with fresh jalapeno, but have only seen rolls with them on menus a couple of times... I am always disappointed when I sift through the sushi menu and dont see one, and this is not just at Hello Sushi.... other sushi joints too. So today, I had the bright idea to just request it... what an idiot I am for waiting so long, because fresh (but seeded of course) jalapeno in a Philly roll, is A W E S O M E. The fresh spice of the jap subtled by the soft cream cheese perfectly compliments a good smoked salmon... anyway, I loved it. So I decided to try a new sushi spot and by the reviews it seemed like a good choice. I ordered the lunch sushi combo for $11 which comes with 3 regular sushi rolls. I chose shrimp tempura, crunchy and snow crab (2.5/5). It also comes with 4 pieces of tempura and they gave me an onion, sweet potato, broccoli and eggplant (2.5/5). I added the gogo roll for $8 (nicely presented) which has tuna, shrimp tempura and snow crab on the inside with wasabi toboiko ? (3/5), it was good. I also had the sushi egg rolls that I didn't really care for (2/5). If anyone knows me they know I do not care for imitation crab or here in Louisiana they tend to call it crab stick. I was a little disappointed at the quality as it was somewhat sloppy, maybe put together quickly. For the price I may not stop and place an order.
