The 2021 visit food was below average and service wasn't much to speak of. I live nearby and have been wanting to visit here and try the lunch buffet. I was not disappointed at all. I don't think I've eaten at a Chinese lunch buffet in the BR area that I really enjoyed. I brought my son and he is picky and he enjoyed just about everything he tried. We sampled a good variety. Side note: I've eaten at the other place at Sherwood & Coursey, just around the corner and my visit was once with no desire to return. Food: A really good variety to choose from. The variety they have is definitely quality over quantity. Very impressed with price of $12.99 and the quality of food. Egg roll was good, House Made Roll was excellent! The crab Rangoon was not lacking, it had ample amount of cream cheese, no skimping there. Honey Chicken was good, Sesame Chicken was excellent, had a little spice to the sweetness too. Hunan pork was excellent, beef and broccoli was the only item that was average to me. Sweet & sour chicken, friend rice, lo mein, was very good. No General Tso's or Mandarin Chicken on the buffet. Unsure if they take any requests for specific items to be placed on buffet. Service: I believe the owner was the one that greeted us and sat us at our table. Very nice, attentive, and had good small talk about FIFA World Cup. He immediately took our drink order and drinks were at our table before we returned. Ambiance: Place had a decemt ambiance to it. Very clean. I do remember the old Hunan's ambiance was cool because of the old celebrity photos on the wall that had a good amount of LSU stars. This definitely doesn't have that, but I wish it did resemble some of that, maybe one day it will. The important aspect is the great quality of the food, because I definitely wasn't there for the decor. To my surprise this place wasn't jam packed. I was nervous when I walked in because not many patrons inside, but when we left there was about 5 more tables filled. This place should be more packed. read more

My husband & I came in for a late lunch, around 3 or 4ish pm. We had been wanting to try a Chinese buffet and chose Hunan over their great health score and overall positive reviews. The inside was clean, spacious, and wasn't busy, which was nice bec we weren't fighting swarms of people like at a typical buffet. I tried a little sample of just about everything. I loved how the food was hot and I'd say the chicken dishes were my favorite. I was pleased with the price, it was a little over $30 for 2 adults, which I felt was good for an AYCE buffet on the weekend. ** UPDATE ** 3/13/26 Guess management read my prior review. Came again for lunch today and they had a young man making the sushi fresh. Although limited selection, 2 offered rolls incorporated tempura shrimp, and since I only eat cooked sushi - I was thrilled. Hunan still has great fried wonton, dumplings and the BEST spicy pork dish on any buffet in town. Today I also tried their steam fish entree which was offered in a very light (soy/mirrin?) sauce - sooo tasty, and I don't even like fish much but keep trying to incorporate into my meals for light protein. When I asked the workers there what type of fish it was because it did not taste fishy at all, he said catfish which I was frankly shocked. I usually don't like fish because it's so FISHY tasting, but the way that they steamed it in there light Asian sauce really made it flaky and delicious without a strong fishy taste. Although this buffet is by far one of the smallest in the Sherwood / Broadmoor areas, if you haven't tried it yet I definitely recommend you do so. So this Review is in part for the Too Good to Go process and my order I received from Hunan. When I arrived I noticed the buffet was pretty small, which I actually don't mind. I think it makes the quality better. It smelled really good in there and clean. The guy who I checked in with was kind and straight to the point. When I received my food I was excited to see I had a good variety of items for a very low price. On the app, my order was 6.99 and it included two plates of items selected by the Hunan staff. . I received the following: Box 1: crab Rangoon, a piece of fish, a spring roll, 2 fried Donuts, 3 plantains, and a piece of chocolate cake. Box 2: A house special lo mein or some sort of stir fry with noodles that had chicken, beef, and, broccoli, as well as shrimp etoufee. I was hesitant at first bc I don't typically eat any of those things except spring rolls and crab Rangoon but it smelled so good that I tasted everything! I enjoyed it all except the fish bc I don't like Swai/Basa, the plantains bc they were a little too hard, and the chocolate cake bc I don't care for pudding type icing. Everything else was really tasty!!! My son ate it all for the most part and he's pretty picky. He said the etoufee tasted like Louisiana etoufee, so I think that's a good thing! This is not the Hunans of old. The first sign was the Halloween inflatable out front, on December 13th. Walking in, there is now a sign of an "all day buffet," which was the second sign. There are TVs with the menu at the checkout counter, third sign. The buffet was good. It was standard fare Chinese food and if you like that, you won't be disappointed. Just as good as the next Chinese buffet. Nothing bad but nothing memorable. The price for the buffet was a good value. There were good options to choose from. The interior also lost the character of the "old" Hunan. The service was fine--not bad and not overly friendly. Unfortunately, knowing what Hunan used to be, I doubt we return for just an average buffet. read more

The first time I ate here was about 4 years ago. Still very much during peak COVID, so my standards were already lower. My boyfriend and I decided to do the buffet, and by the time we got food on our plates it was too late to back out. It was all inedible. The interior was pretty dingy too, but I never judge a restaurant based only on that-if the place is old, that may mean the food stood the test of time (Looking at you Pinetta's, RIP). But that was not the case here. We asked for the check after barely eating and the waitress looked so sad. We tipped well and went to the car. Before we could pull out, an older man ran to our window and begged us to let him cook something fresh for us free of charge. I felt so bad, but being put on the spot we politely declined, even though he kept insisting. I feel so guilty about that now that I've read other reviews and learned that was the owner, Mr. Cheng. Apparently he was aging and in bad health, and I can understand why that may have affected the quality/freshness. There definitely wasn't a lot of in-person diners given that we all were trying to stay in quarantine, so I presume the buffet was just being neglected. BUT, I was looking to order delivery the other day, and I happened to see some very encouraging new reviews. Mr. Cheng sadly passed away, and everyone was raving about the changes the new owner made. Both with the food and the interior of the restaurant itself. So I decided to try again...and I'm happy to say that it was fantastic! I live about 15-20 min from the restaurant and everything was still piping hot when I got it. The flavor of their fried rice was incredible, not exaggerating when I say it's some of the best I've ever had. Their eggroll was literally the width of my palm (I'm 5'8", my hands aren't super tiny) and the filling was perfection. No weird gray meat like you may see with other eggrolls. Not saying that always indicates a bad flavor, but this was just nicer to look at lol. Egg drop soup was great. My ONLY complaint, which isn't a huge one, is that the general tso's chicken had much more breading than meat and had no spice to it, just very sweet. So that could have been better. But I also know that's the standard for american-chinese cuisine and most people probably prefer it that way. Overall it just really warms my heart to see an older business have new life breathed into it. Especially here in BR where most restaurants hardly last over a few years. If you haven't been to Hunan in a while, I encourage you to go give it another try! read more

I had written Hunan's off after our beloved Mr. Cheng passed away in 2020. It was my understanding that the establishment continued to decline in terms of food quality and management. The reviews on Yelp were terrible, and the restaurant even closed down for about a year. Last night I was scrolling through Yelp to help me pick a date night spot for my husband, and l. I was surprised when I came across Hunan's. I noticed the buffet area had been completely remodeled-no more wrestling the stairwell to get to access part of the buffet. It looked very nice. I called to get more information, and the new owner answered. He was polite and happy to answer my questions, expressing his eagerness for our visit. So, after Church, we decided to give them another try, and we are so glad we did! The beautiful ornate wood carvings and exquisite etched glass divider are still there. They have removed all the framed photos, brightened the place up with a fresh coat of paint, and completely remodeled the buffet area, making it so much easier to navigate and providing more dishes to choose from. The food was fresh and delicious. We will definitely become regulars. I met the owner today and he appears to be a hard-working young man who clearly takes pride in his restaurant, cares about his customers, has a welcoming staff, and consistently wears a smile. He is no relation to Mr. Cheng but I believe he would be very proud of how his legacy is being preserved. They reopened on January 1st so many don't know that Hunan's is back better than ever. We always get the buffet. Food is very delicious but cools off quickly on your plate. We have noticed this for a while but they don't seem to address this issue. Service is very attentive with removing empty dishes from your table. We love Hunans! read more

Awful. Aside from the food being remarkably average this visit, the staff was letting a little girl touch the food on the buffet the whole time. The little girl stuck her hands in the desserts and the soup noodles. She even put the container of soup toppings and the serving spoon on the ground and the staff just picked it up and put it back on the counter. I got an order from Too Good to Go and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I have a favorite Chinese buffet back home and I rarely find any food that rivals it but Hunan may be that place. The process to pick up with the staff was easy and the place was clean. My fiancé enjoyed the food as well. We had fried rice, sesame chicken, spring roll, crab Rangoon, fish, and more. Knowing the food was that good as "leftovers" has me eager to return. I plan to go eat in tomorrow! read more

Think the place went down a bit after grandfather passed. Decided to try again and ordered takeout. Chicken with cashews was astoundingly delicious!
